This is not a music video. This is not a movie. This is the Mona Lisa of music. Perfection. Masterpiece. NO ONE ANYWHERE will EVER be able to match THIS and it came out in 1982!! I saw this when I was 6 and I was born in '85.
December 1983. The album was released in November 1982. Which seems unusual to create that lengthy music video for an album that had been out for nearly a year, but if my memory serves me correctly, it was one of the biggest selling albums and did dominated the charts for a considerable amount of time.

I was really little, but I remember there was a special release of the video and the whole family sat down to watch it on TV. My older sisters were so excited, so even though I really had no idea what was happening I remember the moment in time so well.
I saw this for the first time a few days after MJ died.
My wife showed me this, Billie Jean, and the Motown25 Billie Jean live performance. First time hearing MJ.
You can’t have any idea what a cultural phenomenon this was when it came out in the 80’s. I still remember exactly where I was when it premiered on MTV and it was as big as any motion picture. The beginning sequence was inspired by Jackson’s fascination with the special effects in An American Werewolf In London. Rick Baker actually did the effects for the video as well. The dance sequence is certainly one of the most iconic- if not THE most iconic- in music videos. We truly hadn’t seen anything like Thriller, and we were BLOWN AWAY.
I just suggested they watch him sing “Who’s Loving You” on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969. I said, “It will blow you away,” and then I read your comment where you said you were “BLOWN AWAY” by the Thriller video. That pretty much describes his whole career. He certainly was one of a kind.

That is Vincent Price providing the rap. Probably one of the most iconic Horror actors of all time.
Most defiantly. His voice is so unique and he was a great actor. Vincent Price's voice is easy to recognize any time, be it on TV, Radio or in a music or non music video.
and Michael Jackson never paid him, In 1992 Price revealed in a interview that he was suing MJ (along with Thriller director John Landis), "he din't even answer my calls" Sad, Vincent Price deserved way more respect, he was a true legend.

@@66ixx it may have depended on where you lived. Also, a good portion of those jackets were not "official" so who knows what the sales were? All I know is I lived in that time, and for one shining moment, whenever you went somewhere with a lot of people (like a mall) you saw a few of those jackets being worn out and about.

You guys have no idea. This song and video was HUGE when it came out. It was a massive event when the video was released. From then on, every time Michael dropped a video, it was like a TV special presentation. It was must watch. Like the Super Bowl or something. What a great song too. That groove is sick.

That zombie dance still stands up as the best choreography and dancing that’s ever been in a music video. All the other dancers who are undoubtedly all highly trained, still look clunky next to MJ. Genius, utter genius.

I noticed that the first day i watched the video. I was actually surprised to find out they were trained dancers. They were all trained the same steps and ONLY MICHAEL executed them FLAWLESSLY. Amazing entertainer!
Thats because all these dancers are dressed in zombie costumes which causes limitation in movement unlike MJ. Also does the stiffness add to the fact they are zombies duh.

Thriller is the greatest music video ever made. Period. Young people will never comprehend the significance of Thriller -- the album. I was a teen when it came out and it was everywhere -- on TV, MTV, and on constant rotation on the radio. Back when people actually bought vinyl, cassettes, and CDs. Physical media, not an MP3 or a stream. The album didn't go away for almost a full year. It was like Beatlemania 20 years prior. There's no equivalent today. You'd practically have to combine 20 Taylor Swifts to match that level of EPIC that Thriller amounted to. Not to mention Michael was 24 when he made Thriller. 24! What were you doing at 24? You understand the level of genius it takes to create the biggest selling album of all time? No one can. It might not happen again for another 100 years.

I'm forty six and I've never seen Casablanca nor Gone with the Wind. I've only seen part of the Wizard of Oz as a kid on TV and I don't even remember what it was about. I love many Elvis songs, but I have never seen a single Elvis movie. It's depressing to think that the things we thought were seismically important will fade into history and at some point only the "weird" people who go out of their way to discover the amazing talents of the past will know about them.

I read his book Moonwalk and he said his label didn't have budget to make another short film after Billie Jean. So, he used his own money to make Thriller and Beat It short films. I admire how he believed in his own vision and made it massive all around the world. He's once in a lifetime musician and performer. The bullies like media and their followers will never success to make me hate him.

