Awesome review video! I really like how you show, and explain, the misses as well as the hits. And you’re showing unedited RAW photos. A lot of other reviewers aren’t doing that. I’ve been really considering this combo for my move from DSLR to mirrorless, and you’ve really made up my mind for me. I’m really amazed, even watching this over UA-cam on an iPad, at the image quality of both the lens and the camera for the price point. Just being able to shoot in that light, and at relatively high ISO (compared to what I could do cleanly with my 7D) amazes me. I’m really looking forward to picking these up. Thank you!

I love your very practical commentary and open sharing of your experiences of success and failures regarding focusing issues. Especially as it pertains to user practices vs. equipment limitations; perfect example being holding on to the back button autofocus engaging eye-tracking too long. I am fortunate enough to own an R5 and R7, with the Canon 100 -500L as my long lens, and I also just bought the Canon RF 100-400 on sale from a local camera shop for a steal of only $500 (vs. normal retail $649 price). My motivation for also buying the 100 - 400 is for a very light and compact travel gear setup of the R7, with the 10-18 & 18-150 RF-S kit lenses & RF 100-400. Nice 3-lens combo to get me an effective for range of 16mm to 640mm with the crop sensor R7. Keep up the good work on producing these videos.

Superb video and agree totally about the performance of the lens. It is tack sharp and combined with the R7 can produce some superb photos and a very high keeper rate. To me as a guy who can no longer carry large lenses and heavy cameras around through health issues it has brought some of the real joy back to wildlife photography and birding and can now enjoy it again. With the R7 imho it is one of the best set ups on the market for beginners, old hands and all those that wish to travel light.

Bought this lens to with my R10, first outing with no settings on camera quite pleased with bird shots on beach. Now adapted your way of setting up camera and photo in pigeons in garden really pleased with results. Now need to sort out BIF. Thanks for the advice.

Maybe, we all shoot different and see different things out of our equipment (not jan, duade, and I - everyone). I think that's why I'm trying to show the RAW files and talk through the shots and experience. But I haven't strayed to much in experience on the cameras and lenses they have reviewed and I have used so far ;)

Wonderful video, start to finish. Hoping to pick up this lens and camera combination to retire my 60D + 55-250 IS STM rig. Only a casual/backyard wildlife photographer but I can't see myself being unhappy with this hardware for many years to come.

Full is great. R6 is ok but the MP for wildlife I feel is too low. SO full frame your going to be in for the R5 so 3800. But the R7 is 1500.
SO depends on your budget and work type. If you wanting to dip toes into mirrorless then id guess R7. but if you IN and budget wasn't issue then R5. Hard to go wrong on either.
You can rent R5 probably but the R7 will be a while for some to eb available for rent.
Great review! I have this camera/lens combination and so far, very impressed with it. I usually shoot manual w/auto ISO. What max ISO would you recommend that I set. I shoot mostly animals and perched birds, sometimes in low light.

You have the most realistic reviews I have ever seen. For the money this lens is pretty amazing. At this point I don’t need the this lens, I have lens that cover that range already but they are heavier and less fun to carry.
Even though you were just shooting to get samples for the review you got some great shots. I also like that you changed your position to show that you can get a nice foreground and background simply by moving a little sometimes.

I would suggest trying to rent locally or online service the rf 100-400 and the rf 100-500 and compare the 3 lenses for yourself. Each will have something you like and don't like and find what suits how you shoot and what you wallet will tolerate :).
I haven't used the Sigma lens so its very hard for me to say which lens I would prefer. But I do stay with Canon lenses with the R5/6/7 cameras.

Just a question : out of the 4 lenses you tested, what would you recommand to a beginner in wildlife? 150-600 regardless of the hitrate? 100 400 regardless of the f/8 and reach? Or 600-800mm regardless of f/11 and very significant minimum distance?
I will probably test them all, but I am really wondering your point of view. F/6.3 and zoom seems attractive to me for light, flexibility and bokeh...

