Hi Gary, I worked in one of his restaurants back in the early 90s, at the Hyde Park hotel , the canteen, and finally, the Mirabelle, the food a little different back then! I've only been to one of his chain restaurants a few days before opening, I was surprised myself at all his pictures as he certainly doesn't have that much love for himself in real life! It's the idea of the branding team, £5 to sit by the window, very naughty, even ryan Air doesn't go that far!

I totally agree. We use to visit a Italian restaurant near Richmond with an elderly relative. I’ve been to that Steakhouse many times - celebrations, family Christmas do’s, treats and whatnot. They have always had the £5 surcharge for window seats, which is as you say a ripoff but the sensation is so electric I have always paid it. The food is normally very good indeed though I have sometimes wished I’d ordered something else … as you’d expect, really. Service is top notch. The private dining room is spectacular. Amd they sometimes have live music. The singer came round the tables once and sang Happy Birthday to my dear ole Ma on her 86th and stopped for a lovely chat into the bargain. Special memories, nothing to do with MPW really, but just a moderateky high class joint that is not outrageously expensive. I’d still recommend it though I no longer live in Brum.
@@GaryEats I’d pay NOT to sit anywhere near a window that high up. Somebody once told me about lunching at the restaurant at the top of the old Post Office tower. The restaurant revolved slowly, but what my friend hadn’t realised was that her table wasn’t where she had left it. Panic!
Great review as always Gary. Marco Pierre White is one of my favourite chefs- great chef , remarkable life story. Food looks tasty mate. Keep up the great work.
Unlike some chefs whose histrionics may be to add tension for the viewer, MPW who was one of the first of the AYcs ( Angry Young Chefs) seems to walk the walk. He did have Gordon as a protege, and of the two, even when the chef isn’t there, I think you get a destination meal to savour from him. yes pricy, but he’s passionate about his name and food so he probably designed the menu to be easy to get right when he’s not there. The antithesis to those complicated pile one plates but with small portions, it’s quite simple and a decent amount of meat. I heard that he is also quite passionate about the product when he advertises it so the integrity is there too. Glad you liked it.
Marco Pierre White is my favourite chef and I was glad you enjoyed the food. I live in South Africa and we dont have a charge to get a good seat. Normally when you book you ask and if its available its yours. Also why bowls, would have been nice to see the lamb meal with the potatoes served on a fancy plate. Great video Gary
Gary, this is jsuch a good review, so well balanced, considered and informative. Your campaign against bowles for mains is well measured! National treasure status coming your way. You're also very funny and entertaining. What a gem!
I finally realised why I look forward to another Gary review: the viewer feels as if he/she is at the table with you. It's not a review, it's more like a regular conversation you have with a table guest, just talking about the food. That guest is just a bit quiet. 😁 It's little things like "Just bear with me, I have to try that again". Great talking to you Gary! I look forward to the next one😆
Totally agree with you. This is actually difficult to achieve, but he does this with such expertise , making one comfortable as if they were the guest. This man will go far, as displayed by the volume of subs he has gained within a year. Not to mention the volume of comments he replies to on each vlog. Have a lovely day. S
I’ve met Marco PW twice when he was on-board a couple of cruises I went on - Norway and the Caribbean. He’s an absolute gent. All you see on TV is not the real him! We were on board for Christmas Day and he did a 7-course meal and came round all the tables while we were eating it signing menus. I was really impressed by that and I’m very keen to try one of his restaurants especially after seeing this video.
He really is a very approachable chap. I met him and we were chatting about stuff that went on during the pandemic, he listens to everything you say like he's genuinely interested in your points of view. VERY down to earth and a razor sharp wit
Hi Gary. As always a good balanced review. I live in Birmingham and a couple of years ago and as a party of four people we decided to try Marco's in the Cube building. We also booked window seats as we had an evening booking and thought the evening view would be nice in the night darkness and see Birmingham lit up at night. We were charged £5 per person to sit at a window seat. When we were shown to our table we sat a semi circled seat facing away from the window ? Extra £20 to face the people serving in the restaurant ? I complained about the seating and they wavered the £20 charge. As for the food. None of our party thought the food really lived up to expections. Bland and over priced. Marco's has maybe seen the poor reviews from many sites in recent months and have upped there game. The one positive i can say is that when we visited we also stayed at the hotel in the Cube. The hotel was very good. The breakfast was included in the hotel stay and extremley good and also served in the same restraunt where you could sit by any window seat for no extra charge.
