Just found your channel about a week ago because I recently got an offer from my neighbor who flips cars. He saw what I did for my wheels with rattle cans and asked me if I wanted to paint his cars. Now I am buying everything I would need to paint quick flips, starter everything. Harbor freight junk. But we have to start somewhere, and most of the reason I'm willing to sacrifice so much is because you gave me the confidence. I love your videos, and I have already learned so much. You are a great teacher!
I painted two full exterior Volkswagen polo from the 1990’s using spray cans after watching and learning from your videos. The results were outstanding. Restoration and detailing if anyone wants to have a look.
Hi mate can you put a link to your channel in here? I've searched you but too many vids come up but none seem to be from your account? I'd be happy to have a look as I have a similar plan following Brian's techniques. Thanks
Hello mate. II’m thinking to do that too! I’ve paintings my bumpers and, being silver, they’ve ended up not being a match to the rest of the car! Doh! Hearing that you”ve done it and happy with the results is inspiring me to give it a go. The bumpers turned out decent, so why wouldn’t the rest? Could you link me to see your vids of that please? Cheers, Dave
Tekton is great for hand tools. Durablock for sanding blocks, harbor freight da sander will do fine for entry level. Astro pneumatic makes good entry level affordable spray guns/ other air tools you want. Harbor freights body hammers work just fine for basic metal work.
Keep in mind I love this channel as well but expect a lot of Eastwood and kovax sponsorship. Eastwood is hit or miss, and I’ve never tried kovax sandpaper so I can’t speak to it.
@Paint Society please include an entry level compressor you would recommend. I've been looking for videos on this topic but everyone skips the compressor recommendations. Thanks for being an excellent instructor.
You're so right about wearing gloves. I've seen countless DIY videos where the content creator immerses his hands in motor oil, transmission fluid, brake cleaner, WD-40, etc. and I'm sitting there cringing. These chemicals all have harmful ingredients that are rapidly absorbed through the skin. I personally wash my hands immediately if I should happen to get anything on them while working in the garage. And I wear gloves. So thank you for this.

I understand the garage is still in progress, but would like to see videos documenting that process. Choice of finishes, types of equipment you looking at getting and reasons why. Also color schemes for painted surfaces, because part of painting cars at home is getting your home setup right or as best as what will fit into budget. Love the channel.
Hi Brian! Great to see you in your newly fitted garage, looking good (and somewhere of your own to do your own filming continuance without needing to worry about usage by others). Thanks for sharing 👍
Brian, your timing was impeccable mate! I'm at this exact stage on my Falcon project here in Australia and was wondering whether i should start by blocking or going straight for the sander. Question has been answered. Great Vid!!

I enjoy you showing us weekend warriors how to look good. I'm looking for a How To video on how to paint over an original 65 year old enamel & lacquer paint job that has panels that still look pretty good. Of course there are rust spots in the usual areas that will be repaired as well. After sanding, what's steps are next with what kind of sealer, primer, paint? Thx 4 taking the time to share.
Great instructor/video! I WONDERED why u were spraying so close until u indicated it was windy. Easy for an amateur like me to get runs. Thanks again for using tools for the average person. I'm not in the process of painting, just find your videos very interesting. 👍
Hello Brian thanks for all the videos. Idea for future videos: Compare different types of paints and how they work (different brands of paint, how they are mixed, how they turn out, cost vs durability, which work best with budget gun, mid-range or top end spray guns). I'm doing my first base/clear paint job and finding relevant info about this topic is difficult. And the paint makers I'm looking at have sites that are way too complicated. I've got a recommendation to use PPG or Sikkens.
Great video and great point on the cost. It's extremely costly to do a entire car with these. This product is great for one time use just to get one panel nice for someone with limited resources or tools
Yea it's wild. If you were to do a actually restoration which requires a nice 2-3 coats of primer fill and block, you would blow 40-60 a panel just on primer using this stuff 😂😂😂😂😂😂 but like we both said great for small one time repairs
This is a lot more learnable than some of the other videos I’ve watched. I’ve been trying my darnedest to get a decent job from rattle can colour shift paint with unsatisfactory results. The whole panel gets ruined by a few wrinkled areas. After so many attempts I’ve stripped it down to original paint. I needed to address some rock chips so now I’m ready for colour coat. Even though I haven’t sanded past the original coat is it advisable to prime again or just go ahead with the colour coat. I’ve used both Tremclad and 2k gloss black for the base coat. This time I’m using the 2k gloss black for the first coat. Hopefully no wrinkles. Then the colour shift. The problem is that when I’ve laid down clear coats, the next day I will find some wrinkled spots. This is so frustrating. It invades my dreams. Have you any advice you could pass on to help me with this? I would really appreciate it.

