Thank you all so much for all the amazing comments - I never expected this video to go down like this! I hope you enjoyed the video and maybe learned something new... thank you all for being awesome! And to the 0.01% of you who are mean... thank you too for keeping me on my toes!! 🤣
Hi Sam. How refreshing to see you expressing total honesty in response to the large swathe of criticism you often receive. I myself have sometimes wondered about you and your presentation style but now, on reflection after watching this video, I have to say that I was guilty of critical thinking at times when, in actual fact, I should have taken a step back and seen the bigger picture regarding this channel. Now that we all know where you are coming from, we should just sit back and enjoy the content, and anyone who still does not like what they see should move on to another channel where they can take the opportunity of curmudgeonly criticising that channel's author. Sam, keep up the reviewing as it helps us to make an informed decision when thinking of parting with our hard-earned cash. Kind regards, Paul. 👍👍👍
Hey, J from America here. Dig the channel. Very jealous of your 3D print locos! Take the MONEY!!!!! I'm a recovering rivet counter, but still buying 50's and 60's wood and metal kits to build. I find your videos fun. Stop reading people's crappe, ya could be building stuff! Build your layout to suit ya own style. I've seen layouts just for "running" trains. Just track, no buildings, no scenery. I am writing this as I listen to the video. Your videos are a way for me to see models I will never get to see and in a disassembled state. And kinda cool to see your enjoyment of US prototypes. Keep building them locos, how ever you do it. Your method of attack to a build a loco has inspired me just to destroy 3 locos to build one from parts!!! Lionel trains have run more carpet miles than people on earth. Metal wheels all the way!! Modeling in 1/48 scale, metal wheels are the only way to go. Take care, Thanks for the videos!!!!
Sam, you aim your content at a diverse and ageless audience, ranging from younger audiences to every model railroader. You execute your videos with a professional and rehearsed rhetoric, concise and relevant knowledge about railways and a memorable video format. The way you conduct yourself affords you notoriety and accreditation as a UA-camr and a model railroader.
I’ve never watched a video of yours and thought it’s nothing but a model train enthusiast. Your good sense of humour and creative mind is so good to see
Oh man, this has caused flashbacks to online arguments I've had with model railway enthusiasts on Certain Forums We Will Not Name. Actually, I think Chloe was quoting from some of those threads. If it's any consolation, on closer questioning, it usually turns out that they haven't actually watched your videos. They base their opinions on what other people have said and their own personal prejudices. This, incidentally, is why you get people who talk about you running layouts on carpet but not taking into account your videos on repair and maintenance - they don't know the latter videos exist. Often, they don't know anything about UA-cam whatsoever, I'm sick of having people explain to me how my own job works. There's this very reactionary, gatekeeping element in the hobby, and unfortunately, they're often the ones in charge - I've had conversations with some very well respected figures in the hobby and found them to be snide, passive-aggressive and obsessed with "winning." I They don't actually know your channel, all they know is that it's not modelling the way they like to do it, and therefore you are Not A Real Modeller. I've even known them to pretend that people who engage in the hobby the way this channel does are somehow trying to destroy scratchbuilding and historical accuracy in the hobby. They get quite worked up about it, it's not healthy. I've stopped engaging with people like that. How do you reason with someone who's just decided they hate something without knowing anything about it, or who invents reasons to hate someone just because they want a reason to hate them? If you point the flaws in their argument out, they'll just come up with something else, or flounce out. Sorry, that was quite a rant, but I have issues with certain obnoxious elements of this hobby.
Not gonna lie, the rivet counters who get mad at layouts on carpet are the definition of they don’t know how to have fun and make basic observations. It’s very clear that in your videos you have a deep love and care for trains. Keep doing what you’re doing Sam! I think you’re a cracking UA-camr who’s inspired many!👑
Yeah that's right - this is all about having fun, and everyone should be free to have fun in the way they prefer... and they are!! Thanks so much for your support, Sam :)
Back in the late 70s there were two fine scale societies, I can't remember the reason but they were such rivals, at an exhibition, one had a sign stating they would not sell anything to a member of the other group. That is the sort of nit picking that is out there. Whatever one does when making videos about model railways, you will never keep everyone happy.
@@SamsTrains tbh I've leveled criticism towards Sam's trains on occasion, mainly in the context of some models and their place in time or the market, however; these criticisms you're relaying here are really frustrating, and I'm not talking slippers (I wasn't aware that specific apparel had such an influence on whether a locomotive runs poorly or not) but this insidious tracks on carpet; you can't call it a layout, or he's just playing trains. Since when has having a model railway been defined by such authoritarianism? They're the first to be saying have to get new people into the hobby and then put all these hurdles and rules and goals in your face when maybe that's not what someone is interested in. Exactly like you said Sam, your interest is in locomotives and rolling stock, some might be collecting early tinplate, some might be high scenery with little track, or building structures, isn't this hobby about personal enjoyment? But apparently that's not allowed, you have to have a certain aim with a model railway and no other. Yeah I freely admit to occasionally disagreeing with some statements you make, but I definitely would not be critical at all of your video production, camera work, your in depth analysis of what you're reviewing. I do have one main gripe with Sam's trains, but overall it's a very good, very watchable channel, not only deserving of all the praise and subscribers you have, but deservedly making a living off it. As I've said in previous comments, keep up the good work :)
Maybe I said this before, but I began watching your videos when I was in a very bad mental state and I found them oddly comforting. They were the brighter spot in my day back then. I don't even own a model train, nor I can own one, but I guess such in-depth analysis of so many models does the thing for me well enough xD
I’m pretty much the same as you really, been watching for a few years now, not really an enthusiast, just find it interesting. But I love watching Sams content as it’s varied, interesting, fun and a pretty happy place to be. Hope you’re doing well (o:
Myself also, I found Sam's channel whilst on dialysis several years ago and, post transplant, still find his style of presentation so relaxing, interesting and entertaining and will always be a big fan.