RF 100-400 for sure. fast AF, great IQ, so LIGHT. I will end up picking this thing up. It may be a video lens more and a hiking lens for times where I want a smaller aperture. Like moose, Dahl Sheep, bears, etc.

Great video as always Scott. I'm going to trade in my 77d for the R7 soon. Would love the RF100-500mm lens but at this point in time won't be able to afford both the R7 plus the 100-500mm lens though. I'm based in South Africa so I shoot a lot of wildlife like lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, as well as birds. And I occasionally shoot aviation as well. I do own the Tamron 150-600mm G2, which I used a lot on my 77d. So I have 3 options it seems...
Keep the Tamron 150-600mm and pair it with the R7
Sell the Tamron 150-600 G2 and try and get a second hand EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM in good nick

Sell tampon and buy the EF 100-400 II if those were ny 3 choices, L glass is always best.
i love my ifootage mono and tripod. I'll have to get an attachment like you have between camera and tripod. i like the fluid head but its heavy and not super needed most of time
For average rigs the ball heads are ok. I need to pick up a sidekick or something similar for the heavy rigs myself. Love it.

I totaly agree on your opion about comparing apples and peers. Like comparing this lens with the 100-500 for example. I like this lens a lot on my R6 and it fits my budget much better. The only thing is that I often would like more reach. I tried the 1.4x but maybe I'll opt for the R7 and trade in my R6

*This camera/lens is my most likely upgrade to my T7 setup..perhaps lens first, then base for 2 camera carry..I'd love a step up to more light capture, but that's where the $$$$ isn't there for me, but I know what a difference it makes..you can definitely feel where you need upgrade in the field, handling & lens f-capacity for lighting.
There are some beautiful lenses available that allow "reaching" work in the low light.. in the sense you do get what you pay for in the high end lenses...but knowing how to exploit what you have to the fullest is success multiplier, & improves your experience with upgrades
Yes, one needs to learn 'how' to get god images otherwise no expense of gear will help the image get better.

I’ve been hoping for someone to do a comparison of those two lenses specifically on the R7. Even just seeing a good review of either or both separately would be great. Thanks for all you do here!
Edit to add:
One of the things I was thinking about regarding the RF 100-500mm lens, is that someone with an R3/R5/R6 camera shooting with that lens at 500mm has a maximum aperture of f/7.1, which is obviously the same with the R7. However, with the R7, I can shoot at 312.5mm and have a full frame equivalent of 500mm. And at 312.5mm, the RF 100-500mm lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6, which is 2/3 of a stop wider.
I know the R7 gets some heat from the community for low light performance and needing to use higher ISO. But I feel like the 1.6x crop factor is being largely dismissed in this regard. Given the same conditions and the same shutter speed, at 500mm (R5) and 312.5mm (R7), the R7 should get the same shot as the R5, with a 2/3 wider aperture and thus, a lower ISO, correct? (Or does the R5 have a lower ISO to begin with because of the full frame sensor’s better light gathering ability?) With regard only to maximum apertures, with a prime lens, or a zoom lens with a constant maximum aperture throughout the zoom range, this wouldn’t be the case. But with a zoom lens with a variable maximum aperture, I would think the R7 might have an advantage with exposure value compared to an R5 for a shot where the subject fills the frame equally. As touched on above, notwithstanding pixel density, a full frame sensor will usually have larger pixels and better light gathering ability. So I guess I’m wondering if the R7 can equal the image of an R5 for image quality, noise, etc., when shooting at 312.5mm to match the R5 shooting at 500mm.