Thank you very much for your comment, I’m sorry to hear you had a disappointing meal but hopefully he has upped the game. Regarding the window seats, I think the price is ridiculous. At least the customer service was good when you visited.
MPW has a vegan menu, that surprised and pleased me. The yolk running out of that egg looked like olive oil to begin with, I think it was the overhead lights. Tasty looking meal, thanks for the enjoyable video both
Great review as always Gary.....really enjoy the energy you put into your reviews. The food here looks great and tasty. I would say the price is justified considering that it is fine dining and a great location.
Hi Gary. I agree on 2 points. Firstly, perhaps a couple of small roast potatoes would have gone well with the lamb and second, being charged an extra £5 to sit by a window is completely unnecessary. perhaps they have got that idea from some airlines who charge you extra to sit in certain seats on an aircraft if you get my gist.
The lack of potatoes and the serving dish for the lamb didn’t “bowl” me over. Neither did the pretentious picture where he brags about making Gordon Ramsay cry, or the £5 charge for a table near the window (no offence Birmingham). Am I bothered about visiting? Is Marco Pierre White bothered if I visit? No.
Good to see you are on your travels and have to say, have had a lovely meal there. Marco is a very nice, very intelligent man. Enjoy your trip to the Midlands and thank you for another good to watch review. You have such an easy to watch style! x
“Well, may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Birmingham window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeasts swinging majestically...(Fawlty Towers).
Im a foodie fanatic & you sir are such a breath of fresh air & joy to watch. I’ve watched a few of your videos & I can’t stop watching them. (Lots to go through 🤗) Keep up the great content. If you’re ever in Sheffield I recommend the restaurant La Luna (Italian) authentic & you can take your own booze 🍷
I went there years ago but not for food just cocktails. The food looked alright but I agree about being charged £5 to sit by the window, what a rip-off. And the main meal should have had potato with it . I wouldn't have been happy listening to the commotion in the kitchen and should not charge service charges as they couldn't even give you a serving spoon for the potato side dish. Like most of these restaurants, they are pretentious because of the endorsed celebrity, and you are basically there to be seen.
Another great review. The quote about White making Ramsay cry in White's POV when questioned about it, his reply was "I didn't make him cry, he chose to."
I love Marco Pierre. He’s so charismatic and as a young man was incredibly handsome as well.😊To be fair he retired from cooking in 1999 so is hardly going to be turning up in his restaurant. He’s a full-time restaurateur nowadays who’s downed the tools. The food looked delicious so he obviously employs competent chefs. They are probably queueing up to cook at one of his restaurants as it would certainly look good on a CV. I agree with you the restaurant itself looked somewhat dated but that scotch egg looked divine .😋. I would enjoy demolishing that!xx
Hey Gary, I believe if I hit the like button, then YT pop up a random to ten viewers, (how I found you), so when myself and other fans hit like the chances are at worse 1 person per fan will join, I'm looking forward to seeing half a million, you deserve it m8.
Well gary....you had made Caroline and I cry....cry laughing at some of your stuff😅 You have a very unique style and it really works!! Yet another top quality review ❤
I met Marco Pierre White when he had a menu running on a P&O cruise I went on, he was greeting the diners as they entered the restaurant. I was chatting with him for a good few minutes at the entrance, he asked where we were from in the UK, then chatted about football when I said we're from North London! He only stopped talking because the staff told us to hurry up as there were other guests behind us waiting to speak to him and get in, he genuinely seemed like a nice chap and the food was good that evening 👍🏼 Nice review, Gary. The look on your face when you had the first mouthful of lamb said it all, you were in heaven 😄 Shame about the £5 charge, completely unnecessary as you said. Keep it up guys! 👍🏼
@@warrenbarns-2401 he can be very charming - a bit of a split personality. Often the result of unhealed trauma. As human beings we are all light and shade.
