If you want to get better at color grading you have to be color correcting. Remember to always color correct first in Premiere or Final Cut using whatever tools that work for your workflow and then color grade after.

This video just goes so deep down in details! I have seen lots of color grading by Daniel and Peter, and they do cover every step we need to do regarding color correction and color grading but somehow I just don't understand why they did that. Thank you so much Matti for breaking everything down and layed them out in order, the puzzle in my head has finally been solved. I really appreciate the effort you put in for those content!
Finally someone who properly explains the color grading. I thought people just color correct "as they please" and "eye ball" it, but your explanation of bumping the blacks, highlights and shadows makes sense to me. Thank you very much.

That line running between R and Y on your vector scope is the flesh/skin tone indicator. No matter how dark or light a persons skin is, it should always fall on that line (or ~ 1 to 2 degrees to the left or right).
Nate Follmer I used to run an old school rank cintel with da Vinci desk. First thing I learnt, where to place skin tones on the vector scope.

Color grading takes time and I'm still learning how to be consistent. No matter what you still need to keep making videos and at the same time keep learning how to get better at the technical aspects such as color grading. I've learned alot from Matti and like he said it takes time to get really good at color grading and etc. Thanks for the valuable tips Matti👍🏻

Hey Matti, here are some tips that can add to what you recommended. Hope they help. Tell me what you think:
- Use Adjustment layers so that you can visually see in your timeline what you have done. Also by using one big adjustment layer and cutting it in-between clips AFTER you corrected 1 hero shot, means that your sliders/values will already be adjusted and if you need to make 1 minor correction, you don't have to move 10 values or copy paste the effect every time and change it.
- (For Grading especially) Set these Adjustment layers to 50% opacity. This has 2 benefits:
1. If you're in a hurry and you don't want to tweak each individual slider to bump your grade effect, you can always turn up that opacity from 50 to 60. Before you could always go lower, but not higher than 100. (obviously this is for your own grade with multiple effects, since the Luts already have this kind of slider)
2. If you are a perfectionist and want to tweak values (like curves) juuuuust by 2 pixels lower or higher, having the opacity at 50 means that those 2 pixels become 4, so it's less finicky when you do this with a mouse.
- If you want to mess with colors for a grade, be sure to grab a JPG of a "color card" (google it), or better yet, shoot one on your location and add it under your grade. You can visually see what it's doing to the colors and it's a nice reference to keep until you make your final export (at that point you remove it, obviously)
- Don't underestimate the Original Three-Way Color Corrector Effect from Premiere. It is not obsolete, as they call it. It's pretty much the ONLY effect that has color wheels that let you determine WHAT IS a shadow and WHAT IS a highlight through sliders. Furthermore, it has actual numerical values that you can even keyframe: When I'm going for a look I always bump my color to the max, so that I can see if i'm nailing it in the vectorscope, and then take the value from 100 to like 20, while the Hue remains the same. And before Premiere 2019 it was also the only tool that let you De/Saturate Highlights, Mids, Shadows separately (again those Highs and Shadows being determined by you as you liked). And for people that don't have Colorista, I think this can help them more than the default Lumetri wheels.

That's exactly what I was thinking. It should work just fine to add Lumetri a few times and have the first (and last) instances take the place of Colorista for color correction.

color correcting is something I started working on. I love high contrast with quite a bit of saturation. I love to have those colors pop! but skin tones I struggle with. I don't want to be orange or washed out in my videos. Thanks for the color correcting tips Matti!

I love doing that too but this past year I have been really digging going more warm on everything. There are so many great color options and it all has the potential to be cool. Color grading is one of my favorite parts of the editing process.
If you don't have Colorista, you can still manage your color wheels before your LUT if you have two Lumetri Color effects placed on your footage! :)

I've never added Lumitri as an effect. I just go to the color tab. Is the reason to do that because of what you said? So you can add a Lumitri effect, work with the color wheels so they show up first, then add another Lumitri effect for further edits?
@@suprap7 I usually use several instances of Lumetri as separate effects. It is definitely worth exploring using it as an effect multiple times on your grade. ESPECIALLY if you are into making masks. You can dedicate a whole instance of Lumetri to work in or outside of a mask you draw with desired exposure and color adjustments and then use a SEPARATE ADDITIONAL instance of Lumetri where it has no mask and affects the entire image.

This is interesting, as I remember watching an older colour grading tutorial of yours in which you actually said you prefer applying a grade first (probably on an adjustment layer) and then going back to individually correct each clip so they match.
I'm just wondering, do the new Hue options in Premiere Pro CC 2019 provide any more versatility compared to just basic Lumetri, i.e. anything as close to Colourista?

Can you do a tutorial on how to do this in Davinci Resolve please? Your video is extremely helpful but I am having trouble applying these techniques to Davinci Resolve, my image just keeps ending up hazy and their waveform goes from 0 - 1000+.

Quick note: Using Lumetri alone does not prevent you from having your color wheels activate first before any other corrections. Simply put in a lumetri filter and adjust color wheels to taste, then create another lumetri filter and place it under the first one and continue working from there. You dont need colorista to work in that order.
Ah, I just started to type that but then read this - I'm sure the wheels in Lumetri are not too dissimilar to Colorista. I can't remember what year Lumetri shipped with Premiere but I remember it transforming every thing I did!

Do you really color grade your shots one by one? :O I think I one saw a tutorial of yours in which you suggest using Adjustment Layer on top of all the clips in order to apply your LUTs.
What if I color correct the clip itself and put an adjustment layer on top of all of them in order to apply aLUT? How can I then add the third step?
Same thing that I said in one of my videos! You cant just use a LUT on your footage and hope it looks awesome. You need to edit your footage every single time. Great video Matti! :-)

Colorista is available on MacOs for both Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X.

Matti, would you convert SLog footage to Rec 709 before you start color correction?
No. SLog is meant for color correction. Rec 709 is meant for delivering, aka color correcting slog footage TO rec 709 standards. Slog has a wider dynamic range allowing a colorist a bigger playground to color with. Rec 709 does not and is the standard color space for broadcast, thus coloring slog video to rec 709 specifically if it's meant for movie/television.

@@klarkolofsson , I do not understand almost nothing about the subject(color grade), so I made the comment. Maybe for the middle/higher experienced is an elementary thing.
Awesome content, great advice. The luma tip is extremely helpful. I normally push highlights to 100 and blacks to 0. I also normally use the colour wheel instead of the tint and temperature to colour shift. These tips are time savers.
