- An in-depth guide to the Star Citizen in-game camera system or "Advanced Camera Controls". I go into great detail on all the camera options & controls including Depth of Field (DOF), Field of View (FOV), Offsets, Zoom & Freelook while referencing real-world photography terms & techniques & pointing out restrictions & oddities along the way. This is meant to be a definitive guide on the entire camera system.

Ok, how can I give more than ONE thumb up??? Thank you, good Sir... you are legend!
Thanks!!
Nice tutorial, when they ask: how to control the camera, I will drop the link to this video))
Thanks!!
Fingers crossed for more content from you!
Well... the screenshots are always flowing. But videos have been on the back burner for a while for various reason. I/we have several planned... and hopefully we'll have time to start working on them again.
@@Hasgaha after a million years once CIG implements cloud tech and crusader, I'll really look forward to your video on those!
Person who has unbelievable skills “I don’t claim to be an expert”. Dude, you are a SC camera god! ... so yeah, you’re correct, I didn’t use the word “expert” either 😎 Thank you very much for these guides, literally every single thing I know about the camera controls in SC I learned from you.
Awww, thanks. I'm glad you found my tutorials helpful!!
Been waiting for this!
This is amazing! I am going to give you credit in all my new videos to come. This changes everything.

This is great! Especially usefull for in-ship cameras, docking, landing, or flanks. So thank you.
Glad it was helpful! And yes, I always have 3 cameras saved for every ship to help me land and check loading ramps: top down, from the front, from the back.
Man this is so well done, the quality & effort is just amazing. Big thank you for doing this.
Edit: I had the missile camera activate today while playing in the PU, its switched to the missile cam for a sec but i let go of the button(was in the middle of a fight). I'll have to try it again, but i think it is working again.(patch 3.9 - current PU)
Thanks!
Diabolus told me that he also got the missile camera to work today in the 3.10 PTU. Oh well... at least I explained how it SHOULD work when it does work. It's entirely possible it breaks again in the next patch.

@@Hasgaha You're welcome ^^
Sometimes using those camera, i have my finger placed in very tricky way. Likepress F4 while pressing z while imturning around something while zoming outor zooming in. Great tuto, i was already using those but i clicked thinking there was a secret key to lock the camera like in the early days of arena comander. In that time there was a way to lock the camera in a position and you could take shots of your ship rotating without the camera rotating with it. Or the shot we need now to make with other ppl to see a ship fly by the steady cam back then we were able to do it alone while locking the camera.
I do remember that camera function in Arena Commander... very useful at times. Unfortunately, it was removed from the camera system a long time ago
Thanks for the vid and info! The selfie FOIP is used by a number of content creators to give a more personal narrative, immersing the host and viewer into the content.
Very well done tutorial ! Excellent breakdown and step by step instruction of the camera systems capabilities, functions, and limitations. Great work 👍
Thank you... I'm glad you liked it
I used the camera controls today for the first time after watching your tutorial. The screen shots turned out great! Thank you for that.. What program do you use to avoid compression as an alternative to the in-game print screen?
Sorry for the delayed response. I'm glad my tutorial helped you. I use ReShade to capture my screenshots which allows you to save the images as JPG, PNG or BMP. PNG is the nice happy medium because it's still compressed to save space but a lossless compression. And even if you don't plan on taking advantage of the ReShade shaders, you can still use it to simply capture screenshots.
Great guide! Thank you, this is very usefull. Was looking to make better screenshots.
Thank you for this!
Thanks DG. It's long but hopefully people find it helpful.

