I would guess that the one variant with the riveted panels was an attempt by Thrall to eliminate the "oil canning" ripples in the side sheets. They likely found that the expense and added weight were not warranted or valued enough by their customers!
Question about the "indents". Perhaps Thrall had the contractors build only the 'flat' sides (where all the rivets/welds are) and built the "indent" portions themselves? I am wondering if those 'indents' were square tube frames. If that is the case, perhaps the sheeting is welded/riveted on the inside of the car? As for the 'ripples', I think that may come from the metal coming in rolls of specified widths? Probably more efficient to order rolls of steel than sheets that would have to be cut.
The Maxi-Cube x-IC cars were Washington Central, not Wisconsin Central. I'd check the build dates on those, they may have been designed for a roofwalk but delivered without. ??? Overall, neat video!
