This is why I love this channel. It's so easy to judge a book by its cover, but if you just look at the effort put into it, it's definitely got admirable aspects to it. I have a newfound respect for these historical trash fires
yeah, it took 7 months to work up to that 10 inch turd. A lot of work went into making that turd. Had to eat a lot of fattening food. Had to keep packing all that food into my mouth even if I was bloated like a manatee. Lot of food to stuff me up for a while. Some drugs to help with the constipation so it could all build up. Lots of work, man.
@@Jaykilljoy-tt9tt just imagine how it would have turned out if someone had cut your funding and you hadn't been able to afford all that food and you didn't have access to the drugs and after all that someone compared it to a turd made by someone with better access to the food and drugs and a larger rectum than you...
If you ever need more content made by someone very passionate about films I would suggest FilmJoy. He doesn't do as much behind the scenes stuff and he has a flashier style (he used to work in gaming) but his stuff is great.
@@clintmcbride7830 Of course I was being semi serious. Half joking.
Cecil this is dope work... makes me hype for future projects like these
Thanks! I have at least 2 more lined up for the future! :)
@@GoodBadFlicks Any chance you'd dabble in the Action Max?? Pops Ghostly!
@@GoodBadFlicks awesome!!! Best channel ever
Agreed
Agreed. Excellent video.
I think the most impressive thing is that people are STILL making Morshu say funny things despite the fact that he only has two lines.
And it still bring people joy 😆
Morshu shows more personality in 23 seconds than the official Zelda characters in 34 years.
I enjoy the change in direction from just films. Great job! Reminds me of the Gaming Historian whom I love to watch.
Gotta mix it up once in a while :)
Link: "Well excuuuuse me, Cecil!"
Steve Martin?
Sort of, it's from the animated Zelda series that ran with the Super Mario cartoon series.
You win the Internet
That was from the cartoon not the CDI games
Lol, I forgot about the only thing to survive the Saturday morning cartoon.
I'm surprised you people didn't know the reference. Although, remembering that goofy cartoon isn't exactly something to be proud of, LOL!
I don't think I have ever seen a gaming console sold via late night and weekday afternoon infomercials. I can actually admit to wanting to play these dumpster fires of video games.
Wired controller or no the controls are awful. The hit detection is awful. You cannot seriously defend the controls after trying to jump on one of the second layer platforms as big as Link, only to repeatedly fall through.
4:51 - Also, Yellics suicide came out of nowhere to me. The way you talked about it sounds like he did it because of not being good at making video games.
This is something I could definitely get behind. So many bad games in existence....
Check out What Happened? by Matt McMuscles. It's basically a bunch of BTS documentaries about some of the worst games in history.
@@grahamkristensen9301 Matt's WH? videos are great, but his usual style introduces a lot of snark, and while that works for something like Big Rigs or Postal III, it sometimes underplays other historical points. What Cecil did here is exactly the kind of gaming history I love to see, right up there with Gaming Historian's videos. Nothing but pure recounting of history, with some earnest personal feelings, and I'm really looking forward to what Cecil covers next.
I like GBF doing this content too...I'm all for him branching out
This is why I come to you for game history. Often not many critics I have seen don't go deep into the game's history. Let alone talk about the people involved. Please keep up the great work.
Thank you!
@@GoodBadFlicks Thank you for creating great content.
Some of the best effort of any youtube channel. Well done sir.
I just want to say to everyone who plays games. Remember if you hate a game or disappointed by one, it's okay to mad at corporate or supervisor, but the low level ground team is likely doing the best with what they got. Always keep that in mind.
Kind of like the Military if you think about it, the people (soldiers) on the ground are usually the victims compared to the guys in top brass with the corporate stooges!
I love that you go into such detail with the history of everything you cover. Most people who cover these particular games give the briefest history synopsis just to make " ha, bad game is bad jokes" keep ot up Cecil. This is why you are one of the all time best content creators on YT.
Thank you so much!
@@GoodBadFlicks No. Thank YOU.
Really enjoyed this. Had no idea of the history.
