    RAW Burst mode was one of the things that convinced me to add an R7 to my set up. I'm still using a DSLR main body - so this is like witchcraft to me! It's a very handy feature - and I photograph songbirds a lot so I'll certainly find it very useful for action. Other systems (Olympus for example) have had this feature for a long time - and I never understood why other manufacturers didn't offer it. Seems like Canon, at least, is doing just that.

    My R7 arrives on Tuesday. The M6MKII has a similar feature but I rarely used it on that camera because it reduced the image size a lot. From what you showed, I will be using it on this new camera.

I'm very excited to get out and take some pictures and your videos definitely help with the settings and I thank you for that. I recently spent several hours trying to get a woodpecker flying away from a tree with myR6 & RF 100-500 lens , by taking continuous burst of photos, it was often a minute or more before the woodpecker flew off and usually when the buffer was full 3000 shots later only had three good images of the woodpecker in flight! Just rewatched this episode now I have had the chance to play with my R7 and learn to set up my workflow a bit better. Yes it is a cool feature albeit a bit fiddlier to extract. Having watched again it feels less daunting Scott and something I would use with fast moving subjects like say swallows, terns etc. My holy grail shot would be to capture a Fairy or Little Tern diving and coming back out with fish. I love watching terns so much and was absolutely stoked when I caught my first Crested Tern BIF shot

    I like it! It’s not for everything but when you want to catch that perfect moment I think it could be great. It would be nice if you could set a button to turn it on and off but I suppose you could put into a custom setting, like C1, and then just flip that over when your pensively waiting for something about to happen. Thanks again for another excellent review.

    Nice video. You are real. I shoot a lot of soccer. The preburst is the single feature I am excited the most. However, it is bit disappointing with the rolling shutter. On another channel review, the distortion is really bad with a slow whiffle ball action. I would imagine soccer will be a lot worse. Kind of crazy, but a times, I think I can see rolling shutter on the feet kicking with mechanical shutter (7D2).

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  2 роки тому

      Yah, don't go by those videos. A lot of them do the exact thing that will cause the exaggeration just for the click. It's not real world. Especially if its the video I'm thinking of. And when they went to wildlife they did a whip pan on the bird and shooting its butt. We NEVER shoot a bird flying away ( so not much of wildlife photography example)
      The soccer all ones and bats always get me. The ball compresses when kicked so its supposed to compress. The bats are due to camera is moving one way and bat is moving the other and you shutter speed along with that straight line object will bow with stacked or not it just exaggerated more on the non stacked .Along with speed and timing of the swing. If they showed you the full series of shots you will see at the END of the swing you get the rolling shutter effect. SO you can adjust that shutter and how you take the shot.
      My main takeaway is learn what methods help or hinder any factor of your shot.
      I'm working on a rolling shutter video now for Wildlife Photography. It doesn't affect wildlife as much and there are things you can do do reduce that effect.
      Rolling shutter does exist on this and all non stacked cameras, but its avoidable with proper technique I'm my opinion. But well see after my testing with R3, R5, and R7.

    I really appreciate the level of detail you go into, to create your video clips. You asked what would benefit us as viewers and for me personally I am having difficulty deciding whether to sacrifice quality by buying an RF 100-400mm lens , or to pay the extra (and have back problems) carrying the RF 100-500 lens which is twice the weight. I have the RP since about a year, i really enjoy the camera but i probably made a bad decision: I got a fair priced 2nd hand R6 (thinking it has also the pre burst mode and that im fine with 20MP full frame)
    Its a MONSTER....just handles ISO 12800 with superior image quality, even 25600+ looks somehow usable and great. But then there comes the issue: 20MP, without crop sensor i need to crop manually which shows up pixels MUCH TOO EASY, less noisy/grainy and more color detail, but at best as good as the RP when cropping in sharpness/fine detail which was on the RP already an issue for wildlife. Often i just used the heavy 1,8x crop of the 4k video to extract jpegs, thats NOT ENJOYABLE when you want to take pictures.
    With more reach from lenses (or 2x TC) i would probably keep the R6 with happiness, but i struggle a lot with the 20MP FF (which is in my opinion not ok for such a high price).
    Its a great allrounder for anything, but missing pre burst is also a huge thing, beside the fact that i can forget about a lot cropping with the R7 since my 400mm gets 640 and the RF 800 F11 gets extreme 1280mm for "uncropped" photo usage at damn 32MP!
    As much i love how awesome the R6 performs and i would love to keep it... for landscape, travel etc the R6 is too low MP and too heavy (and too good in other aspects), for wildlife the R6 isnt fitting my needs as i expected as well.
    Also, i really want to keep the EOS RP (it fits my needs nearly 100%, just 120fps video and animal detect is missing!) and the RP + R7 seems like an awesome and universal usable combo (RP with any regular/small lens for macro whatever, just a basic camera for "anything" and the R7 for my dedicated wildlife needs with the RF 800 F11 and 100-400 or just mix in between whatever fits better. This setup i could use until both cameras die and the lenses and system is heavily outdated i guess?
    Longer ago i had also 2 bodies... but the 2nd body was always a lot older and much less usable so i never/barely used it, this combo could work a lot better since both systems, the RP and R7 have its own unique selling points/strenghts, combine them and you have a super image quality and overall package ("super" small & light) with the RP, and a fast, nearly to the R3 comparable wildlife/sports camera with the R7. Price/performance i think i get a lot more with RP+R7 than with the R6 i guess?

