    Let me share with you something I wish I knew before I went to my recruiter.
    1. Know exactly what you want in terms of rate in the Navy.
    2. At the end of the day you have the ultimate decision making power. Get EXACTLY what you want.
    3. Value your time more than your recruiter. You are potentially signing 4-6 years of your life. Get everything squared away. Double check your recruiter they are human too.

    "I valued my recruiters time way too much," I think I almost started to do the same, but I had to realize I couldn't join on his terms and his enthusiasm. I needed to pause, breathe, and really understand why I would want to enlist. I am also blessed to have one of his senior officers at his office who left a different impression on me altogether. When they can help change your perspective on life, and not just the military, I value their insight more. I just need to not rush into this. Also thanks for highlighting the need for me to have a clear view of what I want, and how to establish that in the beginning. Thanks!

      Hey Dealio, thank you for the insightful comment.
      Absolutely, at the end of the day it's your next 4+ years you're sacrificing. Sacrificing, health, family, love, wealth, and etc. Make careful decisions.

      PR
      BM
      AO
      ABH
      ABF
      ABE
      for sure not doing BM was told to choose top five and I'm left with those other five, still have to go to MEPS and see if I qualify for the job, but you think those rates are good for me to do during time in service?

      Lol his point was don’t let a recruiter convince you to not retake the asvab and settle for something you don’t want, recruiter have to me a quota so to them I doesn’t matter what score you get as long as they can get you through the process fast enough to meet a goal. Very simple.

    Correct the recruiter is working for you, not the other way around. Most are young who want to enlist. Some would bring their fathers with them, which at the time I thought it was dumb. It was not, the recruiter would be more straight up and respect the enlistee much more. Remember, they're basically salespeople, that's it!

    You're right and completely agree with you. Actually, I took the ASVAB four times first from home where I got 51 AFQT scores or something like that, then on the base when I got 25. After that, I off my Facebook and all social networks and decided to study hard. After the month I got 61 and because there was big contrast more than 20 scores they asked me to take again whole ASVAB test. I always wanted to be in Navy a Dental Assistance because my final goal is to become a General Dentist, so, I guess this is a good start from Navy. I knew in advance how many scores and in which subject I needed to get this job. Actually, I researched many things before I met my recruiter. He is really great guy and he always helps me with many things, so he knows and sees that I have language barrier, but remember recruiters also want to ship you as fast as possible and when he asked me about what kind of job I wanted in the Navy, I told him DA and nothing than DA. He was a little bit confused why I wanted only DA. I explained him and said that I knew that scores what I got were enough (DA and DT are almost same thing - www.thebalance.com/dental-technician-3345803) ASVAB Scores Needed for Navy Jobs: www.militaryspot.com/navy/asvab-scores-needed-for-navy-jobs
    So, if you know more than recruiter expect from you, you will get respect from then trust me and there is a low chance recruiter lie you or expedite to ship you fast...
    Good luck guys!

    You should always value your recruiter's time. At the end of the day, you need the military more than the military needs you. That is why you are trying to join in the first place. Joining the military is just like applying for a job. Walking into a recruiting office and demanding this and that is like going into a job interview and telling your future boss that you will only work if you get this certain position. There are always other people who wants to join. Don't act like you are doing the military a favor by joining. The military is actually doing you a favor by letting you join.

    Hi Yoon, I'm a Recruiter and I see your point of view but your Recruiter has nothing to do with job selection except to provide guidance. The reality is you get to pick a job at MEPS with a Classifier based on availability of the job and one you qualify for under the jobs mental,moral and physical requirements. My job is help applicants get through the process and assist your family during your transition.Seldom do Navy recruiters get the opportunity to have an impact on specific job requests. The only specific job incentives for Recruiters are Nuclear Field acquisitions and Navy Challenge Program candidates. All other jobs have no incentive for us. As a Recruiter going back to the Fleet in 10 Months I feel confident in meeting any of the Sailors I helped put in the Navy. Good Luck in Real Estate but take a look at government jobs dealing with logistics. Take care.

My recommendation is not to be a nuke, mainly because of the 6 year contract. If i could go back knowing what I know now I would be a CT or a conventional MM or EM. I could have been out of the navy already if I wasnt a nuke. if you do joins as a nuke and you want to sub vol, just wait to do it. You can sub vol as late as prototype but you cant un-sub vol so if just wait. Submarines suck, nuke school sucks, Groton Connecticut sucks, being a nuke sucks.

    Hey, just visited my recruiter a few days ago took the EST got a 83. He said I would be looking at around an 85-87 ASVAB. I'm not sure about enlisting, but I just graduated high school, I got to a community college right now. My grades in high school were abysmal and I basically scraped by doing the bare minimum, not because I was lazy but I had very few interests with school. i was very proficient with English and mathematics. I took calculus my senior year, AP English 12, and AP Physics. Those classes and geometry were my only interests and the only classes I did well in (besides band lol). Currently doing the exact same thing in community college and don't really see a future here because, well, i'm not really doing shit. I work as a technician at valvoline and take morning classes that I frankly, just show up to. I really feel like my future is falling apart and I need some sort of structure in my life. The thing is I don't want to join the military as enlisted, but i'm not close to a bachelor's degree or an associates for that matter. My whole life people have told me I just need to apply myself. Anyways what I need your advice with is as follows: My parents will not back me one bit if I join the Navy or any branch of the military for that matter. my dad told me explicitly he would never talk to me again. My issue is that I don't really see a future here and i'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. You may, or may not have gone through something similar but I really do need help making this decision.