Yes😍 Thank you cecil for bringing back Good Bad Games. Looking forward to seeing more of this series.
My wife and I worked for Phillips Headquarters in Knoxville TN and ended up getting two of those systems because they kept giving the games as prizes for different employee events. That was right at the end of their life. I remember we had Forest Gump as our only movie on the system.
"... I'll put a Link down there in the description."
Nice ending line!!!
I really missed your video-game videos. I'm glad you are returning to them.
:)
please keep making content like this, I'm always impressed how much fun and how educational these videos are. Great job, much love!
Thanks!
Out of all the zelda cdi coverage that's been made. This is by far my favorite. thank you.
Thanks!
“The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Breaker”
...no, that can’t be right...
It’s not true. That’s impossible
@@quinnzykir Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
@@fredskull1618 NNOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I'm really glad you took such a fair approach to covering these. I've seen so many "oh my god look at this trash ugh" videos over the years about these games and while nobody is calling them masterworks, it cheapens how fascinating this whole project was. I remember reading a good article on Hardcore Gaming 101 back in the day that gave me perspective on what the team pulled off in a situation that wasn't ideal. I think if it had better controls with a system that could process it better, it would actually be a decent play. Also the background art and music is memorable, plus the animated sequences of course are legendary even if it wasn't the intended effect.
The work they put in these is crazy and I wanted to highlight that because it seems to be the thing that no one ever really discussed.
I was just watching the AVGN episode on these games yesterday.
I know what I'm watchin next...
Now THIS is a very pleasant surprise
Those Brøderbund guys also invested in a risky game called Myst at one point. I wonder if that ever got off the ground...?
The quote by Dale Desharone, makes a great tag-line for the channel. "Every game has its story, not just the story of the game, but a story of what the situation was in terms of how it was built..." When I watch this channel, I get to learn about both the story of a movie I've never seen, and also the story of how the movie came to be, and of the people who made it happen. I enjoy the blend, keep up the good work!
Awww! I like the voice acting. Specially the wizard guy in the flying carpet.
I know of these games because of Guru Larry’s Retro Corner segment back on xleague. Also, YTP was a huge part of bringing the CDI games to the internet’s attention.
I am so stoked that you applied your excellent research skills and super professional presentation style to the insane world of video game development. I've been in the video game industry for the past 7 years and I think you brought up some really interesting facts that other channels who cover this kind of stuff don't even mention. I hope you enjoyed making this video and will make others like it!
Thanks! This was fun to do. It was a nice change of pace but took a long time to put together.
2:27 I used to play Below the Root on my classroom's Apple II back in the mid-80s... wow nostalgic memories 😊
Phillips is the kid in the group project that has ideas but kindly doesn’t want to interrupt their loud classmates in the group, having them basically take over
Having played these in addition to the rest of the Zelda series, I can honestly say I enjoy these more than some of the official titles. I really appreciate style and atmosphere.
You put a lot of effort into your videos, and it shows. This is easily the best coverage of these notorious CDi games out there. Excellent stuff Sir.
Thank you!
Wonderful episode. It's so sad that so many behind the scenes stories get left untold when a piece of media underperforms. But all the people involved are trying to make the best thing they can to the best of their abilities. I'm so glad you have a platform to spotlight these stories.
Thanks!
What a great video. It's nice to see someone actually get the background on these games and show respect to the creators.
Thanks!
You'd think a fella named Cecil would be making videos about Final Fantasy IV.
It is my favorite FF game :)
for perspective, this would be like trying to play Doom on your 20 year old DVD player.. since they have about the same gaming capabilities lol
I did get some enjoyment out of the CDI back then. "Inca" & "Alice In Wonderland" had been my two favourite games on the platform. But it was not until the PS1 and N64 had turned until I felt like a new good consistent quality milestone of gaming had turned up. (Nes Manga)
This was awesome! It's great to see you branching out to gaming content. I've played the first two CD-i Zelda games, but having a non-functioning Timekeeper in my CD-i is why I've never finished them. Hopefully I can do so one day.