Marco deserves some credit for the fact that he worked hard to get where he is today but his ego gets me down. The photos of him all over the walls, the fake accent, the country squire tweed, the legend of him throwing a customer out because they asked for a salt cellar, the Knorr Stock Pots etc etc. Unbearable psuedo star. He's a bloody cook for God's sake
@@GaryEats But he doesn't blow up like Ramsay. He says menacing things in a very calm manner like a mafia boss. I saw him once outside my office building in Birmingham and he looked terrifying. I thought about asking him for a selfie but was too scared 😂
Marco Pierre White's speech at the Oxford Union (available on UA-cam) is one of the most interesting talks a chef has ever given. Such an intense man....who ended up doing sticky toffee pudding!
Great to see you in my home city Gary and glad you enjoyed it! It’s a great place to go for a drink at night with the views 😎 also great on a sunny day, Friday afternoons etc.
To play devil's advocat for a second about the extra charge for the potatoes: They weren't exactly plain potatoes and the portion size was quite large. Secondly, not everyone is going to want potatoes as the side order, some people will want vegetables or a salad. So it makes sense not to automatically include potatoes in the meal.
Seperate comment because it's a different issue. I have problem with the term "expensive". Expensive compared to what? If there are two equally good restaurants and one charges 50% more, then that is an expensive restaurant (or more precisely bad VFM). There are off the shelf watches that retail for $300,000.
You are welcome to your opinion, but I don’t think so, I compare the restaurants like for like so this one will be comparable to another celebrity chef one such as Jamie Oliver
Great review, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Marco's is one of my favorite places to go. Slightly old school vibe to the setting and menu but the food is always amazing.
Love the enthusiasm, Gary. And, yes, bowls are for soup or porridge and, at a pinch, spaghetti. But not for a main course. There is just nowhere to put the utensils except in the dish, not good. But that food did looks really tasty especially the lamb. Like you, ice cream on a dessert is a must. Great review again. Thanks for sharing..
Making Gordon Ramsay cry is quite the claim to fame!! 🤔🤷♂🤣 It is abundantly clear by all the pictures Marco Pierre White loves himself however he delivers on the food so perhaps a bit of self congratulations is in order. I did think the entire meal looked really good. I also think it's a bit greedy to charge extra for a window seat. All in all I think an eight is a fair mark. Gary btw love the new shoes 👠 glad to see you spending some of your money...😊 Have a great weekend......Cheers.
Another excellent review Gary. There is a documentary about Marco that's really worth a watch, it charts his humble start in life to where he is now. Apart from the jokes' about his Knorr stock cube sponsors' his UA-cam cooking channel is great and worth a look. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Gary. I went to MPWs twice and it was excellent. The 3rd visit was not good, the food was not up to scratch. And the service was dreadful. It took 20mins for drinks to arrive. When they did a bottled beer ordered came with a glass of ice full to the top? We waited 20mins to have the mains cleared and instead of asking if we wanted dessert, coffee. A dessert menu was slapped down on the table. Funnily enough, when we asked for the bill it arrived in under 5mins. I called the next day and we never heard a thing back. I can understand we all have off days but it clearly shows bad Management. At least a, come in and have a drink, small bite, lets keep you as customers. Nothing. So never again. I work too hard to walk away feeling like that. BTW, if they charged 5euro in Dublin for a window seat youd be laughed out of the city.
I have been to this branch. They overcharge and by far the worst restaurant I have been to in my life. They completely ignore allergy requests despite reminding them numerous times and are unapologetic. They also do no reply to feedback/complaints. Would never recommend. The £5 additional window seat per head is laughable considering the view.
Soon, you're going to be recognized everywhere you go, and they'll stop putting your food in a bowl. Congratulations on the continued success of your channel 🎉. Well deserved. Another great review.
You were right to be annoyed with the fiver. Plus there should be potatoes with the 🐑. It looked really delicious though. Did CM get anything to eat? “As always”, BRILLIANT 👍
@.37 is NOT the reason he handed them back. What he said was the people judging the Michelin stars were not accomplished chefs, so he didn't want to be judged by them. I agree with that sentiment.
@@SuperSetright No. Not only one can be correct, because he has said both of those things when explaining his reasons for giving back his Michelin stars!

