Hi Paul, it should be fine once it's been given a good clean. I was going to do it today but I ended up stripping a Mainline 45 down. One of those jobs I wish I had never started....Merry Christmas Rick 🚂🧑🎄⛄🎄
Hi Paul, everything we buy gets used. This morning I have been running a Lima 50 and 47 and putting some new traction tyres on a Mainline 45. That's the good thing about these old models they can be put back in the boxes without fear of bits breaking off! Hopefully we can make some progress on the layout over Christmas. The 58 still needs a good clean and I will crack on with that later today once I have finished with more Christmas stuff. All the best and Merry Christmas Rick 🧑🎄⛄🎄
great find and nice set, my first hornby train set was the twin set from 1995 with class 47 and railbus still have them now, thanks for sharing keep up the good work. Tom
If I may give a word of advice, if you have a loco, that was out of use for so long, or you buy it second hand (in this case you don't know when it was last used) never ever try to run it, without taken it apart and clean every part of it, even if its very old new old stock. If your scare to do that, a good and capable modelshop knows what to do and will help you. But I think most modelers are capable to do this themself, take your time, make sure nobody distract you, be organized and if it gets complicated, film it how you take it apart. The biggest problem, and that is almost a basic rule for all old mechanical toys, also slot cars etc., is that the old oils have become unstable, and turn into a solid mess and thereby glue everything together. And If you got no movement or a lot of friction your electrics will burn out, even for a very short run, don't doubt about that. Clean every moving part, if there is cabling, make sure they are in good condition. I had very old pre WW2 locos, by only watching at the cable insulation, it crumbled into dust. And if you got a motors that can be taken apart, like a Lima ringmotor for instance, clean it, look at the brushes, get your self a glass fiber pen to clean the copper collector parts, and finely use a fine oil to grease axel, bearings and gears. And actually this type of maintenance you should repeat on a frequent base, compare it to the maintenance you do for your car, your model will last you a life time and beyond, if you stick to that rule. I got a 100 year old tinplate O gauge LMS Hornby loco running around my Christmas tree now, that runs as good as the boy who got it 100 years ago, and this is only possible if you give your models the love and care they need… Again great video👍 And a Merry Christmas to you all…🎅🧚🌲🚂
Hi Danny, very good advice.I have given it a quick clean but it is being stripped down and cleaned because as you said the oil on closer inspection is very sticky and this will be putting a big strain on the motor. Your old locos sound marvellous. Once again thanks for taking the time to pass on your very helpful advice. Merry Christmas Rick 🎄⛄🧑🎄🚂
The real thing were an amazing waste of resources. It was 19 years between the first one appearing and the last one being withdrawn. Happily, I had all 50 of them on passenger trains or railtours back in the day.
The Midnight Freight set was my first adventure into model railways when I was about 11 or 12. It was a fantastic set for the time with the variety of track and additional items you got.
Hi, Hornby did a great variety of sets back in the day. My first sets were both Lima but a Flying Scotsman set soon followed. The set came with 4 LNER teak coaches! Merry Christmas Rick
Hi Rick and Pauline ,, good tomsee another good info and some running too. This is thee first time ive seen you entire layout. Have ypu also changed the points that were near you as its just a straight througb track with no points. Your loco needs a full strip down and a good oiling and it will fly like a rocket. Cheers from john in Australia.
Hi John, the points were moved a while back. The 58 is running ok now after a good clean, in fact it's been on the layout getting regular running since then. Thanks for watching Rick
Hi both. Love your blogs and vlogs. I noticed you were using your fingers to wind the tape forward on your sound cassette. Try a pencil instead. It is a lot easier and doesn’t hurt your fingers. Just saying. All the best and a merry Christmas and a happy new year to you both. Oh, and Bobby and the cats, lol.
Hi Kevin, thanks for watching. Yes doing that takes us back! The last time I listened to a cassette was in an old car I bought that still had the original cassette player in it. Merry Christmas Rick and Pauline. PS both pets have been spoiled with presents. 🎄🎅🐈🐕
Wow rick that was an old timer not quite a class 33 crompton ps when you getting one my faverate they were ,anyway merry christmas to you and pauline from pete .
I asked Santa for that trainset in 1988 and got the railfreight set and a hst pack instead, years later my dad said he couldn't get that set anywhere so got me the others instead, 36 years later the class 37 & the hst both work well albeit converted to dcc and surrounded by Irish rail models.
Hi Tomas, 37 and HST sounds like a good alternative to me. The only Hornby set I had was the Flying Scotsman with 4 teak coaches, you got a good number of coaches back then. Nice that you still have the locos running. All the best Rick.
