In 1978 I was the stage roadie for a Toronto based band called ZON (3 albums) and we had the opportunity to open their Toronto show at the annual Canadian National Exhibition (think of it as an annual county fair; on steroids). As we waited to get our stuff on stage, we got to hear their incredible soundcheck. Hearing them checking their vocal mics by singing a capella was like a dream. Then after our set (well received), I was backstage packing up our gear. My head was inside a road case and as I came up from that case, I made a quick u-turn to grab more cables and ran right into Tommy Shaw! AND he had his guitar with him! I nearly died on the spot, both by being so close to a guitar hero and nearly laying him flat out. Thankfully he was very gracious about it as I melted into a grovelling pile of apologies. Ahh, my brush with greatness.
Man, I never thought I would see Zon mentioned in a comment. One of my favourite bands back in the day. Saw them at the Oakville Centre and they were amazing!
Tommy Shaw said the song just kind of wrote itself. He was just singing anything that came to his mind and that’s what came from it. He said he’s never been in trouble with the law ever. Yes that sound you liked was a synth. Check out Mr Roboto, Too Much Time on my Hands, The Best of Times, Lady, Babe. Oh and Blue Collar Man. I see it as a tribute to the working man or woman. Not 9 to 5 at a desk job but doing all the physically challenging work. “Long nights, impossible odds…..” and so it goes. But that also goes for bands, first responders, etc.
I saw Styx a looong time ago! At the end of the show all the band members gave me guitar picks and Tommy Shaw gave me a monogrammed STYX towel. Have it framed and hanging on the wall!
My first car, a shi* brown Chevy Comet, 15 years old, and, literally, wore this tape out! It was a sad day. The Best of Times, Snowblind, Fooling Yourself, and Grand Illusion are some of my favorites.
You will hear this in a lot of 60's , 70's bands their songs will be very diverse.Thats what made the music so great then.Nothing sounded the same.So much originality.
I don’t know why but this is the Pittsburgh Steelers theme song-3rd or 4th quarter-the big screens go black and every player&fan (plus every team that comes into our stadium) knows what’s coming. Everyone stands. The game stops. Players are looking at the screens. All you can see is gold “Terrible Towels” waving and on the screens the defense making amazing plays. It’s the coolest experience in the stands!!! No lie, I have seen the Steelers come back from being down and win the game after Renegade. It’s electric!!! Thanks so much for doing this💛🏈 Another one of their great ones-a ballad-The Best of Times
I love this reaction. Styx was and is one of my all time favorites. If you want to check out something extra special, in 2006 while on tour Styx did a special performance with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra from Cleveland, OH. The show called One with Everything was so amazing seeing these high school age musicians playing with these legends of rock. I wonder how many still remember with awe 17 years later sharing the stage with such an iconic band.
I just noticed the song added that "gospel choir" style element. That always adds a really cool subset or something like that to a song. Two other songs I can think of off the top of my head are Foreigner "I want to Know what Love Is" and "Spirit in the Sky." So many great reviews of songs that are part of my life that I haven't heard forever. Thanks, BP.

Your diversity had me sharing you daily, no lie!❤
Styx was my first concert in 1981. To this day it is still a top 3 concert of mine. This song is an example on some members of the band wanting to play straight ahead Rock n roll, others wanted to make theatrical themed albums. Thus the beginning of the end of this line up. They later continued without one certain member and are still touring today.
Still blows this song away in concert. As a man of faith I think you would be moved by Show Me The Way. Makes me tear up . . . When my husband was deployed and I couldn’t watch the news I heard the song on a classic rock station and it brought me some peace.

I've watched a number of your reactions now. All of these songs are from my childhood. I'm starting to realize just how unique my experiences with music were. The late 60's through the 70's were weekly new bangers on the radio. It was a never ending stream of unbelievable talent... BEFORE digital production. You've only scratched the surface. Keep it going dude. It doesn't end.
I loved Mr Roboto growing up in the 80's but this is the Styx I was introduced to and blew me away in the 70's! Born in 71... best childhood for music ever!
Tommy Shaw’s diversity is astounding. He also has quite a solo career as well as being with Damn Yankees. Check out Crystal Ball or Boat on the River to see something completely different from Renegade.
Styx is in my Top 5 Concert Bands of all time. I've been listening to them since the mid '70's. When Renegade hit the airwaves back in '78, it was instant Banger. Still is today. The Come Sail album is a Triple Platinum Banger from start to finish. At their concerts, (I've been to 10 of them going back decades), this song is a fan fave and gets Rocked hard. Listen to the lyrics, learn them then, crank it up to 11. The song tells a story - He's telling his mom what's up and it's real damn bad! Oh momma, I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law... lawman has put an end to my running and I'm so far from my home..... hangman is coming down from the gallows and I don't have very long.....

From what I've seen and heard from different rock bands in interviews, especially Journey, the singer, guitarist and keyboardist usually worked together to get the sound and verses based on each of their specific talents and most of them could play several instruments so that all contributed.

The subliminal elements... the drums pounding like the heartbeat of someone on the run. After the guitar solo, the synth rings out like a police siren, or a prison break siren..
You need to see them performing the song! They are (back live,) tantamount to a full musical production with their placement, timing, theatrics. BUT I also recall hearing - kinda amusing and cool -that there was a subtle agreement that they would let James Young ( usually lead guitar,) have his way and cut loose for parts of most songs... if he kept himself reigned in the rest of the time. lmao. He's BOMB! As are every one of them! Harmonies.. egads.

From the days of the "Head Bangers". My high school days.
Saw Styx for the 2nd time last weekend!! It’s amazing to see artists still rocking over 50 years later. And the entire crowd singing along…. What a great band!