The message I get from your 'carpet layout' is "you can have fun with any level of model train layout." That is a message worth hearing over and over and over again.
Absolutely George - I enjoy myself immensely even without a proper layout! I think everyone should be allowed to enjoy the hobby in whatever way they see fit! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam, I am a 66 year old railway and railroad modeller, working in N, HO and O scales, and have been modelling these since I was 30. I do British steam and American diesel, and I have built several layouts. I think you run a brilliant UA-cam channel and you make many very valid points regarding locomotive models, (particularly regarding the horrendous pricing by manufacturers! Long may you continue to do so!) I have, myself, over the years bought locos which quite frankly were a bag of nails, and it's good to see someone exposing this chicanery. Do these critics of yours work for any of these companies? Do excuse me, I tripped over my cynicism on the way in! Ignore them but, that's my advice. Kind regards, Keith.
Sam having lived a bit longer than you , there are people in this world who are not happy unless they're pulling successful people to pieces . What else would you expect from people on some of the media sites , they haven't got brains . Carry on with the great work
John. I think we are about the same age?. So you and I know the saying "if you haven't got anything decent to say then don't say anything at all". What ever happened to that because on social media in general no one seems to be aware of this saying.
@@maringarvanovic8011 I know full well I’m probably not as old as either of you (20) but I completely understand what both of you are saying, and I’ve heard that saying a million times. Everywhere. Even from my parents, there’s just too much evil creating more evil people in this world right now.
I agree -- you're not a "professional railroader", whatever the hell that is. And I don't want "this is pretty so go buy it" videos. You have a keen eye, lots of experience, are beholding to no one, and have a mature perspective on the larger view of the hobby as a business.. Your objective observations are ranked at the end, and I don't hear people objecting to your test results. It's a test layout on carpet -- don't like it, don't watch it. And I watch every video as soon as it drops. You cheeky monkey., you.
Remember - people who detract from others do it solely to sustain their own fragile egos, it makes them feel better and secure - in reality it has absolutely nothing to do with those they detract from, it is often just a narcissistic personality trait. You do a fantastic job and I love your reviews.
@@SamsTrains you got me back into the hobby as well, although its japanese Kato N scale (which for 104e for a complete starterset, might make an interesting video). Thank you for your content.
Dude, I’m a die hard N scaler and I still have fun watching your videos (a little enviously sometimes at the really lovely steam you review!). Its actually really nice to know that you are doing something you enjoy and can make enough money to get by, good for you mate! There’s too much doom and gloom and seeing someone enthusiastic is just a breath of fresh air😊
@@grumbeast Big time N-Scaler myself. Full disclosure here: I have set up my Kato Unitrack pieces on the floor as well. That said, I do have a tiny 2x3 foot layout that I have been working on over the past few years. Gotta say I got a little laugh from this conversation. And for the record, I think hardwood floors do count. 😂
Your embracing of 3D printing techniques and demonstrating how accessible kit can produce unique results (although not everyone has your clear talent) has been a game changer for me - almost finished my design for a LNER pipe wagon thanks to your inspiration. Cheers, keep up the great work.
I am a US model railroader and a subscriber to Sam's Trains. I watch all your videos (although I'll admit to a bit of fast forwarding past the unboxings) and enjoy them very much indeed. My impression is that your harsher critics focus on one particular or just a few aspects of the hobby and judge others through that lense alone. And no doubt jealousy or ego can play a role. This is not restricted to the hobby of model railroading! I think answering your critics was a good idea, but don't let them get you down. You do great work and should be proud (in a muted, very British sort of way). 🙂 Thank you for all your hard work and the fun and entertainment you provide. Cheers from Wisconsin!
Wouldn’t worry about it Sam, you’ve got almost 130k subscribers. Can’t believe people slag off the channel with the amount of effort and content you put into it, you are a natural, keep up the good work, can’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
haha thanks Sam - yeah that's true, I don't worry about it at all! Anyone with a genuine question/concern would come to me rather than spitting fire on a forum... I focus on the people who appreciate the content, they're the ones who deserve the attention! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I absolutely love this channel and having watched many dozens of your videos, they are refreshingly objective and very polite. Social media has spawned a bunch of people who somehow 'get off' on being abusive and outrageous - possibly because it's something they would never dare do face-to-face or perhaps because social media amplifies an innate meanness. Either way, I'm an electronic engineer, hardware and software developer, and I would be pleased to have someone like you as a colleague. Keep up the fantastic work and, as always, focus on the positive.
Loved that. I've always thought the term 'layout' came from the process of taking your bits of track and 'laying them out' in your chosen design. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'd expect the vast majority of these to be on the floor like yours, purely because of the space required. That, to me, is the archetypal layout. PS: My stuff has lived on baseboards for most of my life, but still gets covered in cat/dog hairs and dust. I sometimes wonder if model trains were invented to sell vacuum cleaners😉
I was stationed in Holy loch Scotland in the 80s with the United States Navy. (Yes, I am one of those cheeky yanks). I acquired the railway hobby with a small Intercity 125 set from Hornby. By this time I actually scratch build locomotives using brass or nickel silver. My latest is an LMS 8F. I tip my hat to you and your reviews of locomotives and the views of your layout. I love watching and getting an idea of what's new and improved or new and not-so-great. I hope this finds you in good health and high spirits! Cheers Mate!
