Movies, games, and the occasional editorial.
From A-Z list films, video games, and other overlooked goodness. - Розваги
Lance Henrikson is probably the most underrated actor from the 80s and 90s. He is in so many good movies and always gives great performances. Even when he is in bad movies, his performances elevate the quality of the overall film. Call me crazy, but I think he deserved an Oscar nod for "Near Dark".
He's awesome. I met him a few years back and he was so cool. Really interesting guy to chat with and a total gentleman. You should check out his book, he talks a lot about how he goes about acting. Essentially, he always gives 100% even if he knows the movie isn't the best. A total professional.
Speaking of underrated, Pumpkinhead is a surprisingly good movie, all thanks to his presence in it.
I agree, and I’d like to add Gary Oldman to that list. He’s done more “dignified” work overall, since he’s not a genre actor, but he’s done some real stinkers in horror and comedy. Brought the talent and professionalism, then did no promotions and made offhand comments like “haven’t seen it, heard it wasn’t good. I’m enjoying my boat though.” (Commenting the unborn)
He most definitely are! He is almost never loud or in your face in the movies he plays, his acting is just so good that he can create great things from a role that doesnt require much. One of my favorite characters he plays is in Millennium. I love that series and the heart he brings to it.
Fully understood the tone in your voice when you mentioned his passing . Hope each day has been better than the last for ya Cecil.
I think he was a great director Sadly nobody didn't understand his full potential
@@luisthekingjaime94 so they all understood...?
@@Bale4Bond that kind of thing bothers me too lmao.
Sincerely, I really do appreciate you putting the suicide prevention numbers in at the end.
i'm so sorry to hear about the director. suicidal thoughts are no joke- thank you for putting the support info at the end.
when you're going through it, it's easy to think you're all alone- but there's lots of folks who care and want to help.❤
I rented this for 10 weekends straight at blockbuster, by far the best thing about parents divorcing is how they let you rent anything during those proceedings.
That is one hella admirable way to find the 'silver lining' in a difficult situation 👌
I was always down with the "2 Christmases" schtick, but when my dad's child support payments stopped that shit got bad real quick
absolutely, its a blessing in the long run if we've learned from their mistakes. im a better man cuz of it.
Haha. Same boat, parents got divorced in 93 when I was in third grade. Awesome time for watching movies. I think I watched the whole full moon library as well, they had the best vhs cover art.
I totally rented this at my dad's place and at my mom's place around the same time weird coincidence
"The Horror Show is another story."
That's okay, dude.
*I can wait.*
Great work as always.
I disagree, I can't wait, & I truly hope that there is an exploring episode of The Horror Show, coming up, in the near future.
The moment when the dog climbs the tree and eats the cats freaked me out as a kid.
wstine79 I saw this movie as an adult and it still does
Me too 😁
He eats like a on gulp hot dog.
Same. I refuse to ever watch this movie ever again because of that scene. I hate when animals, especially cats, are killed or hurt in movies.
I felt the same way in my late teens. I had a very nice cat that looked a lot like that one when I first saw this film; it was like watching my dear pet get eaten
I did not know Lance had such standards for his roles. Learned something new.
You’re the man, Cecil. As the video was ending, I was planning on commenting, “well, there’s my bummer for the day”- but your message at the end really turned it around to becoming my uplifting moment of the day. Right on.
You are not alone man. Stay strong.
Speaking as someone who lost their best friend to suicide some 20+ years ago - there is ALWAYS someone out there who cares. Not a day goes by that I don't think about the experiences my friend has missed out on in life. The old saying "Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" is the truest statement ever.
Didn't know that about Henrikson, major props to the guy for those rules. But also, Near Dark? He's a goddamn psychopath in that!
Can't say for Near Dark because I can't find the movie anywhere!
I'll plop the $50 for a copy off ebay someday. 😒
I feel like even in Near Dark, Lance Henrickson could justify his actions as taking care of a family that he picked, that he wanted. Bill Paxton as Sever though, he was truly a monster with no compassion.
@@JohnnyBurnes I guess I got lucky back in 2005, I got it from Columbia House, the two disc special edition with a ton of extras (lost it actually, along with most of my other things). Sad to hear that copies of it have dried up; good luck in your future search.
Suicide is the worst. Imagine being in so much pain that the only escape is to end your life. At least he leaves behind a legacy that people can enjoy for years to come. Rest in peace, Mr. Lafia
A guilty pleasure!! They referenced this movie on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, where a robot babysitter makes Meatwad's life a living hell, and in their dialogue, where Meatwad says the" dog was a robot, the guy was a robot and it had Lance Henriksen in it." Shake says, "yeah, what is that? Let's name it that." Lol!
I thought it was pretty good during a time when horror movies weren't doing so great.