On my R5, the 100-400L2 worked ok, but... the eye tracking af is terrible with the ef 1.4x on. I missed yellowtailed black cockatoos flying 15m above me - that combo would not focus at all. Next week I bought the RF100-500 and havent used the 100-400L2 since
@@nordic5490 Nice! I’m really leaning toward getting the RF 100-500 but I’m still doing research and trying to find out more about its performance with the R7. As an owner, you know how expensive it is. I suppose I could rent one and try it out for a few days first. If I owned the R5, I think I would have pulled the trigger already.
Used to own both lenses. But ill review both with the R7 soon.
That math isn't working though. you have to think of DOF. crop and full 500mm is 500mm dof. So the crop has no effect other than putting more MP on the subject.
The reason for more noise is more MP within the cop as the r7 is really 83 or so MP. Was same with the 7d and its mp inside the crop (kind of a density). More MP more noise.
R7 is good in low light almost to r5 level. remember r6 is a lot lower level MP. 83 MP vs 20MP - so for that the R7 handles low light good for the MP count. And all the AI tools now get rid of the noise. Now color fringe in complete dark is always an issue regardless.
R5 and R7 raw noise is very close. So if you can work with the r5 noise I think you will be happy with the R7. Especially for the price. To me its a great second camera to compliment the r5 in my workflow.

The R5 update on AF a bit back really sped up AF on the EF lenses. they were already god but that patch made them better. SO I think the EF 100-400 may be better for you. I known when I used it when I first got the r5, the 100-500 Rf would hit like the fox eye at a better hit rate ( instead of the ears etc).
Also if you can't get focus increase the light (iso usually) and then dial it back to where you want it. Its usually a contrast thing for me on any lens.
Good thing about EF lenses and RF is you can rent them. If no local shop the find one of the ship out rental places and try them out and find what works best for 'YOU'. Reviews and others experience only goes so far.
Nice video! Going for the same combo and thanks to a sale I already have the 100-400. But since the R7 is still not available I can't test the lens myself.

@@WILDALASKA using personal shopper Best Buy he was able to order an R7 Saturday supposed to get it next Saturday. Fingers crossed may be an option for people. No local camera shops in area anymore.
This is exactly the type of shooting I am most interested in. I do shoot ground squirrels and even smaller mammals lot. I am thinking to purchase this lens and use it as a combo with R8. What do you think on such scenario, Scott?

You referenced the 70-200 with a 2x teleconverter a couple of times in your video. I am thinking about going this route with my R6 mk ii. Any thoughts on performance and image quality. Thanks for the video.
The EF 70-200 MKIII to me when a/b testing the RF version was a tad better and the bokeh was more round int he corners vs the RF. ON top of that I can drop extenders on it without image degradation. SO the lens becomes a 98-280 before R7 Crop @ f4.0 and with the 1.6 crop added in it gets to 156- 480 effective focal length. (224-640 @ 5.6 with the 2x)
I just saw more upside with the EF. Now it is a LOT heavier in this configuration.
Thanks for the feedback. I have the ef 700-200 ii which I believe is very similar to the ef 70-200 III. How about the focusing performance? Did either the 1.4x or 2.0x cause a significant AF performance drop for the 70-200?

Picked up my R7 today and have to admit I'm on the fence about my first lens.
I like the look of the RF 100-400 but the lack of weather sealing is a concern, my other option would be the Tamron 100-400 G2 with an adapter, it's weather sealed and ever so slightly faster.
A left field option would be the 400mm 5.6 eg prime with the adapter.... obviously there's zero flexibility with that combo.
So much research to do!
I would take the Rf 100-400 over the Tamron personally. But if I was looking for a lens in that range and price. I would look for a used EF 100-400 MK II. It will be couple more hundred, but a better lens setup and faster @ F5.6
JJC is my first choice for lens hoods.
They are just as good as Canons IMHO.

I have noticed that the R7 AF degrades quite a bit in less than good light. I rented an OM-1 this week and that’s the biggest difference I have noticed between it and the R7. The OM-1 grabs focus on things like birds in flight really fast. The R7 is good as well but lags a little behind the OM-1. I love the idea of the RF 100-400mm as a travel lens for birds.
My 500 f4 and the 70-200 iii lock on to even super small birds fast with the r7. Even the 600 f11 would grab tree swallows fast if I could get them in frame lol.
And in AK our good light is others bad light most days.
Even the 100-400 grabbed the Savanah Sparrows easily and they are SMALL in that horrible light I had.
Now with the r7 PLUS the RF 100-400the holding AF too long on farther subject it would just go OUT of focus. BUT th lens also would jump back to a subject better than others when focus was way at infinity or minimum which shocked me.
Basically with my whites the AF on the r7 is as good or better than my R5.
I can't and won't compare different manufacturers as that is not what I want to do or compare really. All manufacturers are good and have their style of use. :)
Which lens did you have on the OM-1? This confuses me but I am basing everything on internet research so that happens.