Brian: What does high build primer mean? Is it a thick coating? Why a thicker coating then a one K? When do you use high build and when the opposite? Appreciate your time and videos!❤
That 7gen Accord Coupe in the background looking clean!! Been watching your channel trying to apply everything from your videos to my 06 Accord Coupe with a full HFP kit. Still in the body work phase but your videos have helped me a lot Brian and I thank you for that!!
I have the 03-05 kit on mine that I had to make some modifications to the front lip for it to fit properly, but it’s fitted now. Mine’s also a Nighthawk Black Pearl.

Thanks for the video! I recently painted a fiberglass front bumper cover using your techniques, and it didn't come out as well as I had hoped. All my fault, of course. There were a lot of imperfections in the primer it came with, so the paint really didn't go on evenly, and some of the "blemishes" are still visible. (Note: I've also painted a spoiler, rear bumper covers, and two side rocker panels, and they all came out great, because I prepped properly first!). So, I want to redo the front panel. Should I just sand it down to the base coat, smoothing out the imperfections, and re spray and re-clear coat? Thanks, again!
This could be useful for my brother. His 1986 VW T3 Bluestar has failing clear coat on 80% of the roof plus 4 large square patches where the paint has either turned white (bus is metallic blue) or come away from some dodgy repairs. He originally wanted it painted then laughed at the quotes so bought himself a roll of gloss black wrap to cover the whole roof. Temporary fix for a few years. I wonder if he could get a decent finish? His previous DIY painting job was his VW bay window camper where he rattle canned the white door tops. Came out really good all be it a lot less area to paint than a roof.

Enjoy all ur videos im learning alot feeling confident on my secont time spraying a car. One question is if im going over a paint job with regular primer to block out. Would i need to put epoxy sealer before my basecoat this epoxy sealer seems intimidating to me
Hey brain, My question is have you ever sprayed water Bourne paints before?? Do you prefer solvent paint or water Bourne paints and what are the pros and cons between these two types of paints
Brian… you know what would be cool? A video series with a noob taking a car and prepping and repainting it. I’d probably ask questions people would be interested in too since I’m not a body man or professional painter by trade. And I’m not far from you. I think it would be cool
Hello Brian I have a 2002 BMW 530i in titanium silber color. Can you recommend what type of paint, sealer, clear and where to purchase. Thanks to you I’m going to DYI it in a home garage. I live in Houston,Texas. Thanks man your content is very inspiring and concise, thanks for sharing your experience!
Years ago, the Kirby vacuum company had a promotional video out there demonstrating the various attachments. One of the attachments is a sander and to demonstrate it they showed a guy sanding down his entire car and painting it in his garage with the Kirby paint gun. They show the car from a distance so the car looked great, and when they show closeups of how good the paint looked it was a different car. No one can find the video anywhere though. Not on UA-cam or any other video hosting site. I've heard of a few guys trying to find it unsuccessfully. It's like it vanished into thin air
Would be neat to see you do a video on motorcycle fairings! Curious how it would go doing their ABS fairings (Aftermarket) or stock (not sure the material totally)