That was a fantastic explanation of how to use the ACC. I had no idea it is so versatile. That 30 min vidio must have taken many hours to make. Your narration was clear and perfectly synced to what was going on, on screen. Your use of the keyboard keys graphic made it so much easier to understand. I loved the 'retro celluloid effect' you placed on the missile cam, I imagined you blowing away dust from the silver film can when you found it in an old box 😃 - great touch. Thanks for sharing Mr Hasgaha, another new sub here. 5⭐'s
Sorry for the delayed reply but I very much appreciate the comments! Yes, this one took months of planning and work and I always like when people notice the small details (vintage missile camera footage) that help keep me entertained while editing it all together.
@@Hasgaha Better late than never 😎
@@Hasgaha Better late than never, it's nice you got back to me 👍😊
19:59 got me good.
hahaha.
Awesome-sauce as usual @Mr. Hasgaha. I referenced your old video to help me put together my gamepad setup; this is a great update. I was able to fit all the adv. cam controls in (using the Xbox Elite controller)
Another quirk I noticed: when you recall a saved camera view, the camera is in freelook mode, which is pretty annoying. Also missile view actually works for me in 3.9.1 and 3.10.
Nice!
And yes, my Freelook video covers that freelook oddity. It's a pain when you're not expecting to be in freelook.
Others have also mentioned that missile camera is working for them... but I and others can't get it to work. So I don't know what's going on there. But that's why I still covered it... just in case.
F4 + * is all i needed i luv u
Awesome!
Thank you
Thx!!
Thanks!
You're welcome 😀
I'd also add that you can capture amazing highly detailed 5k-8k screenshots using NVIDIA DSR 4x setting.
Since that's not part of the Star Citizen camera system, I didn't cover in this video. But I did discuss it in a separate video about image quality.
Anyone else use a tenkeyless and feel left sad? Great video. Very well made and the execution is absolutely fantastic. Thank you Mr. Hasgaha!
Thanks... glad you liked it. And yes... I've often wondered how people playing a sim with LOTS of bindings do so without a numpad keyboard. I ALWAYS have a numpad keyboard... partly for games, but also just because I use it a lot.
Mr. Hasgaha This is my first tenkeyless and what a bad time to get one hey? Might just have to add a separate pad somehow
Ah. Well, yes, a separate keypad is definitely an option. I even have one... a macro button/pad thingy for my LEFT hand with more specific macro bindings. But you can certainly use one as a "numpad" or even buy a standalone USB numpad keypad.
i like to to think of depth of field controls as aperture even though its not changing exposure. game simulates an eye ball so its doing exposure automatically. f1.2 is going to have less in focus compared to f22 as im sure you know. In game with some depth of field applied changing the lens or field of view also exaggerates the depth of field which also mimics changing lenses on a camera and setting the same aperture. one day i hope cig adds an even more advanced camera that can add roll controls so we dont have to crop screenshots to get vertical shots while on the ground instead of being limited to rotating a ship 90 degrees. that along with better quality blurr for depth of field and ability to focus on things outside the camera movement cube.
Thank you.
so good
Thanks
Good stuff
I appreciate it
Thanks Man. I hate that the Head looks around but the view ist straight, after using the Free Look. Never saw the Reste with F4 and *
Thanks
You are welcome
the selfie is good for voice attack. When I say startup my ship starts up....opens bay doors...then does a 1 second selfie to make sure I got my helmut on. :)
Hahah! Nice
Nice !!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!
you can also rebind the ACC from F4 to other keys, I use the Numpad Period which in my case make things easier as I can use only one hand to activate controls
nice classic touch with the foip smile and sound effect in the M50.
Foip selfie seems to be usable for streamers and other YT'ers. Would be nicer if the whole face were in the camera.
I'm glad someone noticed the ding-smile :)
I agree, the FOIP framing is a bit tight and could be pushed back a little while still having the same feel.
Very useful video, thanks for the info!
AFAIK the Cinematic camera was working for me at least back in 3.8 (though I don't think it's ever been perfect and sometimes gives/gave very odd camera views); I'm honestly not sure if I tried tracking in 3.9, but, will maybe try it again in 3.9.1.
Thanks! Yes, some people have said that the "Cinematic Camera" or missile camera IS working for them... and not for others. I still can't get it to work in 3.9 or 3.10 and I have no idea why.
@@Hasgaha I'd guess maybe it's been disabled whilst they work on it (or something else), given the Alpha state there's several things that "could" be causing issues with the camera switch. Tbh they could really do with making it a separate key bind so it doesn't freak out the new players!
The best
Thanks

Thx for producing this comprehensive tutorial. Any way to remove the walk bobbing for smooth video while walking?
Unfortunately, there is no way to remove the camera motion that walking/running causes. Crouching or crawling while prone might give you smoother results.
Hi!
Your video quality is great. Do you happen to have your setup posted anywhere? The hardware, software, recording and encoding settings you use? I've been trying to figure it out and I just can't get quality like this, even though I have a good rig. I don't know what I'm doing with the settings and the quality you're putting out is what I'm looking to do.
Anything you can share about your settings would be most useful.
Cheers!
From experience, I know there is no easy combination of hardware and software that will work for everyone. All I can do is tell you what I'm running currently.

