  • There are lots of different reasons that people enjoy model railroading. For me one of the things I enjoy most is model train operations--specifically switching operations. This video covers the third trick on Wednesday, July 11, 1984. This is my fourth formal operating session on the Monument City Terminal Division, and the first to cover the third trick schedule. So there are still some scheduling issues to work out, some minor layout gremlins to discover, and we all make a whole bunch of mistakes, myself included.
Model trains in action! Watch to see how it turns out!

Hey, guys! Just found your channel, or it just found me!
You know what I mean! I couldn’t help but notice the
TP&W box car on your layout!
I’m a former employee of the
    original TP&W before the Santa
Fe buyout. I remember those cars well! There were 100 of them in the 70,000 series. The
agency I trained in had a feed mill named Honegger & Co.
    They loaded bagged A&P Feed
in those cars. Those were plain
Jane box cars. There were 50
more in the 70100 series with
    EOC cushioning. They also had
some old 40’ box cars they used until those came along.
These were XP type 40’ cars
with an epoxy lining to keep from tearing the bags. They were put in m of w service when the new 50’ cars arrived.

I lived in Fells Point/Canton near Boston St for 12 years and drove under all of those bridges you have pictures of every day, brings back memories. I model Cheesie as well, in N Scale, and am starting my 4 layout, biggest yet. I appreciate all your videos, keep up the good work! Loved your 895/95 bridge video, part of daily to work before moving away from a once amazing city and home to my family…hon

@@ThePixelDepotLLC I was there from 2007-2019, so definitely not a Chessie or B&O era. My two most prevalent memories are of crossing under the Eastern Ave bridge with the Baltimore mural and taking the “shortcuts” around traffic under the 95/895 bridges off Boston St. Love seeing that you’re tackling Charm City, my grandfather worked at Sparrows Point for Beth Steel, I’ll be visiting him in two weeks in fact and I’ll see if I can find some pictures that may help you

It seems that if you have the magnets on the layout, they eventually are never in the right places when you get all of the buildings in place. Also, some things are always setting on one magnet and when you pull away, half of your train stays solidly in place. "Stick with them", ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!! I also like to remove the arms off of the bottom of the couplers. Looks better. Or you could have a "magnetic" personality... Even if you use a stick to uncouple, you still can use the delayed action of the KD couplers to be able to push the cars to their positions and then just pull away. Nice edit when you picked up the caboose with the auto rack cars, bet you had to "help" it with a "hand from heaven"... Really --- nice video...

So I just recently subscribed to your channel. I have picked up alot of good ideas from your videos. The only thing I see that makes me think hmmm, is where on the east end the road goes into the backdrop building. I was thinking you might ba Abel to put a shipping bay for semi trucks there to make it look like a usable place rather than just backdrop.

Welcome, Peter! I'm glad you're liking he videos. A number of people have commented on that intersection. It's very noticeable in the videos, because of the closeup shots. But it is always hard to hide a perpendicular seam. I'm considering putting a small construction scene at the end to try and hide the transition.

I love watching your videos. I also model the Chessie System, but set in 1975. I haven't had a layout in almost 20 years and got out of the hobby for a while. I've since returned and I am in the process of collecting equipment again and looking forward to building a shelf layout. keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. Thanks.

@@ThePixelDepotLLC I originally was going to model the C&O mainline through Ashland, KY. I grew up there and moved away to go to college in 1981. Then I got the idea to model my own railroad which I called the Ohio Valley. When I got back in the hobby I decided to do the best of both. I used real history such as the C&O being part of the Newport News and Mississippi Valley to come up with a proto freelance idea. The NN&MV was broken up in the 1880s and the C&O and SP became independent. IRL the line from Louisville to Memphis became part of the IC along with 2 smaller railroads that connected to the SP in New Orleans. My idea was to take the NN&MV and say that it stayed independent and it kept the 2 lines into New Orleans and expanded from there up along the Mississippi valley to St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago and Detroit along with keeping the mainline to Ashland KY and expanding into eastern KY. The NN&MV stayed independent until the 1930s when the C&O bought controlling interest in it. In 1949 the C&O exerted more control over the railway but kept it independent. The NN&MV adopted the C&O's paint scheme in 1950 and became part of the Chessie System in 1972. Their locomotives were numbered in a common system with the C&O.
The main reason I did this was I like Alcos, so I had the NN&MV dieselize with with Alcos and FMs only. The first EMDs were bought in the late 50s, some SD9s and a few SD24s. During the 60s the NN&MV continued to purchase Alcos until they left the market. But as the 60s wore on, they started buying more EMDs and GEs. In 1975 the roster is still almost 70% Alco, and most of the FMs are gone. The area I want to model it part of the mainline from Chicago to ST. Louis. Flat land with high speed mainline and a few commuters.

    Thanks in advance.

    • @ThePixelDepotLLC
      @ThePixelDepotLLC  Рік тому +1

I think this is the part: Depending on union rules, railroads often had to deliver cars, but return empty. As in, Railroad 1 delivers cars to RR2 for that road, but they can't take anything back from RR2. RR2 instead has to deliver cars to RR1. If that's not sounding like what I was talking about, let me know!

That building (H. P. Callaghan Welding Supply) is named for my father-in-law and has been on two layouts. I initially built it for a club layout that has since been dismantled. And it has found a home here on the MCTD. In both cases the building was not rail-served but used purely for scenic purposes. I hope that answers the question, but if it wasn’t what you intended, let me know.
