I gave up playing bass guitar in bands 15 years ago - just got sick of doing the gigs. But every now and than I hear a blast from the past that makes me ache to play again, and this is one of them. That voice, that groove, as good as it gets!
Even the way she performed this was the most perfect way to do it. The passion in the face, The body movements to the beat. Just WOW, I was born in 1999 and will be carrying this music to my kids like my family did.
People used to make fun of me when I listened to this song over and over. So tell me, is there something wrong with this song? Absolutely nothing - The bass guitar and the arrangement and obviously her voice fits together so perfectly. Still up to today, this is one of my all time favourites and will always be.
@@nickriffed9775 I have my doubts about it. It's not impossible, but what makes you think so? It does sound like a bass, you can even hear the noise of strings being stopped on the 2 & 4.
@@TobiaTesan you can have as many doubts as you like, my friend, but it doesn't alter the facts. One aspect of the song listeners have frequently noted is the tune's distinctive fretless bassline. While a common belief holds that the melody was played using an actual fretless bass guitar, Myles' bassist for the rest of her self-titled album, Steve Webster, acknowledged in an online discussion forum that he did not perform the bassline on "Black Velvet" himself; rather, it was Tyson who played the riff on a synthesizer, using a fretless bass sample.[7]

This song is legit my favorite from that era. I’m only 34 but gives me so many nostalgic memories of my mom playing it whilst growing up. Never gets old! ❤
I'm 38 and when I was just little I mean like 5 maybe I can remember this song comming out and running to the tv and singing my little heart away everytime it came on. Here I am an adult and STILL jam everytime I play it. Brings memories of my childhood for sure. . My parents would get me to sing in frnt of everyone cause noone could believe I knew it all at that age hahaha crazy
Pulling a recording session like this together must have been a huge task. The outcome yields such a smooth reward to us, the general public, we almost didn't notice due to the fantastic song writing. Likely some of the best musicians in the world at that time. It plays on the radio and nobody really notices because there are no flaws
My high school Business teacher once told us quite proudly how, in her younger years, she once sang this (awesome) song in a radio karaoke contest. To this day it reminds me of her.
She had all kinds of hits in Canada, the US radio stations/ music industry wouldn't pick her up coz she wouldn't play their industry games and that's how things work in the music industry in America
This song was nominated for a grammy in 1992, I think. It was the same year that Mariah Carey debuted her song. Don’t remember it, but .Mariah won the grammy. I always thought Allanah was a much better singer!
Easily the most talented and versatile female rock vocalist of all time. The husk and raspiness in her voice are so subtle and unique that it blows my mind every time when I hear Black Velvet.
Love it. Your Dad is awesome for turning you on right! My dad turned me on to a lot of awesome music and I still think of him when I hear them play. This song....I have to say my hubby turned me onto it....and yes, it is amazing. Kudos to your dad.
@@worldhello1234 absolutely not ! This is one of those crazy comments from people who have no idea. Her Rockinghorse album is one of the best productions of the 90s, and I mean any genre of music
This tune is just perfect. It reminds me of that perfect night when everything is just right. I won't comment Alannah's voice cause she sang this perfectly. Her voice has so much emotion and nostalgia of times which I never lived. But the guitarist really, really nailed it. These are some of the tastiest blues licks ever. The song's opening makes me feel like I'm somewhere in the wild, at the banks of Mississippi. If you haven't, listen to the new version of the song that Alannah recorded recently, it's great.
@@TheLittleRedVixen I got no vote but reckon why this girl didn't really make the big time? Worked personal security for some of Nashville royalty and there was always talk, that I really can't repeat exactly, about the "powers" in Nashville and music in general, that decided who was in and who was out. Talent wasn't the prime driver of who that might be. Met some of em....I wasn't even looked at. Invisible. Kinda way it was supposed to be but there are ways of bein ignored that are more disrespectful. My life and living had nothing to do with them and....ah, nevermind. This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battle with cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people. She’s always in our hearts
La escuché en la radio , en 91.7 y me encanto , pero ni recordaba el nombre y en UA-cam solo puse , girl sing rock blues y listo fue el primer resultado 😂😂😂😂😂 genial que buen servicio ❤❤❤
Countless artists have covered this song through the years.. a lot did a really good job at it, a few even did a phenomenal job, but no one came close. Alannah truly is outstanding.
Some bands and artist don't understand. They try to top a song by covering. Won't never happen to a really good Song. Just changing one member of the original lineup can surely destroy the "feeling". Songs grow into musicians and bands, its not just "songs". No one can ever top this. Also: you can never sing or play the same exact way as another person. This is a fact.
Man this songs brings me back to when I was 8 years old sitting in the back of my fathers car while we were on our way to wherever I don't know. What I do know is that back then I loved this song, I didn't understand what it was about as I'm from Belgium and speak Dutch. What I did understood was that it was an awesome song and it stuck in my head for years even now I listen to it from time to time being a 31 year old man I thank my father for listening to this kind of music
Yes I was about that age, & we lived in Germany on military base. I did not know what the song meant but later I learned & visited Memphis. It's a cool place to go
I'm sure you think you're cool when you "accidentally" play this song around guest...I bet you're like I hope they hear that bass line its so cool...then you roll up ur sleeves and look around like your tuff 😂😂
Its just that "Treble " picking near the pickup is just so cool..I blew out some subs in a club when they upgraded a amp with way too much power for the speakers when I played this song :-;)

