Mine is a McCormick Deering international harvester model 10-20 probably from the late 1920's maybe 1930's. I just completed my first test drive tonight and am happy with the results. I used a Briggs and Stratton 8hp from the 1980's. The engine needs a rebuild, so will be disassembling and doing that work soon.

At a tractor show I saw an Avery with 6 5 horse Briggs all belted to a common shaft in front of the original clutch and flywheel. It sounded great and pulled the sled very well in it's weight class. 6 x 212 would be 1272 ccs. No balancing, no timing needed. He put 3 engines on one side and 3 on the other. It was very cool. An Avery is about the size of a farmall C.
I am using a Predator 212 to power my full scale WWI tank. It only needs a little bit over idle to move it. The tracks freewheel over bogies with a hidden tire underneath providing the push. I will be doing a video on the whole build as soon as it is 100% complete.
Nicely done and nicely shown. I have a 1936 Farmall F-12 that has a Model A Ford engine in it. It has the original tractor transmission plus the Ford transmission in it so it has a lot of gears! I'm going to see if I can get the Ford engine to run again (it crapped out on me and few years ago) and if I can't get it to run I may give this a try. I've been wondering how to do it and this did a good job of showing how.
We always welded up a cracked block. Most of our tractors were old and a few of them had froze and had busted blocks some time in the past. But the predator motor is a good option. I like it 👍 we had several of those Farmall H's.
I bought our torque converter for our go kart about 2 years ago off of Ebay for I think around $80.00. The chinese torque converters were very reasonable compared to the bigger names, at least a couple years ago, not sure what they're going for now. I would like to see what the performance difference is between the clutch and converter. I'm betting that you would like the converter more because they make up for some difference in the gearing ratio, better low end torque when it needs it as in pulling and higher speed if your just tooling along...
I bought a cheap eBay converter a year ago for the golf cart project, it's been great, a year later it has the original belt still, but since the pandemic they have increased dramatically if you can even order one.

I was recently given a '97 Wheel Horse 520h with an Onan 20hp engine. I wonder how a Wheel Horse horizontal shaft engine with its PTO would do in a build like this? Like the PTO could be setup to work with a foot pedal to control the tranny? Might be interesting.
@@ChrisfromKeyfarm If you're not familiar with the old style Wheel Horses with their horizontal shaft engines and PTO's, the PTO design is similar to what is used between the transmission and engine on old farm tractors and manual transmission cars and trucks but it is set up slightly different. On manual transmission tractors, cars and trucks, the engines flywheel is a steel disc and the transmission has a clutch plate mounted to it controlled by a clutch slave cylinder to push the clutch disc against the engines flywheel to transfer power between the two. On the Wheel Horse machines, there is a steel pulley that has a smooth inside face that does the same thing the engine flywheel does. Then there is a clutch disc with a fiber facing on the engine drive shaft. This clutch disc is a pulley also and turns continuously while the engine is running turning a belt that goes back to the transmission, which is controlled via either gears or a hydro unit to move the machine forward or backward. When the clutch lever is engaged it presses the outer steel pulley against the clutch fiber disc on the engine and that provides power to the belt that runs the mower deck, snowblower unit etc.
Does the PTO work? Isn't that little centrifugal clutch going to burn out? Hard to imagine it could hold up when these tractors came with 11 inch clutch discs

The older farmall engines are beastly. if you can get them. i got a farmall 450 the block and head are immaculate, no cracks or repair welds. it has the big back c281 engine in it and could pull a 4 bottom plow if i had on in the toughest of grounds.
I want to do something like this, but with a v twin predator. Problem is I can't find a centrifugal clutch rated for that big of an engine. Also with this set up you probably need to start it in gear, right? I'd think the input shaft would spin quite a bit even with the centrifugal clutch?
The centrifugal clutch free Wheels the input shaft doesn't spin at all until you rev up the engine as far as a clutch rated for that high they do exist and they start at about $265
Eventually this tractor may have that 22 horsepower predator but that's about an $1,100 project between the motor cost the warranty on the motor and a real high-dollar clutch
Love the videos! I want to do this to a 1979 datsun b210. One question- why not connect the motor shaft directly to the transmission shaft via the couplers? Do the gear teeth/size ratios have affect speed/and/or torque? Just really curious to kn ow before ordering parts
First and most importantly you need a way to clutch it The original motor the clutch is attached to the flywheel and of course that is gone second reason with these low power engines you need to multiply torque to get them to do what they need to do. Love it! It's great to see other "old stuff" guys and UA-cam creators from Alabama! This state is a great place to live and make wonderful projects. That Predator engine looks similar to an old-style 5 HP Briggs engine. I had a go cart with a 5 HP Briggs when I was a kid. Ran that all over the countryside and had a whole lot of adventures in it. I'm going to look through your videos and see if you did one about the failure analysis on the original engine, as I am an engine guy and would find that interesting. I used to work for AgChem Co. and work on TerraGator and RoGator machines all over Alabama, so probably have been in your area before!

