Hey Mav! Definitely appreciate all the different ways you show to heat the truck. I have a super similar set up for my own travels and it's definitely nice to see what works!
Little tip, definitely handy with the new knives you got. When you scrape thing of your board do it with the non cutting side or you'll blund your knife alot faster
Excellent advice! I took a cooking class a few years ago and the chef drilled that into us. Never scrape your cutting board with the sharp edge of the knife.
He already dulled the blades with his constant need to just chop down through stuff straight to the board instead of slicing. You saw how it barely cut through the pork which it should've sliced like butter if they were as sharp as when he got them.
Ok. Coming from someone in the energy field, you should NOT be burning 2 fuels next to each other (diesel and propane) theres gas exhaust in the air and the spark from your diesel combustion can cause a fire or even explosion.
We use those heaters to heat mobile labs in the field. They work great. Install one in the hi ace and run the exhaust straight down through the floor if you can.
I'm glad you are still alive. Please consider leaving the unit outside and pipe in the hot air. I use the same unit on my truck shell and have posted a few videos showing how I installed it and how well it works if you are interested.
Those hose clamps were for tightening the exhaust hose onto the header/outlet on the heater and the little rectangle with 2 round outlets is a muffler for the exit of the exhaust. It should also definitely not be just set on the floor. You need either a stone/concrete or metal plate under it. Or at least a decent sized air gap to keep it away from anything flammable.
Put the heater on the roof rack and then pipe the actual heated air down from the top into the side window with 2x 90° 3" PVC pipes, or 3" metal flex duct , easy set up and take down and you can just keep the heater on the roof rack ... and then just let the exhaust go right out the top of the unit...
MAV the only thing that gave me consolation and peace during your sketchy diesel heater video was knowing you came home to produce and post the segment. All kinds of ways that thing was dangerous glad you're okay. How did you get that spilled diesel out?
It's ok where it sets, but I never heard you say where all that diesel came from? But you need to put something at the end of your exhaust pipe instead of letting it flop around under the truck. Also some people will say you need to put a piece of metal under the heater. I say you should put a piece of fire stone under it and in front of your wiring harness you have running thur the bed by it. Because metal will still transfer all that heat to your carpet and wires. Becareful Mav. ❤️👍

Mav you give me the inspiration to try camping this summer bro! I don’t wanna start in the cold but I will evolve to that! Amazing video as always! Thanks for the inspiration I will hit 1k this year
This was just insane... please be careful 🙏 I was freaking out when you went ahead with you're cooking, one spark and that would have been disastrous 😳 Glad you made it home safe 😊
Diesel does NOT ignite by spark like the vapors of gasoline. Diesel is far safer and not nearly as dangerous. Dump some diesel on the ground and "light it on fire." it actually takes some seconds of constant flame to heat diesel to a high enough temp to ignite. Gasoline is not similar, in that, gasoline can ignite from a single spark to its vapors. This is why it is illegal to run your car while gassing up, but it is not illegal to run a diesel vehicle while fueling up. Just some food for thought.
Love everything you’ve been doing with the channel. I know you do what you want, but a stealth camping video would be pretty cool to see again. I don’t know why I love those videos so much lol.

