At 1:53, to keep that timing up to hit that lick and not fall behind or make a mistake is so impressive.Playing rhythm while hitting these type of blues runs is so hard to do let alone stay in almost perfect timing throughout John is one of the most influential guitarists ever
This is sick! Clapton is a legendary player, however, I believe that John will go down as one of the most versatile and best guitarists ever. The guy could play circles around most anyone, including Clapton, it is just a fact.
LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO, sorry, I wanted to respond to how ridiculous and funny your imbecilic comment that me can play circles around EC was, but it took me 13 years to stop laughing!
@@masxn_t2276 That's because John was already brilliant 14 years ago. In fact, it's hard to point his guitar playing year and say that he wasn't impressive in it.
Note to Haters: You know when people criticize famous athletes as though they were anywhere near as talented or had any idea what they were saying. Pick up a guitar and sing to room full of people who are giving you their undivided attention. Then make a living traveling the world filling up stadiums/venues. Then have the greatest guitarist/bluesmen alive say that you are one of the greatest they've ever heard. Do I enjoy his pop stuff? Nope. Is he the best vocalist ever? Nope. Am I mad at Michael Jordan for playing baseball? Nope. Do I critizicize him for his imperfections? Nope. I just go listen to something else. Music is an expression of the individual as well as collective experience. Let it be.
You have to remember with this version John is doing rhythm and solo at the same time. It makes it alot harder as he hasn't got a band with him playing the chords on loop. He's doing both.
Morgane Laroche lol this is not shit at all, u are just ignorant and jealous of mayers pure skill, id like to see you try to play as soulful and good as him
I think Mayer was listening to a lot of Clapton and Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green days) when he was making Continuum. "I'm Gonna Find Another You" sounds a lot like "Need Your Love So Bad' by Fleetwood Mac.
his jeff buckley bit at the end was suchhhh a nice touch and it introduced me to buckley’s music. now both john and jeff are my two favorite artists ever ugh both insane musicians. i really hope john does more covers of buckley’s music
I don't think many people in the world, let alone on youtube, can critique John Mayer's guitar playing...you may not like his style, but he is incredibly well respected by guitar LEGENDS, including Clapton.
everyones just hating on him because hes John Mayer and not Eric Clapton. he's still a great artist. great voice amazing guitarist. his voice and playing are super unique its fun to listen to him. he's really good at what he does. Eric Clapton is a legend its hard to live up to his work but look how much soul and uniqueness John put into this. he's doing what he loves and you can tell. and isnt that what its all about???
His guitar playing is unquestionable. I thought people would kick off more about his vocals? Rough round the edges but gets the same expression out of the song as clapton so it's a perfect cover.
john kills this ... i mean its so raw and o emotional.... its the template of how this song should be... intimate and soulful... and how he does rythem and lead... its crazy.... his dynamics is superb......
The point is that John Mayer is molding blues guitar with pop music and putting it on the radio. This causes people to want to listen to blues, then those people look into his interests, then look into Clapton, then Hendrix, then Buddy Guy, then BB King. Sooner or later those people are blues fanatics. Just like me.
John Mayer keeps playing pop because he likes it. In some interview he states that he enjoys laying the riffs and steady beats in the pop genre. The blues is his playground. The thrill of laying an incredible blues solo and letting his skills do justice is why he plays the blues. I think that his two parts join each other incredibly good! That he is such a broad music makes him amazing as an musician.
i like how everyone has to pit these incredible musicians against each other. fact of the matter is, they are ALL INCREDIBLE. No one is necessarily better than the other. They influenced each other and they took parts from each's styles and made it their own. That's what is so amazing about music. Let's just acknowledge the wonderful talen that is mayer, cray, the 3 kings, clapton, SRV, BLUES IN GENERAL. LONG LIVE BLUES GUITAR!
I love John Mayer. I agree about showing respect he is one of the few singer/songwriters left. He can write some serious music and his guitar skills are awesome. He has won the respect of veteran musicians like Eric Clapton. He can do some really great covers of songs. He puts his own twists on them. I think he is one of the most creative entertainers out there. True music lovers see that and respect that. John Mayer is the bomb!
to get to the root of who you are ..you must open your heart and soul....John has got to that place...fearless ..of what you find there...and his guitar was in his hand..shades of .peter green and eric clapton guiding and coaxing him to that spot
Great music is never a matter of technique or skill, yes, it helps, and it's needed, but by no means what so ever is it the cause of the the great music. Passion, soul and devotion are the cause, and make the music so ingenious and different and almost indescribable, something everyone needs to learn
I am a big Mayer fan, and I too agree that while this is not my most favorite presentation of this song, it is indeed fantastic. I think my favorite was EC on the unplugged, but there again, fantastic backup. With regard to "I especially like how Mayer mixes the rhythm & lead." I agree, it is very Robert Johnson. Thanks for sharing this song.
I love Mayer's take on this Clapton song. Some people are missing the point. It's his interpretation of this classic. He definitely put his signature guitar playing on this. And that's what you'd want from someone covering a classic; their interpretation. The one criticism is that he does sound, vocally, like Dave Matthews. But, that's not a bad thing either!
I like this version. Being a musician myself, I have a tremendous appreciation for talent and those who can take a great song and do it their way. The solo actually made me say "Damn". =]
I love that you referenced Victor Wooten! I got the chance to talk to him for about 60 seconds way back in the day . . . and the guy is so down to earth. (Keep in mind that I was 17) I asked him "what's it like to know that you're the best bass player in the world" and the look he gave me was PRICELESS! He said, "Not even close! There are guys like (insert 8 names here) that I couldn't touch if I practiced every waking minute of the day". THAT is a true musician.
thanks to Mayer iu find myself constantly trying to play rythm and lead together to fill up the room with sound which is essential when you find yourself being a one man band Thanks for the post of yet another one of Johns triumphs of proving that he belongs listed in with the "greats"
When I was first introduced to John Mayer, around this time (2002) it wasn't to Room for Squares, it was to a burned CD of tracks like this. It was songs like these that influenced me to start playing guitar. I was always trying for something close to this. The tone really got me. But I think John was playing his version of his idol's style. And moved on to his own sound, leaving songs like this as a period in his playing. I can't wait for other's version of his playing style. Should be as epic.
I don't think you guys understand... he's playing rhythm and soloing AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! No loop pedal or nothing.... In other words..... that's INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another great version of this song from Clapton is the one off the "& Friends" concert. Every note - from beginning to end - makes me melt. But John Mayer does an incredible job of holding down the chords of the song while playing the solo at the same time. That kind of talent should not be ignored...
I agree I love them all and can't pick a favorite. But, Meyer does stuff that makes my jaw drop. Just when I think he's done doing something amazing he does something else. I am embarassed to say I only heard him on the radio for years and wrote him off as bubble gum garbage. Then I saw a special on him on public tv and have been a # 1 fan ever since. He's not bubblegum at heart his playing is as serious as a heart attack.
Respect that Mayer gatewayed' you onto other great music. It's hard to justify a comment that classifies one musician as being one of the best... there's so much music unlistened' to in any given time or genre.
I wrote how much I love JM's music on fb and I'm a fan always with luv for his music and many Genre of his music/ that is an intelligent singer/songwriter need I say more
Holy crap, was that "Lady in My Life" he was slippin' in there? I know he slipped in "Lover You Should Have Come Over." I love it when artists do that.
Oh, I would not go that far, there are incredible players in our generation: Vai, Petrucci, di Meola, Slash, and many many more! People should stop trying to rank these guys. Music is art, it gets to different people in different ways. Just be happy that you have so many talented musicians to explore and enjoy! And yes, Mayer is a fantastic blues player!
People hate too much... they say clapton is so much better than mayer, and i agree... He is, but still clapton himself has said in interviews that JM is going to be one of the best, and has played with mayer on many occasions... everyone stop hating, just chill and respect a guy that can play guitar better than any of us.
What I like about JM's guitar playing is that he's taking risks. He seems to be just taking off without exactly knowing where he might touch down, yet enjoying the ride. And if I'm talking total rubbish here, apologies :-)
Sweet, thanks fr the link, that's MUCH better... I suspect maybe it's the recording quality of this version, but I don't care for how much he deviates from the main riff/sound of the original.
crushme41dmb, wherever you are today. Thank you so, so much for letting us enjoy your upload up to this day. Hope you are alright and things worked out well for you. :)

