Today we take a look at a Seiko SKX779, the ORIGINAL first generation Seiko Black Monster, a true legend among watch people and stil the KING OF LUME, that set a benchmark for all watches used even today.
I owned the original Orange Monster SKX781 for years and it was my second mechanical watch I ever got. I wore it and enjoyed it and still regret selling it to this day. Seiko updated these with newer generations and although the new ones use improved movements that have both hacking and hand winding, this basic 7S26 powered version is the most sought after. There is something about the markers and the simplicity that make it special and in my opinion better than the new versions.
Enjoy!!

I have 1,2,3 &4.. Gen1 Orange, Gen2 Halloween, Gen3 Jade and Gen 4 Padi. Love them all equally.
Love my first generation Black Monster. Still my go to adventure watch.
1st gen is the way to go for sure. Especially for any seiko watch I think.
I have flipped this watch so many times since 2008, but today, feeling nostalgic, I purchased one on ebay, and I think it found its final resting place.
The first gen monster is such a cool and unique watch, one of the few watches I feel looks good with wear and tear and probably the only one I wouldn't mind using like a tool watch.
Have the 1st generation orange monster. Almost 10 years old and still love it. I could swear Tudor Pelagos took some designs cues from the indices and hour markers of the monster.
I'll never understand people who find this beauty ugly.
It was the first watch that started it all for me personally, a gateway watch if you will :)
Its staying in my collection no matter what ;)
It wasn't my first seiko, I inherited some from my dad, Swiss quality without the over inflated price tag. Plus its ISO certified.
Love my SRP311! It's only a few months old (bought NOS, circa ~2014) but it's running pretty good at +2~5 a day.
I have the black and the orange first gen Monsters, deserved of a place in my collection.
Got one! Made in Japan. Replaced the seconds hand by a red one of a "baby Monster". Also put some red paint in some of the parts of the bezel, to make it pop more.
Legendary watch. Love these and love the Samurai too.
I love the Seiko 🍊 Monster, first generation. thanks you for video, great job 👏
Great watch had this model years. Literally wore it everyday, it’s only took a back seat recently for a Garmin gps golf watch 🏌️♀️. Lume is fantastic, looks different and feels solid. Always gets comments. Great watch
I have this watch. Took a long time to find it. Sent it to seiko for a full service. It’s for me an ideal watch. Perfect fit, weight, style I enjoy.
I agree with many of your observations. I have the original Gen 1 Orange version which I have owned since the early 2000's, I always wanted an original black, I bought the Gen 3 with the 6R, that movement failed within a year. I purchased a replacement movement which is still sitting on my dresser waiting to be installed.
Nice review. I used to think the Monsters were "a bit too much" design-wise. But..the more I've seen of them the more I'd want one (I really, really promise that has never ever happened before with a watch model. Seriously !!)
Very nice. Much nicer than the currant monster.
I recently was able to purchase an older Baby Tuna, the SRP227. Not the same as the Monster but similar, it also has a steel Bezel. It also was a pre-Prospex model, no “X” on the dial.
Still have my second gen Dracula monster. Don't really wear it much anymore but it was my first Seiko and introduced me to the hobby. So have a soft spot for it...
Nice watch and video and thanks for the review. So the teeth markers on the monster came out in the 2nd. gen.
I still have the one I bought back in 2010. It lost all black paint on the bezel due to wear and UV exposure, but works like a charm. Also: you can literally read at night using the fully charged lume. No kidding!
1st Gen = Best Gen!
Oh, Seiko: What has happened to you?
Yeah man. I just got into watches and seeing my prospective watches like seiko snk809, alpinist, monster, sarb, skx and sumo bring discontinued really made me sad. I dont think I'll be able to buy them all at reasonable prices now that the prices are going uphill. The seiko 5 line up reintroduction happened only when I got interested in them TT
Nah, Gen 2 is the best
@@daddykool9507 Nah ; first gen will always be the first gen(the one that started this unique diver line) Second gen is just another monster.
@@Ge0rGi. no…no….no ! according to Seiko watch community Gen 2 is the real collector items!! The price is reflecting my arguments…. Hahaha
@@daddykool9507 Nah! First gen are older watches with more basic movement, that's why they are cheaper. But first gen looks better. So, second gen are just second gen, nothing more. Hahaha 😂
I bought one as soon as it came out (orange of course), absolutely love it still!
However, due to lack of wrist time I am looking to sell and let someone else enjoy it now.Unmarked crystal and bezel on bracelet with Seiko rubber strap unused also.