Just for people watching, that type of diesel heater in the metal case is not meant for use in campers!! You need the kind that can sit directly on the floor of the vehicle with exhaust and air intake going out the bottom of vehicle and not touching anything. Be safe! ❤
I adore this channel and I think you are wicked I can’t even tell you what in particular it is I’m just drawn to your videos maybe it’s cause I am living vicariously through you doing the things I’d love to do but haven’t. Keep on trucking dude
You need a Mr. Hearer Buddy used in the van community, around 80 bucks small enough to not take a bunch of space but will warm up your space! Keep on trukin Mav!
Your tail gate sticking problem is fixable without replacing anything the latch linkage is adjustable and so are the strikers on the box ... I work at a body shop so I adjust tailgate fitment and smooth latch operation all the time. Lubrication also helps on the latches and handle. You need a T30 bit to remove the cover and a pick tool to make the linkage shorter. a T50 bit for the strikers I believe. If they are to far in it will case sticking and allot of tension. Do not try to release the plastic linkage conectors without the truck being in a heated garage or when it's warm out because the plastic gets brittle in the cold and will snap.
Hey-der-itz-fixed kinda setup - totally red-green style for those of you who are old enough. If that were me, and I spilt diesel all over the carpet, episode over, I'm out. You get an award for being so transparent about how you just stumble through things. Mr Magoo-style.
I would think you shouldn't put the exhaust pipe vent under the side of your truck where your canopy is. It should be venting out above where you stay. So that the exhaust is venting out above you. Not traveling from bottom to top, and then going in and around you.
on installs I've seen similar heaters used for in van conversions and such they usually vent out the bottom, maybe a bit to the side, pretty sure as long as he's not trying to use it inside an enclosed space it should be good as natural air movement will keep the exhaust from building up
Dude, I’m happy you made it through the night! These units need a good burn in for the first run and will smoke during that time! Your best bet is to put the whole assembly outside and run heat duct into your cabin, I just finished building a box and doing this for my trailer and made a quick video. Those hose clamps that come with the unit for the exhaust are garbage as you have found out. Go to the hardware store and buy some decent stainless ones as they do not seal well and carbon monoxide can leak! Keep all that crap outside and a lot of your issues will go away, including the chance of spilling diesel fuel. So many more tips but yeah, spend some time researching this and it will be your best heat option for any of your camping situations!
@@nrgzrbunny7775 These comments are hilarious. Clearly so many people dont understand that diesel and gas are not that similar..... Gas vapors ignite, diesel vapors do not. 🤣🤣
I'd be really worried about the exhaust melting all the wires that are right by it. Get a stand and run the exhaust up. Just get a metal chimney style cover to keep snow/rain/whatever else from running down the exhaust.
@syk0 a wood burning camping stove would be much safer and they make tent style Chutes that a simple piece of canvas over the window could take care of. They are perfect for tiny homes and camping conversions and much cleaner burn to the environment actually more natural I should say.
You should get a metal stand to put the heater on top of, like people do with computers to keep it off the ground (probably make the exhaust easier to manage/stay in also) but yeah.
I have a couple of these heaters. The best way to run the exhaust is straight through the floor. They are designed that way to reduce the amount of soot buildup inside the unit.
Hey Mav you can mount that heater outside and run a duct from the output into the truck. They put out lots of heat so you wouldn't loose much with it being outside. You could make a basket that you can put up and take down to put in the roof of the cap.
Yes the heater needs to be outside and heat pumped in with the heat output hose. The heater the exhaust and fresh air intake all need to be outside. And keep the fresh air intake far away from the exhaust hose. You may have to buy a longer fresh air hose. To keep it a good distance from the exhaust. Only thing going into the truck should be the heat output hose. The bigger hose.
Wrapping the heater exhaust in header wrap and maybe wrapping the wires too will help reduce the exhaust pipe temps and save your wires. You can grab some from the auto parts store in 15 or 50 foot rolls for a decent price. Also I know its already too late for this but sending the heater exhaust out of the top of the shell probably would have been a more efficient route. Cutting a small square out of the shell and drilling in a couple of pieces of sheet metal with a hole drilled in the center for the exhaust would be plenty. Then I would probably focus on keeping the heater up off of the floor/carpet using a metal or stone/countertop surface. This would be to keep the bottom of the heater element from burning through anything underneath. Hindsight is always 20/20. Glad you're safe man, that diesel spill could have been the end of that truck in a hurry.
Thanks for the video Mav! Keep On Truckin!! And omg did that diesel get on your bed!!!!!!!! How in the hell were you able to sit in there after spilling that diesel!?!? That had to have stunk to high heavens!!
Mav, time to give Will's Whereabouts in England a shout about his trials and tribulations about his experience with his diesel heater(s). Also, Foresty Forest from Western Canada has his setup really well. Wouldn't this have been better installed in the garage or am I missing something. Stay safe and healthy Mav!
Hey mav. I use the same heater. Mount the heater on blocks to raise it up and add some tin for heat shielding. I also recommend having the cold air intake hose running out side like the exhaust. The air intake does but out some smoke upon start up and shut off. I’ve had the heater for two years with zero issues.
As someone who uses a diesel heater 12+ hours a day to heat my converted camper van, I would advise against raising it up on the floor. The gaskets underneath these all-in-one units are not the best, and can leak Carbon monoxide with all of the vibrations from driving. The best kind of diesel heater is the standard one that you'd have to assemble -- mount it directly to the floor, piping both the exhaust and intake outside the vehicle, secure it directly to the floor, and seal with high temp. silicone.
Hey Mav great vid. Yeah I have an older gen diesel heater and I had to be careful of the exhaust pipe. She gets as hot as the air that comes out. Raise it off the carpet then just wrap it with silver heat wrap thats close to those other wires... good luck
Mav, I have been heating my Cherokee with a Camco Wave 3 L/P heater. Small 5 lb propane bottle back against the lift gate, Wave 3 heater behind the drivers seat next to the rear passenger door. I puts out a very comfortable dry heat with very little moisture. Being where you are you might want the larger Wave 6 for higher output.
Definitely keep the heater they work great. Just set it up better. Maybe bolt it down to some 4x4 blocks. And wrap your wiring next to the exhaust. And definitely check out where that diesel came from that was on the carpet.

