New Tangent Boxcars - I'm Not as Happy as I Should Be

- Another unboxing video! I received some 86 Foot Boxcars from Tangent Scale Models as a Birthday/Christmas present, so I tried to get them unboxed before my wife found out. That may not have worked. Watch with me as I break the seal and give you my first impressions of these massive cars. It's not as good as it could be. While I'm impressed with the level of detail, there were some other issues I found.

In O scale, these cars (Lionel makes them) have acquired the nickname "layout shrinkers". That distinction is well-earned 😂 (yet somehow, I managed to amass a dozen of 'em). Despite their size, Lionel managed to engineer them to negotiate what amounts to a 27" minimum radius using draft gear that telescopes as the couplers are pulled sideways. Nobody argues that their looks aren't compromised by going through such curves, but they will make it through, which is impressive by itself.
The way the manufacturers engineer things to allow these large cars to navigate such small radii is impressive. Looks are compromised, yes, but operations are sometimes (often? always?) more important than looks.
I like when you give a little history behind things.a little education while watching some nice product reviews
I like to understand why things happened on the railroad if possible, since it helps ground things in reality. So I pass on what I know when I can.
@@ThePixelDepotLLC well I thank you for that. You’ve changed my outlook on a few things since getting into train modelling and part of that is dropping those history tidbits and dreaming more interest out of me. Keep the great job up!
These are impressive auto parts boxcars, I own 2 examples of these from Western Pacific and L&N and I have to say, these cars are well detailed & roll along the tracks nicely, Tom.
They recently came out with the 8 door version, which is what GM, which I model, preferred. So I had to get a couple more. Even with the nits I picked out in this video, you're right, they're very good models.
You described the difference between “Cubing out” and “Maxing out” a boxcar.
nice vid... tangent makes good looking cars... i even noticed they added a ultra fine bleeder rod, they left no stone unturned on these cars
They look lovely. I saw some at a show recently for $53.99 and was curious what the msrp was.
I’m definitely one of those you mentioned who feel this is outside my price range. If I had a shelf layout and a small fleet I’d definitely use them. But in my circumstances I’d settle for 5 or 6 Athearn BBs at the same price for 1 Tangent. I don’t want to be spending $5,000 on 86’ cubes, or any other single car type. Great review though.
I have a mix of Tangents, Walthers, and Athearn BB on the layout. Once weathered, you don't notice the difference unless you're really paying attention.
I noticed the splotches as well on my CR ex PRR car on different locations compared to your car. I was able to get rid of them by buffing those areas gently with a soft cloth. Nice review of the cars!
I’ve heard this from a number of others. But yes, it does seem to be an easy cleanup.
@@ThePixelDepotLLC Those splotches look like some kind of oil got on the cars. Glad it was an easy clean up. Seeing this video reminds me of my childhood growing up near The CNW Northwest Line which was heavy with auto traffic to and from Janesville Wi
Hello, these cars have a SUGGESTED minimum radius of 24". But what is the REAL minimum radius? For example: The even bigger 89' Autoracks from Walthers also have a recommended minimum radius of 24", but they run even through 18" without issues.
Can anybody tell me? Thanks...
Unfortunately, I can't tell you, I don't have any curves that tight on the layout.
Nice review on these cars ! Btw, Any thoughts about min radius for these 86' cars? Message on the front box cover states 24" suggested min radius? That will cause poor performance and look ridiculously toy
like, especially on a main line. For prototype appearance these cars will look best on a min 60"
radius, thats just my take on this.
Thanks! They will run on the 24” radius but as you say they won’t look great. I would say minimum 30” to look even half passable.
This is the very reason I built the Cambridge Iron & Metal building the way I did. (ua-cam.com/video/fa2zHeNojLk/v-deo.html)
They look great! I noticed the splotches right off. It's really odd that the screws off the b&o car were in the conrail container. Either way, this is my .02 pesos... this cements that paying for high end stuff and getting damage/flaws/loose parts is reason to shy away from this stuff. I get it, we want it to be as close to realistic as possible. But, at what cost? For me, I'm happy with the blue box 89 footers. Swap out wheels and couplers and slight weathering. Good to go.
