Yes, that is me on drums. This is a small bar in Bridgeport CT growing up. John played awesome and Sam Morrissey was on bass. Our set was mainly heavy blues Stevie and Jimi. With about 40 people in a bar on a random day, we sparked serious energy.

But what makes him so special is how he can sing so well while playing (hell, just being able to sing while playing is an achievement in of in itself). A lot of people really underestimate how hard it is to sing while playing guitar. I know a lot of guys who can play the likes of EVH or Blackmore or Vai but couldn't sing while playing if their life depended on it

the kid was 17, how can anybody talk shit about this incredible guitar work. even if he is "ripping off stevie" it would take anybody a lifetime of practice to sound anywhere near this good. Plus john mayer has now taken stevie and many other styles and molded them into his own style and sound which is unique and all his own.

He sat for hours and learned how to play like B.B., SRV, Albert King, Jimi, etc. etc. He mimics them in his playing because they are his heroes. He synthesizes SRV and B.B. all in one solo and its amazing. You hear him paying homage a lot more when he plays straight blues music. But, listen to solos on Gravity, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room, I Don't Trust Myself with Loving You (all live of course) and he has a style of his own. He knows the exact right notes to choose to evoke emotion, not just shred up and down the neck. He also infuses jazz stylings into his playing quite frequently. Listen to him play his solo on Sweet Home Chicago at Crossroads, he blows almost everyone out of the water. The man has an incredible ear and soul for music, his musicality is not a learned behavior, but one he clearly was born with.

I could not agree more. I used to defend him, but now I just don't give that time of my life away to anyone who doesn't understand music or instruments other than selecting the listening device of choice and pressing play. That's what Music is all about and why we have influential people and reasons for liking what we do because of them. It goes the same for athletes and Internet trolls I guess they have their heroes I'm sure that they get off on laughing at their jokes??? All of my guitar influences turned me into the player I am . You're goddamn right I steal his licks! What the hell do you think the blues is?? There's a part of the Guitar literally deemed the BB King block and I, with much respect steal it and play it with my best ability not to let him down LOL. Internet trolling assholes are nothing more than people insecure of themselves with nothing at all to do with their pathetic lives. I never understood spending the time to comment on something you do not like, when knowing you didn't like "it" before you even clicked on it. I'll end my rant by saying if Eric Clapton approves...i'm good with that.. It would be like Jesus recommending religion. Those two giants of their craft have a better understanding than any of us ever will. Yes I compared Jesus and Clapton with sarcasm but let's troll the trollers. We know they're sitting home doing nothing.

It's funny how the internet is. If John Mayer had 17 today and this happened to show up on youtube, people would be like "Meh, SRV is better" and shit. Back then when we didn't have youtube or anything like it, people knew how to appreciate a guitar player. I'm not a fan of John Mayer's work whatsoever, but anyone who refuses to recognize him as a good guitar player is an asshole. What I mean by that is he has great diversity in his style and his ability to adapt to different moods and feel is among the best I have ever seen. Sure, Jimi and Stevie playing there stuff sound better but at least part of that is because it's theirs. If we never heard of those guys and they all existed in the same era and we gave them all Red House to cover I wonder which version we would like best? Guess we'll never know will we?

+joesl8 You are really showing your lack of knowledge about Mayer's catalog and who listens to his music. Those so called teenage girls? They're middle aged at this point and have kids themselves. He's enjoying a long and loyal following which has evolved as he has. People who are critical of Mayer amazes me. Have all the musical heavy weights with whom he has collaborated, written with, performed with...have all these people got it wrong? Do they all think he's a tool? If he's such a tool and only appeals to teen age girls how to you explain the trajectory of his career? How do you explain his success? It's certainly not bubble gum to be greatly respected by the likes of Clapton. Or was he seduced too? You don't have to like his voice and you don't have to be a fan, but you're dead wrong about his musical relevance and credibility among peers.

But his voice was what really panded him there. I mean why do you think he got famous singing acoustic pop songs dude and not blistering solos or as a blues musician like SRV? Simple, he just didn't have the chops. But he had the chops for pop music. And if you track his career it wasn't until he was a pop star he dabbled in blues and other music, he knew he had no chance but to write Taylor Swift esque pop music. So ya that's basically like entering a shit ton of cheat codes into GTA.

Its the triple threat of voice, guitar and songwriting. Also, why would he have made music that nobody was going to listen too? His choice to start with "acoustic pop" music to become famous is pretty logical considering the other artists during that time (it also made him millions so you cant blame him). Why wasn't he blues guitarist from day one? Probably because no labels would sign kids during that time. Who are you to say that he doesn't have the chops for blues? He is undoubtedly an absolute animal on the guitar and has been recognized by B.B, Clapton and probably more. I'll take their opinions over pretty much anyone elses, especially urs. In my humble opinion, this is pretty Damn good and I know Stevie Ray Vaughan would be impressed. If Stevie Ray Vaughan was still alive I'm sure he would be on one of his new CDs. Albert King was impressed by Stevie Ray Vaughan which is not easy to do. He gave Albert King no quarter when they played in Canada but at Anton's Stevie Ray Vaughan was going at it with Albert King going toe to toe and coming back with another cool guitar riff.

Exceptional guitar work! It's interesting to consider if he had gone the way of Blues guitar hero, he might still be doing one nighters out of a van. He'd be wowing people in clubs but doubtful he would have risen to such heights. Not because he wasn't great because he was as/is a great guitar player. But that's not enough to distinguish you from a world of great guitar players! His writing skills and performance of those songs distinguishes him out from the rest. AND he plays a bitchin' guitar as well. Now you've got something (kid)!

Had no idea he could play like this as a kid. I saw one of his shows right after he got signed and it was just him with an acoustic singing generic pop. I was like 'meh' and never listened to him again for about 15 years or so until I heard his incredible Trio stuff

Its hard to think this dude would be a versatile Pop star starting here. Shows you how much a person can grow by moving out of the little pond.

Being popular for romantic interests does not take away from the fact that Mayer has been acclaimed by critics and legendary guitarists/musicians everywhere.
You can give Govan that superficial title, but no modern guitarist knows music like Mayer.

you are quite correct, no ingenuity; because john mayer is extremely genuine and writes fantastic lyrics. covering a major, major guitar legend at the age of 17 takes major balls

It takes discipline for a drummer to stick to his basic slow drum, giving that awesome feeling to a song. This drummer seems to struggle with that. Great to hear this stuff nonetheless, thanks for these uploads!

as written in the description john was 17 years old. keep this fact in mind an remember he went '97 to collage, till then his voice wasn't that well developed. i'm sure there he got his voice education