Hey Mav, I have installed three of these diesel heaters in my Volkswagen buses over the past couple years. I’ve had nothing but good luck with them but yeah, the preparation is everything. I would get some hvac code heat tape and seal the hole you made for the exhaust and make an elevated base for the heater in the truck. Also the intake for the heater’s combustion engine should ideally ran outside the truck. I run my exhaust and intake straight through the floor of my vw bus. I can send pictures if you’d like!

Mav, the first thing I was taught when studying Civil Construction is that diesel is highly cancerous and should you spill it on you to wash it off immediately. I don't think people realise this before they go playing around with diesel. I hope it all works out.
Hey mav, best place to mount that type of heater in your vehicle would be in the front cab behind a seat and route the exhaust straight down through the floor board ina. Safe location. Cuts the noise down greatly and you can route the warm air through your window between front and back. I live right at the beginning of the road you bought that new house on if you ever want help setting it up. I use these things in my perm and portable ice shack. Throw 2 cycle oil in it 100:1 ratio and the pump will be quieter and last longer.

Title of this video should be, How To Convert Your Truck Camper Into a Crematorium. 😆
Ok. Coming from someone in the energy field, you should NOT be burning 2 fuels next to each other (diesel and propane) theres gas exhaust in the air and the spark from your diesel combustion can cause a fire or even explosion.
yeah, clownin.
Exactly
Oh well. God kept him safe on this one so that he could possibly learn something from people like you in the comments. Take care!
I hope he sees this comment
I was very worried about him cooking after having diesel spill on the floor, etc. I hope he reads your warnings!!
The best intro yet. 😂👍🏻 something about you marching through the snow to look at the camera and say howdy got me.
I have the same one. I put it outside and run the heat in. Works great, and a lot safer.
Do you sit it on the ground?
Pretty foolproof setup you’ve got - I’d personally do the same, especially with all the roof space Mav has.
@@JB50713 No, on a table
Maybe that humming sound, and the warmth, is what had you sleeping so good. Great video Mav
Usually people set these all in ones up outside and run the heat threw the hole. This avoids exhaust leakage into the camper.
That's what I saw on another video. Unit and exhaust outside with a hose to blow in the heat.
Agree, never seen one inside before.
Nice . . . YOU ~ ROCK ! !
Run for President 🤛
Sent you an email 👍🤛
Those hose clamps were for tightening the exhaust hose onto the header/outlet on the heater and the little rectangle with 2 round outlets is a muffler for the exit of the exhaust. It should also definitely not be just set on the floor. You need either a stone/concrete or metal plate under it. Or at least a decent sized air gap to keep it away from anything flammable.
“We’re doing alright, we’re surviving” 😂 be safe out there man!
Do u think it would stand against rain and snow all the time?
@@timonrueedi it should be rated for outdoor, if not, nothing a simple tough rubber made container with a couple holes in it can't fix.
This sounds like a good strategy, but Is it safe to pump hot brrathing air through PVC?
It's quite a bit more efficient heating already hot cabin air though. It think he just needs to lift it a bit above the floor and wrap the exhaust.
@@_e8a again if issue arises, metal flex duct will suffice
When the "S" hit the fan, I like how Mav kept his 😎 cool and figured things out! WTG!
Best videos of Mav are the ones of the original F150.
Haha magic mav turned the red vitamin water into yellow vitamin water 👌
MAV the only thing that gave me consolation and peace during your sketchy diesel heater video was knowing you came home to produce and post the segment. All kinds of ways that thing was dangerous glad you're okay. How did you get that spilled diesel out?
i would've replaced that grass
@@kristibeisecker you’d have to. Diesel smell never goes away
DITTO!
I thought the same!! 🔥🔥🔥
im having a real bad anxiety day or just a bad head space and seeing ur video really just reminded me of how ima be alright and to keep on truckin love ya bud thank u for ur videos
I'd put a hose clamp on that exhaust, seal where it exits the box and build a stand/base to prevent a fire. At minimum if you use that again
Love everything you’ve been doing with the channel. I know you do what you want, but a stealth camping video would be pretty cool to see again. I don’t know why I love those videos so much lol.
Sometimes I wish your episodes were so long I could watch all day! I know it’s alot of work though! Love all the good content!
@Storm Shadow you had an opportunity here. To write something helpful, maybe positive…instead you chose this. You chose to be this kind of person.
@Storm Shadow you sure are mean…I love his content. I do my own videos and his videos inspire me. It’s just one of my favorite channels is all. Like binging your favorite Netflix show…If this is Moaning in ecstasy to you then…we’ll…sure.
@Storm Shadow whoa you took that way too far 😂 all day as in it makes me want to go out camping myself. It’s a comfortable channel to watch. Inspiring. Makes me want to put a bed in the back of my SUV…makes me want to adventure more. MAV reminds me of my brother so no man, can’t believe that’s what you took from my comment 😂 your mind must be wild.

