Movies, games, and the occasional editorial.
From A-Z list films, video games, and other overlooked goodness.
Honestly, the most shocking fact about this film is that Gene Simmons did ANYTHING for free.
Have you see Trick or Treats?
I fully expected him to say 'he liked Eli Roth, so he sold him the rights for a slight discount'
Exactly what I was thinking.
Hahaha 100 % true
Eli Roth knows EVERYBODY lol
10:53 Them telling Keanu to redo his lines like he didn't want to shoot the kids in the face made me LOL.
The "Free Pizza" bit was one of the best parts of the movie, and Keanu nailed it.
He nailed it ... Not intentionally though.
That was an awesome line in a shitty movie. The movie was such dog shit that it didn't do the line justice!!!!
There's a place in hell for ANYONE who DARES does anything mean or nasty to Keanu! He must be protected he's a national treasure!
@@silvervalleystudios2486 this movie was good what you talking about
"polishing his ego then polishing his wood" i owe you a coke
:)
Really cool of Lionsgate to sponsor. Hope they continue with stuff like that in the future.
I hope so too :)
Too funny I saw the ad after already seeing “Spiral” last month 😆
@@LucyLioness100 hows it compare to the rest of the franchise? It looked better then the test of the series to me, but I hated saw so I haven't bothered seeing it
@@arthas640 "but I hated saw" Nope, you're not allowed to hate Saw. it's an objectively great movie.
@@the-NightStar No movie is objectively great. That's just not how art works. Especially a James Wan movie.
Cecil is our memory. He's our championed archivist. He's the patron saint of under-appreciated or would-be forgotten movies!
:)
I actually didn't enjoy this movie that much, but for some reason the exploring videos always make me appreciate these movies way more. Never realized it was a remake.
I loved tt it needs a aequel were kensu chacater gets revenge
This was a good movie with an unusual premise. Just finished watching it. It was very disturbing how insane those girls were and how much they were able to get away with whatever they wanted bc they are the "perfect victims." It was still interesting to hear that line about all of their victims giving in to temptation no matter how much they love their wives and families. Makes you wonder if they were trying to prove a point in their own sick way just like the Joker, going after whatever guy they wanted.
😂 Horrible movie, but it's so bad and stupid that becomes funny.
Unusual? This was a remake.
Have to admit to finding this video a great deal more entertaining than Knock Knock. There's also a far higher chance I'll re-watch this video in the near future unlike Knock Knock. Sometimes the tale of what happened behind the scenes to get a film made can be far more interesting than the film itself.
Everything Cecil uploads is vastly more enjoyable than anything Roth has ever made.
@@Axolotl_Mischief What are you talking about? Eli Roth is one of the greatest directors of all time. His films are complex and have multiple layers that you just wouldn't understand. Jesus Christ, I can't even joke like this over text without laughing lol. Yeah, Eli is terrible.
GBF is a good channel. If you havent seen it then it piques your interest, if you have it brings more insight in to its back story
I think that oddly what makes some film buffs enjoy some of the movies that a lot of people find bad - when you gain enough knowledge about filmmaking you can sort-of say how most of the movie was made. So, in a way, movie nearly always tells to stories: one about itself and one about the plot.
The film is absolute garbage but Cecil’s video is fantastic! I’ve already watched this video 7 times.
That line at the end of the video "I'm from Oakland!" killed me, dude 😂
Agreed, that part was great. The girls are trying to find a new victim, and that dude sees them coming from miles away.
He wasn't from Oakland if he got punked out by two girls like that dying of asthma, he's probably from the Oakland Hills or Berkeley for that matter.
@@nicwinsteadart5330 - Pretty sure we're not talking about the same character. Jon and I are talking about the black guy at the end of this video who basically told them to "move along".
@@ajmeyers5661 I was talking about the friend/assistant that said he's from Oakland and dies of a panic attack are you talkin about the original from the 70s or the new one?
@@ajmeyers5661 did you ever watch the movie? You can find the clip on UA-cam he goes out gasping for air like a fish out of water
Personally, I don't really think it works as a thriller, but it's hilarious as a black comedy. Free pizza and all!