I'v got it too, but not having to much experience with it. So seeing your video helps remembering everything again. Till now I also think this is a very good lens, I'll combine it with the R5, perhaps than even better most of the times. Why did you use a R7, you don't have a R5 or want to most tele-reach? Greetings from the Netherlands, Onno Nugteren Photographer too. :-) Ah just now I saw your verdict. So you have a R5 and probably agree with me that the R5 is a better combo? Even with smaller reach? Also because to my opinion the smaller reach is also a quality aspect too! Landscape portraits etc.
This video was about the r7 and rf 100-400 combo and how it performs. the r5 is th cream right now for canon, but the r7 has a better af.

But doesn't the lack of sharpness in the corners limit your composition to center, or near center of the frame? It's as if you can say the center is the sweet spot, but that spot doesn't extend out beyond the limited area this lens provides. Pretty good for that price though. I wish another manufacturer would hop onboard with the RF mount. Maybe a Sigma 100-400 would weigh and cost a bit more, but it would still have more value than Canon's $2800 100-400.
No corners we usually are vignetting or something. we want the focus to ne on the subject. Eye drawn to it etc. and the IQ in corners is still VERY good. Were talking extreme corner not like 1/4 of the frame. its just not as sharp as the rf 100-500. but we shouldn't be comparing 600 to 2800 in price ;)

Sold my R5 to get another R7 + this lens, and some other peripherals. I probably won't use this lens that much, as it will not usually be long enough, but I felt I needed to have it "just in case" I find some closer stuff, or larger stuff. Typically my go to is my RF 800 F11. BTW, I shot about 100K shots with my R5 over the last year. It was a great camera. But when I rented the R7 about 6 weeks ago, my keeper rate went WAY up, and SO much less cropping. I ordered one before I even returned the rental. After a month, I tried to go back to my R5, and it just wasn't fun anymore. Heavy, loud, and the bottom line, less good shots. If the R5 does better than the R7 for the next guy, that's great. But this has just been my personal experience. I should be getting the 100-400 next week.
I think (hopefully) with the r5 firmware coming to add all the r6MkII features to it ( latest rumors mind you) the r5 will get some of the feel we have with the r7.
@@WILDALASKA I think it totally could. Sound for my ES would have been great, but for me, the biggest positive difference with the R7, was the 1.6 crop factor. There are folks who say, in camera cropping is no different than cropping later during your photo processing. However, I believe that shooting with a crop sensor, because it pulls the creature up so much closer, makes it easier for your AF to operate, and that makes it much more accurate. 👍
I like the R7, but I think the R5 in crop mode would win. You don't have to drop the ISO so low, because it handles higher ISO really well. It does have half the resolution in crop mode, but if you're shooting in full frame mode tracking will also be easier. I have an R6 right now, but I'm thinking of upgrading.
Extra note: Because the R5 and R6 are so good in low light, the camera has an easier time grabbing focus and holding it. I only have hunting with the 100-400 when it's extremely dark.
So the R5 ISO handling is just a touch better if any than the r7 only due to the r7 would be 80+ mp at full sensor. In crop though your image is 17mp on the r5 so your loosing resolution big time vs r7.
With DXO and topaz that iso different is tossed out the window also.
R7 AF is faster and stickier currently than the r5, but with incoming firmware for R5 that could change.
Id wait to see what the R5 firmware has in it. You could pick up a used r5 for around 2.5k

Canon L lenses are at least three times heavier. This lens is just what I need to walk around in the nature long enough and take decent shots without carrying heavy equipment which takes away all fun from my hobby.
Yes the RF 100-400 is an amazing hiking and run and gun lens.

