It’s our first all-electric drag race and we’ve crossed the Atlantic to make sure we’ve found the best possible competition for you! Representing the UK we have the Jaguar I-Pace the firm's first all-electric SUV offering, the I-Pace, whilst we have two competitors from America - the Tesla Model X 100D and the P100D.
Why both? Well, the 100D is close on price and power to the Jaguar I-Pace, but why not have the most powerful Model X there too for comparison? So that's what we did!
We’ve put these electric SUVs to the test across three challenges - a drag race, rolling race and brake test, but which do you think will come out on top? Let’s race!

Matt/Carwow - for the brake tests please one time do a bunch of brake tests with the same car, so you can see what your margin of error is. You call winners in these tests, while they're likely just draws because the reaction time is more impactful than the brake performance.

That braking test is nonsense. Reaction time differences could easily account for the very small disparity in where the cars stopped.

A 30cm long breaking difference is not accurate at all considering that there s no real physical line but an approximate cone on the side, cars with different lengths, drivers with approximate approaching speeds and finally 3 different drivers who could never break at the exact same spot and moment. The drag race is the only test accurate, cause the human factor is not important, but the breaking test is as shitty as Donald trump!!

Yea it is weird. Like it's common knowledge that you can make an experiment more reliable by doing it over and over and taking the average of the results.
Electric cars may be an exception because of heat but it would make sense to at least do it with the petrol and diesel cars.
As a Tesla owner, two thoughts: 1) I'm delighted to see that Jaaaaag appears to be very serious about the I-Pace, and 2) there's now a legitimate option for those who can't quite go for the Tesla design language (beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that) or who want a cheaper option than the MX. Well done Jag.
The blue Tesla was so slow to start off the line in that first race. Driver was asleep or just us terrible reaction time. When your cars start that fast, waiting a second off the line kills you.

Omg, first time realizing that Tesla 100d and P100d have huge differences, I always thought P100d only adjusted some sport components, but now P100d was much faster the normal 100d ...........
The I-Pace is more off-roady while the Model X is more family-focused.
The Model X has more room while the I-Pace has off-road performance.
The Model X has the Tesla Supercharger available, while the I-Pace has to rely just on other public fast-chargers.
The Model X has autopilot while the I-Pace does not.
Conclusion:
These are two different types of SUVs focused on different types of people.
I wouldn`t even call the i-Pace an suv , it`s about the same size of a normal model S sedan
I-Pace can be had with adaptive cruise and lane keep assist which is 90% of what ‘autopilot’ offers. As you say though, the cars appeal to different people. What is good though is the Jag appeals more to people who perhaps don’t want the statement the Tesla makes....which means more people may be swayed by the idea of an electric car 👍🏻

Well it really boils to user preference, people migrating from ice cars may find jaguar as a more friendly option as they are acquainted with the brand. whereas tesla will be the choice of more performance oriented people, both cars do a good job, tesla might be a persons dream car but his budget might allow I-pace to be his/her daily steed.

There are 2 model x 100Ds, late last year they increased hp, this seems to be the old one... I know the model s 100d went from 4.2 down to 3.6 and the x should have dropped lower than 4.9, correct me if I'm wrong

100D is limited in low down performance, I have experienced it myself. the Jag is a good car, I don't like the looks and I don't like that they advertise against Tesla. They should advertise against fossil cars.

The company has yet to turn a profit, if not for the generosity of the loose obama green grant debacle they wouldn't have had the money to operate. How and why should they advertise against Fossil fuel cars when it is Electric vs Electric? For a company's first EV, it is pretty impressive how it is a serious competitor to Tesla, believe it or not. I am Tesla fanboy myself but man I am impressed with this Jag.

Comparing a minivan that can haul 7 ppl and lot's of cargo with a much smaller CUV is quite entertaining from the start. I-Pace is neither a direct competitor with Model X or Model S. Love that there are new EVs coming out and the CUV market is huge so Jag will sell a lot of those! For me personally I much prefer the Tesla and not so keen on the Jags look. Specifically not the front with the grill which I think looks strange.
The Model X comes as a 5 seater, with 6 seat and 7 seats as extra-cost options. Imo, it's quite valid to compare a 5 seat Model X with a 5 seat i-Pace.
The i-Pace also has the longest wheelbase, and has slightly more head and leg room for the front two rows of seats.
The I-Pace is much smaller than the Model X and is smaller than then Model S. It is closest in size, passenger and cargo room to the Model 3.
Just listen to that acceleration! Mind blowing.....