If i find myself also comfortable to be happy with APC-S of the R7 for anything else too, i probably sell the RP. @petervanvleet8215 Рік тому

    I've been using burst mode a lot w/the R6MII, but there are 2 things I find frustrating. If editing the roll file on the camera, there isn't anyway to export a series of frames in 1 step so you can get that many JPEG or HEIF files at once. And in DPP, you showed the 2nd button for exporting more than 1 image out of the roll file, but it doesn't create separate image files of them, it just creates yet another roll file. So in DPP there also isn't a way to export a series of images out as JPEG (and no option for HEIF since DPP doesn't support that format for exporting). When doing bird launches, it's almost never a single image and why they don't have an option to export multiples in 1 step I don't understand. And in DPP if you want to edit the roll images, you can't do them directly in the roll file, you have to export each image and then can edit the image back in the main DPP window. I think they need to add even more/better support for their roll files both on the camera and in DPP.

    Yeah man, that's again a very interesting investigation you made here!! Partly thanks to Alaska being so close to Japan, you were among the first to decently test the R7, and you stay several steps ahead of the pack. In your previous YT, you referred briefly to my mate Duade. Some days later he posted his first impressions and was fighting a bit with his AF settings. So in my comment I pointed him to your video, and he replied me he found some great tips from you ;-)
    Also instead of the hype around AI, you showed some neat HI (aka Human intelligence) .. after the pre-shoot winning the first 4 bursts, your brain was trained by the R7 and the next 2 you nailed all by yourself 😛
    Do you have the impression this burst mode provides more images from the rather limited buffer size compared to regular shooting ?
    And did you do anything special to avoid rolling shutter ? I've seen examples where the R7 had much worse rolling shutter, and when I then learned the raw burst was stuck to electronic shutter, I feared the rolling shutter would destroy this feature. But most of your images rather prove the opposite !
    I'm again starting to pray the raw burst comes a firmware update to the R6/5/3 as well ..

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  2 роки тому +1

      Ya I saw Duade's video. And im not sure what Sd card he and Jan are using. but the v90 card he's the buffer immensely and is he shooting craw or raw. Wasn't enough info to understand why on the burst of 1 second. Even the R3 with a Type B hits buffer at 30fps. Of course longer than the R7 ;)
      The AF has been great for me. Watch todays video coming out this evening AK time. And you will see me shooting a PIKAS in almost same conditions Duade had issue with. No issue for me more than the R5 would do. So not sure what some others are experiencing. As he's a great photog.
      With the RAW Burst how I use it is to hit a moment in time that's hard to catch. SO a 3 second burst should be more than enough.
      Im working a video up on rolling shutter now. Jan Wenger has one on the R5 which is exactly the same as the R7. IN todays video I highlight some shots that have rolling shutter during the in depth of the 600mm F11 shots. Spoiler its not an issue for wildlife. there will always be an extreme case though. Also you can do things to avoid rolling shutter same as you can avoid motion blur, blown highlights, etc. A bit of the Human AI vs Artificial. Same as in Auto ISO it never has it "right" for my taste.
      Thanks for the comments and info.

