Brian, you are an amazing teacher. I have been watching your videos for a while and I have learned so much. I was able to paint my wife's silver rav4. You rock man.
Wow, I wish I knew this before I attempted to fix the roof of my Bimmer (Titanium Silver), yes the metallic particles highlight everything, including sanding scratches and the finest imperfections where the primer meets the paint!!!
Thank you so much for your videos, I have learnt so much from them. I have been a panel beater for 30 years and now thanks to you guys I can say i’m a very capable painter too! Thank you
I have a car that has body filler on one fender, hood, behind door, and both quarter panels as well as two new quarter panels, two new doors, new front bumper. Should I use high build primer over the body filler and then seal the rest?
Am I the only one that confused about the products used? Are you making a sealer out of paint itself buy just adding sealer harder and activator? Oris the sealant actually a sealant then you add the sealer activator and hardner?
Yes the “paint” is what he called “color,” ant the total mixing ratio is 3 parts color, one part hardener and one part activator. There are two different hardener/activator formulas; one formula makes a thicker (and sandable) primer, while the other formula make a thinner (not sandable) sealer.
My favorites base blender is nothing more than the binder they put in base. The white milky stuff. Works awesome ! I use it anytime on tricky colors like Metallics & that sort.
Brian, great content as usual. Your explanation was super clear. And the noise canceling was nice although I don't mind the swishing of the gun. Thanks!
I have a question i have been redoing my 1964 impala ive striped the old paint off down to bare metal ,then sprayed ppg2050 high build epoxy primer over bare metal ,then body work where necessary , sanded to 150 then anouther 3 coats of 2050. I am then going to block sand from 150,to120to220to 400 ,my question is should i seal now or can i just spray paint ,im looking at a metallic. Burgendy ,also what can i spray before the base to give the Burgendy matellac a pop ,thanks for the help ,your viedos are always helpfull
I’ve had issues before where aerosol primer or base coat has been used 😵💫. This then leads to a crazed edge that you will always be chasing. Hence the need for sealer in this scenario. Exactly why I try not to touch metallics. 🫢 Admittedly I still use 2k , generally stick to solid colours and don’t use base coat and lacquer just a gloss top coat . For better or for worse I still prefer to give a car a good coat of primer, flat off and then a first coat of colour, that way it’s so much easier to see any imperfections especially when filler has been used as it has a tendency to shrink or wear away quicker than steel , leaving a low spot. it also reduces the chance of missing awkward spots. After the paint has cured, flat off and give it a final colour coat . Sometimes I don’t even use primer at all if no steel is exposed . Admittedly I only generally paint my own stuff and race cars still manage a good finish so luckily have the option of yeah that’s ok . Painting is an art and a very skilled underrated profession .
Hey! I’m new to channel but am actually really enjoying and learning but this video showed you contradicting a previous video? I am pointing out because I actually found advice in other video rock solid. The advice was to ensure you spray sides of a car in sections but to never stop over a handle to prevent drips. Yet, it appears you stop over handles? I know you’re the pro but us amateurs actually are watching and learning. Just a FYI but your work rocks and I have so many questions that you’ll surely hear from me again.
So here is my project. MIL 2004 Toyota with failed clear coat on top and trunk. Planning to take down to base metal then primer/sealer. However, majority of primers are gray, and color is dark red metallic. Will use of gray primer require more basecoat paint? Can you get red primer with sealer? No scratches, body work or Bondo. Not seeking perfection but do want it to be in good shape for next 3+ years
When I spray multiple parts with sealer or primer in the booth, by the time I get to the last couple parts they will have overspray dust on them. Should I tack rag it before spraying the primer or not worry about it?
I have a question for you Brian. I hear you say all the time about using extra slow or slow reducer. I live in PA and sometimes it gets pretty cold here. My garage is not heated with the exception of a space heater and then a few propane heaters. But even with that the metal on the car itself never really gets real warm. What reducer would you recommend? Followup ?: Why not use the clear base at the edges of your base color coat? I believe ive seen you do that in previous videos in order to create a wet bed so the flakes have a more even spread. Why not on this one? One more question: My local paint supplier has the same products and to an extent i think theyre great. But on a few occasions ive had to touch up an area for one reason or another and the paint completely lifted after the second paint job. I was told its because the first job wasnt fully cured and the solvents gassing caused the lift. Have you ever had this happen? Is it the reducer in the paint? Is the something in the clear? To be honest im about to switch to ppg cause i never had that issue before. Love your videos by the way.
I sprayed sealer and had to stop now the sealer is cured 1week later can i base over cured sealer?black sealer black base.maybe lightly scuff sealer 1st?
Hi Brian. Great explanation. Silver can be a tough one. The job came out sweet. Looked to be smokin hot in the booth. Time for a beverage. Enjoy your weekend with your beautiful family.