Curious, what settings did the 100D launch? I seem to get an extra edge with slipstart? Did you start from "brake assist" or just "no brake & no creep-mode"? Factors which imo are a game changer for the model X 100D (not the performance)...
It would make more sense to compare the I-pace to a ICE car that is of the same size. The Model X is a much larger SUV. The internal size of the I-pace is actually smaller then the Model S so that would be a better comparison if you wanted the clicks from going up against a Tesla, or for that matter Dual Motor Model 3 which is just a little smaller but quicker and 2/3 the cost of the I-pace.
To drag race a Tesla P-anything, you really need a hypercar or a heavily modified, probably boarder-line street-legal dragster.

Why? Because the much more expensive 100D lost?
The 100D has significantly better range, it's much bigger, and likely have more tech in it, that's why it's much more expensive. And it's not a sports car, customers won't switch to the I-Pace just because it's a little quicker.
The Model Y would be a better comparison, that will be about the same size and same price.
Being electric and in the SUV class are the only two things these two cars have in common. That's like having a race between a rhino and a lion just because they both have 4 legs and live in tropical climates. The Model S is much closer to the I-Pace in every aspect (apart from class and bodywork style) and is faster at the same price point. That's why this race doesn't really make sense, these cars are fundamentally different and don't even target the same audiences.
@carwow: should have clearly pointed out, that you are comparing cars from different classes. It’s like comparing Q5 with X5, or X3 with Q7. That changes the margings quite a bit and is usually therefore not performed. But, probably due to both beeing electric. Next time, please clearly state those facts.
Yeah, the Model X is a 7 passenger SUV with twice the cargo room, the I-Pace is smaller than a Model S, and is about the same size as a Model 3.

Where are you getting that? The i-Pace doesn't have an EPA rating yet, and the Teslas don't have a WLTP rating yet. It's pretty hard to compare them apples to apples atm.

No-one knows how their ranges compare directly. We do know that Jaguar are confident of bettering their most optimistic published estimate of their EPA rating. We know that the Jag's published realistic range "when driven like a Jag" is longer than the *EPA* range of some Xs.
You got to be kidding us Riggald, Jaguar posts the predicted EPA rating as 240 miles, are you seriously going to claim that they claimed officially a shorter range on their website because they were just being "conservative".

Disagree that back of the X looks bad especially when considering capacity. Form has to follow function. The X's trunk is 2100 L. That's with the third (!) row of seats are folded. Trunk of the I-Pace is 650 L. Clearly the X is designed for more capacity and the I-Pace to be more compact.

Patrik Nydensten that’s incorrect: the model X has a boot capacity of 2100 l is the third AND the second row are folded down. With only the third row down it’s boot space is more like 700 l.
I prefer Tesla because of Superchargers, Autopilot and OTA.
And Jag has CCS, TACC, lane-sensing , and lane-keep assist with self-steer. And OTA.

Liony Leftwich Jag fast charge up to 100 kw (Tesla 120 kw). The real problem is the lack of 100 kw chargers. Fast charging in Europe is mainly 50 kw right now.
Tesla has over 400 Supercharger in Europe.
Regarding OTA one thing is saying they are possible and another is actually do them frequently adding important new features and better driving assistant.

Those who own a Tesla can easily say at 1:20 that you didn't put foot on the pedal instantly (the 100D, middle car). Or Maybe you had a Chill mode enabled.
Now, they may or may not loose a race, but No Teslas (be at 3, X, or S) have such slow start, except when they are in Chill/Family mode.

Jag made a big deal about using a P100D then switched it out for a 100D. Deceptive advertising at it's best. The Jag will certainly be a great addition to the EV market and it's a beautiful and excellent performing car; just wish Jag was more truthful

I have an ipace and I can say that battery level changes the results. In that video ipace battery shows around 25 percentage. The results change if ipace battery fully loaded.
What "performance brakes" does he think the P100D Tesla has? Other than the red calipers, they're identical to those in the 100D!
Also, convenient that he lists the "starting price" for the Jag, but it very careful to use the actual price of the higher-trim Teslas to help feed the _"Teslas are expensive toys"_ myth. No "starting price" for them.
They both have options and yes there are lower trims of the Tesla's but that is the base model jag so he is accurate in his statement.

Peter Robann Sobrepena 240miles real world (300 wltp) and in the UK, Chargemaster/Polar and Ecotricity which at 9p/kWh is the equivalent of 264 full charges on a public DC charger for the £2000 most Tesla owners have paid up front for the use of the Supercharger network and just under half the cost per kWh of the payg charge of 20p/kWh you’ll pay in the UK for using the network outside the free credits...