Sam, adding my voice to chorus of support already offered, I’m black British, in professional job, do not own a train never owned a model train and lastly in the older age range of the spectrum. I really enjoy your reviews, in fact i have probably watched most if not all of your review for the last 2-3 years. If fact i can say that yours is one of the many subscribed channels that i watch religiously because your style and wit…and f if i were to ever consider taking up this hobby the highest praise i could give would be that your channel is the WHICH guide of what trains would be worth investing in those manufacturers or models to avoid.. Avid fan who loves the slippers i find it endearing
Oh, Sam...what can I say? I've only been watching your videos for the last year and you have been an inspiration for me to get back into the model railway hobby. I like the way that you present your videos, always sounding cheerful and often giving me a chuckle or two! You are doing something worthwhile and hopefully introducing others to the hobby. As is always the case, you will always get those who never do anything but criticise others no matter what they do. Just carry on what you're doing 'cos you're doing a fantastic job 👍
Hi Sam, I am from Sri Lanka. I am 73 years and am a subscriber to your channel. To tell you honestly, for a young person you re doing an excellent job and more importantly a great service to us modellers. I have found your videos extremely educational, informative and entertaining. Better than watching a TV serial LOL. I am really hurt and upset that people chose to be nasty. If they do not like your channel, then I tell them, "for god's sake leave and go elsewhere". Frankly Sam, for a young person, I admire that you have invested a tremendous amount in buying the models, giving us who wish to learn an insight of your many years of experience. To me you are a professional who knows what you are demonstrating, describing in detail all that one needs to know. Its really sad that people chose to insult you and be mean. Dear Sam, make this your last Video to answer critics and "meany Meanies"and just stop there. Carry on your wonderful presentations. I enjoy them and learn a lot. If I did have money I would have donated to your channel but at 73 years and living in a country like Sri Lanka, its difficult. PLease carry on full steam ahead. I am a member of our Model Railroad Association and one or two of our members like to complain or run down another Sri Lanka Modeller, to which I have replied, "I just dont care" as I have a wonderful experience with that Modeller. Oh dear it raised a barrage of insult and threats how i should behave just because I hate backbiting, Just like whats happening to you. Likewise, Sam, watching you with the young Lady who is reading out those meany comments, I can see your pain. Sam Dear Young mn, just carry on. I enjoy your channel very much ad so do your many subscribers and also if people didn't like your channel they would not be making donations. PLease make this your last video to explain yourself to those "meanies". Carry on your excellent work. Its just great. Ignore the Trash. Faizal Hathy, Sri Lanka.🤩
Hi Sam. I'd been watching the Hornby: A Model World show on the telly and then stuff on YT about trains and stuff. I don't collect trains or anything, but I just wanted to tell you that your YT videos are so professional. Beautifully lit and scripted (Eh? What script?😃) and so well filmed. They are watchable for everyone. Keep up the great work|
Sam, I haven’t really been into model trains as of late, but for half a decade now I have greatly admired you, your channel, and your layout. Your channel pretty much got me into the hobby, and to this day I still watch the Salvage or Scrap series and find it greatly entertaining. Don’t let the haters get to you, and thank you for the years of learning, laughs, and memories.
sam i think your analysis of current model rail products is the most informative on youtube, you are a champion of fair play for the community, something no one else does, you are a very mature young man and i guess some people would be jealous of that, dont stop what you do better than anyone else.
I don't have a big fancy layout and have always been relegated to the living room carpet, but it has never diminished my love of playing with trains. Watching Sam do much the same as myself has always been inspiring to me. Keep up the good work!
This is a video I never expected, people are just wanting attention and wanting you to react, just focus on the positive things and just smile. Have a great day!
@@Tonyr2 when they see him smile they go NO I WANT HIM CRY. That's how you get rid of trolls actually smile and take noteworthy things about what they said
Yes true - I am careful not to give the trolls a platform, but I also want to explain my point of view for the commonly raised points, just so the decent people can understand why I do things the way I do! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Consummate presentation and editing of (as ever) of a worthwhile dissection of superficial criticisms. There’s some big words for you! Chloe and yourself didn’t pick up on it but what was this about ‘professional Railway modeller’? It’s a hobby for goodness sake and we can all enjoy it in our own preferred way. Please carry on doing exactly what you’re doing. I won’t want to buy 90% of the models you review but I watch all of your videos because I always learn something useful from every one of them. Have a great day!
As for the layout, I believe it’s like the ultimate one to test locos: if it can make it there, it can make it anywhere. And wear those slippers! You have a right to be comfortable!! Just know that there are people who have nothing but the utmost respect for you. ❤
Absolutely David - yep, when a loco works well on my track, we know it's a solid runner! haha yep - got to love my slippers... got them on right now ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam's Trains is amongst the very best channels on UA-cam and I'm very glad I found this channel several years back. I've watched more videos from Sam than any other channel on UA-cam. Keep up the wonderful work and the outstanding, in-depth reviews and maintenance videos, Sam!
