Marco Pierre White is a British chef, celebrity, restaurateur and television personality. He is noted for his contributions to contemporary British cuisine. White has been dubbed the first celebrity chef, and the enfant terrible of the UK restaurant scene. He was called the godfather of modern cooking by Australian MasterChef (Season 4, Episode 53). White was, at the time, the youngest chef ever to have been awarded three Michelin stars. He has trained chefs including Gordon Ramsay, Curtis Stone and Shannon Bennett.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus
"I came from a working class world, and my father told me at 13 to get a job", and in that moment he lost the entire Oxford University audience...
hahaha
Ain't that the truth.
Lol. You’d be surprised though. Sometimes, Ivy league Universities give full scholarships to prodigies from foreign countries who come from poor families. I’ve met many, and their stories and mindsets stand out from the rest of the usual ivy leaguers from upper-middle class or upper-class families.
@@gvs6462 can you elaborate pls? what traits stand out usually?
Not the ones who got there on talent alone. They know something about work.

He did poorly in school, is dyslexic, and still has better storytelling skills and wider vocabulary than most people.
I think that’s a big part of todays issues in the West. We have “educated” people telling young people they have all these problems and unfortunately for most, they believe it. You have boys with a tonne of energy drugged because they have “ADHD” when in reality that’s the natural state of kids and sitting in a classroom is unnatural. Yet they’ll hormonally change you to fit you roughly into their puzzle piece. Quite fascinating.
ADHD is more complex than what your idea of it is

He’s a legend storyteller
What worries me is that some of the audience do seem uninterested. There is a moment, as he's talking, when two girls are talking which just seemed rude to me. Oh well. He is fantastic.
This is a masterclass for everyone.

Wow, your powers of reason and thought are too strong to be wasted in the simple comment section when there are great legal issues that must be solved in our justice systems. GO GO for the good of the city!
This is a man whose entire life revolved around hard work.
Listening to this and hearing Marco say how he was ruled by fear of failure made me rethink my own life. Marco used his fear of failure in order to better himself and push past his mental and physical limits, whereas I let my fear of failure stop me from even trying to do anything. Definitely made me feel silly about getting nervous over starting a new job when back in Marco's day, he had less resources to work with than I do today, yet he kept going and found his way. 100% making a change in my life, what a legend. Thank you Marco Pierre White.

Marco's mind relives every moment. He can't just think "I" because when he visions .. he sees everyone who's been there along the way.
In different videos he has referred to it as “I” before. Change of view I suppose.
The man remembers everyone's names, and the colour of the door of his first job. This is a man who never forgot where he came from. Absolute legend.
almost like its rehearsed
@@cod4Rlp It probably is rehearsed, but he still has to remember all of that.