Please do a similar video where the paint is OK and only the clearcoat needs to be re-done Like, the spoiler on my MIata had some spots with deteriorating clearcoat. I thought I could compound down to a layer of clear that was still good, but ended up picking up some paint color on my pad and stopped. The paint looks fine, so I think I just need to re-clear. Should I just wet-sand the whole spoiler with 600, mask it off from the rest of the car, then spray it with a can of 2K clear?
@@PaintSociety Oh dang, ok. Is the issue that the new clear won't stick to the scuffed-up old clear? Or does the final result not look good because of the old clear being scratched and the new clear not perfectly filling in the scratches? Or something else?
I started watching your tutorials last summer. Since it's getting nicer out I'm back on research for spay gun purchase, I saw the $200.00 Iwata 1.3 and am wondering about the kit that converts it to a 1.8 or 2.0.
Hello, just painted some exhaust tips, but used non-high heat primer by mistake. I did apply 5 coats of high heat paint over it. Insides were painted too. Am I facing any danger here? Thanks for your help 👍🏼
Hey Brian I have a question for you. I am going to repaint 2014 fusion with a few door dings to fix and some rock chipping on hood and bumper cover the clear coat is delaminated in some spots. The question is do I need to take the clear coat completely off the whole car or just in the delaminated spots. Can I spray base coat over sanded (with 400) and sealed clear coat? Thanks Love you work
Brian, I have some new (metal) panels that had EDP coating on it. I sprayed epoxy primer and am now wondering if I need to spray a urethane primer as well or if the epoxy primer is enough before spraying base coat. Since the panels are new, they're perfectly straight and won't need blocking.
I was wondering if you could answer a question for me, how do you guys paint the inside of the door trim or things like underneath the hood to match the exterior paint? I know everything looks great when you do a paint job but if you pop the hood, everything looks different not sure if anyone has ever messed with this was just wondering how guys finish out the job under the hood and on the door trim inside the gas cap, etc
Hi Brian. Thanks for another great video. On previous video you have said you like the primer to land in a P320 scratch. Is there a specific reason you only sanding up to P220 before primer on this video?
I have painted a whole car before , a tremendous amount of work just getting it ready , a 35 Oldsmobile 3 window coupe . I wish I could have seen your videos before I painted that ,I don't remember if you tube was a reality then .I now have a 65 corvette coupe that could use a respray , I'm on the fence because of all the work , To get it done by a professtional is way out of this retiree's budget . Keeping the same color , could I just give it a good sanding , then sealer and paint . Or do I have to strip it all the way down to fiberglass ?
@paintsociety is it necessary to prime over existing paint without any rust or scratches? Can i just take off the clear coat and then repaint with top voat?
Brian! Speaking of entry level tools, im doing my first body/paint related job on my car this weekend. i have a 3m 6100 dual cartridge respirator with p100 and ov cartridges. do you think that will protect me while grinding sanding priming and painting?

Hey brother love your videos but I have a question. I bought a new hood for my daughter's BMW 328i and it came primered black, I bought the factory paint from paint direct but do I have to scuff that new primered hood with fine grit sand paper before I primer and paint the new hood and if so what grit sand paper do you recommend?
I love the video but this might not be the best comparison for painting metal hoods since you said yours was a different material. I powder coated for years and pretty sure if you tryed to overlap the layers as heavy as you did the paint will be uneven thickenss all around and probably get drips on metal. But I really liked apl the info and tips
Im getting a project car of mine sanded down for repaint. Theres a couple door dings etc, thats about it. the body guy said at the end it will be sealed with a 2k sealer. And my paint guy also said the same thing. Where im confused is, why is there no primer being used? Two different guys, not even related both said sealer, not primer. Someone educate me please lol.
Would u do this whole process for a after market hood that comes in blk already or would u just scuff with scotch tag and paint it? Or do I have to primer it any help would be gladly appreciated
Brian, once again, a great video lesson. Thank you. The paint on the hood of my 2008 Tacoma has chipped off the first 8 inches from the front of my hood. Your technique from this video would not work because the paint is also chipping off areas on the rest of the truck. The factory covered metal has that gray sealer exposed and in some areas the metal has begun to rust. For that type of tired paint will sanding down to bare metal with 80 grit be the better way to go? Then seal it with self etch primer or epoxy, before applying sandable primer, be the way to approach the refinish?
where im from, the paint prep spray is a lot more expensive and its quite hard to find. Would it be okay for my case to just go through more sand paper than usual instead? Will it negatively impact the prep? prior to sanding i wash the surface with dishsoap + water instead.
Did those chips near the front of the hood just go away with the 120 paper? You didn't need to fill them? That's what I'm dealing with right now on my DIY. In fact, once I started the sanding, I seemed to be creating more of those chips... I'm assuming that's the clear coat chipping away. How can I avoid this? Or what should I do about these chips? Thank you!