@@SamsTrains Well, would you do someday a benchmark on sleepers ? I'm a socks and linoleum/wooden floor guy at home, that would interest be to buy the best model for my use !
I'm not in to trains, I stumbled upon your channel when you reviewed a resin printer. To me, you come across as someone who is clearly passionate about his hobby and to see some of these criticisms is churlish in the extreme. I like your responses to this nonsense from the keyboard warriors, keep up the good work, 141k subscribers says a lot! And shout out to your partner for her clear support!
sam, you're definitely the most positive person ive seen in the model train community on youtube, pretty sure most of us love to see you create more content
Nice to see you and your "Other Half" answering comments. Personally, I have found all your reviews interesting and informative. I have made some of my purchases based on your reviews, and I have not been let down. Thank you, Sam.,
Sam your content is excellent and appeals to all ages (I'm pushing 60). Yes you sometimes express a child like (but not childish) passion for your subject that might offend Proper Modellers (tm), but you bring that passion to both your praise and criticism and you always strive for fairness in both. Your reviews are a wonderful resource to model railroaders of all skill levels. Please keep up the good work. And thank you Chloe for sharing Sam with us.
That's lovely to hear Pat - and I'm very guilty of being childishly passionate, but I quite like that feeling the hobby gives me and I hope it never stops! Many thanks for the support, Cheers, Sam :)
What a wonderful video. Loved the way you addressed so many topics ( I especially liked -"I'll be alright without you..."🙂). I heard this years ago & it helps me - " Hurt people Hurt people" - it's so true, sad but true. You have 129,000 subscribers so you're doing something right. God Bless You!
10:48 - Headphone warning! 😅 I've revived my love for the hobby in the last 18 months after 10 years of collecting/playing guitars and to be honest I don't think I would of without this channel. I think you put it rightly there's something for everyone in terms of content for all ages and abilities and likewise I would not consider myself a layout builder neither, despite having a few layouts in my life... and the first thing I did in the new house I bought was run my model trains... on the floor! :D (disclaimer - layout in the works, partner permitting). I (like many) have loved seeing where this channel has grown for a hobby which has become more niche but like Francis Bourgeois (TikTok Trainspotter) lets keep going with making model and real trains cool eh? That would be a mad collab. Keep going man! Next up should be some Sam’sTrains slippper merch? Cheers! Tom
What I particularly like about your channel is the honesty with shop bought items. The magazines get a manufacturer chosen item that works perfectly, which is not necessarily the item you will purchase in the shop.
I agree on that front. I have lost count of reading model railway magazines with statements like “the cab front is completely the wrong shape and the wheels fell off…..but we can forgive them this minor error for giving us this loco in BR blue” 😂
Thanks Rob - yes you do feel pressure to be positive when you're given/loaned a sample for free... so I bypass that by just buying the models myself now, and it's so much better. I feel free to be honest, and viewers know that I'm reviewing as a customer, and not in partnership with a manufacturer :D I think the magazines tend to focus on issues of accuracy/detailing, and avoid the important stuff like quality, mechanism and value... the things that I find viewers care most about! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, I will never look at getting a train set or layout but both myself and wife love watching your channel each week, don’t stop or change anything, would be interested in seeing a behind the scenes video of the whole process you go though to produce these. Good to see Chloe on screen as she adds to your channel
Sam you have to hear know that your videos actually inspired me to engage in this hobby! Added to which you have literally saved me at least a thousand pounds or so with your sound advise. You are a young entrepreneur with knowledge, humour and enthusiasm. You are following your passion, so stick at it ! I truly truly think you'd be a great TV presenter! Sams Trains is fast becoming an institution!
Sam, you are brilliant. Your reviews are very interesting, very professionally done, and your engineering and video-editing skills deserve the highest praise. Carry on the good work.
Hi Sam, I’ve never commented on one of your video’s but I have been watching for over 2 years and I’ve always enjoyed your content. I don’t have a lay out, I don’t have any model trains and I don’t have the time or money to invest into the hobby. However, watching your video’s makes me feel connected to the hobby without needing to spend money on it! All I see - and I’m sure 99% of people will agree - is a passionate, knowledgeable and all round decent guy. Keep up the good work and don’t even bat an eye-lid to any negative comments. Cheers. Ps - I will start spending money on the hobby eventually, thanks to your video’s but I have a young family so as you can imagine the 2 don’t go hand in hand!
I have a young family and my 3 year old son is obsessed with trains and Thomas. We have a 1st radius loop with some sidings and an old Hornby Thomas. All 2nd second hand. We both love it.
I’ve watched for about a year or two now and I can’t see why people dislike you, you’re very informative and knowledgeable about the hobby and very entertaining to watch, overall a very humble and down to earth person. Not to mention you’ve inspired me to get into the hobby and I’ve just purchased my first starter set plus a class 37 loco.
Sam's Trains has been my default resource for reviews for many years and I've never questioned your legitimacy or knowledge. I'm not in your league for collecting, but have passed the 100 loco milestone. I've also never bothered subscribing - that has now been addressed. Keep up the pleasant and informative reviews and thank you for all the past ones. 🙂
You make great videos Sam. You are both knowledgeable and engaging and your enthusiasm is infectious in a very good way. Please keep up the good work. All the best to you and Chloe. Retired physics teacher and born again model train enthusiast.