100 percent, I love this movie because Keanu Reeves performance is hilarious. It’s not even a bad performance, he just goes full Nic Cage at points and it’s great.
Agreed it’s a poor thriller & the dark comedy touches don’t really gel with the thriller elements. Had Roth stuck more with a dark comedy it would’ve been a little more cohesive
@@LucyLioness100 it 100% seems like he just did what the second director did with the original. Roth is such a hack. Guy doesn't have an ounce of originality in his body.
The "Free Pizza," scene was brilliant but the whole time my Dad's wise words just kept popping into my head.
"There's no such thing as a free meal son."
Thanks for the video Cecil :D
Thanks for watching!
Best line in Spiral.
"Forrest Gump made a billion dollars selling shrimp, and Jenny still won’t f*** him!"
Lmao 😂
That doesn't make since. She did. She even left him with thier kid
@@curleyqreviews9793 She forced herself once but she clearly did not like it to the point where she ran away from him as a result. She was such a bitch through whole film.
@@StrazdasLT and gave him the aids baby lol
She did 😑
I love how most of your videos can make literally any movie sound good.
I liked this movie but at times Keanu's performance left me wanting. But now that I've heard the bts, I can appreciate it much more
Also probably the only time I've ever heard Gene Simmons being generous (Gene-rous?)
It's a story of competent people whom kept listening to bad advice: the name, the tone, the cutting out of the John Wick ending...
Dude, I agree! The tone of the movie is not thriller. If they added the ending , maybe a thriller. The movie is too close to the original 😶.
I wish we got the John Wick ending
Same tbh
Me too. I hated that they did that to him and just got away with it.
@@arlem525 yeah I didn't really get why he changed it because it would be a cliffhanger because both endings are really cliffhangers.
1000% agree. Film and entire narrative would have been far far improved with the inclusion of the 2 Villians being Brutally murdered by the creature they created. No question
@@arlem525 this way we need a sequel we're he gets his revenge
I had to pause the video for a sec. Gene Simmons just gave someone something? For free? I'm blown away.
I was surprised too, its unheard of.
"Gene'll tell you he invented orange juice." -Dio.
I've seen the image of Keanu buried and gagged many times; it's good to finally know where it comes from!
Great exploring! I couldn't agree more about how remakes should focus on good ideas with poor execution instead of classics and masterpieces that will never be outdone.
Love all the research you do for these films
Wow, nice story, didn't knew a thing about it.
Both actress are gorgeous in this movie and I hated them so much in this movie
As a Chilean i NEVER heard of this movie, i knew about Aftershock thanks to some advertising at the time but was easily forgotten, the only thing i remember of this other movie was the news of Keanu going around the city, and since he was so chill nobody knew it was him until later (there are even pics of him just going through the metro).
And it has been a looong time since i heard about Lopez and it felt very strange knowing the things he has done, well... how i put this... while being a mix bag of a director with some outlandish ideas in his youth but boring ass stuff later, he is involved in accusations of sexual harassment being later found guilty of it, soooo is kinda strange to hear about him from a neutral/external voice without prior knowledge
la wea cuática, eso explica muchas cosas
Hard agree on this one, is strange to hear a "neutral" voice about our local hack and abuser...
As recent as Aug 2021 this whole thing was still in court. Not saying this isn't to worry about, but saying he was "found guilty of it" is pretty misleading.
@@knwr Well, as of 2023, he was found guilty and sentenced to 5 years (and 1 day for some reason) in prison.
@@hoodedman6579and he got released, sadly
i can always count on you, Cecil- as you consistently bring movies i've never heard of, but definitely want to watch.
thank you!❤
:)
Never knew it was a remake.
Which makes the movie that much better
Roth doesn't do 'original'.
@@Axolotl_Mischief yeah should've been obvious to me it wasn't original.
This film was so bad I have no desire to watch the original.
Now this is how you do a remake! Cecil, thanks for introducing me to both Death Games & Knock Knock. I've never heard of either before this, but definitely want to check them out.
