fully agree... John front-loaded his best work to establish himself as a star (and who can blame any artist for doing that?). Well in a sense he has continually toned down his own personality in his lyrics to make them more accessible and ultimately sell-able. The lyrics on this song are extremely personal and it's unlikely that the listener would see themselves in the lyrics the first time round the song plays. What works for room for squares is that the lyrics are simple enough (even if they're well woven) that the listener can connect with them and have the illusion that John is literally speaking to them. And over the years he has toned his lyrical "quirks" even more... to the point that songs like "new light" and "carry me away" are literally mirroring the lyrical elementary-ness of other contemporary pop acts. He is tryna fit in, but it just hides how good a songwriter he is (or atleast was at some point)

MisterJatip It's all in the right hand man. Just a tip, but try using all four of your fingers as one, and your thumb independently. Keep at it. Don't try to do a lot of stuff. Play enough you'll get the groove. It sounds complex, but it's just a matter of playing until you get the groove.
And to be easier to find them all. Die hard or not, he has a huge amount of unreleased songs, and it's just easier if they're all collected. I've found a few on reddit, but still...

Awesome tune!!!
Holy FAAACK what can't he do?!!! Straight Jazz AND. AAAND skat. I'm going to throw up, pls excuse me, folks I'm done
3:35 reminds me of the solo before Neon from Where the light is.
Amazing song !
he's coming to london in october! I'm at his show :D
LOVE THIS SONG!!!
wow this is similar to glenn lewis 'don't you forget it' awesome
It is from Eddies attic in 99
I hope this goes on his next album o_O
Yeah
He wrote this good back then!? O.o Wish he'd bring out stuff like this these days
No one confessed how good that was there i guess
loveeee Mr Mayer!
I just cannot get the same sound as this song,I tried learning it by ear, and reading up on the only tab available for this song, and I just can't get it right. I know it's HIS song, but still! It's a great song and I want to play the way he does.
MisterJatip It's all in the right hand man. Just a tip, but try using all four of your fingers as one, and your thumb independently. Keep at it. Don't try to do a lot of stuff. Play enough you'll get the groove. It sounds complex, but it's just a matter of playing until you get the groove.
I found some really good tabs that helped me play this SPOT on. If you want, I could send them to you?
please do !
Zartimus did a good tutorial.
if I was john mayer, I'ld have my own bar by now
Perfect! 2018
mayer just added damn good lyrics
sounds he was listening to a lot of stevie wonder when he wrote this. so many moments that remind me of him
Why won't he RELEASE all his "unreleased"?!?! Seriously drives me insane!!
sooo jazzy! hes straight bad ass.
Love!!!!!
I love you John mayer
Genius
And to be easier to find them all. Die hard or not, he has a huge amount of unreleased songs, and it's just easier if they're all collected. I've found a few on reddit, but still...
Definitely Lifelines
Eyyyy teases of Neon licks in this
haha, I'm visiting London this summer.
congrats
You can hear the jazz and r&b influences... he'll come back full circle, but he has to venture out. He's too talented to stay limited.
It’ll come back down to this
Wnkw eternity in my new 🌎 together forever. I LOVE u. My joy 🌹God💋
The background chatter adds a jazzy vibe to this song. Honestly it would be weird without it
You my history
....you and me...lifelines believe that you were married to her and she committed to you John Mayer ❤👄❤
i favorites this video 4 seconds in.
People are so fucking insane! How tf are people just screaming and fucking around in the background when he's playing? Good lord! I'd get off the stage and never play at that place again ever.
I think it was when he was starting off