Hi Sam, I have been watching your channel for a number of years and I have to say with a 129,000 subscribers you must be doing something right, and I think your videos are very informative. Your critiquing of model railway products gives modelers and especially those just starting out in the hobby a host of information to assist them in enjoying this hobby. No matter what you you do in life there will always be a small number of small minded people who will make mean comments just for the sake of it, it is just part of their weird take on life. Ignore them and keep doing what you do. 99% of us love what you do. Cheers Greg
My family and I are living in Canada and operate on a limited budget. Your reviews are great for making informed purchases, which is crucial when living somewhere without a 00 retailer, and being unable to see physical products. Keep up the good work Sam!
I agree with you! I'm in Nova Scotia and watching these videos really help finding what models to purchase and run! Thanks to Sam, I love my J70 and 812 Class!
Around the carpet comments and you planning for a future layout, I actually look forward to this. Watching somebody try new products, processes, techniques and products (and perhaps struggle at times) is both interesting and a good way to learn. when you have the space, I think it would bring a new dimension to things.
Sam, I'm not even a model train enthusiast. I don't have a railway and just have a 040 Pickett and some Bristol coal wagons that goes around my Christmas tree annually. Yet I watch sooooo much of your content none the less because I love your positivity, sense of humour and just the format of your reviews. I think for me that says a lot. I watch a lot of formula 1 channels and cycling content as I'm active in these areas.... and I watch Sam's Trains because you're great!
You are always worth a watch. People do not understand what goes into the editing etc when making videos. When i started ‘trash to track’ i hd no idea how much it would take over my time! So keep going mate. Your reviews are thorough and i do turn to them if i ever need an opinion on a model. 👍🏻
Hi Sam. My friend and I have recently got back into model trains after many years away from the hobby. Your videos have been a huge help to us both. Keep up the good work ! :)
I first watched one of your demonstrations I wasn’t sure about it as your format was different, so I just went about my business, BUT then I saw a pop up, and i decided to subscribe as you took time to slowly explain and describe to idiots like me who has limited knowlage as I used to have a 1977 Hornby silver jubileee Pullman set in 1977 age 7 and now I find your accent and and patients rewardable
oh lord...I'm 61 and have been fussing about with railroads model and full sized, including stints as President of a local operating railroad museum (in the UK a preservation railway), and a LOT of people just grouse to hear themselves speak. You sir, do a really good job and provide a useful service thru your reviews of equipment. Keep going!
Hi Sam, I love your channel, I’m 51 and have been in the hobby since childhood. I love your channel, don’t let the haters and rivet counters get any traction in your thoughts, they’ve nothing else to do but complain and feel aggrieved for their sad and pointless lives. No doubt they’re the sad lonely individuals I see at shows on their own smelling of body odour and cheese and onion sandwiches. Keep up the good work!
Your content and positive spirit have continued to be a source of happiness, positivity and brightness in my life for the five plus years I’ve had the pleasure of watching you. Here’s to many more, Sam! Never stop being yourself!!
You run a wholesome, inclusive and informative channel Sam; please don't change that for the vanishingly small minority who choose to snipe from behind the anonymity of "the socials". Your attention to detail and honest, independent reviews are hallmarks of your 'product' and a big part of your success. BTW - 'Chloe Trains' made me smile 😄.
Thanks so much Rob - ahh no changes from me mate, you've got to do things the way you think is best haven't you? Thank you so much... and yes, reckon we'll have to start her a channel ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam, I'm in my 70s, and I just want to say thank you both for the professional way you have addressed this subject. Yes, we all have a choice about what we watch, and I'm happy to fast forward a bit now and then! Well done, both of you x
Been watching your videos for a little while now and as a relative beginner to modelling, although my interest has been long. I find you very informative and aimed at all levels. If people find them uninteresting and of no value, then they should move elsewhere. Keep up the good work 👍
Hi Sam don't let the complainers get you down, they obviously leave these comments as they have nothing better to do in their sad lives. Your channel is well put together with interesting, amusing and informative videos. The only complaint I might have it you have made me spend hundreds of pounds on new models (but they are worth it and also prevented me from buying bad models!) Keep up the good work
Hi Sam, I don't watch each and every vid, but I do love the ones I watch a lot and they exude professionalism and your enthusiam for the hobby. Also, it's a lot of fun to watch you occasionally come up with some wacky experiment or theatrical story, which makes your contest some of the most varried in the model railway category.
I don't often comment on videos but you absolutely need to know that I love your videos (especially the childish April fool's ones). Your reviews are useful but, like any review, are an opinion. I love your whole set up as an "everyman" (which we know is all an act, eh?) because the standard set by "professionals" can sometimes be, whilst inspiring, overwhelming. Sadly, it is a fact if modern society that if you put yourself out there, someone will criticise. Just keep doing what you're doing, and only take onboard what is useful. Thank you for so many hours of entertainment and information. PS - never get rid of the carpet!
Sam keep up the great work - there will always be haters who just gotta hate. Your videos have assisted me immensely with this fantastic hobby. Many thanks,
A layout on the carpet, with a portion properly decorated. Just right! The S curve and the hill do an outstanding job of punching through the hype and showing what works and doesn't work. I can find other channels that have a perfect scene, or massive trackage, but this, what you do, is just right. You've saved me from making some mistakes, and explained how to correct the ones I've already made. Thanks, mate, and carry on!
We really needed this, it's truly excellent. Your sense of humour etc is truly brilliant! We need to see more of Chloe as well, you two could do a couple of livestreams? Anyway, just sent you an email.