But yeah.... this was a great review. 👍 look forward to more.
If you watch closely, when I tipped the B&O car over the screws fell out into the Conrail box. I didn’t notice it myself until I was editing the video. But yes, the detail parts can be a mixed blessing. I’m a bit bipolar on it. On the one hand is “good enough” and sometimes on the other hand it’s “I can only get this car type at the high end”. So I go back and forth.
That said, I have a number of Tangent cars of different styles and this was the first one I’ve ever really had an issue with.
@@ThePixelDepotLLC I didn't catch that. I was imagining the odds of screws for one car in another box. I said "he better go get a lotto ticket!" I hear ya though. There's gonna be a oops every here n there with mass production. I have very few big brand cars and less engines in the fleet. I think im just a little hard headed when it comes to that. 🤣
@@houseofrandomness yeah, the odds would have been infinitesimal!
Do you have a way to get cars out of the GM building in case there's a derailment or they just won't couple up?
Sure do! The room panels are all removable.
The center door boxcars were dedicated to Ford plants, if I’m not mistaken.
Ford and Chrysler preferred the two door (per side) variant; GM the four door. But the four door ones are harder to find. So I make do.
OH NO..... Now he can't run them on his layout! Ha Ha Ha....
Newer Subscriber here so I'm not sure if anyone else advised you that the screws in the Red Conrail box "arrived" as you turned the blue, Featured Model" upside-down... the screws fell from the "Blue" box into the "Red" box. They were probably used to secure the weight in the Blue box car.
Thanks! Shortly after I posted this I did have a flash of insight and figured it out. But thanks for looking out for me! 🙂 And welcome! I appreciate the subscription!
my comment is about weathering the new cars. At 53.00 plus, to me it is like guys who don't weather there locos in fear of messing up a 200.00 + sound loco. You weathered the roofs on the blue box and the other but I am sure you did not have to pay as much. You did not say about the weight are they in specs? Thanks for sharing!
I will weather these cars as I get time. To me an unweathered car doesn’t look quite right (regardless of how much it cost) but lately I haven’t had the time to do much weathering. I will have to check on the weights and I will post it here when I can. But thank you for mentioning that. I’ll add it to my list of things to cover when I do this type of video. Thanks for watching!
Will, I was going through comments prepping for a new video and realized I never answered your question about specs. These weight in at 8.1 ounces, and are just shy of 12". So they are about 1.25 ounces heaver than the NMRA RP. Sorry for the delay!
I have a lot of these with oil spots on the sides as well , kinda BS considering the price
Great looking boxcars, but a little hard to get here.
Where are you located?
@@ThePixelDepotLLC I’m located in Germany
Good review! Tangent did a really beautiful job on these cars; but the price point…ouch!!!
Yep. Not cheap.
Compare the price for the amount of detail and compare it to other manufacturers and its definitely worth the money.
Unboxing boxcars... 😂
There is bit of an infinite loop there, huh?
"Not as happy as I should be", in my opinion, is a little unfair to Tangent, as most boxes get tossed and thrown around like a football, unfortunately!
Perhaps, but the oily “stuff” on the car was a downer. And from other comments I’ve gotten, that was common on the PRR cars. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Tangent cars and will continue to buy them, but at the price point you don’t expect to have to do work on them when they arrive.
@@ThePixelDepotLLC I've seen oily stuff on UP and SP cars as well. Yup, a downer!
Love the video but you might want to take your address off the box or cover it before opening it on camera. Don’t worry I won’t send anything or share it just trying to help
Thank you, I appreciate that. But the address shown is the local UPS/USPS Hub. My address is covered. 🙂