    • @MrYoonKim
      @MrYoonKim  7 років тому +2

      Hey man, to some degree i understand the situation you are in. Not having the support from family is tuff.
      If i was in your situation with what I know now I can do either one of two things.
      1. Get the degree then enlist as officer, live extremely frugal and save within 5 years as commissioned anywhere from 50-90k or more which is realistic. Your parents might not like the decision of going military but they wouldn't argue with a huge capital to start your life in the right direction. (I hope)
      2. Go enlisted for 4-6 years (depends on your rate) lets say 5 like me. While you're in get your degree or close to finish (so your parents will somewhat not be fully upset with you) and while you're in again, live frugal and save most of your money. 40-50k As enlisted is realistic.
      At the end of the day If i was in your position, trying the military route is not at all a bad thing. Being in the military as a LS i get to process/ order millions of dollars of material and parts. Value like this can't be easily compared to someone who graduates college and is looking for a job. Even then without good connections you can't get a great job such as stuff you will see and experiecne in the military.
      If you're unsure of what you want to do in the long term I would recommend joining the military is figuring it out.
      Hope this helped. Yoon.

      hiomf You can join the Navy reserves which will allow you to WAY more time at home if you don’t want to be dedicated to living on a military base for 4(or however many years you decided to be in the Navy) years. They will tell you when you’re needed. As for your parents, it’s you life in the end. @ arielartista. I'm a retired Career Recruiter. The Navy does not roll like that. We may try to encourage you to take what is available, but we do not misrepresent what is available. If you are completely locked on MC, then do not join. However, there are other ways to make your dream of videography/photography work with the benefits the World's finest Navy has to offer. Keep all of that in mind. Do you have the money to go to school for that right now? In four years, you can.

I've come to know many people who were able to escape the hands they were dealt into more favorable outcomes which challenges the traditional way of the military. In no way is this a challenge to you, but just a conversation.

    My son went to MEPS and got a lower score on asvab compared to the one he took with recruiters. He ended up signing even though it's not for ANYTHING close to what recruiter told him. Recruiter then said he can try his best to get my son a job he wants and talked about pact. How can my son change this? He wanted seal, swcc, or eod and his score with asvab in office was good enough, but not at MEPS. I'm afraid my son was blindsided.

    • @MrYoonKim
      @MrYoonKim  4 роки тому

      The ASVAB taken with the recruiter is an unofficial one to help the recruiter get a sense of what jobs may be available for your son. PACT is usually given to sailors who score low on the official ASVAB at MEPS. No matter how well the recruiter might sell your son PACT, i highly do not recommend it. The way you could make the best of the situation is to retake the ASVAB, im not familiar with the exact rules but i believe you are eligie to retake one 30 days after the initial test.

    • @MrYoonKim
      @MrYoonKim  4 роки тому

      The recruiter should've been able to tell from the mock ASVAB that your son would not qualify for what he wants since they offered PACT. I personally believe he was blindsided, if your son did score high but missed it by few they should've recommended him to retake it a month later.

    • @MrYoonKim
      @MrYoonKim  4 роки тому

      Best course of action i would say.
      Do whatever it takes to retake the ASVAB and score high enough. If you need time, request to delay shipout date.
      I personally also feel that it may be too late.

      I'm a little uncomfortable with my recruiters (plural), they left and right ask me to withhold information on the forms I'm filling out and only talk about the wonders of joining the navy. I got a 96 on the ASVAB and I'm thinking about giving up my small business and go to bootcamp in July, the only thing that makes me think twice are my pets. I don't know if I could find someone to look after them for however long it takes before I can be reunited with them. It's becoming an emotional decision now and I'm not sure if I can pull the plug on my current life. Anywho...
      My advice is to go in with plenty of information so you can pick their brains, right now I'm dealing with an electrician who isn't too respectful of my time and barely speaks English and an HVAC guy who calls himself an "engineer".

    My recruiter is feeding me the jobs that are always open so he can fill his quota. I have 8 jobs listed.... 8! That is flexible. He disregarded all my jobs and told me he "ideally" wants me in the DEP for only 3-4 months. When I know and even asked him what is the maximum amount of time I can wait for my job to open. He said technically 12 months. He went no further and continued to tell me bullshit with his lousy eye contact. I am going to see another recruiter next week.... Do you have any tips/advice if by some chance she gives me the same bullshit... Because I know if I wait up to a year... The job that I want will open. It just seems that the recruiter is acting like if I don't take the jobs he says to take. I won't get in. Thanks 🙏

    • @mikeflores139
      @mikeflores139 6 років тому

      There's always a chance that something can happen in that time. Recruiters don't have "quotas" They are under pressure to find and process the best and most able individuals while also keeping those people's goals in mind.
      Their Leaders and supervisors are the checks and balances. Making sure that the time in the pool is efficient and the medical and recruiter time is used to the fullest. It always blows my mind how people think they can demand anything of the prospective employer. Try going to a corporate entity demanding a position and see how that works out for you. No matter what service you choose there are many opportunities to grow your resume and work toward your goals. If you fact check a recruiter and they were not being honest then by all means go talk to a different one or their next higher leader.
      At the end of the day you either have to decide to serve and compromise, or risk losing out on your time and effort and possibly being denied because of some unforeseen event. Not to mention that the chosen service already invested in you by sending you to test and medical in some cases. So your recruiter is just trying to be efficient. Why spend more money, resources, and time on someone who is not going to fully commit. Also the slots that are available are what they can put people into, that's what positions are open and in demand of course.
