No _one_ person could say that Alien is their creation, as Dan O'Bannon wrote most of the story, Ronald Shusett came up with a lot of the more memorable aspects of the film (such as having the creature get aboard the ship via someone's digestive system), Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the Nostromo, etc.
I just love hearing about Gigers artistic, childlike enthusiasm when it comes to his macabre designs and kills. As contrary as it sounds, but there's something heartwarming and wholesome, to hear about a person that comes up with stuff like that, for entertainment. It's like the opposite of a kid telling you about all the cool scenes in an action movie.
MGM didn't want Natasha Henstidge? That's funny because after 25 years I had forgotten most of the other actors but when I hear "Species" I think Natasha!
Or worrying about her acting. I forgot that she even had lines in it. I'm not saying she can't act, but this was a situation where being hot and frequently naked was 90% of the role. Not only would that cover for weaker acting, nobody was going in expecting decent acting.

Did you not watch this video or any of his other videos? Films would get a X rating if people just went 100% on Giger's ideas. Studios have to dumb it down. Pay attention. The train thing was dumb and didn't fit this film. Giger also comes across as a petulant baby and a nightmare to work with no matter how cool his art looks.
Giger is an amazing artist, I had the privilege to study under one of his colleges who did back drop paintings for Alien. He was known to give paintings to every day people who did the laboring jobs on set.
I agree about his talent, skills and vision - yet give him an inch and he takes a light year. This look into his involvement in the film is controversial IMO as it gives the impression of a man asked to do something specific, and then he wants to take over the entire production. Who knows - this may have been exactly how it was.... Giger's Box is way more frightening than Pandora's. You might not want to open that!
In the late 2000's I used to live about 50 yards away from his estate in Oerlikon and I passed his house a couple of times every week. It's not a big house surrounded by a wild garden full with crazy sculptures, although you couldn't see too much over the hedges. In nearly 5 years living there I've seen HRG himself only three or for times from afar, walking around in his garden.

Natasha Henstridge can be proud of herself, this movie would have been long forgotten were it not for her striking looks. I still wish they had done a few things differently, like, actually listen to some of H.R. Giger's suggestions? His ideas, if tinkered just a bit, could made things especially great, like the colour changing body... While Sil lighting up like a christmas tree might not have looked that great, having bioluminescent appendages and streaks going through her translucent body, very similar to those deep sea creatures that look completely freakish and alien, would have complimented her design extraordinarily well - you'd actually notice her translucence, which you barely see as it is.
Giger makes some cool art, but some of his ideas for this movie seem out of place, like the train. It seemed like he has a passion for creepy train art and was looking for any contrived way to fit this idea into the film even if it didn't do anything to advance or serve the story.

This is why great films are so rare, so many decisions in line can turn a potential masterpiece of horror/sci-film genre into a mainstream monster of the week movie. Imagine if executives had the same passión and excitement about their projects as Giger had, what marvelous pieces of art we would have. Given that the movie consists of a group of members of different professions investigating something alien and older than humanity, it is a *very* good Call of Cthulhu 1990 story.
It partly seems like he just wanted to make a film himself. While it would have been nice to incorporate more of his ideas, I get the impression that he was a bit less practical. It seemed like a lot of them are turned down due to expense or difficulty in making them work and he didn't seem very understanding of those factors.
... Like Hollywood wishes he'd do. It's amazing how stupid the corporate machine is in studios. They want money. Money comes from making stuff people like. They want recognition for art, too, but not as much as they want money. So when something is made and people like it, they try to figure out what the formula is. There is no formula. Especially when something is a creative piece of art, rather than merely mindless product. When they try to apply formula to recapture the success of the improbable works of art they accidentally allow to happen, it's even worse. I feel like they've given up entirely on anything other than profit profit profit. It's so depressing. Money is all that matters. Not just making it. Making ALL OF IT.

The details are not overly technical, the balance between tech and social is well done, the pacing is great. 42 mins just passed by, like it was only 10 and learned more about his film (I remember to watch it in movie) I have never thought I want. this movie started the whole modern Chupacabra scare in Puerto Rico that has spread through out the Central and South America. The first call to the police in Puerto Rico came from a woman who had seen the film the night before and was sure she was seeing a creature, a dead on match for the SPECIES alien wandering her neighborhood . Fortean Times and Nick Redfern tracked this urban legend and the woman down to find the beginnings of this whole crazy Chupacabra craziness
You never saw someone riding with another person on the handlebars? Its only really done with the old style of girl's bikes because they have the "seat" dip in the bars. Boys' bikes have the straight bar, which would be unpleasant to sit on.