It still wouldn't be very comparable due to the different torque curves. For PTO or starting a plow from stopped you want to be able to let the clutch out without motor at a near idle, where as the Kohler would need to be revved out to keep from stalling.
The industrial 5.9 cummins in the Timberjack skidders I used to run put out almost 50,000 lbs of torque at the end of a 6' tall tire, in first gear! Gearing.....
Great video. I put a predator 212 on a Husky rear tine tiller I had constant issues with for 15 yrs. Bolted right up, starts up on second pull. That predator engine is like find'n money. Again, great video.
Very cool thats a great application for it. with that gear ratio you are making as much or more power than the original engine and nice job with the installation. Like your golf cart a lovejoy coupling makes it a whole lot easier to mate shafts together without lathe work I just had to do that on a project i couldnt get the wobble out
That would be a tremendous amount of fabrication and I no longer have the flywheel, or clutch. I don't think that little crankshaft would like a Farmall H flywheel hanging off it.haha

Awesome it moves! Suggest going to a 70 tooth sprocket should help with the revs on the motor. Right now you probably hard on the governor just by listening to it when you said you had it in 4th gear. You have inspired me since I need a tractor for our property, my little John Deere 12hp RX 63 doesn't cut it.
I think we are similar in age. My skills are in coding and electronics (working on microcontroller code this evening) and I have so little knowledge in engines and the mechanics that accompany them but I really enjoyed this video and have subsequently subscribed to hopefully learn. I love that however the torque converter would still be good because if you have a heavy load on the back of the tractor that little centrifugal clutch might get smoked the Torque converter will start off on a lower gear and then it will automatically shift up, much more low-end torque to takeoff, May even let you decrease the diameter of that sprocket connected to the tractors transmission.
That is a good point, but they are still sold out all over, I even found what appeared to be a good link, but once I clicked buy, it said unavailable. I put a cheap one on the golf cart I converted, it has worked great, just can't find at this e.
How about a Wisconsin VF4 or a VE 4 Wisconsin they are both air cooled , you can find them about anywhere. Look I up used Wisconsin stationary engines sometimes you can find them with the reverse gear already in place.. Just food for thought. Fred Durbin