We tend to be very attentive in situations outside our comfort zone, so we remember those moments years later.
@@johanndaart7326 Great point! I hadn't really thought of that.
It's insane how consistent he is at telling his experiences. I watched 6 different interviews with him about his first time working and where he came from and he says it ALWAYS the same, not one detail different. He is the pinnacle of memory.
It’s more that this is a well rehearsed and well worn performance by him, and he can railroad some poor student interviewer with it. Other journalists have expressed frustration with how tiresome he is to interview because he just wants to stick to this well-worn working class bootstrap stuff. I’m surprised the adulation in the comment section here, but it shows the value of media-savviness i suppose.
I love Marco, but if someone retells the same story, exactly the same down to the very last details multiple times consistently, it means it is a well rehearsed story. If someone is speaking a true story from the heart there will be small details that are different every time, because that's simply how the human mind works. Unless of course you have written the story out and very well rehearsed and memorised it.
@@obi-wankenobi8446 It might feel like you're missing out but a spontaneous story might also leave out important bits which will leave you truly missing out. This is more like a sermon. Its meant to teach not entertain. You choose your words carefully and your rhythm is set to keep the listeners attention. I appreciate this style more.
@@edmooreCan you give some examples of the said journalists? Genuinely asking.
@@mihir66 oh, absolutely loads. one quick example from googling just now might be Rachel Cooke’s 2015 guardian interview with him, in which she even says how little the interviews with him have moved on. An excerpt: “Two decades on, has anything changed? No. He’s less inclined to hammy tantrums than of old, and he sounds posher, too. But in other ways, he has calcified. The cadences of his speech are more biblical-sounding than ever, his logic more elusive. He remains obsessed with his Italian-born mother, who died of a brain haemorrhage when he was six, and he is still prone to talking about his working-class roots, for all that it’s almost 40 years since he left his father’s house in Leeds”
He’s remembering, without notes, the exact dates when those crucial moments, meetings and interviews took place. Some 30+ years after. Just proving how meaningful they are to him.
if his chef career ever goes belly up, he could have a career in audiobooks
Just make sure he keeps water by his side. I hate mouth sounds.
@growlingbehemoth Hehe what? I'm talking about the sound his dry mouth makes occasionally.
@growlingbehemoth Nah brah its not annoying sounds. It's cerebral sounds and its called ASMR. I don't think anyone gets off to mouth noises, and if they do, more power to them.
@growlingbehemoth Hmm, I used to get it more when I was younger, listening to some music. But now im pretty much numb.
If it wasn't for him Gordon Ramsay wouldn't exist !!!
Everybody loves the tree but they never think of the roots that keep it alive !
Everybody loves a 8 bedroom 8 bathroom mansion. But they don't think the dirty hole in basement that keeps it up !
I accidentally hit on this and couldn't stop listening.
Same tbh
Ditto
This came up as a random hit on youtube and couldn't stop watching. Mr White is a far more complex character than the first impression of an arrogant, bad tempered blowhard. After watching this it's apparent he is a man more driven by passion for his work than anything else. I must say, he kinda grows on you and his passion for his job lifts the heart. Good on you Mr White.
He exudes a rare intensity. I had never heard his name, but I knew all the names of the chefs he mentioned. The pressure in the kitchen of a top tier restaurant is akin to the pressure in an ICU right now.
I love his voice and his attitude. I watched him on master chef Australia and he is a very kind man.
"he taught me, never throw in the towel... And if I did, he taught me to pick it up."
That resonates with me. Even when defeated and finally put down, you still get back up and keep fighting. My Dad was the definition of integrity and honor. He talked the talk but backed it up. Lots of nice people would give you the shirt off their backs.... He LITERALLY and figuratively did so numerous times with me witnessing it happen. And we did not have money growing up. My Dad gave me tools. Tools for life and tools for living. He was very very old school, too, like Marco's dad, but towards the latter 20 years of his life he became warm and no longer rough, extremely easy going and never yelled, NEVER. I have no idea how he learned to never raise his voice or fight with my Mom in his last 20 years of life, it was crazy to watch... But it showed me that two people could totally get along without constant headbutting until their demises lol
Its like youre talking about my father. A man of principle (literally wouldnt tell me his opinion on certain issues because he wanted me to be my own man with my own mind) and softened quite a bit the last 15 years or so, but he was a hard fella when I was growing up, and family has always been hus guiding value aboove all else besides maybe his faith. Im not a faithful man myself, but he respects that Im my own man with my own mind. Its a bit cliche, but they dont seem to make em' like that anymore.
Him: I hope I’m not boring you
Me: completely irritated that he stopped telling his story to make that statement lol
What an amazing story he is a true legend
He could read audio books if he wanted. He has a way of telling a story.

Too bad he didn't read his autobio, would've added that charm.. at least the version I've got
My exact same thoughts too. Do audio books have stars? 😄 But really he truly is a fantastic storyteller
"You're being judged by people who know less than you."
That one sentence hits so hard.
True but in order to be able to say that, you have to be at the very top. "Achieve your goal and only then you will be able to say if you want it or not"
If you say it while being at the bottom, it's likely a case of "sour grapes".
It's like this comment section here...
It's terrifying how stupid humans are 🤷🏼♂️
It makes me sad...
@@yackfou2412 both of the comments above yours are very insightful. You might be the famed sour grape
Yeah but they will claim you the ignorant one to feed their own ego.
@@acsiata I don't believe you do have to be at the very top to make that statement. Your statement assumes that those being criticized are at such a level that only those at the very pinnacle would be capable of such observations and I am here to tell you that is a faulty assumption. Another observation I would like to make to you is that most everything you see in culinary knowledge and skills, IS without question, the distilled knowledge of everyday people gained through thousands of years of experience. Not the elites.
I had the privilege of meeting Marco in 2017. I have always thought he has had intense and piercing eyes but meeting him face to face... my God.. his eyes hit you like a sledgehammer, looking deep into your soul.
He was such a down to earth, gracious and humble man to speak with and I was lucky enough to be able to thank him for what he did for the world of gastronomy and the inspiration he provided me, along with countless others I'm sure. An absolute legend and a wonderful human being.
Truly remarkable he is
I had the pleasure of meeting Marco Pierre-White at a charity do once. He was surprisingly down to earth and VERY funny.
I worked for him and it was a pleasure will never forget the experience
51:22 is a perfect demonstration of how down-to-earth this man is. He acknowledges the value in something like sustainable resourcing, but still emphasizes the importance of modern farming, something which is bashed by many others in positions similar to him. I really appreciate that take.
Incredible answer
I love how he remembers everybody’s full name - very respectful.
And here I am forgetting the names of even beautiful ladies. I suck at remembering names and it is so embarrasing that people call you by your name and you respond back with "hey"

And here I am not even knowing the first names of most of the people I work with
He also remembers the the dates, down to the day of the week. Some people have that ability.
This man told his life story without even thinking about it, that is absolutely mental
He has thought about it for a long time he has done this speech a few times which is why his stories are so well articulated and put together.
Yeah, he sounds like he's reading a book.
@@thomashunter460 indeed. a man with his drive and awareness, no doubt he's already planned his talk, irregardless of the questions. love every minute of it.