Didn't know this movie had such a interesting backstory. I knew about the H.R. Giger designs, but never knew it went this deep. This is probably one of my favorite alien movies and am glad to see it getting the GoodBadFlicks treatment. Theres so many ideas in this movie i loved and the concept behind the alien. It would have been cool as hell to see Giger's full vision.

My dad was in this movie! Kinda. He was a conductor for Union Pacific Railroad for forty years. At one point there's a train in the movie and - not that you ever see him but - he was the one driving it! I'm basically famous.
I always get a laugh from the scene when Forest Whitaker goes into the train car where Sil killed the conductor and he says "Something terrible happened here." Well, duh!

Any movie that features Giger’s work will always be tied to Alien because that’s where most people were first exposed to it. His work is so specific that it’s almost the Alien universe itself. You could even make a Species/Alien crossover and it would hold its own.

Been a huge HR Giger fan since before Alien(yes I'm that old) and It's soo sad that Ridley Scott was the only director who could get all the best out of this one in a century artist! It's a good movie thou. Great work C., u are the best!

Species is one of my favourite guilty pleasures because of Natasha Henstridge. Whenever it was on TV I would make a point to watch it (or at least checked back and forth if I was watching something else).
I remember this coming out on VHS in my grandparents video store. Really does make you feel old to think of how long ago that was. Great episode man, keep them coming and we will keep watching.

There were a few corny moments but overall I loved it. I can’t wait to watch this video. I’ve watched your exploring The Mummy video several times.
Gieger really was such a genius, every terrestrial limitation only complicated his vision. I only wonder if with today's budget and technology we could do his work on this a justice. When they told him no, he was disgusted by their short sightedness and did it anyway to show them how it can be done.

One of the first Hollywood movies i watched back in 2002. Over the years somewhere in my sub conscious I thought It had something special about it. You just cemented that feeling.
Eh, I disagree on some of Giger's ideas for this one. Glowing metal alien and ghost train are interesting concepts, but don't really work for a movie that is, essentially, a hunt for an escaped serial killer with an apocalyptic sci-fi twist. Little too 'high weirdness' if that makes sense. Would have worked in a more standard space horror movie though.
The train actually fits really well into Sil's transformation, but you have to be a bit Freudian about it. The train is this big powerful sex drive that is waking up inside her and threatens to destroy her if she doesn't mate.
This was a great video. I really love these extended videos you've been doing lately that take a deeper dive into some of these films. I'm a huge fan of this movie and I didn't know about half the stuff you brought up. Great job brother you have one of the best UA-cam channels hands down.

Practically every 10 mins I hear ‘STUDIO SAID NO’ . It just makes me think the ONLY thing Studios ever do is say NO to everything. So why are they in business? If they have ZERO creative input, can’t ever make decisions, want to make ONLY money, jump all over a production once it makes a success then what’s the point. I’ll be so happy when STUDIOS go out of business & they get rid of incompetent executives. I even hear they are making a film about Robert Evans ( Exec @ Paramount) & Coppola over his battle to make The Godfather, staring Jake Gyllenhaal & Oscar Isaac with Barry Levinson (Rain Man) directing …Nothing changes. The Arecibo Radiotelescope fell apart this week. We don't know if it will be rebuilt and watching how influential it was in the 90s higglights what a huge tragedy this event is.

Geiger knew his shit. He had such great ideas and the studio ignoring him only made for mistakes.

I'd actually forgotten how Sil was created. It really was a clever concept for a movie
Natasha Henstridge can be proud of herself, this movie would have been long forgotten were it not for her striking looks. I still wish they had done a few things differently, like, actually listen to some of H.R. Giger's suggestions? His ideas, if tinkered just a bit, could made things especially great, like the colour changing body... While Sil lighting up like a christmas tree might not have looked that great, having bioluminescent appendages and streaks going through her translucent body, very similar to those deep sea creatures that look completely freakish and alien, would have complimented her design extraordinarily well - you'd actually notice her translucence, which you barely see as it is.
Giger makes some cool art, but some of his ideas for this movie seem out of place, like the train. It seemed like he has a passion for creepy train art and was looking for any contrived way to fit this idea into the film even if it didn't do anything to advance or serve the story.

