- My 20 strategies to save money at the grocery store.
Inflation and supply chain issues have put grocery prices at an all time high. The prices of many products have doubled, which has make people not be able to afford their favorite groceries. There is one way to combat these rising prices and it is through being frugal.
Frugality is the best weapon to save money at the grocery store and the good news is that all we have to do is make small changes in our lives to save money.
I keep my grocery budget under $200 a month while buying healthy and nutritious foods. In the last few years I have learned many different ways to save money that help me cut my grocery expenses without sacrificing high quality foods. In this video I share 20 grocery saving hacks that save me thousands of dollars a year on my grocery bill.
1. Don't underestimate the pennies
When you go to the grocery store set out to save money at small levels like 10 cents on a can of beans or 50 cents on a loaf of bread. All the pennies will add up at the end of the trip.
2. Understand the difference between a want and a need
A want is things that do not nourish your body like ice cream and candy. A need is something that does nourish your body like fruits. If you are on a budget, start cutting out your wants to save money.
3. Know which stores sell the cheapest stuff
Not all grocery stores have the same prices. Go to different stores to see who has the cheapest prices and shop at those stores.
4. Don't fall for packaging
Sometimes if an item is in a shiny package it could cost 4 times as much, but the only real difference is the packaging. Don't think that since something is in a nicer package it is better because it normally just means it costs more money.
5. Ditch single use items
Items like paper towels, napkins, and plastic bags are a waste of money. You do not need these items and can find reusable alternatives to save money.
6. Only grocery shop once a week
If you grocery shop multiple times a week you will spend more money on gas and buy more foods. Limit shopping to once a week.
7. Portion things correctly
Things like laundry detergent you need to measure them out correctly. You might be wasting money by using too much.
8. Use grocery store apps
Most grocery stores have apps that offer a lot of different savings. Download the grocery store apps to save money.
9. Don't go to the expensive grocery stores
Just because a store looks nice on the inside does not mean that it is better. Don't spend more money because of atmosphere.
10. Buy in bulk
Buy higher quantities of things like toilet paper to save money. When you buy a higher quantity you will spend less.
11. Buy generic brand instead of name brand
Generic brand is 20% cheaper than name brand items and the main difference is usually just the packaging.
12. Eat less meat
We consume too much meat in the United States that it is bad for our health and wallets. Eat less meat and you will save money.
13. Don't buy trimmed meat
Most people only buy boneless and skinless cuts of meat. Take a couple minuted to trim the meat yourself and you will save a lot of money.
14. Eat less desired parts of meat
Chicken breast is the most expensive cut of meat, but if you buy other cuts like the legs or thighs you will save money.
15. Buy frozen fruits and vegetables instead of fresh
Frozen produce is much cheaper than fresh because they do not need to rush it to the grocery store. If you want to be healthy on a budget choose to buy frozen instead of fresh.
16. Freeze food before it goes bad
If you cannot eat something, put it in the freezer before it goes bad and eat it later. You won't waste the food and you will save a lot of money.
17. Refrigerate fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables last a lot longer in the fridge than on the counter. Put them in the fridge so they last longer.
18. Pay with a credit card
If you have the self control to pay off the balance, credit cards offer cash back on purchases. Pay with a credit card and it will add up to hundreds of dollars a year.
19. Don't slack on the healthy foods
Don't try to save money by not buying healthy foods. You will pay more later with high medical bills. Buy healthy foods to prevent becoming unhealthy.
20. Don't have kids
Just kidding...but less mouths to feed. - Навчання та стиль
What's one way you save money at the grocery store?
i don't buy anything that's not on sale. And I buy store brand whenever possible.
app Flipp
I thought most grocery store apps/programs were about the same, but learned they're not. Had been going to the same grocery store forever (grew up going there), but started going to a different one that was closer and noticed their app would start showing me custom/additional discounts I could apply on regular foods I buy every week (including produce, breads, and other staples, not just non-staple items like some of the others). This store used to have the perception of costing a bit more (pennies/dimes more, not dollars), but since It's easy to compare prices with other stores apps it hasn't necessarily been the case.