Hi Carl, yes I just need to strip it down and give it a good clean. It is full of old oil. When I have done that it should run fine. Merry Christmas Rick. 🎅🚂🚂🧑🎄⛄🎄
Hi Rick & Pauline, the SC wagons are Stevenson & Clarke, they are predominantly in green but the grey ones look quite nice too. As well as Hornby, Mainline did them also, we have a few of these in our collection.
Good old Roger... and Tom!!! WOW you know this is nice and still in box wow 😂. I am watching and just into it but nice set to get!!! A little clean up and they just might be ok to run now and then. I have the Yellow🚃 one lol. That is my next Purchase💲🚂the Train that you are holding 😬. Look at you great 🎞yes!!!It does look like it is. to quote the Beatles It's Getting Beter all the Time lol ... Sorry about that I just had too!!!! Good info on this to know more about them so win I do go to get one I am ready lol!!! So do I need to give Roger and Tom my Address 😅lol so I can get a Package🎁as well lol!!! All the best to you all from the Us cheers !!!!
Hi Brad, unfortunately there are no sets left at Rogers! Once cleaned it should run fine. It's nice that the set is complete and that the way it will stay as we have no intention of moving it on. So no the set "won't be leaving home again" to complete the Pepper theme lol. Cheers for watching and Merry Christmas Rick 🚂😀🎄⛄🎅
I do think it is a splendid set. Just having fun with you about getting it 🧐. But I do look forward to seeing it run on your Layout🚂. And I do hope that you have a wondaful Christmas time🎄... LOL to Quote Paul McCartney cheers mate☃!!!
Hi Rick, amazing how survival has depended on being forgotten. I have the 58 with a ringfield, yeuch. I think at the time, Hornby pulled it out of their turntable! It was woefully underpowered though.
wow you have a 58 set too, they are great models and beautiful runners... Natalie picked mine up from a car boot with some of the sets wagons for £10... i gave it a quick service and a clean and it runs like new... Well done great video..👍🏻🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
Hi Neil, I remember you did a video on that a while back. They are not a bad model are they. It was great to get my old controller back as it's the only thing I have from my childhood railway. That controller was my main controller pretty much from day 1 and the last thing I got rid of. In the photo are a Lima Western Renown, Wrenn R1 in LMS red and a Hornby HST. I have since picked up all these again at Toy Fairs since I got back into the railways. Merry Christmas to you Natalie and Simba. 🚂🧑🎄⛄🎄
Luckily it ran but in most cases the lubricants have leaked out and/or hardened. You can still find nice older sets though but people tend to think they're antiques and worth their weight in gold. Basically the techical side is crappy but in this case it might be a nice setup.
Hi Ed, yes it looks like the oil has hardened and bunged all the cogs up. I will strip it down and give it a thorough service over Christmas. All the best Rick 🎄⛄🎅
@@wellchuffedrailways What a way to spend christmas, busy with the hobby, probably gonna dive into a Carry On marathon myself. Have a good christmas guys 😄🎄
Hi, I always wanted a class 58, I’m happy to say I got hold of one this year, it runs very well, I hope Accurascale bring one out in the not to distant future, great review.
Nice video - I wish Hornby had adopted that style of motor instead of the ring-field motor, even the CD motor upgrade doesn't get round the poor quality of the metal used in some of the older models. The metal on my class 25 power bogie wore out to such an extent that the plastic cogs no longer remained 'meshed', it looked like they hadn't 'cast' properly during the manufacturing process - Oh well! It was good to see the '58, when I was younger it was very exciting to see one on the Fiddlers Ferry MGR coal trains. - Have a Great Christmas both of you!
Hi Alex, yes it's not a bad motor and I agree the Ringfields definitely felt built down to a cost. What's surprising is how much better the Lima motors were even though the locos sold for less. To be fair there wasn't much choice back then. I think the 58 was a rare change from the norm for Hornby back then. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas Rick 🎄⛄🎅
it wasn't the smokey joe motor at that time it was a motor that was introduced just for the 58 , later they introduced the same motor to the jinty etc to upgrade them
Lovely to see an attic find come back to life .
Hi, it certainly is! It's also great that the set has not been split up. Cheers Rick
Thanks guys that brings back memories loco runs well happy Christmas 🎄😊
Cheers Ciaran, have a great Christmas 🎅⛄🎄
Great to see these old trains being used as intended instead of buying these hugely expensive new models. Merry Christmas to you both.
Cheers Deano. Merry Christmas Rick 🚂🎄⛄🎅
I always wanted this set but never got it until a few years ago I purchased one. Great set with loads of wagons, great video.
It's a great set isn't it. Hornby certainly didn't scrimp on the number of wagons back then. All the best Rick
What a great find. These older models run well, although they are sometimes noisy. Have fun. Some great memories for you. 🎉
