Yup!!! A very transitional decade, I didn't even understand it as I grew up in it. I weep as we now regress before it humanity wise. This was before Queen(Freddy) even came out. Shit man, it was the Cosby decade! America loved black people. Oh, what 100 years from now people will think of us(2017), when the 80's had it so clear with all it's heavy make-up, big hair, neon glory, but people were people and live and let live was a common theme.
Pat Benatar was something entirely different in the music industry and was an icon. I think what made her stand out was this expression determination and resilience that seem to be at the very essence of her unique creative style. This video has a special place in my heart because it tells a story of finding strength and resilience when the world believes that it has succeeded in attempting to unjustly validate you with judgement and ultimatum. The dance moves are simple, powerful and displays the resilience to fight back against adversity and to find meaning in self again. I love Pat Benatar. Thank you for the memories.
Damn I wish I was born in 1975 so I could enjoy the 80's and 90's music, great tv shows and movies and have some real fun and good time. But noooooo I got to be 23 now and living in this fuck up time. Hands up don't shoot! Good bless all.
Surely there can't be many better openings to a song than the "whoa whoa whoa we are STRONG"....! the passion in it hits you like a bus....what a legend Pat is
So good. Feminist anthem way before its time. Live it, learn it. This was something else. Outstanding, as she always was. And her ensemble here was titanic, including the males made to look bad. Just a great video of a great song.
We are young (Heartache to heartache) Heartache to heartache (We stand) We stand No promises (No demands) No demands (Love is a battlefield) Love is a battlefield Whoa We are strong No one can tell us we're wrong Searching our hearts for so long Both of us knowing Love is a battlefield You're making me go Then making me stay Why do you hurt me so bad? It would help me to know Do I stand in your way Or am I the best thing you've had? Believe me, believe me I can't tell you why But I'm trapped by your love And I'm chained to your side We are young Heartache to heartache We stand No promises No demands Love is a battlefield We are strong No one can tell us we're wrong Searching our hearts for so long Both of us knowing Love is a battlefield When I'm losing control Will you turn me away Or touch me deep inside? And when all this gets old Will it still feel the same There's no way this will die But if we get much closer I could lose control And if your heart surrenders You'll need me to hold We are young Heartache to heartache We stand No promises No demands Love is a battlefield We are strong No one can tell us we're wrong Searching our hearts for so long Both of us knowing Love is a battlefield

She continues to play it - sorry. I’m a grammar nerd and continued makes it sounds like Pat is no longer with us. She and Neil opened for Pink in Los Angeles last month. I was there. I’ve actually seen her and Neil multiple times in the last decade. Their love story is beyond inspiring❤ Neil shreds better than ever and the lady can still sing. I think Pat defines the word power with her incredible voice and range. I have always loved this video. I was 21 in 83 and just starting to figure out who I am. I still know the somewhat simple choreography! My fake hips and fused spine don’t move the way they used to, but I still try to do the moves! Long live Pat Benatar!!!

The story in the video irrespective of the song is actually quite sad. Her waving goodbye to her brother, writing to him, the regretful demeanor of her parents in later scenes
women were kicking so much ass back then! Madonna, Pat Benetar, Cindi Lauper, kim Carnes, Tina Turner, Annie Lennox, the Pointer Sisters, Stevie Nicks, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Chan, Debbie Harry, Dolly Parton, Chrissie Hynde, Grace Jones, Heart.
Patti, you really told the truth that love can and always will be a battlefield. Now according to the dance sequence you've did with the women background dancers. It showed how women have more power and they wouldn't take any more from abusive men. Watching that video at 3 yrs young in 1983 turned MTV into the best music channel of the 80s.
People ask me why do I listen to "old music" still. The answer is simple: Its better! Not to be biased but the 80's-90's music was the best. Everything from Pop, Rock, Hip-hop, and R&B. And this song is one of the greats!
+Dwight “Denjin” Johnson The reason why people think older music is better is because nobody plays the crap 80s and 90s music. There's just as much good music nowadays, there just seems to be less of it because you hear all the bad and mediocre music at the same time.
+SunBeast66 I respectfully disagree. As the time passes, less and less substance can be found in songs. A lot of remakes, sampling, and regurgitated lyrics, and sound.
Dwight Johnson Music taste is entirely subjective though. I'm sure people from the 40s would have complained at the time about how terrible 80s and 90s music is.
+Dwight “Denjin” Johnson I totally agree. The markets have changed so much and with all the new technology and how fast information gets out the music industry is more about the next poster and download they can sell you as oppose to any substance. I think the 80s was the perfect overlap. The 60s and 70s was mostly substance period! The 80s where where the mixture of substance, poppy fun, and sales/promotion came together. The Late 90s on it has become just about promotion and sales. They just need you to last at least 6 months, sell a few 100,000 downloads, posters, ring tones, etc..they on to the next one. One more thing to considers is the target market. This may sound mean, but when you look back at the 60s to the early 80s...the average 11 year old girl did not control the amount of $ spent as they do today. That crowd today controls how BILLIONS of dollars are spent...and I'm sorry to say, but if you are trying to find the next Bob Dyaln, Deep Purple, or Led Zepplin...you are not gonna get those 11 year old dollars lol. Now Justin Bieber, Talylor Swift (whom I do like lol), and One Direction...they get those dollars for you. Substance you will not find though.
I’m pretty sure she made this music hoping that it would last forever and people would still be listening 100 years from now... so who cares how the young generation found this master piece. Just be glad they’re keeping it alive .
Pat Benatar is awesome! Forty years on her music still makes me happy. I find myself singing along the lyrics and reminiscing about my high school days. In my opinion the music from that generation far surpasses anything that had come before or since.
common psychological trap, every person bonds with the music that was pervasive when they were between 12 and 16. thats why each generation thinks 'the music when i was a teenager was the best there ever was.' youre welcome to enjoy it, but there is no 'best music'
I was a kid on the street when this song came out, It was a song of hope. that things get better, they did. this song helped through ruff times...I will be fifty one. Thank You Pat and band,
I’m 11 years old and when you have parents that lived through the 80s you live through the 80s this is now my favorite song! Thank you for the likes I wasn’t expecting that!!!
Nothing wrong with it being your favorite song, but be honest with yourself; you lived through the 2010s. I'm about to turn 31 and I didn't even live through the 80s.
Glad you like it! If you like her music I have a few more of her songs to recommend. Shadows of the night, Promises in the dark (that one is my favorite), We belong, Hit me with your best shot, Heartbreaker, Fire and ice, Invincible. A lot, I know, but they are all great.
There are two versions of this video. I didn't realize until I seen this version, that the song is actually about women empowering themselves and their self- esteem. Which made this version of the video make sense to me.
everything felt genuine, real and there was so much less cynicism and irony that is present today. somehow life was more natural in a good way, the way it should be lived - magical.