This man is the reason I'm a cook aspiring to be a chef. I love Gordon Ramsay, he's one of my idols, but this man is the *reason* I cook for a living. His understanding of food is unlike any chef in the world, and his work ethic is unmatched. He is truly a god among men in gastronomy.
I mean he helped Gordon to became the man he is today.
Good luck to you can't go wrong if you heed his advice 👍🏻

In the first 10 minutes of this talk I realized I was just a spoiled, whiney brat.

I felt quite... disappointed in myself
Im slowly starting to realize I was nothing more than a spoiled chef in the making. Ive always loved Marco even when I was more arrogant than anything. I cant wait to start my stages and begin the next stage of my journey.
life is live and learn people, learn from him
started working at 15, woke up at 5h30 everyday, did that for 2 years but it broke me, sometimes its not about how you're working, its more where and what you're doing, if you're not enjoying yourself a least a little bit, you might go crazy, my point is : don't be too severe with yourself
This talk from Marco was my inspiration to apply for a cook's position at a fine dining restaurant while I was a student in Germany. Like Marco, I emailed restaurants instead of knocking on their doors :) I did a trial with an Irish chef named Shane McMahon. I think he is more like Raven cuz he knows the light and the dark side of cooking :D
He could be Darth Jadus.
Darth Pierrus and Darth Ramseus
@Hil Flo I don't know if this is some high level sarcasm or if you don't get sarcasm or you dont know star wars.
"The lighter the weaker the darker the stronger" Marco Pierre 'Sith Lord' White
not many people can tell stories so beautifully. he's an international treasure.
I’m proud to be a chef 🙌🏻
I'm proud to have done (and still at times do) kitchen portering.
Pay’s shit :(
i'm proud to eat
Likewise brother, from SA🇿🇦
On him giving back his michelin stars:
"One day, a little thought just drifted into my mind. And that thought was; im being
judge by people who have less knowledge than me. So what is it all worth? Very little."
Absolutely brilliant!
BIG BLERK thats not him cooking tho its a mpw restaurant doesn’t mean its the same level has the 3 michelin star one was which he was there cooking and not for too many people etc etc
@BIG BLERK He escaped the Michelin Start game for a reason.... if you dont like the food , dont eat there again. Simple.
@BIG BLERK lmaooo. Bro don't lie to us alright. We understand that you don't like the chef to lie about a refund. Who the fuck goes to court over a refund. Please don't sound ridiculous.
@BIG BLERK sure sure. Make up whatever story you want, doesn't make it any more believable. Also no I'm not, just a regular guy with a nose for bullshit.
Hugo L at least read the reviews instead of going around claiming you know more about someone else’s experience than they do.
I love that Mr.White never utters "uh, and um" when he pauses. Truly a talented speaker as well.
Rightly stated...Exactly what struck me in the first few minutes.
he says um right after the bit about small chairs
no@HerrNilssonTheMonkey
Not too hard. Im currently in a public speech course. You can eliminate 80 percent of your uhs if you just think about it before hand and make a conscious note not to. I f you just pause instead, your overall speech seems more dramatic, which is a good thing.
Welp 10 seconds after he sits down alrighty then
Marco is exceptional. His ability to recount in so much detail and his deliver...wow. He should do audio books.
The man has a way to just hook you. From the moment he started his story, I couldn’t put the video down. He’s humble, yet serious, but in a way that just draws you in with sincerity. It’s truly amazing
He has a brilliant mind. His storytelling is impressive and intimidating in equal measure.
I found him to be very warm. He really wants young people to make the most of their lives, no matter what they do. He strikes me as a role model.
He does go the long way round tho!
I do think he's the most intense personality on the internet. And a damn great storyteller.
He's the greatest alive
@@adonaiyah2196 definitely a raconteur.
Not just stories, all true believe me
If by intense you mean narcissistic and full of himself, then you're right.
@@brotherwoodrow8355 go take a cold shower will you. When you have achieved a little fingernails worth of what Marco has then by all means come back and comment. In the meantime you are probably a looser so do one will you!
I'm glad he's been able to live a more sedate life than he did for so long. He worked so incredibly hard, and he certainly deserves it.
To think that he's asking if your bored.... Man I'd give my time just to hear him speak for more than 50 minutes. Great speaker for someone who wasn't good at school 🙏
This man’s life story is so compelling, if it were to be made into a film it could become an instant classic.
@killwill83 hod he betray him? I haven’t gone that deep into the story?
@@davidfebreeze428 framed marco and crashed his wedding uninvited with a camera crew
His life is being made into a film. Or at least it is in pre-production
I’m playing him! I’m an up and coming actor
@@heartyquaffer if that's true, i wish you all the best of luck and I look forward to it.
As soon as he started speaking he caught the attention of the whole audience. That man has a sheer amount of charisma.
Simple words. Complete (and short) sentences. This is how you convey instruction/information in a noisy kitchen.
1 hour video. Not a single moment of boredness. This man talks so calmly and rhythmically , it makes one forget all his tense.
You can take this advice for ANYTHING, not just cooking. I can watch this over and over.
His narratives are mind-boggingly interesting, for a man wtih a bad education, he speaks English exactly as a refined genius would!
i bet mr.marco used to think, contemplate a lot back in his early days, those resulting a great value from an extraordinary man like him.
Why would your accent have any bearing on your level of genius? You can be "refined" and have a regional, or god forbid NORTHERN accent, you realise?
He tells of an England that no longer exists. Wonderful.
He was like that when he was young. He obviously knows a great deal of French at this point. Not to mention the thousands of hours he worked in the nicest hotels and restaurants in the world around his time. You soak up and learn from your environment. He went into a whole new world, quite literally.
@Adam Search I’m Leeds and we sound thick up here , let’s face it .
The moment when you think to your self: " oh, i might click on this video about Marco Pierre White. Might be interesting. I´ll just dig in for a couple minutes" and end up watching the whole thing. The way he told his story kept me here haha. I liked it :)
That's exactly what happened to me! I figured I'd click in for a few minutes, maybe ten, and after 2 there was no way I could tear myself away. Brilliant.
Yup. That's what you call charisma.
It's my fourth watch in two or three years. Absolutely love it every time
This is what we call...SPECIAL!
i did the same
I would like to hear more stories of this man, he is an inspiration beyond words!
Marco worked so hard that luck bend to his will. Truly inspiring!
I absolutely adore the fact that he makes a point to ask their names before answering their questions. He demonstrates so much respect for those around him
I'm stealing a lot of tricks from this interview
That's something I've been trying to be better at. Making sure I know everyone's name, it just shows respect for people.
@@Whiteboykun if they're 'tricks', you're doing it wrong.
@@CurtisSpiers mr. life of the party over here
@@Whiteboykun Just thought you were missing the point is all, the whole reason he comes across so well is because he's just being himself.
There is something extremely impressive about Marco's ability to recall people's names, addresses, dates and specific details of events throughout his life. I don't even recall the date I first met the mrs!
MRK3LV I do 😁
Probably because Marco doesn’t regret the day he started at Boxtree whereas I bet you regr...oh.