That's one of the reasons why not a whole lot of people played these games. If the high price of these CD-i consoles isn't enough of a turn off, then the timekeeper battery will be.
I did happen to know a guy who owned the system and the three games. I didn't like the side-scrollers, but I sort of digged Zelda's Adventure.
It could be interesting to see you branch out from movies in a series like this.
1:04 That was my very first computer! Got it at a flea market for a hundred bucks in 1985 or so. Had a tape drive that took half an hour to save a 1k program!. What a long road its been to get to computers now.
Someone remastered these games, they run on PC and have a few QOL changes. They're now gone from the official source but I'm sure they can be downloaded from somewhere. You know, once something hits the internet, it can't easily be erased.
Night Trap should definitely be your next game history review, Cecil. :)
Well this was an unexpected dose of awesome.
This is an amazing explanation of the CD-i! I love Good Bad Games!
Also, 9:56 - Great recontextualization of The Matrix.
Thanks!
Do a story on Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. The story behind the company and the game is really great, not to mention the game is considered one of the best PC games of all time!
Best review of cdi zelda ever so detailed
Great video! I corresponded a bit with Tony Trippy. He said that he wrote all the music for two games for two months. This is damn fast!
Thanks! Wow, that was fast. Although not surprising, the score is usually the last thing on both movies and games.
I'm always excited when you do a goodbadgames. Thank u.
Thanks for watching!
Love these longer videos and this one was really fun and informative.
I'm old enough to have seen the full progression of video games and have played on pretty much every system from the late 70's forward and having just purchased a ps5 can say it's amazing how far we've come from the days of Pong and the Magnavox Odyssey
Might be my new favorite video you've done. Very interesting and different take on these games, with the historical impact taken into account too.
Thanks!
Wow this was something else, I've always heard about how bad the games were never about all the heart and effort that went into them. Great research and thank you for crediting your researchers and the artists at the end.
Thanks!
Look...i love your channel, and i haven't seen a bad video yet by you. But this one is now my new favorite, i love the CD-i Zelda games! It was so nice to get an honest review of 2 truly underappreciated games. AVGN can't compete with this review!
Thanks! At first I thought this comment was going in another direction :)
@@GoodBadFlicks omg no way!! I could never diss you my dude! Thank you so much for all the hard work you do! Stay blessed and keep em coming.
Dude, this video is fantastic. As much as I love your exploring series for films, this exploring video on video games is too notch and a welcome change. I hope that you will be able to do a few more of these inbetween your normal normal film schedule.
Thank you! I have 2 more game videos lined up for some time in 2021. :)
@@GoodBadFlicks Brilliant! I am looking forward to them :D
Ive heard this story numerous times.. Though this time I learnt a few new details. Thanks for the great work Cecil!
Thanks!
I never expected to see you making a video about this of all things and I really liked it but can you tell me the names of the two animated films that are shown at 11:52
Prometheus and the Snow Maiden. Really beautiful animation
Again fantastic work Cecil. Dude is always crushing it. My favorite UA-cam channel. Although Cart Narcs is a close second.
Back in the day I was interested in the CD-i. So when an IT project in school came along I wrote to Philips about it. They were nice enough to send me a pack with marketing and technical info in it.
Cheers Philips, got me a B, don't regret not picking up the CD-i though! LOL
5:57 bloody hell that image of Beverly Hills, 90210... Such a band of misfits XD I cannot believe I had a crush on Donna and Andrea (Tori Spelling and Gabrielle Carteris). What an absolute nightmare. Btw loving the new format Cecil, great job!
I was all about Jenny Garth
Oh, hey! I know those games!
I love all your videos, this one came out as good as the rest. I wish you could do Exploring Tetris
The amount of work and research you do is astounding.
Thank you! I started working on this in January!