Hope you enjoy it!
So happy to see a sponsor on the channel! Hope you get more sponsors. I wish I had the money to support your work. Love your channel. Your channel reignited the love for movies and movie making in me. Thank you so much.
Awesome! Really makes me happy to hear. :)
"It's fathers day and he's not having sex."
Yeah Keanu was miscast.
I LOVED this movie! One of the most enjoyable good/bad movies I’ve ever seen
I kinda saw this movie by mistake. A piece of it anyway. Walked in to a friend's house and it was on t v . When I asked him about it, he said some dumb movie my sister is watching. About 10 12 minutes later, I left. But I never forgot about it. So , I tracked it down on DVD and watched it. Great movie 🎥.
Ana de Armas was FANTASTIC in Knives Out.
She's also in latest James Bond movie
I always look forward to your exploring videos. Thank you for this
Thanks! Pretty big Exploring coming soon

Putting these on at work and love hearing the stories of movies I have seen and movies I heard about or knew nothing about. Would love a video on the guyver movies!
This film was hard to go through when the guy wasn't even deserving of the insane punishment.
I know I saw this film in tubi last year
Thanks for another great episode, Cecil. I knew Knock Knock was a remake, but I wasn't sure of the title. I will give Eli Roth credit for taking an obscure film that nobody remembers and doing a remake that makes a better film. Universal should stop teasing us with a Jaws re-make and instead turn their energy to remaking "Mako: The Jaws Of Death".
Do you think it’s possible if you can do an exploring video on My Blue Heaven from 1990 staring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis.
Even better, a compare/contrast with Goodfellas since they're inspired by the same guy.
That is such a fun movie. It’s not great, but Moranis and Martin bouncing off each other is terrific.
Forgot all about Aftershock. I really liked Knock Knock and didn't get the hate. Also deserves thanks for introducing us to Ana de Armas
I like Knock Knock too but you really don't understand why it gets hate? Seriously?
I understand why people don’t like it - but right up my alley loved it
This was an excellent exploring episode. Good to see more of you in In Search of Darkness PT 2!
Thank you!
Great.. now I can't stop saying, "Chee-lay" LOL
Excellent. I have adored Coleen Camp since They All Laughed. Great research.
Thanks!
I just wanted to say thank you for being you!!! Your videos always put me in a better mood 🙃
Thank you for watching! Glad to make your day a little brighter :)
Death Game is actually also a remake the original is Teenage Innocence (1973) so now there are 4 movies with the same premise.
Gotta be honest bro, your videos are what I put on to help me sleep. Ive also watched them for entertainment purposes and theyre quite good.
Thank you for the video! I like this movie, it's simple and can actually happen to anyone (well, I don't believe in free pizza, but I'm no good looking as Keanu...). Although the ending is good, I think I prefer the discarded one. Finding them like he did is a really clever twist (and we would have another Keany-kick-ass-character going after a dog).
Thanks for watching!
when we think you are out of movies to review... you pull us back in!!
I'm happy to know about the other ending and wish it had it, ideally plus scenes where his wife understands he was just attacked. I actually didn't like the free pizza part either, since the character acted so honorable up until he was nearly forced to not be, to the point I don't believe he was interested in anything but helping. Overall I don't think it's a good movie, where Funny Games is brutal and unnecessary, but good as a movie.
Eli Roth is Ed Wood with much larger budgets.
I'm not a fan of Ed Wood, but I see that as an insult, to Ed Wood.......
hah. the "spiral" add in the beginning was the first add I enjoyed watching ;-)
also, if I had kids, I would be freaking happy to be left alone on father's day. silence, the best gift ever ;-)
“If you missed it in theaters...” lol
I’m convinced this was meant to be a dark comedy. Roth is a lot smarter than people give him credit. All of his films are laced with satire.
Yep, it was an intentional dark comedy.
I think your giving him way too much credit
@@randomguy6679 I don’t think you’re giving him enough.