I buy in bulk and freez and jar seal extra.
Dont go shopping when you’re hungry. Very important! Lol
Roughly £120k in my portfolio are in tech/TSLA stocks, can I get an advice on any other stocks that I can acquire to diversify my reserve across multiple markets while creating a comprehensive portfolio allocation that balances my concerns of risk aversion and returns that meet yearly inflation.
You need to hire a financial advisor to help you diversify your portfolio by including Mutual Funds, Etf's, the 11 GICS groups, inflation-indexed bonds, and stocks of companies with reliable cash flows rather than growth stocks, where prices were based on future prospective earnings.
That's correct. At first, I wasn't too pleased with my gains compared to my previous performances, I was doing so poorly, I thought I needed to diversify into better assets, so I got in touch with an investment-advisor. That same year, I pulled a net gain of £550k, which is about 10 times more than I average on...
I’ve been looking to switch to an advisor for a while now. Any help pointing me to who your advisor is?
“Angela Lynn Shilling’’ is the licensed fiduciary I use. Just research the name. You’d find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment.
I searched for her full name online, found her page, and sent an email to schedule a meeting. Hopefully, she responds soon. Thank you
In light of the ongoing global economic crisis, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize investing in diverse sources of income that are not reliant on the government. This includes exploring opportunities in stocks, gold, silver, and digital currencies. Despite the challenging economic situation, it remains a favorable time to consider these investments.
The pathway to substantial returns doesn't solely rely on stocks with significant movements. Instead, it revolves around effectively managing risk relative to reward. By appropriately sizing your positions and capitalizing on your advantage repeatedly, you can progressively work towards achieving your financial goals. This principle applies across various investment approaches, whether it be long-term investing or day trading.
Even with the right strategies and appropriate assets, investment returns can differ among investors. Recognizing the vital role of experience in investment success is crucial. Personally, I understood this significance and sought guidance from a market analyst, significantly growing my account to nearly a million. Strategically withdrawing profits just before the market correction, I'm now seizing buying opportunities once again.
@@maryHenokNft Amazing! I hope it's okay to inquire if you're still collaborating with the same fiduciary and how I can get in touch with them?
The decision on when to pick an Adviser is a very personal one. I take guidance from *Gertrude Margaret Quinto* to meet my growth goals and avoid mistakes, she's well-qualified and her page can be easily found on the net.
My needs are kind of unique and complex. I'll contact her nonetheless, and I hope I'm able to make something out of it.

A very old British saying "Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves"
People who try to hunt down pounds are in a lot better position. Babysitting pennies leaves one poor if pounds are required😠!
But there's also a saying penny wise, pound foolish 🤠
Yes that is very true because it is the pennies that build the pound.
@@NoName-jq7tj Exactly 🙂
@@TheReader19 Yes that is also true, I believe. When you operate with limited monies you have to be wise. When you have an abundance of monies thing as get out of control. Just analyse lottery winners.
I just wanna add one tip to this. Before you go grocery shopping do it after you have Eaten a meal. When you are full, You will be less likely to do impulse shopping.
And do a list of the things you actually need for cooking your meals.
This is my favorite channel, it’s like watching a younger version of my husband if he had a UA-cam channel. I’m always teasing my hubby that he could squeeze a dollar out of a dime, and I bet you can as well. I used to be a crazy spender before I married my husband but now I enjoy watching our savings and investments grow. It’s never too late to learn how to manage your money. I wish I had known what a hole I was digging for myself when I was racking up tons of debt in my 20’s. I’m 15 years from retirement and am glad that I married a frugal guy later in life who showed me how to get my financial sh** together!
Here's a tip for when you are buying berries. They are always packaged in those clear plastic containers. When you get them home, take them out and store them in mason jars and they will last longer. I don't know what the science behind this is, but I know it works.
Very true!