Dude. I watched all your videos about exploring so called "b-movies". This is your next step. You are perfect for exploring bad or troubled games. Best Idea ever. As a person working in the film industry but also beeing a huge "bad" video-games nerd, i can´t stress enough of how good this sort of videos would fit your channel and my personal interests. Thank you for that and I haven´t even watched that video. I will save it for tomorrow morning. And i will love it :-) Thx Cecil. PS: I recommend your videos to everyone all the time. (sorry for some mistakes, as an austrian, english is not my first language)
Thank you! I have 2 more game videos lined up for some time in 2021. :)
Mt elementary school was rebuilt around 92/93, mainly from the asbestos used in its production - they even had a person come explain why it was bad to breath in asbestos dust in a simplified way (the particles are hooked shape and will get stuck in you air sacs, something like that). But they had built an amazing media center (it replaced our old library, but it still had books) with all the classrooms being connected to it, and they had CDi's and VCRs, Laser disc players in there, and the teacher would call them on a phone that we also had in every room and ask them to play whatever it was and they would send it over however it was hooked (up Im not sure if it was networked or if it was just splitters and long S-Videos/RCAs)to your exact room (every room had a TV mounted in the top corner). We also had a small cluster of Macs that were pretty good for the time, sometimes the pod of 4/5 Macs were shared between 2 rooms but a lot of the older kids 4th/5th graders had a pod in each of our classrooms. I mean this was a huge step up from the past schools and tech they had, the AV cart was top of the line for the old school. Mind you this is in Hammond, Indiana which is literally sandwiched inbetween Gary, IN (the old murder cap until New Orleans took that titles for a while) and Chicago. It wasnt like we were in some super affluent town. It sucked cuz I only had 1 full year there before middle school (we also had an almost half year when I was in 4th grade) and that middle/high school was pretty shitty. It didnt have anything but a few (older) Macs in the library, and the old AV carts with a TV and a VCR. It also had no air conditioning. The glue from the ceiling tiles would become unglued cuz of the heat and humidity in the begging of the school year and toward the end of it as well. Several students and staff got hit in the head from these titles falling down from the like 12/15 foot ceiling and it knocked a few them out.
One year MTV came there after a girl got suspended for having dyed hair...the school said it was "disruptive to the learning environment". I guess it being 110 degrees F was fine, and of course they didnt have fans running often cuz then you couldnt hear the teacher. That was fine. The dyed hair stuff was ridiculous. It may of caused 10-15 mins of people being interested in it over the course of 1 day, but their lil hissy fits the admins threw bad sure it was a big deal. The kids now that go to the schools in my city have to wear a uniform (which is just khakis, and a red, white, or navy blue polo shirt) and the high schoolers dont get off campus lunch.
My friend this is one of the best Exploring videos I ever seen, I'm looking forward to watch more videos like this, Congratulations are in order! GO CECIL!!!
Thank you so much!
This pairs well with AVGNs episodes on the CDi! Branching out to games with this series is something I wholeheartedly support.
Wow!! That was really cool and informative!! James Rolfe's take was funny but watching this gave me an appreciation of the work that went into these titles. Hopefully you do more of these, they are as interesting as your exploration of "cheesy" movies.
Thank you!
Coincidentally, a single fan recently released remakes of both CD-i games for free on PC, MAC & Linux. Rather than finding a working CD-i or emulating them, I say check those versions out as they have many modern enhancements & quality of life improvements that make them more pleasant experiences.
I never even knew you made this video! Only found out through twitter today. It's a great one, for sure one of my favourites about this game and from the channel!
Thanks! Yeah, UA-cam buried it for some reason. Really bummed me out because I worked insanely hard on it. Glad you found it and enjoyed :)
I'm always so happy to see the way your videos highlight the real love and passion put into work like this, even if it doesn't always come out how it was intended. It brings me real joy to be reminded of that, and the creativity still out there in underrated titles, especially in times like these. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
very interesting and well done documentary about these two infamous games
Thanks!
Thanks for this entry Cecil! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was really well done!
Thanks!
I've heard so much about this game, probably spent hours hearing about it, but everything here was fresh and new. Excellent work, I hope you'll consider tackling a few other infamous games as well as your movies.
I can honestly say no one has had a positive opinion of the game, but you actually were able to find a positive spin of the game.
This is a cool spin on the exploring series! Thanks for another good one!