I don't hate what your doing. Im not exactly in love with the clutch set up , there is a newer juggernaut clutch from go power sports that you may feel is more appropriate for your use . Ive got an older diesel tractor that has ovaled cylinders. Im interested in doing a similar project but im going to need to use the factory clutch because I need the pto to work. I will have to make a gear box and reduction on a 670 to make it worth having though
does your tractor have a two-step clutch one that stops the forward motion and one that stops the PTO ,because as far as running the PTO ,it runs off the gearbox in the transmission on my tractor all my PTO is work. when I put a 670 in this the first time it won't have a centrifical clutch it'll have a depressed tensioner that works off of the clutch pedal if that helps you any. They make really heavy duty double v belt centrifugal clutches but they're real expensive like $260. and above. As far as gopowersports I'm not really a fan of their inflated prices. This is NOT a criticism, just an engineering observation. The mounting holes for the bearing / driven sprocket carriers would have been far better to have been located on the top of the frame rails. Here is why... as the holes exist now (on the bottom of the frame rails) they are piercing the "tension" side of the member. This makes them far more susceptible to fatigue cracking. IF (that is a huge IF) one were to later decide to restore this 'old iron' to the original type of engine (or something even larger) these holes could become a liability for strength. Holes on the top side of the frame (while still weakening the frame some) would remain in compression and be far less likely to crack due to fatigue. Probably the optimum construction would have been to not drill ANY new holes and instead constructed the brackets to bolt on to the outer sides of the frames with holes and slots already provided. As I said in the beginning, this is NOT a criticism, just observation and hopefully a small learning point for any young budding engineering students of SOHK (School Of Hard Knocks)! Good video! Well, I made a video of it pulling a stump and that was pretty cool, but something here recently , with my farmall C I pulled my 16 ft hay trailer to the barn with 2 rolls on it. When I hooked the Predator 212 farmall H to the hay to pull it off the trailer, it pulled trailer, hay, other tractor and all, till the mud piled up in front of the other tractor tires and the hay began to move. This thing is slow but strong.
This one will, we are going to do it one day when my buddies truck is loaded and at home, here lately when it's home, it's empty. I would like to pull it down the driveway with a 50,000 pound coil on the flatbed.
Since I have owed a number of Farmall Hs over the years a 212 is not that far off from the original HP, Which if I recall was only about 26HP... The only thing I would have done is installed a clutch so that it worked the same way. The upgrade to a 670 would be just about the same HP rating as original. More than likely would have better power than the old unit anyways. Might even be more fuel savings over time. Repower is the way to go with a lot of older units. Nice work anyways!
Vanguard engines are good engines. Replaced one in my John Deere lawn tractor. Only tick about the engine when pulling under strain and the governor and then relieve that strain. The governor will kick back and the engine can backfire. Yes this was at Full Throttle. And with the dollars blade I had to re sharpen. Looks like I forgot they needed it when I put it away this winter. The vanguards got replaced by a newer model. But they have injured with no major silly mistakes of manufacturing like plastic gears.
@@chrisfrost9176 I've had them make a crank end that went on my engine, then I bolt the flywheel on my engine. That way, use my clutch, flywheel, starter, pressure plate. Or, weld the crack up on original engine and have plenty of power.
Forget bigger motors, build the heck out of that 212 and grab an electric start/stop kit to run up top and that thing will be doing burnouts! Cool idea, can’t believe it. I’ve seen it done in a truck, the magic is in that trans.
It has plenty of low end for sure, that's what I was going for, 5 the gear, ( not seen in the video is a much taller gear, just guessing around 7 mph. The good thing about this setup is I can change the main sprocket and chain and experiment with different things.
@@ChrisfromKeyfarm could potentially mount 3 sets and just move chain between them with a idler gear tht would take slack out also eliminating need to adjust chain by the motor have a low gear when needed and a cruising gear when needed
Ok,ok,ok let me explain, I knew this comment was coming. I was attempting to to do 4 small tacks, since this sprocket is 13.5 inches across I was worried it would warp( it still did a little ) I didn't want to get it very hot and it turned out very ugly and I haven't ground on it yet, so in conclusion , it was me.
Seems cool. Just need to make sure you plan a few days in advance when you want to use it and make sure you can rotate out drivers every 12hours or so on the way to the other side of the farm.

I have 4 of these engines. Generator is awesome, had it a little over a year. Water pump had it a year, put a 212 in an electric golf cart had it a year,and this one a couple months, it was on my tiller first, my harbor freight doesn't have any. Thanks brother.
Love these old Farmalls. I have unstuck 2 engines. One was a H and the other a M. They were both my grandads and I wished to God I would have kept atleast one of them.
Very nice man. It's awesome. You should try a belt drive system instead . It's all there at tractor supply. You just need a large 14in pulley or so. A small 2in x 5/8 . all half inch ,and a idler. N youd be way way happier with it. You'll have way more control, With a actual clutch. And no over heating n those clutching belts last for ever. But make sure it's a clutching belts. There only like 30 bucks but they really last forever n take a beating . No lie.

The block was cracked at the back where it holds the camshaft.

It stays locked up most of the time, doesn't build much heat. Yes the PTO works

I got a ? On the 212 swap for a tfuck would it be better to use a diesel trans because of the lower rpm range?
That seems like more trouble, just go with a bigger sprocket on the input shaft.

Depends a lot on the gearing on that particular lawn tractor, if it's geared low enough you could run it with a weed wacker engine...Lol
The H Farmall was rated 26 horse power. A 20 hp Kohler engine would do the job.
People dont understand gearing and leverage..one cld move the earth by hand if geared properly.
@soupertrooper that sounds like a lot of work. But go for it. Cast another engine.
It still wouldn't be very comparable due to the different torque curves. For PTO or starting a plow from stopped you want to be able to let the clutch out without motor at a near idle, where as the Kohler would need to be revved out to keep from stalling.
670 predator
The industrial 5.9 cummins in the Timberjack skidders I used to run put out almost 50,000 lbs of torque at the end of a 6' tall tire, in first gear! Gearing.....
Great video. I put a predator 212 on a Husky rear tine tiller I had constant issues with for 15 yrs. Bolted right up, starts up on second pull. That predator engine is like find'n money. Again, great video.