I generally record Star Citizen footage with NVIDIA's Shadowplay because it has provided the smoothest, highest quality footage with my current system. But for tutorials like this where I have a live overlay, I'm using OBS Studio so that I can record multiple inputs (game, keypad display, etc). Regardless of the software, I record in the highest bitrate my system can handle... and that takes lots of testing. I place HIGH value on smooth footage and high resolutions and clean playback. That means VERY large file sizes. And even when you think you've nailed down your settings, the software updates or the GPU drivers update, and you have to reconfigure it all again.
If you're serious about recording smooth, high quality game footage, you should learn about bitrates and codecs and encoding methods. KNOWING how all that effects output helps you troubleshoot your own unique system.
I hope that helps at least a little
Really like your videos and I'm wondering with which software you record game videos? I'd like try making video and the quality is always failed.
Hi great video
I have one mor question
is it possible to bind all f4 actions to a gamepad (for example xbox controller)
and if yes how because in game it sems like that isn’t possible
thank you for this nice video and have a nice day
How did you do this camera movement ? @30:28 . It's moving smoothly and steady. Are you walking with the character when you're recording that?
Great video, but I didn't see you mention anything about vehicle rolling without the camera orientation following the vehicle roll.. is there an option or Cam control that we can set, something like a spectator view.
No, unfortunately, we can't do that. The camera is always attached to your character or vehicle movements.
Is there a way to control the camera movement ? Like for cinematics we need a smooth camera movements
Congrats on being featured on This Week in Star Citizen! Great video, superb motion graphics, with all the "exhausting" details this camera enthusiast wanted. Might I ask, what did you use for the live keystroke display?
robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/citizens/17693-This-Week-In-Star-Citizen
Thank you... I noticed the MVP! Very exciting.
The keystroke overlay is a small program I found a 3-4 years ago called "NohBoard". I liked NohBoard when I found it because it was simple and customizable. When I need to record a video with the keystroke overlay, I use OBS so that I can further tweak the keyboard's appearance and position. It's worked well for me.
@@Hasgaha Oh cool, thanks will check out NohBoard
Small question: im often using foip, but my head is not moving when i move it iin front of the camera. Is there a new option to activate to make the cam track head movement plus the mouth or maybe its a bug?
There is an option that enables and disables "head look" or something like that independent of facial expressions. I can't look at the game right now, but I know it's a button I have as a hotkey but I don't remember if I added it or if it is there by default. For me, enabling/disabling the FOIP headlook is done with the NUMPAD / key
Is there any Replay (recordings/playback) mods to use this with? I make (used to) cinematic gameplay vis on my channel and would love to make some really nice star citizen ones
No in-game options and modding isn't really possible at the moment. So, recordings are all handled the external program of your choice: OBS, ShadowPlay, etc.
At time stamp 19:50 you inform us that we can have "9 completely independent saved presets for each of our ships". But what is this command to load the saved camera profiles for each ship? At present I can only use one set of 9 presets for my Titan Avenger, but for the MSR - a much bigger ship - requires me to make another set of presets for it (because my camera setups are in different positions for each ship because of the ship size differences) meaning I lose the 9 saved views for my smaller Titan ship when I have to set up the camera views for the MSR. So, would I have to make a backup copy of the "savedviews.xml" file, i.e have one setup named "savedviews-titan.xml" another named "savedviews-MSR.xml", moreover, when I switch between those ships in-game, would I have to overwrite the default XML file each time with the respective custom file I'd made for those ships?
Well, something must have changed? ;-)
I saved (I thought) a starboard side rear view (F4+1) and a port side rear view (F4+3), but when I clicked F4+1 (at same time), nothing happened.
When I taped F4+3 (same time) the view went to the port side rear view, then tap (F4+1) it returns to 1st person (inside cabin)
I suspect, if I created a third view (F4+__), the second view would be gone?
I'm trying to create a "Landing View" looking down. I'm guessing if I created one for a Freelancer, it would be useless on a P-52 Merlin (extreme example)?
If you don't use the print screen from within SC then what do you use to catch a screen shot?
I use ReShade's built in screenshot function. ReShade is a real-time, in-game injector that allows you to tweak the look of the game.
Which hangar is the white and grey with orange lines? I dont think ive come across that one yet
Hmm... not sure. What is the rough timestamp on the video?
Does the ACC allow for tilting of the camera, as to say, taking Vertical Shots as opposed to the more traditional Horizontal shots?
Nope.... it's something we've been asking for since the beginning. Maybe someday
@@Hasgaha That's unfortunate. I honestly don't know why some games neglect that most important and basic feature in their "photomode". If the game has been out for as long as it has and the devs still have not implemented it into their game, I'm not holding my breath that they'll add it. It just offers so much more creative freedom. Anyways, thanks for the confirmation, sir. 🙂
Agreed
I wish there was a "You Tuber" who utilized a gamepad, would post as does those who don't use a gamepad. I'd concur that SC is first and foremost a game that is designed to be played with KB and Mouse. And that the addition of Hotas and or Gamepads support was added to apease us that utilize them. The issue I have using a game pad is how I can manage to enter into a photo mode somehow, perhaps through a glitch, but then can't get back to normal gamepad configurations. The only work around and it doesn't always work is to get out of the seat, and if possible leave the immediate area and then return to the seat.
I wish that when one chooses the game pad or hotas configuratiions, it would compelelly by pass the keyboard and mouse. Accidently utilizing either while playing with a gamepad or hotas, causes issues with said devices. Perhaps in the fulture, they segragate them, but for now, it is what it is. ALPHA!
I fly 100% with a gamepad. I used a heavily modified version of the original CIG "legacy" gamempad profile. For me, entering in the the advanced camera controls (3PV) is by pressing the modifier button and clicking in the right stick. I can then freely move the camera around with the right stick, and it also makes landing decoupled VERY easy.
@William Guy Thilgen Jr.
You can check my YT page, I actually play SC 100% with a gamepad with a very streamlined and intuitive setup that avoids confusion, and it has full Adv. Cam and kiosk/mobi support. Fair warning: It does require using an Xbox Elite controller (for the extra button inputs) and remapping software (to remapp M/KB commands to some buttons), but if you get both you can just download my configs for easy importing. And I use it to take my screenshots which have been featured in showcases alongside Hasgaha's. t's well worth checking out. Good luck whatever you decide to do though, I've been in your shoes b4.