Because it seals it in not allow air in not causing it to rot
I have mason jars but never knew that. I'll start doing that soon. Thank you! ❤️😊
Thanks
Here's my trick for saving money at the store: I shop every Saturday, and my shopping list is for basic things we need like milk, bread, Worcestershire sauce, etc., but on that list will be nothing for weekly dinners. I plan our meals while I'm at the store, building them around what's on sale. That is a HUGE money-saver.
I do this too! We plan meals accordingly to what's on sale.
Agree completely..but I am always happy when some of my favorite dinner items are on sale!
@@wendysherbert3257 Definitely happy!
Same.
@@katherinepace7369 Me too😀
I did not expect to laugh so hard on secret number twenty. In my case, that's too late. I got three of them.
Glad I could make you laugh!
Me too! Haha 😂
Just don't over feed em. 1 tablespoon per year. Of course if they are still hungry feed em more. Buy smaller fruits or cut em up. Teach em to drink water. Enjoy they grow up fast
@@ElAgustin I laughed as well because I have three of those beings and money sponges! But I would like to have your thoughts about financial minimalism and kids. There are a lot of UA-camr channels about decluttering that are useful, exclusively made by mothers, but I am sure that your input would be different and interesting. And less gender orientated…and a little challenge for you!
LOL
Before I leave the house I always fill my water bottle and sometimes coffee container so I am never tempted to buy something in a gas station or worst... Starbucks.
"Freeze things before they go bad" . i been doing this for decades and it s acually the best money saver in the kitchen. I literally NEVER throw away any food at all, as soon as i m aware i cannot use it up before it gets old, i ll slice veggies n fruits up, sometimes pre-prepare it and freeze it.
Me too! I will cut up and freeze fruits to use in smoothies and vegetables to use in soups.
Same here!!
yes indeed people clog their fridges and goods in the back go bad money down the drain.
I bought a vacuum sealer. I vacuumed sealed cereals grains, rice, beans and pasta. When cans are bogo, I buy what I like. Usually 4. I bought a deep freeze. The best purchase I've made. I Blanche and freeze veggies when on sale or in season. I eat only poultry so I vacuum seal and freeze in small batches. I also have learned to like cold cooked food.
I love cold corn on the cob, chicken legs,
tuna fish, Mac salads, egg salads, cuts back electricity!
That's wonderful!!
I started shopping the Walmart brand for anything I can’t get in bulk. Game changer. I also went plant based two years ago….I easily save $50 per week…👍🏻👍🏻
I shop with a self-imposed deadline. I look at my list, give myself about 20min to Get In & Get Out. I take a coffee thermos along. It's still warm when I get back to the car. It's amazing what I don't even see in there, and I make a note of an item or aisle to be sure to review next visit. I also have about 4 fav stores that I visit twice/mo. Two this week and two next week for the Best in Produce and Basics.
This dude is bold! He said it: don't have kids. Seriously, he's right you can save tons of money. I decided at 15 if I got married I'd have babies, but no one asked. And yes you'll never miss what you never had!!
yes brilliant just having kids is a huge money drain and it never ends
I shop at Walmart and noticed their prices on beef and chicken in terms of cost per pound. Luckily I went to my local butcher who was able to beat the cost per pound for fresh chicken and choice & prime beef if I bought in bulk. I did that and vacuumed sealed all of it. The positives are he knows my preferred cuts of meat. We have a solid owner/customer relationship. It’s healthier, tastes better and cheaper than eating out and I am supporting a small business owner while saving $.
did you notice the squirrel populations down / just kidding i follow ahimsa.
Lolllll I just love his sense of humor!!! He has a lot of wisdom!! Made me want to be really mindful about using my laundry detergent correctly! Whole foods=Whole Pay Check!! LOL
Thanks!
Great tips but the one about not having kids might be a bridge too far. But like cars, there are plenty of good quality used kids on the market and many are available in a package deal where you get a good used wife in the bargain. Buy a used house and, presto, you have a family at a fraction of the cost.