As a psychologist and someone who deals with depression myself I truly appreciate your open and honest approach to the matter of mental health. Small gestures like these really make a difference. Thanks, Cecil.
No problem. Depression is a beast that even I have fallen victim to. I know a simple thing like hearing that someone cares can really make a difference.
Thank you for your message at the end. That was much appreciated.
Thank you for not sensationalizing or speculating about his suicide, as others wouldn’t be so kind and respectful. I’ve lost several friends to suicide in the past few years. All were pillars in the music community and left behind an incredible legacy to remember them by, but the pain has never really subsided. You can never tell by looking at someone what battles they’re fighting. Thank you for including that last part. Your tone sounded as though you’ve had to endure something just as painful before. Thank you for all the effort you put into these videos too. I’ve probably quoted more facts I’ve learned from you about movies than I have any behind the scenes featurette or director’s commentary.
Stick tight Y’all
Simply put, you have class. The posting of the suicide prevention line was very heartfelt and respectful.
I've heard about this movie years ago, but never gave it the chance it deserved. Now I will. Sounds very interesting!
Rest in peace to John Lafia. Thanks for delivering us this film and writing Child's Play!
13:11, lol!! RIP, John Witherspoon.
Thanks for including the end message.
This movie is truly a hidden gem. A Super puppy Frankenstein who's the ultimate best friend. It's sad what happened to the director because he really did a great job. RIP.😍😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This was a great underrated film.
I love Ally Sheedy and it's always fun to discover her overlooked movies.
One of my favorite movies from my childhood. RIP John
The dog killing the mail man was in Friday! Hell yeah, Cecil!
"Jaws with Paws."
And with that, I'm grabbing me coat.😂
Always wanted a mastef after seeing this as a kid, wanted a dog bigger than anyone. Max made Alley Sheedy look like a child in size. Must love Max forever. You should explore The Horror Show next! Keep up the great work Cecil, love the newerish intro too. Great job as always 🙏
Amazingly well done as always! Thank you for the time and effort
^ This. 👏
Thanks for this video. I enjoyed this movie in theaters. It sucks when anyone goes out like that. Glad that you have that message at the end. People need to know that, to quote the film The Jacket, "No matter how bad things look, they look better awake than they do asleep." That quote got me through some dark days.
Thank you Cecil!! These videos aren't just entertainment, I feel like I'm sitting with a friend who knows so much about movies.
I may be going out on a limb here, but I think this movie is where Disney got the idea for Lilo and Stitch. Both are about genetically engineered creatures designed as living weapons by an amoral scientist, both are mistaken for regular dogs, and despite their bad behavior they are redeemed by the power of love.
I really needed that quote at the end. I've been struggling a lot lately. I miss my kids so much and some days are unbearable. You are a great, kind man and I'm proud to call myself a fan.
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate having you as a fan. Whatever you are going through, I hope it gets better. Life, even when it is its most difficult, is always worth living.
@@GoodBadFlicks Thanks again, brother. Your videos are a fantastic resource of information as well as a great distraction from the crazy thing called life. I'll keep fighting no matter how hard things get.
I remember seeing this film as a VHS rental and, being a dog lover, I felt bad about what happened to Max. Glad to know that was the director's intention. Lance Henriksen always makes a film better, regardless of his role. Thanks Cecil for another great episode.
Dogs, The Terminator, and Frankenstein? “C.H.O.M.P.S., Order 66!”
Joking aside, this looks really cool. I’ll check it out. Thanks for the video.
"Yes, my Lord."
@@wstine79 "C.H.O.M.P.S." was one of my favorites as a kid!
How about "Rottweiler", which features a cyborg dog, even a terminator-esque reveal
Major Mo Having not seen it, I’m imagining the reveal playing out like this:
“I’ve got some good news, and some bad news. We’re up against a relentless, nearly-unstoppable cyborg that is half-robot, half-Rottweiler.”
“What’s the good news?”
“It’s only HALF Rottweiler.”
YES!!! I've been bugging Cecil to review CHOMPS for awhile now! Now we are 2!
I was actually lucky to meet William Sanderson ever since he moved to my city to live.
Lucky sod! Is he often out and about in town? That's awesome
@@mistermatix8241 He has largely kept a low profile, largely because he was in the Deadwood movie and did a book tour for his memoir. But I can say, he is one of the nicest actors I have ever met.
@@bradychambers4035 He seems a nice guy, that's really cool that he lives near you
Your message at the end is so important and true. Thank you for doing this.
:)
The final morph art of the dog looks badass and deserves to be used.
Commentary like yours really helps me understand how films are actually made. Other commentators make reference to how hard it is to make a film, but you really make it understandable for a lay audience. You are by far one of the best film critics I have found on UA-cam, and I hope more people subscribe to your channel. Honestly, I'm ashamed that it's taken me this long to subscribe.