This was first shown in the UK in 1983. The whole of the UK was stunned that a music video could be like a movie. MJ was a real pioneer.
I do recall that they had to show it after midnight, not after the 9pm watershed. Just about everyone stayed up to watch it. Incredible.

And in the absolute center of it was this insanely talented and fragile man and his world class production team! It was a perfect combo of when the most talented musician of the century rose to fame at JUST the right moment in time! The only other musicians of the last century to experience anything like it was Elvis and The Beatles!

The dance specifically came from the video. When this was released it was a major cultural impact. It won numerous awards, being the 7th song from the album it was released well after the initial release of the album. When the video was released sales of the album doubled. Yeah, I don't recall MJ doing this dance or parts of it during his live shows. If he did, the audience already knew the dance from this video. So I think everyone that imagines in their head MJ doing this dance, they are imagining all the zombies dancing with him.

Always thought it was a brilliant idea for MJ to have Vincent Price do the spoken part of Thriller as he was one of the kings of the thriller movies (psychological horror films). Vincent Price was a stage/radio/film/TV actor whose career spanned almost 60 years from 1935 to his death in 1993. His creepy laugh is iconic.
Don't forget the time he kidnapped the Brady boys. 😄
And he had Ola Ray (A Playboy Playmate) play his girlfriend.

My ex-wife was a fan when I met her in the late 70's. I was already familiar with works beyond the typical top 40 Jackson 5 stuff everyone knew before MJ went off like many great artists. He fame was only matched by his eccentricities.
He was in the music scene since 1969 as a member of the Jackson 5, but Thriller is what turned him into the biggest star in the world.

I remember when this video premiered on MTV. I got to school the next day, and I dare say there wasn't a single kid who hadn't watched it. Such an iconic moment in MTV's history and for music in general. A huge nod has to go to the movie 'An American Werewolf in London' for inspiring Michael Jackson to reach out to director John Landis to help create this music video.

I remember when this debuted. I was around 13 and working at a Chinese restaurant... they had a TV in the dining room. We were all SPEECHLESS ... then everyone just clapped for about 5 minutes after it was over. Amazing time to be alive.

I know y’all are enjoying the novelty of this video, but I don’t think you can really understand the impact this video had on the music industry. It was the first of its kind and it was revolutionary. I can still remember the watching it for the first time in the eighties. It’s hard in this day and age to understand how incredible it actually was.

this was a legendary idea. INSTEAD OF A NORMAL MUSIC VIDEO, MICHAEL BASICALLY HIRED THE LEGENDARY DIRECTOR AND CREW OF AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, TO CREATE WHAT BECAME AN EPIC EVENT. AFTER IT PREMIERED ON MTV, THE ONLY WAY TO SEE IT WAS TO PURCHASE THE VHS TAPE WHICH I STOOD IN LINE FOR AND PAID $100.00. IT WAS THE MUSIC VIDEO THEN THE MAKING OF.
When this came out it was so far ahead of its time. A 13 minute video was unheard of. And how about the back up dancers oh my God. And of course Vincent Price with the narration. There was nothing like this ever before and hasn't been ever since. . Simply genius.

MJ was a World Wide Phenomenon. Even, living in Mexico as a Kid saw his videos, dances and listen to almost all of his music.
"The dance" came specifically from this video and nowhere else. Iconic, of course.
And Vincent Price doesn't get enough kudos for this. He was excellent. I was around for the hype before the video and the actual video when it first came out. Still unbelievable! RIP MJ
During the MTV music video era an announcement would be made that a new Michael Jackson music video would be unveiled soon. "Thriller" was much anticipated and Michael was the one that changed music videos such as 'Thriller" directed by John Landis and was essentially a short movie. What was nice was that it was pure wonderful music and entertainment by the legendary and highly talented Jackson without the sex and violence in music videos made my groups later.
Like so many others have commented: it is impossible to overstate* the impact of this moment in the world’s musical history. EVERYONE had to bow down to the significance of this man’s contributions; regardless of what they thought, (or currently think) about him, or…his music.
People have been doing this dance at weddings Halloween partys, , My granddaughters were in a batton twirling contest and dressed and did Thriller, they won at the Ohio State Fair ❤

What amazes me about Michael as a performer is how he made it looks so effortless. He was doing this video with actual dancers. When I say that, mean people who did dancing as a profession. Broadway performers, Solid Gold dancers, choreographers... all kinds of people who STUDIED dance. And Michael (a SINGER) just has to see a choreographer do the dance, and he does it.
Dancers loved and respected Michael. Some of them got into dance because of him. Michael was a singer, but always wanted to be seen and respected also as a dancer.
Helps he had been dancing since he was 5 years old. Some people just have natural talent, no training required.
+runninmom I'm quite sure that it's the other way round. Michael Jackson created the dance (it's his tipical moves) and the group had to learn it from him.
I believe MJ studied and worked on his dancing far more than he worked on his singing.
Also keep in mind he went through a whole period where lip synced most of his concert performances in order to be able to keep his dance numbers complex and top notch.