I know it's awesome, right? I saw him at the Pepsi Center in Denver last year- Every song had a unique opening solo, some lasting 3-4 minutes of just him and that sweet white and red guitar with rose pedals.

@@masxn_t2276 That's because John was already brilliant 14 years ago. In fact, it's hard to point his guitar playing year and say that he wasn't impressive in it.
John is the perfect combination of Clapton, SRV, Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Buckley.
Jeff buckley is still up there
In terms of guitar playing yes, but no one sings quite like Buckley
Note to Haters: You know when people criticize famous athletes as though they were anywhere near as talented or had any idea what they were saying. speak it man
John H
No hating my side but those forced vocals , ala Sting makes me cringe . He's murdering Clapton's song .
Just my taste .
mayer is a fantastic musician
then pick up a guitar and and mic and do it yourself
John's a master of the instrument. Astonishing playing!
+Morgane Laroche you're supposed to be kidding. You mustn't be serious.
He's a great guitar player, IMHO.
De gustibus, it's a matter of taste. I don't like Frusciante although he's an acconplished guitar player.
+Morgane Laroche eric clapton already said that john mayer is master guitar player
+MusicForPeaceGermany agreed
You have to remember with this version John is doing rhythm and solo at the same time. It makes it alot harder as he hasn't got a band with him playing the chords on loop. He's doing both.
Morgane Laroche lol this is not shit at all, u are just ignorant and jealous of mayers pure skill, id like to see you try to play as soulful and good as him
And don’t forget he is also singing at the same time.
that solo is a passionate conversation between old lovers that we needed
John solo is one of the greatest blues (any) guitarist of my generation probably. Thank you John!
This song was how "I don't trust myself (in loving you) " was born
omfg never even thought about that
I think Mayer was listening to a lot of Clapton and Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green days) when he was making Continuum. "I'm Gonna Find Another You" sounds a lot like "Need Your Love So Bad' by Fleetwood Mac.
Elder Perez yes
WHOA.
More ‘Only Heart’ but the fretting technique for IDTMWLY for sure.
for all the haters... he is playing ALONE -.- he is doing the solo and the rithm so dont be hard
That fill he does after the first chorus is almost too smooth... Brilliant
his jeff buckley bit at the end was suchhhh a nice touch and it introduced me to buckley’s music. now both john and jeff are my two favorite artists ever ugh both insane musicians. i really hope john does more covers of buckley’s music
JM has some of the cleanest and most listenable solos out there. He structures his guitar solos so well that they feel like verses of their own.
i like the hypnotizing feel he rendered in this song...
I don't think many people in the world, let alone on youtube, can critique John Mayer's guitar playing...you may not like his style, but he is incredibly well respected by guitar LEGENDS, including Clapton.