Straight up I've always enjoyed watching your reviews. Coming back into the hobby after a long time out I found your videos the most honest regarding the value of the models before passing over my hard earned cash.
Sam, your reviews are the most thorough, best-informed and fairest I've encountered (and I've seen hundreds in magazines and videos). Your forensic examination of locomotive mechanisms puts almost all the others to shame. Under your guidance, I've been able to make far wiser spending decisions - unlike certain establishment reviewers whose failure to identify/report poor quality is an embarrassment. Just keep on doing the fine things you are doing. Cheers to Chloe and yourself.
As an American, British people, have such a calm, pliable, polished, reserved, and heavy in the manners. But Sam killed me with the "in your face bit"! I don't think I will get over that, for a while! 🤣🤣🤣
sam thankyou for your wonderful and professional content and thankyou for being such an inspiring human being! :) it's a pleasure to see you succeed and keep your stuff together as a young person, like myself, in the face of childish and really mean and totally loughable criticism from model railway "purists", i think that everybody should enjoy and practice the hobby so that he/she simply enjoys it, rather than losing precious time pointing fingers at each other under the cover of internet anonimity! i wish you all the best and keep up the good work! greetings to both of you from italy ;)
I regularly watch reviews that you do and always find them helpful. I've been in the hobby for 44 years now and prices today are shocking so the honest well guided advice you give is well appreciated. Whether you spend your life making exact scale replicas of railway things or run a train around a circle of track, if you get enjoyment from it isn't that what the hobby is all about!.
The reason I love Sam’s trains so much is because even tho my own trains and layout are long gone, each one of Sam’s videos is a tangible link back to better times when I would play and enjoy them. Sam you and your lovely girlfriend are fantastic, and the true fans of this channel will always support you and the great content you make !
I’ve loved watching your channel ever since I started in the hobby. Your reviews have helped me pick which British locos to spend my hard-earned money importing to the states, and your comedic videos are always brilliantly entertaining. Keep on chugging, we’ve got you from across the pond.
Sam, love your channel and I have been an avid viewer since I got back into the hobby about 5 years. You make great, varied and authentic content. Please continue doing this !
Sam don't let anyone make you feel embarrassed about your carpet floor layout. That's what I've had before I was finally able to put together some picnic tables for a table top layout. There's always a group of gatekeepers that try as hard as possible to keep newcomers out of the hobby.
Always appreciate the high quality content you put out Sam and the work that goes into each one. My own railway is packed away so the servicing videos of yours will be invaluable when I try to (hopefully) get everything running again.
I'm a bit of a newcomer, and I'm beyond satisfied with the content that you create honestly. It's inspiring me to get started into the hobby, and makes me want to build my own layout, and run trains somewhat like you do. And I find it hard to believe people would actually think that you're not knowledgeable, and that your videos aren't helpful
Oh, how I feel your pain my friend! ;@) Funnily enough, I'm already planning a 'behind the scenes' video for January about a lot of the unseen expense and work that goes into what we do. I am in awe of how much work you put into this channel which, if I am not mistaken, is the biggest in its sector? I wonder why that might be? Just keep doing what you do.
Thanks Andrew - that sounds really interesting! haha yeah it is... but I got told off for acknowledging that, so I keep quiet about it now, haha!! ;D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam, your videos are so enjoyable, varied and personable and I think your model locomotive reviews are truly independent and capture what I think is the average modeller like me, living in Australia, wants to know. I particularly like your emphasis on what is,or should be value for money. Having Chloe’s care and support also shines through too. Please don’t worry about the .01%, your so appreciated.
I've only found out about your channel recently and while I do agree that some of your calls have been a bit heavy handed with ratings I love the content. I tend to fall asleep with your reviews running because its so genuine and lovely. My only real issue is being woken up by a train horn at 4am when I've forgotten to turn off autoplay but thats on me man. :D
Fair play to you Sam for answering your critics. I’ll be totally honest I couldn’t ‘buy into’ your early videos but I do think you’ve massively improved your content, style and delivery over the years and that’s why I now watch your videos. I like the fact that you are bringing valid points up for discussion (like is ‘Hornby TT a mistake’). I had been asking myself that same question just the other week. In answering the carpet criticism, I think this should have been a separate video, and should have been titled “OMG his trains run on carpet!” or “Trains VS Carpet- madness!!!” This probably would have generated your biggest audience yet! In watching this video I think I’ve seen the real ‘Sam’ and the banter between you and ‘Mrs Trains’ brought a smile to my face. I see you as the Wallace (without gromit) of the model railway world, complete with slippers of course. Keep up the great content, and don’t change for anyone mate 👍.
129K subscribers seems adequate proof of 'general appreciation' - even when the action takes place on the 'carpet'. ( for the time being - aha ! ) And I like comfortable slippers too ! I wish you - both - success, all the best and Happy Model Railroading - on whatever aspects of this hobby you stand for and that we like consequently. Kind regards, Filip
Hey Sam, just want to say, whatever the criticism, know that I’ve been watching your content for a while and being someone who has been fascinated by trains since early childhood, your content is very entertaining and satisfying to watch and your enthusiasm about the hobby is unmatched. Much love.
I have just two critic points: 1. Not enough experiments, your experiments are great, just think about Solar-train or can a loco run underwater. 2. Yes running your trains on a carpet is rubbish, if you have the space and time to do a nice layout.