So glad your heading towards 150,000 subscribers so well deserved your a breath of fresh air Gary I love your videos. Love Marilyn xx
Obviously this is a chain restaurant which Marco has nothing to do with. But what is interesting is the contrast between say Germany or Japan and the UK. If a chef puts his name above the door in Germany he is there running the pass and when the diners have finished their meal he comes to the door to shake hands and thank you for your custom! Can you imagine Gordon Ramsay doing that ! 😆😆 In Japan the chef will come out and bow until you are out of sight! Once they even hailed a taxi for me! This is at 3* Michelin hostelries. Amazing hospitality! Try to imagine that in the formerly Great Britain......
The restaurant concepts are owned by Black & White Restaurant Group who franchise operation of the restaurants but they're ran to Marco's standards and they're his menu's. He does spot visits to the restaurants and we went to the Birmingham restaurant a couple of years ago and he'd been there the day before doing an inspection.
What I find unacceptable. Heather is when these chefs put their names to the restaurant they do not visit and oversee things even on a very part-time basis. I think that is simple profiteering
@@GaryEats I couldn`t agree more. I was surprised to hear that Marco actually checks the quality control as he doesn`t have anything to do with the running of the restaurants.
It's a bit silly to charge extra for a window seat, didn't even have that in London!
@@GaryEats I’d pay NOT to sit anywhere near a window that high up. Somebody once told me about lunching at the restaurant at the top of the old Post Office tower. The restaurant revolved slowly, but what my friend hadn’t realised was that her table wasn’t where she had left it. Panic!
You’re absolutely right, Gary. It’s no accolade making someone cry. Fantastic video 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you very much and I agree
Great review as always Gary. Marco Pierre White is one of my favourite chefs- great chef , remarkable life story. Food looks tasty mate. Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much, Jack
Hr's without a doubt a genius of a chef
Marco Pierre White is my favourite chef and I was glad you enjoyed the food. I live in South Africa and we dont have a charge to get a good seat. Normally when you book you ask and if its available its yours. Also why bowls, would have been nice to see the lamb meal with the potatoes served on a fancy plate. Great video Gary
I’m really pleased to hear that, and thank you very much, Michael