I was latched on to every word he was saying. He has such a way with words and his story is inspiring. Truly inspiring man!
He's an absolutely fantastic speaker. How he answered the questions was simply great!
when marco speaks.... you listen... damn this man can tell a story!
True, I was glued to the screen for the first 24 minutes, I couldn't even get my eyes away from it, I listened to every word Marco said with full attention, I don't think I even blinked lmao.
+Nelson Azevedo I know!! lol. after watching this a have a new respect for him. I always thought he was a rich posh boy from down south, didnt realise he was from a working class background from leeds!?!! he now has my upmost respect.... 👌✌
nelsondx same
Fanboy.
What's wrong with being a rich posh boy?
never ask marco to tell a knock knock joke
Lmao
😂
Hahaha sounds about right !
KNOCK Knock....."Marco knocks on the table "....Pause....."Who's There?"....Marco pauses...."You know what....pause....He never wanted that door to open"
Knorr knorr
I watched this before and stumbled on it again. How can u pass it off. Excellent life advice. You really cant beat showing up at a door and asking
This man may be the Ultimate Chef, but his story telling is extraordinary. I was 10 when me and my 3 brothers, all older worked in my dad's boiler business. My dad's famous words til this day, do the job, do it right and get it done... May God bless you all.
Im not in the food business, but this guy nails being a man.

He's so manly, he scared the Kingfish away.

Utterly spellbinding, what a honour to hear Marco reveal himself so completely. Loved this talk. Amazing.
Man, he seems to remember every single thing in his entire life.

Because all those events he recalls here have burnt themselves into his soul like a white glowing branding iron into the hindquarters of a horse. This is survived pain recalling all the suffering.
He is like rainman
@@stayhappy8213 wtf hahahahah yup I agree with that..We don't have any lifr changing stories 😆😆
I'd watch a movie about the story of Marco.
IKR? he came from grass roots! what a story
Tom hardy
Young MPW was skinny. Tom Hardy would be too buff to play a young MPW.
To be honest, I think a movie would carry a fraction of the emotion and power that Marco presented here in this video