Incidentally, your review of Frozen made me seek out and watch that film all the way through. It was a hard watch, but it moved me in a way that no other film quite has. I can't say that it's my favorite film of all time, but before I watched your review of it, I would probably have just written it off as stupid schlock. Thank you for helping me know better.
Edit: 17:04. Thank you so much for including this. Speaking as someone who has dealt with depression, this is so important. You're right: life is worth living. And to anyone reading this: people care about you, and are willing to help you. Never forget that.
Thanks for the sub! :)
I remember wanting you to cover either this one or stepmonster, so happy to see people acknowledging this little jewel from my childhood.
The best scene in cinema history is when the dog crawls up a damn tree like a lizard then snatches a cat with its tongue like a damn frog.
I don't think we watch the same movie but how I remember it is that Max grew out his fingernails like a cat as he climbed up the tree then ate the cat like a snake because he never grabbed it with his tongue!
Jonathan Lugo Cat, lizard, whatever. They both use claws to climb trees. The tongue though....maybe it’s a false memory, maybe it is the Mandela Effect, maybe it was an alternate/extended scene, but I SWEAR there was a super quick scene of the dogs tongue shooting out and grabbing the cat right before it swallows it whole. I could be completely wrong and maybe it was just my brain filling in missing pieces. Maybe someone else can confirm they saw it too.....
I will say this: there isn’t many ‘killer-dog-climbs-tree-and-eats-cat-whole’ scenes in movies for me to get this confused with something else, and an ejectable prehensile tongue is incredibly specific for me to just pull out of the air.
Awesome flick from VHS rental nights.
Thank you for always bringing films I've never seen to my attention in the most interesting ways possible.
Hope you're doing well.
I've been waiting for you to do this movie for so long one of my favorites it's so underrated thank you
Awesome video! I think this movie is highly underrated and has a really cool feel. Child's Play 2 is my favorite movie, R.I.P John Lafia.
The scene where the dog jumps over the cop cars made me and my buddies rofl for hours
I have honestly never heard of this movie and want to watch it now. That's what I love about this channel. I get to hear about movies that I might otherwise have zero exposure with.
Thanks! I love being able to introduce people to these gems :)
Nice job handling the passing of the director and the psa at the end. And a job on the video as always.
:)
Thank God I have this film in my DVD collection.
I want to thank you so much, Meet the Applegates is a movie I've been thinking of but couldn't remember the title to for years now. Thank you brother.
Would love to see you explore Meet the Applegates, Cecil.
Saw this in the movies with one of my girlfriends of my youth. Classic for me. Great vid !
Nice message at the end.
2:38 But they look so fluffy! (Gets a death glare from my cat).
Just wanted to say how much i appreciate this channel, your doing an awesome job and I am always looking forward to your next video.
Thank you :)
9:55, that scene was in Friday the movie, with Johnny Witherspoon saying, "it's your ass Mr mailman!" Lol!
Lol, yeah, i'd already seen Man's Best Friend, so I instantly recognized it in that scene, in Friday. That became an iconic line for John Witherspoon, & he used it again, in an episode of the Boondocks.
@@brandonpage7087 I don't get why a dog catcher is so happy about that part
He said Mr. Postman actually.
@@dontdiscriminatehateeveryo9263 Ok thanks! 😉
Beautiful message at the end.
Keep up the good work
I love this movie! Thank for taking the time to do this episode and for the numbers at the end.
Rest In Peace John lafia
Another film you inspired me to track down, touching sentiment at the end. I've know too many people who have fallen into the inescapable hole of utter disparity and hopelessness. Awhile ago you did a review of Nothing But Trouble with Dan Akroyd. Could you do an in-depth review of my favorite bizarre comedy of his 1980's Neighbors? It is so weird with John Belushi playing the straight man as Dan Akroyd's Captain Vic and Ramona move in next door to his home at the end of the street, and turn his world upside down. Hilariously bizarre, great social commentary on the times and deconstruction of the American dream all but forgotten by modern audiences. I would love to hear backround of the making of it. My copy is a dvd transfer of my old VHS tape, no extras to watch. And I far as i know it has never been released on dvd/blu-ray. Classic performances! Please please please!
Lance Henriksen should just be in ALL movies
Or when Henriksen isn't available at least Stephen McHattie, who I think looks & sounds a lot like Henriksen.
Thank you for that part at the end.
Cecil it’s good to have you back on a regular basis.
Just wanted to spread some positivity, Lance Hendrickson's a real nice guy by all accounts I've heard.
Was at least the case for the 5 minutes I talked to him at a comic con.
6:58, 1993, dude! Lol!