That is such a nice comment to make and really appreciated, thank you so very much Marc
Exactly! That's what I was trying to articulate!!!!
You didnt meet him working in a kitchen and as someone that works in a kitchen trust me he probably was worst than what he was on the Tv😂
I think he is an arse.
Seen him and was giving me dirty looks and seemed disgusted just because I spilt some pasta down me
He really is a very approachable chap. I met him and we were chatting about stuff that went on during the pandemic, he listens to everything you say like he's genuinely interested in your points of view. VERY down to earth and a razor sharp wit
That is absolutely fantastic to hear thank you very much for letting me know, Lynn

OMG That scotch egg looked amazing! Outstanding Lamb, Outstanding Review. Thanks Gary! ❤
Thank you very much
Egg too runny for me but there again I wouldn't have one as a starter.
Tasty looking meal, thanks for the enjoyable video both
Thank you very much for your wonderful comment as always Rosie ❤️
Great review as always Gary.....really enjoy the energy you put into your reviews. The food here looks great and tasty. I would say the price is justified considering that it is fine dining and a great location.
The food was very good. I just didn’t like the extra charges Mathew
You never cease to amaze, me.
Thanks for sharing, shared.
Thank you very much, Gary
I completely agree with you Robert, this isn't a plane
Airlines charge for first class seats, why not restaurants? Think about it.
There is nothing to think about.
@@robertmansfield2856 True, if there's nothing between the ears you can't even begin.
Maybe they put the lamb in a bowl to help prevent you chasing the peas around a plate . Food looked very nice .
I disagree terribly bad presentation is my opinion SJ
A bowl probably holds the heat better than a plate.
No.
I agree completely. Not a restaurant I care to visit.
@@edz Charging extra for a table and service is an absolute con imo.
Was there a choice of potatoes dishes or other things to go with the lamb otherwise I can't see the point.
Yeah I was puzzled with charge for the seat 😮

Imagine charging a fiver to look at Birmingham. Not exactly the Grand Canyon to be brutally honest.

It's a bit of a liberty the extra £5 charge

I love Marco Pierre. He’s so charismatic and as a young man was incredibly handsome as well.😊To be fair he retired from cooking in 1999 so is hardly going to be turning up in his restaurant. He’s a full-time restaurateur nowadays who’s downed the tools. The food looked delicious so he obviously employs competent chefs. They are probably queueing up to cook at one of his restaurants as it would certainly look good on a CV.
I agree with you the restaurant itself looked somewhat dated but that scotch egg looked divine .😋. I would enjoy demolishing that!xx

I met Marco Pierre White when he had a menu running on a P&O cruise I went on, he was greeting the diners as they entered the restaurant.
I was chatting with him for a good few minutes at the entrance, he asked where we were from in the UK, then chatted about football when I said we're from North London!
He only stopped talking because the staff told us to hurry up as there were other guests behind us waiting to speak to him and get in, he genuinely seemed like a nice chap and the food was good that evening 👍🏼
Nice review, Gary. The look on your face when you had the first mouthful of lamb said it all, you were in heaven 😄

My favourite Marco quote "Show some respect, you don't know what I am" delivered in a very calm, measured manner. Chilling.
That's a great spin on, "Do you know who I am?" The menacing 'what' sums up MPW.
I would say he’s got a very bad temper Mark
Marco deserves some credit for the fact that he worked hard to get where he is today but his ego gets me down. The photos of him all over the walls, the fake accent, the country squire tweed, the legend of him throwing a customer out because they asked for a salt cellar, the Knorr Stock Pots etc etc. Unbearable psuedo star. He's a bloody cook for God's sake
@@bobikdylan Exactly. Thats what makes the comment so chilling.

100% agree with you about the bowl and the greenery. Bowls are for breakfast and soup.
Just frustrating to dig into Terrance!
And puddings..!😂
Pasta bowls are a thing though.

I’ll take a look, thank you, Mike
The window seat thing seriously takes points off. Glad you enjoyed it, pretty expensive but seemed quality.
It was quality, but a few niggles
That is not good to hear Sarah. I guess it all depends on who is operating the franchise on that particular day you visit.
A big portion of greens on top of the dish is Marco's style! He likes it😅
Thank you for the information
I have been to this branch. They overcharge and by far the worst restaurant I have been to in my life. They completely ignore allergy requests despite reminding them numerous times and are unapologetic. They also do no reply to feedback/complaints. Would never recommend.
😆😆
In Japan the chef will come out and bow until you are out of sight!
Yep. Was in Tokyo last year and after a nice Indian meal we payed and as we were leaving all the staff bowed and said goodbye ❤amazing.
So we all supposed to bow here now?🤣
What I find unacceptable.