      I have a 500MM f4.0 MK II lens. I had the RF 100-500 at release but didn't use it much because of the 500 F4 lens. Sold it during the pandemic and lens shortage and put it into other lens purchases. The 70-200 EF takes extenders very very well. So I have (with the R5 )with 2 lenses 70 to 1000 MM without going into crop. I wouldn't mind having the 100-500 again, but the f-stop of 7.1 at 500 kills me in AK and you have to work harder vs f4 on your backgrounds. and that 500 f4 is just dreamy with its IQ. It took a long time to save up for the 500 f4 also.

    Great demo of the raw burst/pre-shoot feature! Thanks for doing this video.
    It looks like a useful feature for certain situations, as you demonstrated... Very fast action that's difficult for the photographer to time perfectly. The fox hunting in the snow is a perfect example... A shot you know is possible, but have been unable to get because it happens so unexpectedly and fast.
    I have three or four concerns about using this feature on the R7. You touched on one of them... The possibility of rolling shutter issues, since it's only possible to use the pre-shoot with the electronic shutter. Another possible issue you mentioned, it sounds as if exposure modes and white balance are essentially locked as soon as the raw burst/pre-shoot mode are enabled... Does that mean going into the menu to disable the mode in order to make any necessary exposure and WB adjustments? Finally, maintaining the half press of the shutter release is going to more rapidly drain batteries, I'm sure. Not to mention cramped fingers if doing it for long periods of time. How about Back Button Focusing? Can that be used instead?
    Thanks again for the informative video!

      -Rolling shutter as your in electronic. Im testing this weekend to see how extreme it is for us wildlife guys ( not noticing any really off so far - its there but not as noticeable to me now)
      - It just takes what you have for settings prior to enabling the mode. Just shoot manual and you can control your exposure and I leave white balance to auto and I think that's what the mode uses.
      - And yes the half press on a animal that you have to wait a long time on is painful. ut at least its an option
      - I don't think so but I haven't tested.seeing as its a half press that the shutter button has an nothing else does half press.Maybe if they allowed a prebuffer button. but alas no such option. more testing needed

      @@WILDALASKA Thanks for the quick followup. Very helpful.
      With regard to the last item... I know on all other Canon the Back Button Focusing not only starts AF, it alao starts metering and IS. In other words, it does everything a half press on the shutter button does. The only real difference with BBF is that the half press no longer starts AF. It continues to start metering and IS. In other words, when BBF is set up both shutter butron half press and pressing the AF On button start IS and metering, while only pressing the AF On button starts AF (It is also possible to use the * button for BBF... either swapping function with AF On or setting up two different BBF modes, such as one with eye detect and the other without)
      I would bet that with BBF enabled the AF On button will also activate the raw burst/pre-shoot function.

Up to now all have been using it on one or another of the full frame models... Mostly R5 or R6. So few people have the R7 in hand, so far... But I see no reason the EF 100-400mm II shouldn't work just as well on the R7, too. From what I've seen, aside ffrom the extra 100mm (and half lb. less weight) there is almost no difference with the RF 100-500mm. Here in the US, if I recall correctly the RF 100-500mm is selling for $2900. The basic EF to RF adapter sells for $100. Or for $200 there's the adapter with a control ring.

      @WILDALASKA  2 роки тому

      I'm not really. I'm just culling the images and storing for now. My keepers that is. The thumbnails for UA-cam and anything I share has just been the pure RAW image which speaks to the quality of the camera and its IQ.
      I'm waiting to do proper edits once DXO gets the camera model added. So they need to HURRY.

      Yes, and I'm reserving my definitive review of the camera until I can get camera profiles for all of my workflow tools, For now using the CR3 files without the tools feels like the other camera profiles (R5 and R3) So I'm hoping once they all get up to speed it will be close in image quality

    In my camera, the burst function is Gray. Meaning that does not let me to switch it or select it, but is there is there a reason or a way that I can enable the burst mode?

      Has to be in RAW format. other than that im not sure what could be causing the grey menu item.

    • @WILDALASKA
      @WILDALASKA  2 роки тому

      I don't think so. The shutter button has 2 modes half and full press. I think that's why they only allow it there. Half for buffer and then full to store it and on. release of half discharge it. Ill need to dig deeper to know for sure.

      Working up a video to show just that. Using the R3 as comparison as it has a stacked sensor to show offset of the non stacked r7 and r5. From a wildlife perspective