seemed like you put the clear base over the fresh sealer without waiting for the sealer to flash off. Sometimes I get bleedthrough of the sealer solvents into the topcoat if dont give sealer enough time to flash. Maybe it dont matter with clear base? Love this channel!
you have to put it on ASAP otherwise it won’t do the job. We’re dealing with extreme heat and Florida so the edges dry extremely quick. Remember you can always lightly sand after it it Dries.
Got a weird question maybe. I've been seeing a lot of YT shorts of spray guns with the built in (sun?) lights. What do you think of them? Would you use one or do you consider them a gimmick? It seems like you'd get better use of one of those sun lights afterwards. You don't really have enough time to examine an area while spraying. It just seems like unnecessary heft to the spray gun while spraying.
Today, I used tintable bulldog adhesion promoter as a sealer this way. It worked pretty well. Is there any reason why that might not be a great idea? I know its not really meant for that
great video, without noise canceling was good, with noise canceling was not bad but I think you don't need to talk as loud with the noise canceling on. You do a good job with audio either way. it is nice to be able to hear the spray gun in the background, help to hear how you are pulling the trigger.
Well Brian, I blew it on the hood for my digeline. I have wet sanded it down but still looks blotchy. I was thinking of hitting it hard with 600 ordering a quart of duplicolor taffeta white premixed and grabbing a spray gun from harmor freight and spraying it at home. Ideas?
Can you seal the car and leave it a few days to cure or do you have paint same day? If you can leave it a few days to cure should you sand before base?
Brian, you are an amazing teacher. I would like to ask, can you apply the same methods of waterborne to solvent or is there a big difference in application and or technique?
Hello Brian can you tell me if the ws400 you use for clear is a 1.2 or 1.3? I am trying to decide on which tip size to buy my gun with. I use a stajet 4000 with a 1.2 and like it much better than the 1.3 however if the 400 atomizes so much better should i just stick to the more common 1.3 tip? thanks in advance!!
Noooo!!!! The blender is not the same as a clearcoat. These are two different things. You can use clear instead of a blender when mixing candy concentrate. You cannot use clear the same way he used the blender in this video.
Refurbishing alloy aluminum wheels. I'm using epoxy primer then primer sealer. Sprayed too far away, and epoxy primer has a rough texture, so gray 3m scotchpad then even coat of sealer. Painting wheels gloss black with VHT wheel paint. Can I use 2k clear, or should I use VHT Wheel clear gloss, Brian? Basecoat is Black gloss VHT wheel paint. Thanks
Is there any kind of reducer that can be added to lacquer too slow it's drying process down every time I spray lacquer it dry so fast. By the time I start the hood and get to the other side the first sides already almost dry
Just use extra slow reducer and follow up with orientation coat has shown in the video if it is hot in the Booth and as for spraying the whole car or large areas you can use or apply the leap frog method meaning paint a panel or door in the driver side and then to the other side of the passenger area until you finish everything
Good job, but you should show how to clean with wax and grease remover before touching your guns, and maybe show tacking after you spray your sealer especially for a blend job for the novice painter.
In the end I saw how the front plastic bumper is not matching the hood color. Wouldn't be better idea to blend the color somehow on the front bumper also? As much as you guys try to match the paint, it seems it's also not always perfect for you as well. Matching a paint is a hardest level of difficulty i assume. Otherwise it looks like a quality job :)
Hey Brian, love the channel and the informative content you give us. Question: I'm doing a full bare metal resto, can I apply etch primer then body filler and finish with epoxy primer?? What should be the best sequence? Thanks, Daryl
with the weather getting warmer and alot of us painting in garages, would love to see more at home videos!
Watching these cars come back to life after you paint them is awesome. They always look awesome.
Brian, you are an amazing teacher. I have been watching your videos for a while and I have learned so much. I was able to paint my wife's silver rav4. You rock man.
I think he IS a teacher for a profession!
I thought you are saying "I was able to paint my wife" 😂
Wow, I wish I knew this before I attempted to fix the roof of my Bimmer (Titanium Silver), yes the metallic particles highlight everything, including sanding scratches and the finest imperfections where the primer meets the paint!!!
Don’t you just love e36/46’s 😉😃
Don't look any where else
He's the greatest instructor! 😉
Morning been spraying cars .mostly classics for 30yrs and still learning
That is awesome!
Thank you so much for your videos, I have learnt so much from them. I have been a panel beater for 30 years and now thanks to you guys I can say i’m a very capable painter too!
Thank you
I have learned so much from you Brian, the way you explain things is absolutely priceless. Just want to say thanks man. 👍
Thank you for that😀😀😀
Another very good reason to use sealer is it helps lock down any previous bodywork. Especially important on used panels.
Love the noise canceling version....As always great tips and content Brian...
Don't overthink it's just Paint
Glad you like. It sounds a bit weird to me but if you like it I will do it more !
The noise canceling sounds great
Took long enough right.
The primer sealer and color blender combo is next level man . I don't see alot of pros doing this
AMAZING !!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Yes I am going to be listing the speedokote color blender on amazon as its the only one available online

