I model railroaded in HO scale for more than 50 years. There were trains for every budget. Engines ran for decades on a little grease and oil and maybe a new set of brushes every 10 years. No Bells no whistles no sound and most especially no command control. I remember when decc first came out everybody thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread no more wiring. But foremost modular if you had space for 4 by 8 you really didn't need DCCC. For a new Model Railroader nowadays I would recommend for them to buy used equipment at train shows. You don't need all the bells and whistles and any gauge in order to enjoy it.
I have enjoyed the models that have been passed down to me as well as from my neighbor who has since past. I have a switching layout in mind while I go to trade school.
I'm perfectly happy with straight DC/analog HO scale model locomotives. I can do without the bells/whistles/noise and complication of DCC equipment..but that's me. Good buys out there for new DC only model locomotives and if you have a DC only layout you can find great buys on used DC only equipment.
I wanted a couple of Norfolk Southern GP-38-2's so I stripped down two old Tyco GP-38-2's and painted them black and got me a couple sets of decals and applied them along with a couple of plows that NS uses on their locos. Came out really good. I am a DC only guy and have been running DC trains since the mid 80's. I model the Central of Georgia and am building up my rolling stock for that fallen flag road. I love finding old Mantua Pacific's (4-6-2) to fix up. I start by repainting them black for the CofG and change out the magnets on those open frame (Pittman) motors with neodymium (rare earth) magnets. It makes a HUGE difference in current draw and now they "creep" around the tracks. Cheers from a 73 year old ex-Georgian modeler in eastern TN
I HAVE THAT MODEL!! It pulls like a beast! I have added DCC to mine and it pulls 18 cars with no problems!! Glad to see you have NS 1446! To fix those horns take a dap of glue and let it dry for a little while. No need to swap it out.
Walthers should be paying you for this video. I’m very impressed with this model. I’ve been looking for a new loco to compliment my 30+ pre owned units and will make a purchase asap. 👍🏼👍🏼
It's NS so the back up lights are the front. Norfolk and Western and Southern always ran cab rear with their Geeps. They said it was for crew safety until the modern safety cabs came along. Most know it was because they never quite could give up on steam.
You hole Layout is just great .... So, I need you to come over and do mine lol. Just kidding :)!!! Take care. Ps I mint to tell you the Locomotive that you are running I do have the same one :). Take care!!!
I kind of went nuts on my HO train empire lately! LOL. Finally put together a 8x4 layout, bought two Athearn DCC sound loco's and an Atlas DCC sound loco. That is a addition two a few older Athearn DC loco's both from the older Iron horse train sets. I have also bought a few older blue box Athearn's to gut to use as dummy engines. I have been modeling the old 90's Chessie System/L&N(Seaboard) CSX era. Once you get into it it's hard to stop!
That's Awesome! I have a small Facebook page. I would love it if you joined and posted some pics! facebook.com/groups/vintagerr/?ref=share&mibextid=7Qny2v
It is refreshing to see your videos showing that model railroads do not have to be so complicated. My favorite locomotives are second generation since I am child of the 70’s . The 4 best locomotives I have were $20 apiece because the packages were smoke damaged. They all run perfectly!
Model railroading can be expensive and complex, but it doesn't have to be. 2md Gen locomotives are nice. I'm a big fan of the Alco Century series, specifically the C430 and C628.
Thanks for this video. I think I am going to get one of these from Gaugemaster as they sell American model trains in the UK. I appreciate the thorough test.
I just got the Conrail version for my shelf train. The engine is very quiet, and I literally run it for hours at a time. Have had it about a month and it has been running a lot. I figure it will needs lube with gear oil every three or four months(?). I am very happy with this engine!
They are good solid running locomotive and very easy to maintain. If only running occasionally you only need to maintain every 6 to 12 months. However if you're running it very frequently every 90 days is good.
I Got 11 locomotives like brand new, For Only $250. All with Perfect Cabooses ! 2 with spot Light's Quit Running! , At my local flea market !! ,And 2 transformers $6.00 Each , I'm happy 😁
There are definitely some advantages to not having a bunch of separately applied detail. That's why I'm a big fan of Walthers Mainline. Good quality mechanism that runs and pulls great but not a ton of detail to get broken off.
Bought the Walthers Trainline Emd GP9M Standard DC United States Army #4628 off of amazon a few months ago, runs great, thinking of adding a dcc controller to it.
Those are solid runners as well. I have 4. Two came with promotional train sets and two I picked up used for $15 each. I should get a new on to review.
Gee i remember getting 8; undecorated when they first came out, a bunch of DA and DW parts and made CNW....before that i made 2 smokey valley GP15s....
@@VintageRoadRail It has became a thing with me when I buy a locomotive off Ebay, I always look for key fall off item when unpacking them. Horns, Couplers, Handrails, Number Boards, MU hoses, Etc. The main fall off items!
Nice locomotives, durability is my only real concern. I would put the horns on . I really like this 4x8 layout and I usually don’t like a “train board”.
I'm still fairly new myself. Been in the hobby a little over 3 years. That layout is an old layout that I purchased. It's roughly about 50 years old and 8 ft long by 4 ft wide. If you have the space for a 4x8 layout there are lots of track plans you can go with. You can go bigger or smaller obviously if you need to.
Hi Nice video. Just getting started. Thinking of purchasing a Lionel Union Pacific Chief Flyer HO setup for $210.00. Any suggestions or comments. I just want a basic system to run and show my kids who are 6 and 4. I like the Kato N system but too expensive (and small), but I want something decent. It's something I will probably run for a 2 months year and keep it boxed until Dece or June. Thank you in advance for your thoughts
I'm not familiar with that set. I tried looking it up but just came up with the O gauge version. As long as it gets good reviews it should be ok to run around the holidays, just make sure and store it in a climate controlled area and in it's box if possible. Bachmann makes an HO scale Christmas themed set that you might also want to check out, assuming you are running at Christmas time.
Are all your rolling stock up to NMRA weight standards? I also see you don't have any grades to pull. I doubt you'd pull 20 cars up a 2% grade. Another note: when you have over 80 pieces of rolling stock and want to change to all metal wheel sets and body mounted Kaydee couplers, plan on dropping a couple hundred dollars and more to achieve this task. While I was at it, I weathered every piece of rolling stock as I worked on the wheels and couplers. After all real trains have metal wheels and I've never seen a pair of talgo trucks on a real train. I hate talgo trucks and always cut those couplers off and use body mounted Kaydee couplers. I've got a three Atlas engines that came with those damn McHenry plastic couplers that automatically get tossed into the trash can. Cheers - eastern TN