Have the new artic edition, men i love it. I was sceptical to seiko because of precision but i get on average +5 a day. Bought it yesterday.
Finally a watch that moved the dive watch game on 20 years ago
A love or hate watch unique enough to have a big following and already collectable look after yours .
Legend!!!
I have the first gen orange and just bought the black on a silicone strap. Paid 280 but was still worth it.
I know it sounds controversial, but I have always loved this watch, but wanted one with hand winding and hacking so I picked up an Island Watch, ISL-57 and I love it. I also have owned a Seiko SRP 309, 2nd Gen Orange Monster since 2014.
Great video
I have the Gen2 "Orange" Monster SRP309. Although it does have a bit smaller hour markers than the original one, it still shines like a torch in the dark.
I will never sell my OM.
I own the same one. For me it’s a real keeper!
I still love my OG Monster. It’s funny how it became collectible. I bought it discounted on Amazon forever ago before it became hot.
I got mine second hand they were after 100GBP for it I haggled and got it for 70. It has grown on me. Not 5hat I ever disliked it I did 5hink it was a bit ott 20yrs ago.
i bought one 2nd Gen orange monster around 2015 i think... when it ain't that expensive . absolutely love the original and very manly and unique design which isn't just another Submariner clone style dive watch. i will probably never sell my monster. the after/post 3rd gen monsters regrettable no longer looks like a monster anymore nowadays.
Rocket ship. Love that!!!! Made my day!
I got into watches when the 3rd gen came out so I got one of those.
Had the Gen2 4R36 JDM spec and I loved it... doubled my money on it when I sold it 2 years later. Same colour as this one but with the shark teeth markers
Maybe doubled your money, but you lost your watch.
@@harun5105 I’ve only got one watch that I’m emotionally attached too and that’s a Swiss Midland that my father gave me.... he bought it when I was born in 1970 and gifted it to me when I was 40 back in 2010. I had it restored and serviced and it’s 51 years old now. All other watches are sold to finance other watches, I wear and enjoy and then move on to finance the next... no loss, just the joy of owning and wearing something else each time. Loved my Monster, but not enough to keep it... somebody else now owns it and hopefully is enjoying it at least as much as I did, if not more
@@darcyphillips70 Nice reply, thank you for sharing your story 👍🏻
do someone known how many links comes originally with the watch?
That bracelet really is a work of art. Makes the watch worth 10x more.
You should review a Seiko Lord Matic. They are very underrated watches.
I have had mine since 2004
I love this watch, my fist diver!
Just picked up an gen 1 orange monster. To take the sting out of the cost I’ve just added a gen 2 orange monster in brand new unworn condition - ouch
Had to order Heimdallr homage of the 2nd gen monster because I don't like the modern PWD versions, modern dials and it's current overprice.
Classic Black Monster almost 24 years now
Sold mine a few years ago. Only watch I've ever regretted selling. 😣
For me. The Gen-1 is still best. Got my OM Gen 1 about 10yrs ago. I do not think i will ever sell it. Some watches are just too special to sell.
A very Well known model 🤠
The current variants are ugly. I just want a gigiantic metal bezel and day/date and spiky minute indicators. How hard is it?

yeah I agree. first monster is the best
Still pretty expensive, would a heimdallr homage be as good?
Save for the original one, it's not that expensive and in my opinion, it's too unique to bu ity as a homage or a copy.
I think an Islander ISL-57 would be your best choice. It’s very faithful to the Black Dialed 1st Gen & also has hand winding & hacking.
@@clontstable1 you know what I've been looking closer at some of their watches as they offer some sweet new colors and dial texture.
Thank god at least I can buy a Chinese homage with the nh36 nowadays, the new monster it's not as cool as the old one.
2nd Gen imho was the best, can't afford the resell of them so I opted for the very affordable Heimdallr Monster homage with specs that Seiko should come with standard.
I just picked up an Islander ISL-57, which is nearly identical to the 1st Gen Black Monster.
JooosGandozsx....oh I missed its, and remember you again after change the rubber strap to bracelet ...but after that lossed, after always in the box more than 5 years.....hikhikhik, now I must kept more carefully the orange ones....
damn! so handsome. i recently bought a fake one and i'm ripping my hair off for it. this vid should've come out eariler and warned me. huhuhaha
@lrk2051 nope. what i got was what they call "the mumbai special". it's an almost accurate replica except for some minute details like the day/date display and such
I miss my gen 2 Dracula Monster.
As you should. That’s a great watch!
Yo
I've made a few quid buying and selling monster variants. My mate practically raised his son from proceeds of sale of monster and various casio.