Very cool thats a great application for it. with that gear ratio you are making as much or more power than the original engine and nice job with the installation. Like your golf cart a lovejoy coupling makes it a whole lot easier to mate shafts together without lathe work I just had to do that on a project i couldnt get the wobble out

Why did you use a centrifugal clutch instead of going direct and using the stock clutch??
That would be a tremendous amount of fabrication and I no longer have the flywheel, or clutch. I don't think that little crankshaft would like a Farmall H flywheel hanging off it.haha

Awesome it moves! Suggest going to a 70 tooth sprocket should help with the revs on the motor. Right now you probably hard on the governor just by listening to it when you said you had it in 4th gear. You have inspired me since I need a tractor for our property, my little John Deere 12hp RX 63 doesn't cut it.

I love that however the torque converter would still be good because if you have a heavy load on the back of the tractor that little centrifugal clutch might get smoked the Torque converter will start off on a lower gear and then it will automatically shift up, much more low-end torque to takeoff, May even let you decrease the diameter of that sprocket connected to the tractors transmission.
That is a good point, but they are still sold out all over, I even found what appeared to be a good link, but once I clicked buy, it said unavailable. I put a cheap one on the golf cart I converted, it has worked great, just can't find at this e.
Keyfarm could probably try “go power sports” for torque converters, I bet that thing will be a useful workhorse once it is perfected👍

How about a Wisconsin VF4 or a VE 4 Wisconsin they are both air cooled , you can find them about anywhere. Look I up used Wisconsin stationary engines sometimes you can find them with the reverse gear already in place.. Just food for thought.

I don't hate what your doing. Im not exactly in love with the clutch set up , there is a newer juggernaut clutch from go power sports that you may feel is more appropriate for your use . Ive got an older diesel tractor that has ovaled cylinders. Im interested in doing a similar project but im going to need to use the factory clutch because I need the pto to work. I will have to make a gear box and reduction on a 670 to make it worth having though
does your tractor have a two-step clutch one that stops the forward motion and one that stops the PTO ,because as far as running the PTO ,it runs off the gearbox in the transmission on my tractor all my PTO is work. when I put a 670 in this the first time it won't have a centrifical clutch it'll have a depressed tensioner that works off of the clutch pedal if that helps you any. They make really heavy duty double v belt centrifugal clutches but they're real expensive like $260. and above. As far as gopowersports I'm not really a fan of their inflated prices. It was an 84 tooth sprocket, and yes at that gear ratio it'll pull anything or spin the tires( watch the stump pull video) it is just slow
This is NOT a criticism, just an engineering observation. The mounting holes for the bearing / driven sprocket carriers would have been far better to have been located on the top of the frame rails. Here is why... as the holes exist now (on the bottom of the frame rails) they are piercing the "tension" side of the member. This makes them far more susceptible to fatigue cracking. IF (that is a huge IF) one were to later decide to restore this 'old iron' to the original type of engine (or something even larger) these holes could become a liability for strength. Holes on the top side of the frame (while still weakening the frame some) would remain in compression and be far less likely to crack due to fatigue.
Probably the optimum construction would have been to not drill ANY new holes and instead constructed the brackets to bolt on to the outer sides of the frames with holes and slots already provided.
As I said in the beginning, this is NOT a criticism, just observation and hopefully a small learning point for any young budding engineering students of SOHK (School Of Hard Knocks)!

What's the biggest load you've pulled
Well, I made a video of it pulling a stump and that was pretty cool, but something here recently , with my farmall C I pulled my 16 ft hay trailer to the barn with 2 rolls on it. When I hooked the Predator 212 farmall H to the hay to pull it off the trailer, it pulled trailer, hay, other tractor and all, till the mud piled up in front of the other tractor tires and the hay began to move. This thing is slow but strong.
There is also a video of it pulling my 16 ft. With 3 rolls on it.
My grandpappy always said you can move a fully loaded semi with a 5 hp engine if your geared properly ! 👍
This one will, we are going to do it one day when my buddies truck is loaded and at home, here lately when it's home, it's empty. I would like to pull it down the driveway with a 50,000 pound coil on the flatbed.
Now john deere can't claim to have the least cylinders.
The two cylinder engines are from many decades ago.

there were tractors with less cylinders than a John deere.
Side PTOs were usually used for pulley wheels for belt-driven saw mill, conveyor elevator for bales, ensilage blower into silos, etc.