This was a very good watch! Looking forward to seeing you expand into game reviews!
YES! Good Bad Games is back!
It's so awesome hearing you talk about Atari 800 games on your channel. I actually just inherited a lot of computer games and Battle of Shiloh and Normandy were both in the lot, along with two rare APX (Atari Program Exchange) titles.
I've been waiting for you to cover video games for so long!! I know you announced you were going to.. but I'm stoked to see this now
:)
Great insight into the story about this amazing and beautiful disaster which is often forgotten in the midst of console crazyness of the 90s. Amazing video!
I really enjoyed this video. I learned a lot and appreciate you expanding your topics!
Thanks!
I can get behind these videos. Awesome job dude
Thanks!
Since you're such a big fan of post apocalyptic fiction you should explore the Fallout series someday.
Excellent work! Im a recent fan and have been having a great time watching your old content as well
In the small chance that you read this amongst all your other comments from your fans. I love your videos, been a sub for years. I've watched all your videos multiple times. Some days I'll watch a GBF marathon. I can't wait for my Good Bad Flicks copy of In Search of Darkness II. You introduced me to so so many movies and relit my love for 80's cinema. Thank you for everything you do with this channel. This channel has been great for my mental health, when things get dark and I get knocked down, I know I can turn to your channel to pick me back up. Merry Christman, Happy Holidays, and God Bless!
Thank you for watching! Also, thank you for supporting the ISOD doc. We put a lot into them and I hope you enjoy them. Merry Christmas to you as well, here's to a better 2021 :)
I've been well aware of the janky reputation of these games, but this exploration really made me appreciate them in a new light. Great work, as usual.
Is it weird that I am visualizing Phillips, Nintendo, Sony as people. And I personally picture Nintendo as that sleazy playboy who cheats on Sony with Phillips and they get into a fight leading into an extremely messy divorce/breakup?
Now you're doing video game exploring!? Dude, THANK YOU! I hope to see more video game exploring content! Either way, your content is good no matter what it is! Keep it up! :)
Thanks!
It's refreshing to see a positive critique of these games. Most people don't put themselves in the creators shoes and understand the difficulties of game development.
I like that you really went into the development because I've never heard a single thing about these games other than their quality! Great fucking video man holy shit.
Okay, now I understand what actually made those games the way they are. At least they seem like interesting pieces of art now and aren't just a total joke. Makes me appreciate them more.
This might be the best video on this topic I've seen so far. Thanks a lot, GoodBadFlicks! :-)
greetings from germany
Oh man, this was a fantastic video! I love how in-depth your videos on movies are, so I'm excited that you'll be doing these for video games now!
Thanks! I wanted to mix it up a little to keep things interesting :)
This! Please, more of this!
GOOD BAD GAMES FINALLY RETURNS!
River City Ransom...
That’s it, that’s the comment.
Fantastic work as always, Cecil!
Thank you!
Love seeing you expand into other content territories. Whatever you feel like making videos about, i'm in.
This was great!
Reakly fascinating getting this perspective. I'd love to get more like this...
Thanks! I have a few more lined up for next year
Interesting stuff. I'd like to see more of this type of content. Good Bad Games are everywhere.
I have 2 lined up so far for 2021
@@GoodBadFlicks Excellent.
Philips... the company of bad decisions. That's why they're almost dead now... (saying this as ex-Philips employee)
Dead? What? LOL
For bad decisions, it's hard to beat Sega, which was managed for a while by someone who was purposely sabotaging them and helping its competitors. Or Sony, a tech giant that sunk everything into its Playstation division while misleading its shareholders about it until about 2010, and ended up as a much smaller and broker company by the end.
If your an x employee like myself. You may remember changing their slogan from “let’s make things better” to “let’s make better things.” as a joke.
Loving the positivity of this video! ❤️
Thanks!
Your channel and content is simply amazing. I can easily get stuck for hours watching your videos. The amount of information and detail you pack in is awesome. You are on a whole other level. 👏🏽👍🏽😃✌🏽
Amazing work as always! Here's to a new year and even more great content!