I always amazed to learn just how involved Giger was in so many aspects of the he worked on. He didn't just make a design, drop it off and leave.
It partly seems like he just wanted to make a film himself. While it would have been nice to incorporate more of his ideas, I get the impression that he was a bit less practical. It seemed like a lot of them are turned down due to expense or difficulty in making them work and he didn't seem very understanding of those factors.
He was also involved in the PC games that used his art.
... Like Hollywood wishes he'd do. It's amazing how stupid the corporate machine is in studios. They want money. Money comes from making stuff people like. They want recognition for art, too, but not as much as they want money. So when something is made and people like it, they try to figure out what the formula is. There is no formula. Especially when something is a creative piece of art, rather than merely mindless product. When they try to apply formula to recapture the success of the improbable works of art they accidentally allow to happen, it's even worse. I feel like they've given up entirely on anything other than profit profit profit. It's so depressing. Money is all that matters. Not just making it. Making ALL OF IT.
Your mention of the Arecibo observatory right around the time when they announced it is gonna close down is a bittersweet sendoff to a science giant.
I mentioned it at the very end because while I was working on this, I found out it was being decommissioned

this movie started the whole modern Chupacabra scare in Puerto Rico that has spread through out the Central and South America. The first call to the police in Puerto Rico came from a woman who had seen the film the night before and was sure she was seeing a creature, a dead on match for the SPECIES alien wandering her neighborhood . Fortean Times and Nick Redfern tracked this urban legend and the woman down to find the beginnings of this whole crazy Chupacabra craziness

You never saw someone riding with another person on the handlebars? Its only really done with the old style of girl's bikes because they have the "seat" dip in the bars. Boys' bikes have the straight bar, which would be unpleasant to sit on.

Didn't know this movie had such a interesting backstory. I knew about the H.R. Giger designs, but never knew it went this deep. This is probably one of my favorite alien movies and am glad to see it getting the GoodBadFlicks treatment. Theres so many ideas in this movie i loved and the concept behind the alien. It would have been cool as hell to see Giger's full vision.

My dad was in this movie! Kinda. He was a conductor for Union Pacific Railroad for forty years. At one point there's a train in the movie and - not that you ever see him but - he was the one driving it!

I always get a laugh from the scene when Forest Whitaker goes into the train car where Sil killed the conductor and he says "Something terrible happened here." Well, duh!

Any movie that features Giger’s work will always be tied to Alien because that’s where most people were first exposed to it. His work is so specific that it’s almost the Alien universe itself. You could even make a Species/Alien crossover and it would hold its own.

Species is one of my favourite guilty pleasures because of Natasha Henstridge. Whenever it was on TV I would make a point to watch it (or at least checked back and forth if I was watching something else).

Gieger really was such a genius, every terrestrial limitation only complicated his vision. I only wonder if with today's budget and technology we could do his work on this a justice. When they told him no, he was disgusted by their short sightedness and did it anyway to show them how it can be done.

One of the first Hollywood movies i watched back in 2002.
Over the years somewhere in my sub conscious I thought It had something special about it.
You just cemented that feeling.
Eh, I disagree on some of Giger's ideas for this one. Glowing metal alien and ghost train are interesting concepts, but don't really work for a movie that is, essentially, a hunt for an escaped serial killer with an apocalyptic sci-fi twist. Little too 'high weirdness' if that makes sense. Would have worked in a more standard space horror movie though.
Yeah, you get the feeling Giger wanted the ghost train in the film simply because he thought of it, whether it fit in the movie or not.

The train actually fits really well into Sil's transformation, but you have to be a bit Freudian about it. The train is this big powerful sex drive that is waking up inside her and threatens to destroy her if she doesn't mate.

Practically every 10 mins I hear ‘STUDIO SAID NO’ . It just makes me think the ONLY thing Studios ever do is say NO to everything. So why are they in business? If they have ZERO creative input, can’t ever make decisions, want to make ONLY money, jump all over a production once it makes a success then what’s the point. I’ll be so happy when STUDIOS go out of business & they get rid of incompetent executives. I even hear they are making a film about Robert Evans ( Exec @ Paramount) & Coppola over his battle to make The Godfather, staring Jake Gyllenhaal & Oscar Isaac with Barry Levinson (Rain Man) directing …Nothing changes. Thank God for resurgence of Independent film today.