Since it's getting nicer out I'm back on research for spay gun purchase, I saw the $200.00 Iwata 1.3 and am wondering about the kit that converts it to a 1.8 or 2.0.
Would it be a bad thing to paint over the sanded black paint or it’s better to prime over the paint like u did?
In this condition. It needed primer
Are you spraying so close to the hood because of the wind? What do you recommend? Thank you!
Brilliant . Thanks alot.
Just what I was looking for. I have an ‘89 Toyota pickup- guessing that’s metal 😆. Would you suggest different grit for that?
Do a respray on a plastic bumper cover please!
Great Content! Can we get a spec and review of that Eastwood compressor?
Yes, soon
@paintsociety is it necessary to prime over existing paint without any rust or scratches? Can i just take off the clear coat and then repaint with top voat?
did you sand the primer after this? then put the top coat on? and then clear coat over that?
Brian! Speaking of entry level tools, im doing my first body/paint related job on my car this weekend. i have a 3m 6100 dual cartridge respirator with p100 and ov cartridges. do you think that will protect me while grinding sanding priming and painting?
I would recomemd Festool autoclean and esc 5mm throw sander. And 3m clean sand sanding blocks for your next vac systen brother
Do you have to get into the paint or can you do sand the clearcoat of the original surface and prime over that??
Now how would the process be for metal panels? I plan on painting my dashboard and window garnish moldings from my 1952 Chevy Styleline Deluxe.
Congratulations 🎉Great fan,🎖💫

Can you use the high build on spot repairs to feather (rather than an entire panel)? Also how thick can you go with this stuff?
Hey brother love your videos but I have a question. I bought a new hood for my daughter's BMW 328i and it came primered black, I bought the factory paint from paint direct but do I have to scuff that new primered hood with fine grit sand paper before I primer and paint the new hood and if so what grit sand paper do you recommend?
Can you do a video on how to this on a pure metal panel? I have a classic car I want to paint myself and want to make sure I paint it right.
How do you deal with the edges? Do you sand and prep the edges the same way? If not how far do you go?
I would rather hang the hood up and not flat but that’s just my preference.
Hey quick question I wanna spray bed liner on my truck and the clear coat is pretty bad what grit sandpaper should I use?
Would u do this whole process for a after market hood that comes in blk already or would u just scuff with scotch tag and paint it? Or do I have to primer it any help would be gladly appreciated
I have a 02 chevy Avalanche the hood needs painting can you do a video on how to DIY please and what do I needs to buy
Would love to know how much primer, paint and clearcoat you used.
Would this be the same procedure for a new Harwood fiberglass hood that is factory gel coated?
Now that the hood is done , please join us next week for the car that was right beside it to be painted too. !
thanks for watching
Did those chips near the front of the hood just go away with the 120 paper? You didn't need to fill them? That's what I'm dealing with right now on my DIY. In fact, once I started the sanding, I seemed to be creating more of those chips... I'm assuming that's the clear coat chipping away. How can I avoid this? Or what should I do about these chips? Thank you!
Hi Brian, my g35 aluminium hood paint peeled off in the front. What kind of stuff should i use? Thank you I appreciate your answer.
You didnt sand completely through the original clear coat? Will that affect the quality and longevity of the new paint?