Dedicating this moment to Travis Wesley Edmiston of Spring Valley CA, I met on Cinco de Mayo 1983. He loved and idolized Pat Benatar. I miss you boo! RIP
We don’t get it like this anymore ‼️ Thank GOD I grew in the 80s❤ …There’s nothing like it

They don’t make music like they did back then.
MTV was a true thing back then. The music and the videos are iconic. Miss those days.
Some is better!
*if you are comparing this to pop music of today, then you are right. There are alot of amazing songs and albums of today, you are just too lazy to look for those, since you are only exposed to "pop" music as if it is the only music in the world.
i agree with that. i think they need to change mtv to something else since they no longer play music videos
Hi 👋, how are you doing
This is so 80s it bring tears to my eyes from my wonderful teenage memories! Thank you God for making me a teenager in the 80s!

The decade was so intense and colorful. No other like it in terms of clothes, music.
Hi Mia, how are you doing today?
I wasnt a teen yet but I lived for those Power Vocals of the 80's
This lady is by far one of the greatest rock stars of the 1980s! I’m a black guy and I can listen to her all day & nite and twice on Sundays! Pat is the s*#t!!
Me too
how is being black related to the music you listen to? man I'm not white but ehhhh?????
Am I the only one who loves the farewell moment at 4:45 with the protagonist saying goodbye to each of her fellows, each in a unique way?
Yes! I always liked it!
how 80s !! loved that decade

I agree! good times
Fantastic wasn't it !
i really enjoyed it... was born in 1973 so the 80's were perfect, especially 1988/89
Jane G Seda me to. I'm 32

I grew up listening to this in the 80'z as a lil kid with my Mother

In the video 30 year old Pat Benetar plays a girl half her age. Her father (Trey Wilson) is actually only 5 years older than her. ;-) Great 80's song.
rif42 So you're saying that her father had a child at 5 years?
It was common in the 80's to have 30-year old actors playing 16-year olds, so it didn't really even stick out in that context
Bunghole.

We are young
(Heartache to heartache)
Heartache to heartache
(We stand)
We stand
No promises
(No demands)
No demands
(Love is a battlefield)
Love is a battlefield
Whoa
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
You're making me go
Then making me stay
Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way
Or am I the best thing you've had?
Believe me, believe me
I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love
And I'm chained to your side
We are young
Heartache to heartache
We stand
No promises
No demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield
When I'm losing control
Will you turn me away
Or touch me deep inside?
And when all this gets old
Will it still feel the same
There's no way this will die
But if we get much closer
I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders
You'll need me to hold
We are young
Heartache to heartache
We stand
No promises
No demands
Love is a battlefield
We are strong
No one can tell us we're wrong
Searching our hearts for so long
Both of us knowing
Love is a battlefield

@Adriane Ross so lovely how are you doing today
Hello 🤗 Adriane, how are you doing today
Dwight Johnson
Music taste is entirely subjective though.
Substance you will not find though.
mrhoffame Good points! Back then there were MANY great artists. Now its hard to even call them that. And the reasons are as you stated.

Mostly hilarious. It ruined an otherwise ok video lol
I love that song, It reminds me of the good old times. Good music will never go out of style, Don't ever forget it.

OMG. I do not get tired of this, ever! Prince litterally possessed by his guitar. Unbelievable.

I guess, but they don't show what she did to get kicked out. I knew a girl who got kicked out at 18, at the time (I was 20) I thought it cruel. Then I got to know the girl. It's a hard thing to say, but she deserved it.
david bryan lol! Im sure her character in the video was about 18 lol !! She did good!
a waste of time....
I'm in Los Angeles quarantine and listening to Pat Benatar songs. Life is OK.

L.A. is in a gradual but definite state of decline . . . and has been since long before Covid-19 hit. Despite Pat Banatar's wonderful music, I'd say that life in L.A. is not okay.