Thank You.. I was about to comment the same exact thing
Lol thought the same thing, thought damn that was shelved for a while. Cecil is the best can't take that away 👍
I loved 'Man's Best Friend' growing up and you were spot-on about Max being sympathetic. I was just hitting my teens and I cried when Max jumped to protect the girl, only other movie to get me like that was 'Short Circuit 2' when they chopped up Johnny 5.
I've been waiting for you to cover this!! I love this movie, I watched it multiple times as a kid :)
You didn’t have to put that stinger at the end but it was needed. As a person who has suffered from extreme depression and has had family members who took their lives leaving destruction in the wake, I say thank you. Suicide is a permanent answer to a temporary problem! You’re good people, Cecil!
Thanks for exploring this! One of my favourite films. I always wanted to know how they did a lot of the filming and where the concept came from. Thanks again! Love your channel
Thanks!
I remember as a kid our local Video Rental Store had this in their horror section. Was never allowed to rent it, but I always liked looking at its box art with the robot dog.
The scene from Friday along with trailers for when it was in theaters are things I remembered from this film that is why it sticks for me
Very cool at the ending!!!
I remember renting it in 94 and loved it. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid.
I use to always point out that scene from Friday was from man's best friend. It was always a favorite of mine and a friend who died a few years after the movie
I saw this at a movie theater. I felt it was a fun little monster movie.
BTW: Jeffrey Jones as a clown? That has to be the creepiest thing ever.
Absolutely.
What really happened to Jeffrey Jones is creepier 😐
@@davidvega462 Yeah talk about harsher in hindsight.
@@davidvega462 I know. That's what I was referring to.
@@davidvega462 Vastly overblown like Jackson.
I hate the youtube delay it takes time for new vids to show up on the channel. Thankfully your videos come up on my main page.
I remember seeing the trailer for this in the theater as a kid. It had the cliche music and action ramping up at the end and when it cut to the title, _everyone_ in the theater started laughing! Probably not the desired reaction.
big up to good bad flicks. always a good time.
Another blast from the past. I remember this one...such a great take on a monster movie.
Oh my god, Max is Spiderdog. And also how much did they spend on the Tibetan Mastiffs, those dogs are expensive. Thanks Cecil
I love this movie! I was like 8 or 10 when I first saw it...
And I frekkin love the soundtrack to. When the cops starts chasing the dog towards the ending, this epic piece is playing :D
dun
Very underrated movie. One of my faves as a kid.
I have been waiting for this for a long time for time, Cecil. This is one of my favorite movies. You did excellent work here, as always.
Thanks! Glad I didn't disappoint
I truly love this channel it brings joy & peace to me!
I love the exploring series that's probably my favorite!
For such a well made and fun horror film, Mans best friend is forgotten gem.
I used to watch this all the time in the 90's on the USA Network. Good stuff.
My dad watched this movie with me when I was 4 or 5 years old. The memory of the cat being eaten has stayed with me for 30 years.
Sorry Cujo, there is a new dog in town with a higher body count. Say hello to the ultimate killing machine, Max...more like Mad Max.
What makes Max special?
He's a genetically altered dog, spliced with snake DNA, chameleon DNA and others. Max has super speed, can turn invisible like the freakin Predator, jump high even climb and piss acid...wait what?
For some reason Max knows about Car parts so he helps the founder of New Line Cinema, Bob Shaye.......
Thank you Lance Henriksen, you just created a killer dog that goes up to 11. You never fail to amaze.
The part of the movie I had no idea about is Dr. Jarrett's family being murdered. Any idea where this was indicated in the film?
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should have more subs you do a great job
John Lafia: The patron saint of Good Bad Flicks
No love for David DeCoteau or Charles Band? Not even Roger Corman or Golan-Globus?
Belgand plenty of love for them, giving patron saint status to Lafia just felt right.
Didn't he direct Child's Play 2 the best Chucky Sequel.
Hakkem Johnson Yeah he did. Better than the original, in my opinion.
Thank you for the after credit plug for the crisis hotline. You are a great man.
I'm doing my best :)
Never saw this movie but I remember seeing the cover at video stores and it scared the shit outta me lol
I remember seeing this film in the theater; and feeling underwhelmed by it (much like that Gregory Hines film Eve Of Destruction).
Maybe I should give Man's Best Friend another look. 🤔🤔
"This isn't even my final form! OOoOO, Snausages!"
I loved this movie when I was younger🏴
Oh snap! I loved this movie as a kid.
For the Terminator Dog ending, track down Brian Yuzna's Rottweiler from 2004. Pretty goofy CGI, but it might be interesting for a double feature.
Loved Ally Sheedy in this. Randomly...anyone else see her in Fear? She plays a psychic trying to catch a serial killer who is also psychic. Great stuff....
Lance Hendrickson stars in "A Killer Dog!?!"
We just finished watching it. The dog pisses acid and goes invisible.