What’s even crazier, is the fact that just before they started shooting the back track sound was malfunctioning so Michael actually had to sing the song live so it’s physically him singing the song and dancing at the same time
He had also been studying dance intensively since early childhood. There are interviews of him at seven or eight saying he like James Brown's dancing and I'm sure he always had his eye on other artists and took and adapted what he liked of their moves for himself.
I can't help but cry a little when I see something from MJ. Makes me think of such a talent being lost. Amazing showman and musical creative.
You never saw Thriller??? It's a classic! The dance has been learned from the video, Michael never danced it in concert, etc. When this long video came out, it was shown on MTV on a special broadcast. Millions of people tuned in. The first long video ever made. A true classic that will always be pure Michael (before he got weird with the plastic surgery).
Micheal is the single reason why music videos are part of the industry today. He was constantly innovating and stretching the possibilities. He was always entertaining and always made good music. You really should listen to more of his old stuff. Its sad younger people think Michael was a joke because he truly was a cultural icon.
And oddly enough, Weird Al as well. MTV had just started and no one really knew what they were doing, so Michael Jackson and Weird Al were just _trying_ things and innovating. And in doing so they defined what a music video could be. _Thriller_ was super expensive for the time, but everyone was so dedicated that it turned out to be something amazing.
Well, Michael certainly took music videos to another level....but he didn't actually invent them! Ever heard of an iconic Australian music show called Countdown? It started in 1973 and was full of locally made music video clips.....years before MTV or Michael Jackson's solo career ever happened....so let's not go overboard.

No one said he invented music videos. He _innovated_ them. Look at music videos from the late 70s and 80s, they have nothing to do with the song, or they're just the performers playing or singing it. MJ set an example of what a music video _could_ be. Not that there was anything really wrong with music videos beforehand, but we certainly got much more varied ones after!

Vincent Price did the narration at the end and the laugh. He was in so many old horror movies. His voice was chilling. Part of the aura of the whole song.

@@CB-xr1eg Not in the video. They restructured the entire song for the music video, the verses, the chorus, etc. The original song on the album has all of Price’s narration at the end. The video splits it up into sections.
I can barely remember when Thriller was released because i was like 4, but i remember the impact it had throughout that decade as a child and long after that. I remember having it recorded on a white cassette tape and freaking out with Vincent Price's voice lol, it was such a cultural event and the crowning moment of Michael Jackson as the King of Pop. This year will mark the 15th anniversary of Michael's death, i'll never forget every detail of that day or the fact that Farrah Fawcett from Charlie's Angels the iconic TV show from the 70's died on the same day and it was almost completely overshadowed. It's bittersweet that there's already a generation missing out on Michael Jackson's genius, but i know younger fans of Michael even within my own family. "Thriller" is a brilliant song and album, and the video is like a time capsule for many of us to an awesome time when the King of Pop absolutely rocked the world. Thank you for this reaction.
This song/video was made before I was born...found it amazing and I still find it so amazing to watch ..the choreography was top notch.... Michael was the ultimate performer, his videos were done well...we still don't have a performer like him today...he set the standard so high that everything else looks like imitation...he was way too ahead of his time
This is probably the best-selling single in history. There is NO current artist who faintly compares to Michael Jackson's level of fame. You simply can't have any idea. That phenomenon died the moment pop became only for 13 year-olds. His demographics were unheard of. Everybody between 2 and 80 knew who he was. This was a real "cultural reset".