I got my kid when he was 9. No disposable diapers to buy and his teeth were in good shape so the largest expenses were food, clothing, little league baseball fees, motorcycles, computers, summer camp fees and guitar lessons. Later on they will need a car but most are happy with you old car, leaving you free to upgrade.
As with most things, a good quality used kid is the better deal. Just maintain it properly and give it unconditional love and it will love you back.
I grocery shop once every two months. I am single and it works for me. I started doing this since the pandemic and it is the best thing that has happened to me.💃💃💃
How?
@@maineevent04 I do meal prep, buy in bulk and I do not waste food. It takes good orgazational skills and discipline.
I am with you on the needs vs wants. I believe there is a high correlation between those who complain about the high cost of groceries and the high amount of treats in their cart. I have no impulse control with treats so I never keep them in my apt. If I want a cookie or something, I have to go to the store and about 80% of the time laziness wins out.
Shhhh, don't tell people about frozen veggies, then they will be out of stock at the store 🙂. I am fan of batch cooking for 2 hours on Sunday so all I have to do is microwave a meal.
Start hoarding the frozen vegetables!
You are not just a wise man but also funny! Your videos are inspiring! Thank you! ❤️🙏
You’re hilarious & love the wisdom/knowledge you’re sharing with a generation who is just starting to understand. 🙏🏼 God Bless
Are you a Torah follower? We are, and have been searching for others!
Be sure to keep pencil and paper handy throughout the week so you will have a list to take with you at the store. So frustrating to get home from the store and realize you forgot something. Makes once a week trips to the store easier.
I always make meals in bulk and put them in separate containers, freeze them and use them as you need. So you end up with a healthy meal straight from the freezer. Also I've saved a fortune shopping once a week and have stopped buying non essentials, like biscuits and chocolate. saved money and my waist is slimmer :)
You need to put the date on the food and watch for expiry dates they're different for meats. Also be very careful to not be refreezing any ingredients or it will make you sick. This is quite tricky.
Love your uptempo way of getting us through your hacks! Frugal greetings from Germany... 🙂
Mom of 8 here! Great tips!
I was aware of all of these strategies, but had to watch the video all the way to the end because this guy is HILARIOUS!!!
I'm trying!
Great tips! I've been grocery shopping according to most of your tips for years. With inflation, and people complaining that their grocery expenses have gone up 15% in three past several months, my grocery bills have actually gone DOWN as I no longer buy meat unless I find a very good deal (at the grocery store Lidl) and I very infrequently buy "wants" instead of needs. It also helps that neither my husband or I drink alcohol.
#20 killed me 🤣🤣🤣🤣 wish I saw this 4 kids ago. Enjoying your videos👍
i don't understand why people bring kids into the world thinking they are cheap.
It's a great thing to know how to stretch money and be content with less than everyone else
First I love each of my children no matter what so I would say have kids. They are the best!!! Thank you for the nice comments about farmers! As a farmer family we work long hard hours. I appreciate you recognizing what we stand for and do. Once again thank you for the wonderful tips.
you have to be a ble to afford them ie deposit for a house, first car, wedding stuff, money is never ending. it is not about loving them it is about being able to afford them, even in hard times ie if a parent dies or lose of job
I don’t count how much I save, but how much I spend. No to eggs for $5.99. Yes to eggs for $2.99.
I grocery shop once a month. I cultivated this practice during the pandemic.
I laughed when I watched number 20. You are right! Having kids mean you have to spend lots and lots of money! I would love to live in my car to save money but it's impossible with kids!!
Same!! I’d love to have a tiny home! And or live in a van.
well said so much is impossible with kids
I like Walmart Grocery Pickup. It makes me conscious of how much I spend at the grocery store.
🤣don't have kids, I like this guy he's right sometimes I get so scared of these times with inflation and everything but then I'm like thank God it's just me and I'm childless ... I would be a wreck worrying about my children if I had any 😅😬
Yeah but living alone is very expensive. I don't have kids and need to share to keep expenses down. It's tricky.