@@chancelor yea…weird someone would think that from what I said 😂😅 I just like camping man lol
You are a good human and I love the content keep trucking mav and if you ever wanna do a UK camping trip I might not have all the best recipes in my mind but I’ll sure as hell be your guide. Keep on trucking dude
You need a Mr. Hearer Buddy used in the van community, around 80 bucks small enough to not take a bunch of space but will warm up your space! Keep on trukin Mav!
Yo mav, you ever think about painting one of your campers with insulated paint and test to see if it has any effect to indoor temp?
Mav you might want to put some type of heat shield under the diesel heater and around like people use for wood stove. Smart way to stay warm
OK, boomer.
@@cremejockey8636 OK boomer what?
@@loritanner4478 Just ignore 4 eyes over there. He's just a troll.
@@skynikz7554 figured that. Since he can only form 2 word sentences. 😏
on installs I've seen similar heaters used for in van conversions and such they usually vent out the bottom, maybe a bit to the side, pretty sure as long as he's not trying to use it inside an enclosed space it should be good as natural air movement will keep the exhaust from building up
Dude, I’m happy you made it through the night!
Mav the sav! Only person I know who would spill a puddle of diesel and then light a fire two feet away.
Don't do that again, Mav. I'm damn serious!
Mav is a disaster waiting to happen.
Diesel doesn't flash like gas does. It's a lot safer
@@nrgzrbunny7775 These comments are hilarious. Clearly so many people dont understand that diesel and gas are not that similar..... Gas vapors ignite, diesel vapors do not. 🤣🤣
Usually it’s your knife skills that scare me to death, but you out did yourself on this one Mav. You know the drill; slow down & use your head.
I'd be really worried about the exhaust melting all the wires that are right by it. Get a stand and run the exhaust up. Just get a metal chimney style cover to keep snow/rain/whatever else from running down the exhaust.
surely there’s just less stressful ways to keep himself warm
@syk0 a wood burning camping stove would be much safer and they make tent style Chutes that a simple piece of canvas over the window could take care of. They are perfect for tiny homes and camping conversions and much cleaner burn to the environment actually more natural I should say.
Yeah those exhausts get really hot 🔥
down,,,these units I have seen ALWAYS, mount exhaust down using plates included in the kit
2 big clay flower pots and a big candle. Candle burns for hours and the clay withholds the heat and helps distribute the heat better
slightly terrifying, but at least it got the job done for you!
great video as always Mav
keep on truckin
That's the best Vitamin Water flavor. Straight fire lol
Heat tape around the exhaust, makes a big difference. If it's bare, it gets pretty hot and can melt stuff near it.
" run Mav, run. ". Stay safe…… Thanks Mav, another great video. 🙏
Hey Mav you can mount that heater outside and run a duct from the output into the truck. They put out lots of heat so you wouldn't loose much with it being outside. You could make a basket that you can put up and take down to put in the roof of the cap.
I really like your idea.
this is how an APU in a transport truck works basically
That had to have stunk to high heavens!!
oh yeah thats the spot where there was people shooting guns man ive been her for awhile now love the content
Risk catching the garage on fire or have it smell like diesel that's what truck beds are for.
TRAINWRECK BRO! You'll never get rid of that diesel smell. That's a helluva stew your making tho!👍 KEEP ON TRUCKIN!!
Raise it off the carpet then just wrap it with silver heat wrap thats close to those other wires... good luck
I look forward to these videos more after I watch every one of your videos dude, keep doing what your doing man!
If you're still on here can you please share more about heating a Cherokee with propane?
Definitely keep the heater they work great. Just set it up better. Maybe bolt it down to some 4x4 blocks. And wrap your wiring next to the exhaust. And definitely check out where that diesel came from that was on the carpet.

Idk how you make grocery shopping look fun but I’m here for it
Hey Mav, I have installed three of these diesel heaters in my Volkswagen buses over the past couple years.
What brand are they? TIA

Hey mav, best place to mount that type of heater in your vehicle would be in the front cab behind a seat and route the exhaust straight down through the floor board ina. Safe location.