I'm so sick of UA-cam comparisons. The hardest thing the human race is to just shut up. LOVE YOU JOHN.. LOVE YOU ERIC.

So much soul in this...

There will never be another Eric Clapton, but there sure as hell won't be another John Mayer either.
the groove that he's got on is amazing.
so much attack on this solo I love it
loveeeee when artists perform like this and you can never expect what's next ugh its just so cool to me

Indeed. Another reason why guitar has to be the greatest instrument in the world. You can be alone and get the chills.
Doesn't matter what anyone says, he's an amazing artist

Love the way John speaks with the guitar along with that beautiful voice!
The jeff buckley improv is wonderful.
thumbs up for him making it his own.
This mans self accompaniment is just insane, very talented guy.
Love all music, but lo ve and relate to him I've I've known since he was 20....,

Is he never using a looping pedal in this song? Singing, soloing and comping at once? Genius!
No loop pedals
No kidding!
hey guys!!! let me prove this guy wrong!! JM is the greatest guitarist of our generation!!
AND GREATEST FOR WE FANS!!!
Great music is never a matter of technique or skill, yes, it helps, and it's needed, but by no means what so ever is it the cause of the the great music. I fully agree that John Mayer is one of his generation's best blues guitarist, but clapton is still king :)
tRUE... they each have special qualities that any aspiring guitarist has to admire.....
john Mayer, Eric Clapton and Jeff Buckley in one song. Perfection.
I continuously ..am in Love with this Gent!!..his tunez drive me incompacitated..I so need all his moments in SONG!!
Wow hard to believe this was 11 years ago, and still amazing as ever!
Now 20🤪

nope i disagree....... HE IS THE GREATST GUITARIST OF OUR GENERATN!!! THUMBS UP IF ANY ONE AGREES!!
Mayer is one of the best blues players of his generation. If you don't agree you don't understand what the hell you are talking about.
What a wonder version of this song!
Amazing, the best!!
greatest guitarist of our generation!!!
he is amazing live

Mayer adds so much groove to his covers. I won't say it's better than Clapton, but definitely amazing.
duuuuude... i'd kill to listen to him cover a full jeff buckley song. that small bit of 'lover you should've come over' is just an appetizer.
I like this version. Being a musician myself, I have a tremendous appreciation for talent and those who can take a great song and do it their way. The solo actually made me say "Damn".

He is awesome as a singer&guitar player....
*Wonderful*
The great ones always do. No matter what the genre. You hear it a lot in jazz. Bird, Duke, and Dizzy were masters at it.
sencillamente increíble
Knowing certain licks and copying others to a "T" don't make you a blues man! Homeboy.
I don't think you guys understand... he's playing rhythm and soloing AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! No loop pedal or nothing.... In other words..... that's INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thank you. It is my favorite too.
very sweet!

that was hardcore..
Tuck Andress was there too.. thanks god for John Mayer :D Eric Clapton Robert Cray n the rest :D thanks for uploading man, THANKS!
most talented artist of our generation!!!
I agree.....there is more to him than meets the eye musically. I hear allsorts of old school blues influences in there. Looks can be decieving....!
damn john mayer is so good. thanks for uploading!
Holy crap, was that "Lady in My Life" he was slippin' in there? I know he slipped in "Lover You Should Have Come Over." I love it when artists do that.
why is john mayer so freakin good AHHHH
You're right. I was just being compulsive. I get chills from great keyboard, drums, sax, etc. But yes, my heart belongs to guitar as well.
am i the only one who kinda gets like a slight 'covered in rain' vibe or is reminded of the solo from 'Any Given Thursday' from that solo
Muito bom!! Sempre se supera!! Músico notável!!
awesome improvisation man
i mean the thing about john mayer is that he experiments a lot which makes him a lot diff than other artists. great job
he keeps the rhythym going during that solo somehow. i hear that bass note keep playing!!!! wtf!! john keep tearin it up man
Oh, I would not go that far, there are incredible players in our generation: Vai, Petrucci, di Meola, Slash, and many many more!

"What do we need a label for?"
Wish more folks stood up and asked themselves that question.