Sam and Chloe are a great team, my best wishes to both of you. Ok you run trains on carpet…that’s how we ALL started! I do think people mistake your enthusiasm for immature but if they took the time to watch reviews an intelligent person would see you tell it how it is and deliver an honest and appropriate review. I’m not into the whole unboxing thing but if you don’t always know what you are buying (it happens) it’s good to know what things should be. Keep doing your thing, Hornby TT 120 has pulled me back in to the hobby.. hopefully there will be some TT 120 track going down on your mum’s carpet soon 🤣
As a nearly 70 year-old, coming back into the hobby in the last few years, yours has been one of the top ‘go to’ channels for me to watch. I can’t stand the reviewers who are sent a product by a manufacturer and no matter what give it a 10/10 (or close to it). I have bought and decided not to buy locos and rolling stock based on your reviews. Thank you. Ignore the noise. As they used to say in my world, follow the data. If your subscribers continue to grow you must be doing something right.
Sam and Chloe, lovely to see you both on the video today. I found your channel a couple of months ago and really enjoy it. Can I just say that you're one of the least egotistical people on UA-cam. You are humble and keen to admit the limit of your knowledge where you feel it's necessary. Your presentation style is always eloquent and extremely well annunciated. Your reviews are easy to follow, carefully planned and researched and follow the clear and logical format we've come to appreciate. Your technical knowledge is excellent and your fault finding methods too. Keep doing what you're doing and don't change a thing. Ignore the keyboard warriors except - perhaps that if they do insist on watching, it's good for the channel anyway. We do look forward to "The layout" though 😉😂❤️ Edit: You remind me of Maarten Heilbron for your professionalism - my "go to" channel for photographic equipment reviews 👍
Thank you very much!! That means a lot to read, so glad you like the videos/format. "The Layout" will definitely be coming one day!! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Oh well Sam, your content to us seems that it is quite unique in a sense that it is a healthy mix of playfulness, cheerfulness, seriousness and professionalism in execution. You do stand out on YT for that particular reason. You are you. Sadly, the internet generally is ill suited for exchanging thoughts. Since body language in comments is lacking, it is of course fully up to personal interpretation what the intention is/was to be. Unfortunately, and additionally, many people trivially easily project themselves as the to-be default think instead of even trying to grasp the other person's perspective. I.e., people can sometimes judge too easily without a healthy balance of empathy, and the internet in particular can take away personal ethical filters too easily. This is exactly why we are not active on social media at all. I’ve only created an account on YT to engage on a few selected channels. You are you, and we all go through the academy of life… Your channel simply is a delight. Thank you for doing these shows.
Keep doing what you're doing Sam, I always enjoy the content you put out. I'm not a Railway modeler...yet. I started watching your videos during lockdown and am about to come back to the hobby after nearly 40 years and that's in no small part down to watching you amongst others. I went to Warley last weekend and will be starting my own layout soon. If I had one criticism it'd be the birthday song......
Thank you all so much for all the amazing comments - I never expected this video to go down like this! I hope you enjoyed the video and maybe learned something new... thank you all for being awesome! And to the 0.01% of you who are mean... thank you too for keeping me on my toes!! 🤣
@@davidhall5868 Agreed. We love your show and want to show the love.
That last comment, did Chloe write it???🤣
Kind regards,
Paul.
Take care,
Thanks for the videos!!!!
Now we just need to wait for a good comments video. Lol.
Bless you for that, that's really lovely to hear - thank you my friend!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Sam - you're one of the best examples of a person doing what they love. Never change man.
Wow you have 1842x the amount of subscribers that I have!!
Didn’t expect jago here, nice surprise I guess.
Not gonna lie, the rivet counters who get mad at layouts on carpet are the definition of they don’t know how to have fun and make basic observations. It’s very clear that in your videos you have a deep love and care for trains. Keep doing what you’re doing Sam! I think you’re a cracking UA-camr who’s inspired many!👑
just subscibe to rugrunner magazine
Yeah that's right - this is all about having fun, and everyone should be free to have fun in the way they prefer... and they are!!
Thanks so much for your support, Sam :)
Agreed. Model railroading is all about having fun doing what you want to do.
Yes I too find them comfortable too. I think he's genuinely nice guy.
I’m pretty much the same as you really, been watching for a few years now, not really an enthusiast, just find it interesting. But I love watching Sams content as it’s varied, interesting, fun and a pretty happy place to be. Hope you’re doing well (o:

The message I get from your 'carpet layout' is "you can have fun with any level of model train layout." That is a message worth hearing over and over and over again.
Love your comment! Maybe a “carpet layout” is all someone CAN do or wants to do - for now…why put down someone for it?

Sam, just be YOU !
I'm 55 and just got back into the hobby because of your fun, upbeat and authentic approach!

Happy Christmas 🎄
I've got 20 years on you and agree completely.
Carry on with the great work
I wish more good hearted people realized this..
I think you're right John - very well said, thanks for the kind words!!

Yeah you're probably right - thank you very much, I truly value your support!

I like your responses to this nonsense from the keyboard warriors, keep up the good work, 141k subscribers says a lot! And shout out to your partner for her clear support!
sam, you're definitely the most positive person ive seen in the model train community on youtube, pretty sure most of us love to see you create more content
I don’t even have a train set, I just like your vids mate. You’re a really nice guy and knowledgeable with it.
Nice to see you and your "Other Half" answering comments. Personally, I have found all your reviews interesting and informative. I have made some of my purchases based on your reviews, and I have not been let down. Thank you, Sam.,
Exactly! Great info and in depth product reviews
Yes, so glad when YTers include family members - it emphasises that they are just as human as the rest of us.