It's hilarious but not in any intentional way. Lol I just think the whole thing is unbelievable. Which is why it's so funny. Two hot chicks don't just randomly turn up at your door. 😂
@@jimfaust6342 I don't think realistic scenarios are what Roth is interested in. Neither am I!
A lot of the appeal of the films that inspired Eli Roth is the campy nature. Seems like he's just trying to pay homage to that.
This film wasn't very good, but I agree with OP that the director knows exactly how ridiculous the premise is.
Grindhouse finally put up the Death Game blu-ray and I already pre-ordered a copy, packaging looks badass and I'm excited to see how the restoration looks
Another fantastic "Exploring" vid! I have a (probably) unhealthy love for your work, my friend!
Thank you!
I watched this film on a whim when Bret Easton Ellis interviewed Roth on his podcast. They talked about Green Inferno and Knock Knock. I did them as a double header and it kind of worked. Loved Knock Knock and another stellar video from GBF as always
Ellis and Roth? What was that called, 'douchebags interviewing douchebags'?
@@Axolotl_Mischief we get it, you don’t have to go on every comment shitting on one guy, it’s obsessive and narcissistic
I feel bad for Keanu for having to deal with this "script". One of the worst films I have ever seen.
agree, awful movie.
Watch more movies.
You have to broaden your horizon it can't be all hostel, green inferno movies, pay attention to the mood the set design the camera work the cinematography the art design the house keanu's different role as an actor you have to put yourself in the actors shoes. It's a good film.
@iamcopperhead I like that you're implying that the only reason why someone would hate Knock Knock was because they LIKED Hostel and Green Inferno. Those movies sucked too.
Knock Knock occupies a rare space in my film appreciation. It's a movie I'm glad I saw, and I enjoyed it, but I never want to watch it ever again.
Cannibal Holocaust, Hard Candy, There Will Be Blood, and a handful of others are also in this strange category. This distinction is not entirely regarding
the quality of the films themselves, but rather how the films made me feel. I believe that art should make me feel something. I respect it when art makes
me feel something, or forces me to consider different aspects of existence, as well as varying perspectives on those aspects. Or sometimes it's just neat
to see a movie with a different sort of approach to story telling. Whatever the case may be, sometimes I appreciate a film's capacity for making me think
and feel, while at the same time, never wanting to think or feel those things ever again. Sometimes I just watch Prom Night 2.
This remake and death wish are very underrated
You really make me care about movies I thought were terrible. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
I saw knock knock on Netflix one afternoon. Then a few months later I was watching these grindhouse trailer and when this movie came up I was like 'OMW, that was a remake !?'
I feel like Eli Roth's movies are better in concept than in practice. Like if you took the same idea but gave it to a better writer and director you'd get a much better movie.
This movie was so good
Still waiting for a Blu-ray re-issue of DEATH GAME... Grindhouse Releasing has promised one but has yet to deliver.
Even though I hated the movie, the ending is absolutely HILARIOUS in a darkly comedic way.
I think they should have just kept the ending where the girls are hit by a van. It would have been a short surprise that went straight to the point
I went in pretty blind, and found this to be quite a good shock. Good departure from Reeves' typical films.
I don't think I seen any saw past three. The first death in three made me say nope, and I never watched any again. The first saw will always be one of the best classic horrors ever. God it's so good.
It's also the only film other than Stunt Rock to feature the band Sorcery in the soundtrack. Sorcery the band that tries to make the wizard and dragon painted on the side of a van come to life.
Talking with a few people on Twitter it turns out Sorcery is also in Rocktober Blood as well.
Classic movie. I recommended it to my coworkers. Now they hate me.
Spiral is surprisingly a good film, I was hesitant to watch it as I love Chris Rock as a comedian but was unsure of him in a serious role until I saw him in Fargo the series. He was amazing, I also watched another under-rated film of his before this The Immortals absolutely awesome film, a comedy action movie & again Rock has some serious scenes in that too
Nobody else liked it
People don’t enjoy movies where an innocent character gets abused and the villains get away with it, we get shit on enough in reality, don’t need to watch it happen to someone else, it makes my stomach hurt. Same as when a character is accused of doing something they didn’t do, I hate watching that, Roth should have known this wouldn’t work.