Oh come on! Best selling single? the single barely hit the top 5, the ambitious video din't help much. BTW don't lie, His demographics were terrible, Thriller was all his got, by 1985 the unreleased songs album Farewell My Summer Love was a failure and in 1987 Bad the single broke the record for fasted #1 song to leave the top 40 charts (never before seen according to Billboard) and Bad album sales were disappointing, plus MJ never won a musical Grammy again after Thriller, ever!!!
40 years after this musical phenomenon and incredible video, I still think that there is no other artist who surpasses MJ. The quality of this video and all the ones MJ made are unique and many artists were inspired by his songs and dances. I always say that Thriller represented a before and after in music videos.
Arguably the greatest music video ever made. No one had pretty much done a short film on MTV. It was a world premiere on tv and most households around the country were tuned in. And when most people dance the dance they do envision this video with Michael surrounded by zombies.
The world came to a standstill when this video debuted and it made that Christmas very strange (it debuted in early December).

The "scary music" was directed, arranged, and produced by Elmer Bernstein, a top orchestra leader who wrote the music for some of Hollywood's most noteworthy movies, such as The Ten Commandments, The Great and The Magnificent Seven--he was a multiple Oscar and Grammy winner. The spoken parts were done by veteran actor Vincent Price, who had starred in a numerous of top Hollywood horror and "thriller" films, and--finally--the song and album were produced by Quincy Jones, who was entering into his fourth decade as a jazz musician, movie and TV score writer and arranger, and music producer--Quincy Jones remains today one of the most prolific music writers and producers of all time, being nominated for 80 and winning 28 Grammy Awards.

i was born in 1992 and i remember my mother having the VHS tape of MTV the making of thriller (BTS) with the music video. So I grew up being very aware of the thriller dance due to watching the music video a lot . Its so iconic and it makes me appreciate the way MJ did music videos (its a lost art )

The idea for the 'Thriller' video came from Michael Jackson himself, in order to keep the album scoring high in the hit lists. After seeing 'An American Werewolf' in London he contacted film director John Landis and asked him to turn Jackson into a monster. The Thriller video was considered groundbreaking because
the video sealed MTV's position as a major cultural force, helped disassemble racial barriers for black artists, revolutionized music video production, popularized making-of documentaries, and drove rentals and sales of VHS tapes. In the 80s MTV showed nothing but music videos back in the day. That’s how it started out and that’s why you see long versions almost like a movie that goes with some of the most popular songs from back then. Music videos at the time were a huge deal then but that all changed Later on with the Internet and social media.
They did a documentary on Thriller, it was very informative. Personally I loved that they got Vincent Price to do the narrative. Anyone who saw some of his movies would know his voice immediately, hehe. Oh and they dance scene was designed with the idea of zombies being somewhat stiff in their movements.

As an 80's kid, I can assure you that this video is where we all learned the Thriller dance, lol. It was not just a music video, this was a mini-movie and MJ was the top in those days. Once this video premiered, everyone had to do the dance! On a side note, if I remember correctly from seeing a 'behind-the-scenes' of the making of the video, that was MJ as the werewolf. Thriller is still currently the #1 selling album EVER! Yes that was actually him in the Cat mask. The concept of the video came from the movie American Warewolf in London. You should watch The Making of Thriller, it tells you about everything you could possibly want to know! And yes, this is where the dance everyone does around Halloween came from!
I saw the European Premiere of the Thriller video at a cinema in London on Nov 26th, a few days before it was shown on MTV. Now the effect of watching the Thriller video on the big screen is massive, compared to seeing it on TV. The whole audience went nuts and the horror scenes were more effective. We were then asked by the head of Epic Records if we would like to watch the video again and the audience screamed. Watching the video again especially with the dance routines, you knew that you watching magic, which would stand the test of time and an artist at the peak of their creativity.
I can't speak for anyone younger than me, but when it came out, this video was HUGE. It was played nearly constantly on MTV. So yeah, basically ALL of your GenX viewers like me have seen this video and that is where WE know that dance from, not from any modern concert footage of his. I think of this song/dance, I'm thinking zombies...

I'm 63... when this came out I was already hard into Floyd, stones, zeppelin... etc... so I wasn't really into anything 'Jackson"... but... always a BUT.....
My two young daughters were totally into him, and when "The Jackson's Victory Tour" announced a stop a mere 8 hours away, of course they begged me to go... they were like 9 and 10 years old.