This girl owns this song, wow!!! May be a one hit wonder but it's a fucking masterpeice, damn none on this planet or any other could rock this song the way she did
one hit wonder? The entire self titled1989 album was fire. Love is, Kickstart My Heart, Just One Kiss, Still Got This Thing For You. Give it a listen. It's a shame most people only know this song lol. Her music didn't track because she got fucked over by toronto music producers and they didnt send her to tour in the US with the big rock bands at the time.
One hit wonder, and what a pity. She has everything: voice, looks, talent, stage presence...She should have become a 10000 wonders. What happened to her? May the label records at that time decided to stop investing in blues and the girl didn't want to ghange her style??
You bet , I give it few thousand “ thumbs up “ - my daughter plays GTA , yet she finds the old music annoying as heck . But it’s nice that they incorporate decent music into it instead of the “ ghastly, horrifying and hyper sexual “ music from the new generation of young people.
I knew this record from GTA 5, but I just came because it's so damn nice hearing a bluesy rhythm with such a smooth woman's voice like that, which isn't singing about a full-blown degrading lifestyle!
Alannah is drop dead gorgeous and radioactive HOT . This song meant a lot while going through some very hard times . I wish her the best and hope she sees this comment .
Quantum Mechanic first time I heard this song was in 1990, when it topped the Billboard singles chart. The next time was in a restaurant called THE SHEEP’S HAID in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2015. Brought back an avalanche of great memories!

asioczek7 Elvis was born in Mississippi in a dry spell he knew how to dance and sing so he went to Memphis where his songs made the girls go wild. that’s what I gathered in reading the lyrics
David Bently: true, but his parents moved to the outskirts of Memphis when he was young. They were poor and lived on the other side of the tracks so he grey up around blues singers. They taught him. Even his “look” fake from the store in Memphis where the blues legends bought their clothes. Blue suede shoes, long collar, etc. He didn’t go to Memphis for or after fame, he came from it. He was surrounded by Gospel and Blues. So when some people say he “stole” the R&R sound, the truth is he was part of it. They welcomed him in and taught him blues. But his singing style was all his own!
When this came out my now wife and I got our first place together, we had this playing in the backyard and we had the neighbours yelling over the fence, TURN IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw an interview with miss myles , for this track she went down to the southern states and spent a few weeks around their accents to nail the track.. Earliest her best hit! Really sets a tone 😊

You are damn right. It is one of the best rock songs ever!!!
Great bass line but it wasn't a bass guitar.
It was recorded on a synth.

I met her one night after a small concert, she played black velvet that night. Still gives me goosebumps.
Lyrics:
Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama's dancin' with a baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin' like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
Up in Memphis the music's like a heatwave
White lightning, bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of every schoolgirl
"Love Me Tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
Every word of every song that he sang was for you
In a flash, he was gone, it happened so soon
What could you do?
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
Black velvet and that little boy's smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please
If you please

Pulling a recording session like this together must have been a huge task. Don't be surprised if she makes a comeback. Forget the music industry. This is talent. Mrs. Myles.
A comeback? At her age? I wish this could be possible but the most probable comeback scenario would be as a judge in a talent competition
Unfortunately she has very severe back problems and is almost a cripple. Real shame as she was a sensational artist and extremely attractive as well.
Mrs? Myles is a stage name which she thought was better than her birth name "Byles." Also, she never married.
Pity she didn’t have more hit songs. She has a great singing voice. And plus she is super gorgeous
Indeed. She's really underrated singer.
She does have a really really good voice
She had all kinds of hits in Canada, the US radio stations/ music industry wouldn't pick her up coz she wouldn't play their industry games and that's how things work in the music industry in America

Love this song its such a classic! one of my all time fav's and written about Elvis, Alannah has such a great voice.
You are right.
There are several lyrics in the song that point only to one person who the song was dedicated to & written about, Elvis.
Possibly, the sexiest record ever recorded, the sexiest performance too.
Sadly careless whispers take that place

Some bands and artist don't understand. They try to top a song by covering. Won't never happen to a really good Song. Just changing one member of the original lineup can surely destroy the "feeling". Songs grow into musicians and bands, its not just "songs". No one can ever top this. Also: you can never sing or play the same exact way as another person. This is a fact.

asioczek7 Elvis was born in Mississippi in a dry spell he knew how to dance and sing so he went to Memphis where his songs made the girls go wild. that’s what I gathered in reading the lyrics