The worst thing are SOUND decoders. They complicate the installation and they don't really sound like real trains.

It's a great running locomotive for sure. I have 3 of them. CSX, NS and BNSF. All are solid runners.
Great video . Can’t go wrong with the vintage HBO intro music. Keep up the good work !
Beautiful Presentation 🎉

I would place a thin pieces of plexiglass around your layout to avoid a train going off the track unto the floor .
Love this layout 👍

I actually prefer the bodies to not be super detailed. As long as they run smooth and can pull a lot I am 100% happy.

Keep that old layout some how! As always great video!
I'll try. Issue is I can't keep it at the club forever, won't fit in my basement and no place to store it. 😥
Nice set .
Those little Walthers buggies ya can't go wrong, really🚂🇨🇦🇺🇲🚃🚃🚃🙋

I have a Walthers GP7 NY Central
I agree. Too many cars for certain layout sizes does look silly. It's nice to see what these budget locos could handle tho.
I got the Conrail Locomotive straight from Amazon and the horn was broken off of it too.
I guess those horns are just fragile.

Just purchased one from The Train Station near Columbus.
Lol, that's where I got this one.
Great video. Just glad it's wasn't a vinyl chloride NS train. J/k

Hahaha I have that same dinner table in my train room nice to know theres others 👍

Luv theme music. ABC Afternoon Mantinea or night show?
Close. ABC Sunday night movie special.
Metal frame or plastic frame. Metal Trucks or plastic trucks?
Metal frame. Not sure on the trucks, didn't pay attention to them. But I would guess plastic.
this loomotive has flywheels ? ill consider making a purchase,
I know for sure it has one flywheel. I'll try to remember to check the diagram tomorrow.
I checked and it does have dual flywheels.