Just found out I have cancer, your videos are such a pleasure and joy to listen to and have helped me through some dark times, thanks dude
I'm really sorry, I hope you get through it ok. I'm glad in my own small way that I was able to help.
@@GoodBadFlicks thank you man
I did a matte paint and a little pony pantsu design for this movie 🤭
I don't like movies like this, where the victim is innocent and had to be manipulated to do something then be blamed and tortured for it?
if anyone comes to my place at 2am i'm not even answering the door, let alone eating the pizza.
(that said, this was a really interesting video! i love this series.)
I would first look for the first weapon , a baseball bat , a knife etc . Then my phone to call the cop's if thing's really get bad . No one stopping by at 2am has good intentions. Especially a ex girlfriend 😆
Eli Roth Approach to film making 101:
Step 1: Write "The Point" on anvil.
Step 2: Drop said anvil on audience's head.
Step 3: Profit. $$$
Am I the only one that kept thinking he was showing pics of Zachary Quinto?
Roth didn't know what Evan was going to do? Well....that would be up to the imagination of the viewer.....and it would be far twisted than you think if they showed you.
Please do an Exploring… or regular GBF on Michael Haneke’s Funny Games. It deserves to be more well known.
Annnnnnnd Ana de Armas Becoming a Huge Star, All thanks to role as Bond Girl from No Time To Die.
I had to pull it up/look into it...
The protagonist from Death Game plays the dad in Rushmore (Wes Anderson)
The "John Wick" ending would have been so much better. (For crying out loud, they even kidnapped his dog!)
The two movies have drastically different endings. This makes some statement about our concept of justice over the past 40 years.
But to tell you the truth, the ending of Knock, Knock, enrages me!
I remember a friend of mine putting this on at a party and I was sure it was Keanu's other stinker from around the same time, Siberia
I just realized I missed 73 episodes. I'm going to turn on notifications. You are the 1st and probably the last one I'll do this for.
Thank you! It really helps. :)
I remember watching Death Game on HBO in the early 80s-Then for years tried to find a single person who remembered it...Until now!
Honestly for the free pizza line I'd always refuse it and might call 911 if it was suspicious enough. That is mostly due to hearing this one story about some kids that took a free pizza in the middle of the night, and they almost ate it but before they could their dog started eating it, and the dog either died or nearly died because of the pizza being poisoned. Could be an urban legend like the Halloween razor candies thing meant to make kids more cautious on Halloween, but hell the pizza story worked on me so if it was one it was effective at conveying it's message.
I think it boils down to your worldview. Do you think the universe is generally benevolent (or at least not malicious) or foreboding and cruel?
Not accepting good fortune is a curse in and of itself, although sometimes you are going to get the shaft (but you'll have interesting stories to tell).
@@quintessenceSL The universe does not care. It does not subscribe to your standards of good or bad. Humans though, humans are extremely malicious creatures. There is no free lunch.

Isn't a paid promotion of a movie on a movie review channel a conflict of interest?
This isn't a review. I'm talking about the history of a film I enjoy.
In general it's a review channel. You just reviewed the film in your response. I watch your videos regularly so, I know your content. I like your content, but how will I know if your opinions on films are valid or just Payola.
@@sandersnoblitt7014 if you watch his content regularly, you should know. Quit being a hypocrite.
I've been nothing but honest in all of my reviews. I've explained in clear detail the reasons I liked or disliked something. I've had people screaming at me because I love the DCU and didn't like Fury Road. Just recently when I did the review for Stallone Frank that is, I disclosed that I am friends with the director and take that into consideration if you think that would taint my review. I have never and will never be bought. You have no idea how many deals I've turned down (well paying ones) because they were shady or didn't fit the channel.
@@GoodBadFlicks Maybe you're just being more honest about it. I just started a video where a popular reviewer is just reviewing AMC+ movies. Why? It's a capitalist society.