That's great to hear, thank you so much!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Many thanks for the support,
Cheers,
Sam :)
You have inspired us over the years, lovely voice, nice clear diction and always entertaining. It’s a pleasure watch your stuff!
I've revived my love for the hobby in the last 18 months after 10 years of collecting/playing guitars and to be honest I don't think I would of without this channel.
I feel free to be honest, and viewers know that I'm reviewing as a customer, and not in partnership with a manufacturer :D
I think the magazines tend to focus on issues of accuracy/detailing, and avoid the important stuff like quality, mechanism and value... the things that I find viewers care most about!
Bless you David, you're very welcome here any time!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam - I'll keep it simple - we love your work, your passion and your humour! Keep doing what you like doing.
Your fiance is a patient woman.
Thank you very much! Yes Chloe is very patient!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cheers.
Ps - I will start spending money on the hobby eventually, thanks to your video’s but I have a young family so as you can imagine the 2 don’t go hand in hand!
same here mate. I really liked thomas as a kid, why are these HO scale bachmann prices so insaneee
Take a look at Sam's Inglenook puzzle. Fun for all ages, takes up very little space and at very little cost 😁
Free speech comes with its drawbacks. Social media gives voice to the socially ignored. Enjoy the channel. Keep up the good work!
Thanks very much Richard - physics was always my favourite subject at school, you're very lucky!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Agreed - I'm in Ontario and his reviews are priceless when scrolling through Hatton's looking for bargains.
Me too! In Vancouver
That is sweet, Sam really believes he is not going to stay in the loft forever. As if those who are keeping him there is going to ever let him out. 🥰
Ahh fantastic - that's so interesting, very glad you just like the videos, that's awesome!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That's fantastic to hear - hope you have a great time! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
And what's wrong with cheese and onion sandwiches?
Your content and positive spirit have continued to be a source of happiness, positivity and brightness in my life for the five plus years I’ve had the pleasure of watching you. Here’s to many more, Sam! Never stop being yourself!!
Thank you so much - that's really lovely to hear!! Really appreciate the support
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thank you so much... and yes, reckon we'll have to start her a channel ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam, I'm in my 70s, and I just want to say thank you both for the professional way you have addressed this subject. Yes, we all have a choice about what we watch, and I'm happy to fast forward a bit now and then! Well done, both of you x
Thank you very much - absolutely - you have the right to pick and choose whatever you watch, and I'm glad you do!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The only complaint I might have it you have made me spend hundreds of pounds on new models (but they are worth it and also prevented me from buying bad models!)
Keep up the good work
Hi Sam, I don't watch each and every vid, but I do love the ones I watch a lot and they exude professionalism and your enthusiam for the hobby.
Also, it's a lot of fun to watch you occasionally come up with some wacky experiment or theatrical story, which makes your contest some of the most varried in the model railway category.
Bless you, that's lovely to hear - thank you so much! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Always a good day when Sam uploads!
Thank you Nick! :D
I totally agree!
We really needed this, it's truly excellent. Your sense of humour etc is truly brilliant! We need to see more of Chloe as well, you two could do a couple of livestreams? Anyway, just sent you an email.
haha thank you so much!! Yes we'll have to bring Chloe back in the new year! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Straight up I've always enjoyed watching your reviews.
Coming back into the hobby after a long time out I found your videos the most honest regarding the value of the models before passing over my hard earned cash.
Couldn't agree more (from another returnee)!
Thanks very much Tim - wow that's quite some time! Exactly, it is all about the enjoyment!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That's absolutely awesome Henry - so glad my videos can do that for you!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Your videos have massively helped me in getting into the hobby in my 30's, really informative and done with some fun
Please continue doing this !
you're honestly such a sweet man
i honestly think i could never come close to hating you in a million years
keep on going!!!
You truly live rent free in some folks heads. All of your content has been most enjoyable especially with the new 'co-host'! Keep up the fine work!
Thanks Andrew - that sounds really interesting! haha yeah it is... but I got told off for acknowledging that, so I keep quiet about it now, haha!! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
10:55 You had me in stitches. Sam, I've learned a lot about British modeling watching your videos. Great channel!
haha that's great to hear - cheers Norbert!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
129K subscribers seems adequate proof of 'general appreciation' - even when the action takes place on the 'carpet'. ( for the time being - aha ! )
And I like comfortable slippers too !
I wish you - both - success, all the best and Happy Model Railroading - on whatever aspects of this hobby you stand for and that we like consequently.
Kind regards, Filip
hahaha thanks a lot Filip - this is true!! Bless you my friend, really appreciate your support,
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam, just want to say, whatever the criticism, know that I’ve been watching your content for a while and being someone who has been fascinated by trains since early childhood, your content is very entertaining and satisfying to watch and your enthusiasm about the hobby is unmatched. Much love.
Your videos are great! Your voice is calming and also entusiastic. Love the videos, keep up the good work!
Edit: voice is incredibly calming at 10:49
I have just two critic points:
Thanks so much Matthew - it is indeed how we all started actually! Thanks for sharing!
Cheers,
Sam :)
We do look forward to "The layout" though 😉😂❤️
Edit: You remind me of Maarten Heilbron for your professionalism - my "go to" channel for photographic equipment reviews 👍
Sam, the sass in this video is absolutely perfect. This was really necessary.