I like the noise cancelling. 👍🏻
You're A great instructor, Brian. Great blend as always. Looks great!

Great video.Am learning every day. This is how I want my job to look like.Neat and professional.Thank you Brian
Sealer is your friend,i have used the same brand as you are since 1993!!! Great Products!!!
Brian I used Eastwood Epoxy prime as a sealer is it normal for it to be soft. I can topcoat it when soft.
My favorites base blender is nothing more than the binder they put in base. The white milky stuff. Works awesome ! I use it anytime on tricky colors like Metallics & that sort.
Absolutely great way to learn. You are top man!!! Explanation perfect. I wish you had more videos on hvlp machines and guns you use. And how to use.
First real comment. Thanks for the info, Brian. Noise canceling audio sounded great.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Its looking really good Brian!
Perfection is the name of the game with you Brian. This car just looks incredible. From Australia 🇦🇺 🦘

Great nstructions on primer vs sealer. I have been interested in this and it is very clear the difference 👍

Great tip on applying the clear base directly after the sealer. definitely going to give this a go on tomorrow's job.
Good luck!
Another great video Brian. Had I had an instructor like you I would have probably had a different career. Great instructor!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks Brian.From South Africa.

¡GREAT MASTER AND GREAT WOR ! THANK YOU TEACHER FOR THIS VIDEO. GREETINGS FROM LIMA PERU.
The noise cancelling is good... the paint job even better! :)
Glad you think so!
If I have a solid color with a spot primed area can I just hit the primed area with clear base as opposed to using sealer, then base then clear?

Is clear base just regular clear coat you intend to spray over or is clear base some different product to buy ??? And noise cancelling is good.

They work great. Also if you have limited lightning. They help. No gimmick
I have a few questions but it’s about clear coat.

Brian, great results.
Glad you think so!
Can you show how to paint a Matt color like gray, or black ? Thank you for teaching I love these videos and I’m learning again thanks
Is clear base just clear coat being used as a base coat?
That came out perfect 🍻🍻
Hey Brian can I use sealant over large areas of body filler?
hey brian, will silver metallic show 1000 grit scratches?
and what happens if you use sealer without clear base? what happens at those sealer edges?
I too use Akzonobile brand material now days. Sikkens, wanda, an̈d U-Tech 4.0 clear for budget clear and Sikkens high solids for expesive stuff
Brian, you are an amazing teacher. I would like to ask, can you apply the same methods of waterborne to solvent or is there a big difference in application and or technique?
Do you recommend sealer on a car with polyester primer?
did u let the sealer dry before laying the base clear?
20 min
This dude is dialed the phuck in! 💪🏽

Im using the UPOL high build primer/sealer with 4-1-2.5 mixing ratio....how long should i wait before applying base coat over it? Thanks
so clear base meaning is clear coat as a 1 coat like 1st base right?? is this what u mean???