Whenever we did the Thriller dance, we all knew we were being/imitating zombies. We all learned the dance from the video, so our first reference to the dance was the zombies doing it. But, yes, it is hard to put into words how big the Thriller album was. No album before or since had such immediate, world-wide public impact. We were also at the peak of MTV, so everyone waited impatiently for his new videos to come out. There was a big todo about the release of the Thriller video (its first premiere on MTV). Friends got together to have watch parties. I was 13 at the time and with about 10-15 friends to watch the video together when it premiered. I mean, there may have been as many people watching that premiere as a Super Bowl. And yes, videos had been getting more and more elaborate as MTV became more and more popular...and Thriller took it to the extreme/pinnacle, creating a mini-movie. The video was directed by John Landis, who directed such movies as Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places, and of course the 1981 film An American Werewolf in London (that had ground-breaking practical effects for the transition of the main character into a werewolf). The narration is of course by the actor Vincent Price, who was well known for starring in horror/murder movies (among other films). The song was written as a bit of an homage to those types of older Hollywood thrillers (monster movies, 50/60s sci-fi, macabre/creepy films, etc.).
Everybody and their brother watched THRILLER when it premiered on M-TV. There was nothing like this video before it. MTV advertises it for weeks before the premiere. The voice in the video was Vincent Price.
He was a huge huge star in black and white macabre movies of the 40s 50s and 60s.
I was 20 years old when this first hit MTV. It was played every hour for WEEKS. MJ was the FIRST black artist to show up on MTV on a heavy rotation due to this album with Billie Jean. MJ started a revolution for black artists getting their music and video's out to the public.
There is a “Making of Thriller”, find it and watch it. MJ redefined the singer/songwriter. Michael Jackson was just a few years older than me. I grew up as he did. I have to say, it was a wild ride.
I had the VHS copy of the making of Thriller with the choreo, the makeup and special effects, behind the scenes, etc. I was obsessed with it! Used to dance in the mirror to MJ songs. It was a time to be alive!
We learned the dance from this video, with the monsters. The dance was created only for this video and debuted in this music video. The album had already been released prior to the video debut and had sold millions of copies but when this music video premiered, it alone doubled the record sales and pushed it into the best selling record of all time. Every news station, radio station and talk show was talking about it the next day. I bought a magazine the was specifically made to review the song and the video. That was the only subject through the publication. The song/video launched MJ into the stratosphere!

How could you have never seen the video that changed videos forever? The only videos that topped this one is...Other Michael Jackson videos! Whenever Michael came out with a new video, it was an event in my house. I got to stay up pass my bedtime. This video was groundbreaking.

Yeah, absolutely everyone had the Thriller album. I didn't consider myself a huge MJ fan, and was more of a metal head at the time, but I still had this album. Now days, I hardly ever listen to 80's metal, but still listen to this album.
This is the music video that changed the music video concept forever…it was the first music video that went beyond just showcasing the song…with the world release of this music video, it changed music video productions and MTV forever!

It actually amazes me that you guys had no idea, even when not being from that era. That's kinda impossible. This was really groundbreaking, at the scale of Elvis, Beatles... Even my kids, who are teenagers now, understand the significance of this album and this video. They've known it for years. The techniques used, the filming, the special effects, the costs to make it... it was all huge for the 80ties. And Michael was the first to even make a short film like this to accompany a single. There's a long 'making off' video, which actually aired on tv multiple times. (Remember at the time that was the only visual media channel available at home). MTV was just a babychannel... MJ had set the bar for artists to come up with creative musicvideo's since then. Also the choreo, as it was done in a group like this, in sync, was something he was famous for. And make no mistake, everyone knew about the zombies dancing. It was a big hype, and is copied everywhere up until today. As cheesy as it comes across to you today, at the time there was a serious age-warning before airing.
I’m always so surprised at people who haven’t seen this. My 23 year old son saw it at school when he was in the third grade. They had a Halloween event for parents to attend and the whole grade did the dance in their Halloween costumes. It was adorable.

Yes, that's actually Michael. There's a video called The Making of Thriller with exclusive interviews and makeup and how everything came to life. I loved watching it as a kid. It's fascinating. They talk to Michael throughout, the Director John Landis, the makeup artist Rick Baker Ola Ray (the girl in the video), and the performers while putting makeup on.

I just watched it after almost 40 years. The full video is on YT and was uploaded a year ago. Its 58 mins long, and it's well worth it to watch. You really see what a great guy Michael was. Just salt of the earth.