Kids are a blessing and when you have them you become much more creative.
but not everyone can afford them even when they get older parents have to pay for their first cars, house deposits, weddings etc, it is endless expense and drain on purse. @@Ozarkmountainoutback1
i am childree by choice and happy and it is such a relief not to have any kids,
@@beaulieuc8910 it may be now but consider when you are 80 and need help. Being alone is a lonely prospect
The number 20 is absolutely true!! Lol I have one kid and geeez the amount of food that little thing eats is incredible!! 😂 but seriously it's a good advice to have fewer kids
I love this guy and his sense of humor
Kids? Too late for me too, but they are truly great, wouldn't have it any other way. Great tips, thank you. 🌻
#7 got me. Love your vibe. Ty for your vids.
Meal planning! It's one of the best things I've ever done, no more scrounging around trying to figure out what is for dinner and I know the night before what needs to come out of the freezer. We've cut way down on the amount of food that gets thrown away. Every six months we do an eat down of everything that is in the freezer and pantry, sometimes it yields interesting meals, but that way I know nothing is wasted due to it going bad.
I enjoyed this video and thank you for all the tips!
I love your message, Austin ❤️🇦🇺
You are spot on with your hacks. The supermarkets here are wise to the weekly shopper with a list. They are now randomly discounting staples to encourage more frequent trips. The up side is you can find great bargains and can stock up. The downside is you are tempted to buy what is not needed. PS saving 60% of income is a great goal. Mind you, the higher the income the easier it is to achieve. On minimum wage essential living costs eat it all up, leaving nothing or barely nothing to save.
$1.00 @ a time.
Thanks for the tips. Subscribed.
Omg you’re hilarious and really on point with the tips. Thanks
Very wise & honest, thank you & I hope you continue with more videos 😎
Brilliant video and delivery. Kept me watching and laughing. I am learning some tips, thanks☆
I got an American Express cash preferred card back in 2016. It has 6% cash back at grocery stores and 3% back at gas stations. I have saved thousands!
Love this! Especially the 20. And everything before that. Please keep making the videos, these are the best!

I like the meal planning method for a month. I’m going to try it; looks great on paper! I can see how much less of planning, shopping, and preparing already. I can add some great meals!

Everything you are saying is spot on...and especially #9 OMG!!!!!!!!!!
You are good men....

Super hacks! Thank you, Austin
Thank you!
Nice tips 👍 I would add meal planing and shopping lists to the top 3 and switching to plant based diet. I’m also not the big fan of “buying frozen instead of fresh whenever you can” as this comes with cost to the environment (plastic packaging). Lets not be to short sighted and consider how our choices affect not only our wallets but also other species and planet 🙌
California is going to require thermo plastic packaging to be partially 20-30% recycled plastic in the next five years. A great start for reducing plastics in the trash stream. Also the thin filmy produce bags in stores must be compostable or recycled plastics same time frame. Stores already do not give out the plastic shopping sacks like they did for free years ago. Now paper, boxes, or reusable bags only.
I eat exactly the same meals every week. It’s also a time saver, just like wearing black everyday. Eheheh I also have reusable bags for fresh foods like fruits and vegetables. They are made of plastic but they last a lifetime.
Keep plastic bags that had say carrots in them. Rinse with soapy water. Reuse. Just add a date. Pictures of carrots on the bag already. I get flex bags, reuse and reuse, Wash dry reuse
great stuff 💚
So nice to find *Actually* frugal stuff!
Simple hacks but so true, your the second influencer I hear that mentions saving pennies. 10 cents 5 cents may not seem like a lot but if you over draft your back account over a few cents your looking at 40 dollar penalty.
Very intense but good tips. I think the way the grocery store stores fresh produce usually works best for me, but everyone is different. 😊
Love the last tip!!!✌️😁😜😂
Austin that was a good video. What would have made it great, is menu planning using produce in season and things on sale.
Once again a great video!!!!
Thanks!!
Thank you