Since I have owed a number of Farmall Hs over the years a 212 is not that far off from the original HP, Which if I recall was only about 26HP... The only thing I would have done is installed a clutch so that it worked the same way. The upgrade to a 670 would be just about the same HP rating as original. More than likely would have better power than the old unit anyways. Might even be more fuel savings over time. Repower is the way to go with a lot of older units. Nice work anyways!

Vanguard engines are good engines. Replaced one in my John Deere lawn tractor. Only tick about the engine when pulling under strain and the governor and then relieve that strain. The governor will kick back and the engine can backfire. Yes this was at Full Throttle. And with the dollars blade I had to re sharpen. Looks like I forgot they needed it when I put it away this winter. The vanguards got replaced by a newer model. But they have injured with no major silly mistakes of manufacturing like plastic gears.
Why wouldn't you run it gear to gear and use the clutch on the tractor
I'm not sure what you mean by gear to hear, but the clutch on the tractor doesn't work without the flywheel on the original engine.

@@chrisfrost9176 I've had them make a crank end that went on my engine, then I bolt the flywheel on my engine. That way, use my clutch, flywheel, starter, pressure plate. Or, weld the crack up on original engine and have plenty of power.
Forget bigger motors, build the heck out of that 212 and grab an electric start/stop kit to run up top and that thing will be doing burnouts! Cool idea, can’t believe it. I’ve seen it done in a truck, the magic is in that trans.

Looks like you could have cut that gearing ratio in half and still had plenty of umph.
It has plenty of low end for sure, that's what I was going for, 5 the gear, ( not seen in the video is a much taller gear, just guessing around 7 mph. The good thing about this setup is I can change the main sprocket and chain and experiment with different things.
@@ChrisfromKeyfarm could potentially mount 3 sets and just move chain between them with a idler gear tht would take slack out also eliminating need to adjust chain by the motor have a low gear when needed and a cruising gear when needed
Engine mods like done on champ karts can get the 212 well over 12hp
Before I mod it, I'll go with a larger engine. In my experience, modded engines are less reliable and have a much shorter life.

Ok,ok,ok let me explain, I knew this comment was coming. I was attempting to to do 4 small tacks, since this sprocket is 13.5 inches across I was worried it would warp( it still did a little ) I didn't want to get it very hot and it turned out very ugly and I haven't ground on it yet, so in conclusion , it was me.
I saw that done about 10 years ago, at the Early American Steam Engine Show, in Windsor, Pa. The same guy had one with 6 B&S 5hp motors.

This is pretty sweet. But man that large sprocket looks a little wobbly.
It warped a little when I welded it, even trying not to get it very hot it still did. Just a side effect of plate steel
Seems cool. Just need to make sure you plan a few days in advance when you want to use it and make sure you can rotate out drivers every 12hours or so on the way to the other side of the farm.

I have not tried it, but I'll say no way , a bush hog is a load for even big tractors.

I have 4 of these engines. Generator is awesome, had it a little over a year. Water pump had it a year, put a 212 in an electric golf cart had it a year,and this one a couple months, it was on my tiller first, my harbor freight doesn't have any. Thanks brother.

Very nice man. It's awesome. You should try a belt drive system instead . It's all there at tractor supply. You just need a large 14in pulley or so. A small 2in x 5/8 . all half inch ,and a idler. N youd be way way happier with it. You'll have way more control, With a actual clutch. And no over heating n those clutching belts last for ever. But make sure it's a clutching belts. There only like 30 bucks but they really last forever n take a beating . No lie.

Yes sir, more to come of this tractor, eventually the sheet metal will be back on, but some real interesting stuff between now and then.
And electric start 420cc with a slightly smaller (72 tooth) driven gear may be perfect! And you'll have a charging system for lights, too.

It does, probably going to end up turning a bradey PTO winch with it, also has a second PTO on the side. Both work independently.