Just wondering, for the save and load hot keys is it possible to do that without a numpad?
Sorry... I missed this comment. And YES, you can change the SAVE/LOAD keybinds:
1) When in game, press the ESCAPE key to get to the menu.
2) Go to OPTIONS > KEYBINDS > ADVANDCED CONTROLS CUSTOMIZATION
3) Make sure KEYBOARD/MOUSE is selected in the bottom right (or which ever device you want to bind).
4) Scroll to the bottom of the keybinds list to find: CAMERA - ADVANCED CAMERA CONTROLS
5) Click on it to expand those keybinds.
6) You'll now want to rebind the "Save View 1" and "Load View 1" to a new key. Double click on the entry to start the rebind process. Then press the single key (without F4) that you want to use.
Keep in mind, F4 will be required to use these keys even though you do NOT specify it in the keybind. You'll also need to repeat this process for all the SAVE/LOAD keybinds you want to change.
Good luck... and good luck finding keys that don't already have a purpose ;)
@@Hasgaha Thank you very much! Even though your reply is a bit late and I got myself a keyboard that has a numpad in that time lol, it’s still useful to know how to change binds and whatnot.
@@rudstar64 DOH! Sorry again. BUUUUT... Star Citizen has soooo many keybinds, I can't imagine playing without the extra keys the NUMPAD provides. I think you're better off now.
@@Hasgaha yeah it definitely helps
nice tutorial, but in my opinion the DOF buttons kind of work like an aperture.
Is it possible to lock my camera to my head purposfully? I'm attempting to make a tactical helmet cam. Also, is it possible to make my camera stay in one spot while my character moves?
No to both of those unfortunately. The CHARACTER camera is anchored to your torso. So, the camera will see your head bobbing around rather than being attached to the head. And the camera can NEVER be detached from the character/vehicle.
@@Hasgaha Oof, thanks.
@@mohamed-amenyussuf1185 Yeah, sorry. If you want the camera "detached", you need one player be the camera and the other be the actor.
I'm trying to get rid over that zoom in effect that happens when dog fighting. The more intense the fight goes the more the camera zooms in to a point I can't see 2 of the ships display screens.
It is finished. At last. haha
all these depth of blurs and what not looks better and are easier in Davinci or Premiere
