For me, the vocalist, songwriter, musician and producer has won the battle.

Careless whisper is the better song .Like a virgin wasn't Madonna's finest nor was it written,by Madonna..
However Madonna later was the musician, songwriter, producer and can vocalise ,emote and tell a story ..and never gets the credit she deserves for the vast majority of her catalogue ,not necessarily the singles..She comes into her own when it's her story .Live To Tell would have been a better comparative and example of this but George Michael was in a league of his own .Careless whisper is easily the better song here .
A lot of his early material was as shit as Like A Virgin though and he would have conceded that ...these two songs are not in the same league .

To me, Careless Whisper with Crazy For You would have been good

Madonna is more of a pop song to dance to but George, That's another thing altogether. George's music is always something to really listen to. Whether it be fast or slow, his music always meant a lot of things at any given time. People fell in love with this song. Got married to his songs & yes, brought babies into this world. No one could ever even come to having his voice. As for the instrumental, again he would come up with exciting combos. George is timeless, real, heartfelt, & love, pure love. Believe me & others when we say George has been a blessing to the world! Maybe not in these same words but It's obvious how much he has been loved & still is forever locked in our hearts. Just my two cents worth, out of more than I can count. It keeps on growing!🕯😇💖

Morning Shawn & Gina, had both of the artists on vinyl in the 80s and loved both, but George Michael wins this battle. It shows his versatility and extreme talent. Have a great evening @Reactions to the Classics 😊 Trace K 🇦🇺

Hands down, the amazing George Michael wins everyday, all day long. I realize the song is slow but that voice and the instrumentation are flawless. No contest.

These could have been any songs in their catalogues and Madonna loses every time.

Hola Gina! Long time no see! Guessing this is 1984 battle? Anyway, gotta vote for Careless Whisper
Actually prefer Weird Al's parody Like A Surgeon 😃

I hadn't heard Like a Virgin in decades, but thought of it as one of a tiny handful of Madonna songs I like (Like a Prayer is the only one I Love) but was kind of shocked at how badly dated the production was - there is a great song underneath all that, but Careless Whisper wins it for me on all fronts really.

Here’s a fun fact I’m not sure you know or not, but both artist despised those songs. George never liked Careless whisper and couldn’t understand why it was a hit. Madonna loathed like a virgin and hates performing it along with Material girl- Both were omitted from her recent Greatest hits tour

Without a doubt, no question George won. It would’ve been better to compare 2 ballads or 2 upbeats. George was uber talented not only ,writing, composing producing arranging all of his music, and nobody compares to that beautiful, velvety, silky voice that he processes. George was the full package and very few artists compared to him.

Actually those are the most simplistic battles. There is much more to music than ballads or upbeats. Do you prefer vocals? Melody? arrangement? songwriting? etc. AND remember this is simply a battle of super popular songs from 1984.

Even Madonna hates Like A Virgin...well, technically GM was also not fond of this song, he thought A Different Corner, the other single he released while with Andrew was superior. Either way, this is his regardless. Not much will beat him in my heart, not even the only other "idol" I had, Madonna.

Ya I don't ever put too much weight into what artists think of their own material. Lennon being the most famous example of hating almost everything he did with The Beatles. Appreciate you watching!