Trendy :) Its good gear. And a lot of folks requested the 4 lenses and I get it as I like to see real world reviews of gear from someone I trust (well I hope folks trust what I say0 And I enjoy reviewing and exploring gear I haven't used.
And dont work more field videos incoming. This week I am in Homer and along the Cook Inlet looking for wildlife with family that came up from the Lower 48 and next month I will be out looking for Kodiak bears and animals around the Arctic Circle.
And some interviews with other photographers soon also.

Thoughts on the Tamron 100-400 g2 vs this lens?
Haven't tested that lens, but the 3rd party lenses aren't compatible with the RF mount.

@@Sunsipix hmm, ok. My local camera shop told me that as long as it's for a Canon mount it'll work. They didn't say I needed an adapter as well
@@jackieboshoff2013 Most (if not all) third party lenses like Sigma and Tamron are still using EF mounts (old canon mounts), if you want to use an EF lens on a RF canon body (Like the Canon R7 or R10...) you need an adapter. I use a Canon R10 with a Sigma 100-400 and it works great.
Those unedited images have the L "pop" to them. Crazy.
Ya lens was crazy good for the price. Just have to take more time with your backgrounds
Seems like R7 struggle to stay in focus if the subject is too small in frame. Compared to R3, R5 & R6 , R7 have less af area . R7 has 651 af area while R5 & R6 have 1053 af area.
Not really. The R7 WITH the RF 100-400 had some issues if you stay ON the AF too long continuosly but the whites (L) don't have that issue.
First of all I own an R7 and the RF100-400 as well as the kit lens. and agree they are very good indeed the best Camera and Lens I have ever owned and thankfully light. But Budget Combo, Im sorry this is not Budget, in total with kit lens thats £2,300 and im telling you thats not budget to me, its a very expensive luxury which if I had been sensible i would never have bought and would have stuck with my M-series. Yes its budget if your used to being able to buy L-glass or even a professional who can wright it off against expenses, But to the average man in the street and me as retired THIS IS NOT A BUDGET LENS OR CAMERA.
M50 is not a wildlife camera in my opinion. And yes any camera even a disposable camera in the right hands can get a good shot.
The R7 or R10 paired with the RF 100-400 is THE best budget wildlife combo. Frame rate, autofocus, etc, etc.
The closest combo purchased new to this would cost over $2,000 more and not have close tot he same features.
Mid level set up is with lens and camera $6-7k and pro level $14-20k
Biudget value in any subject is not always in everyone 'budget' comfort. If I stated hey this is the best budget Bass Boat and that would be $15k that doesn't mean its in a Fishermans budget. Same for camera equipment. This stuff is EXPENSIVE. Its not a cheap hobby.
So to sum it up $1600 - 2100 for a complete kit to sheet large animals all the way out to tweeties and get pro results is budget.
Go used with a 7Dmkii and a ef 100-400 and your still at $1500.

Just curious why you are not using the mechanical shutter any, especially when you start to get rolling shutter like with the fox. Thanks for the work. What is your instagram?
The R7 mech shutter is very loud
Sound and shake on mechanical and the rolling shutter in real world does not affect the image. And at 15 to 30 fps if it does warp like the fox, I have 20 more exactly like it. That's what I show the whole sequence of shots to show how it does or doesn't affect. And usually "my" keeper rate is different for what I want as portfolio, insta shots, or wall hangers. The only keepers for me where the 4 on the log.
my opinion rolling shutter is all blown out of proportion. DO the things to mitigate its effect same as you do for slow shutter speeds, harsh or low light etc for other things ;)

@@WILDALASKA You never mention the buffer of 1 sec in the reviews. That worries me as I do a lot of aviation work, and a single fly past lasts longer than the buffer. Is it because you use Mechanical or CRAW or what. The buffer is my main concern. how do you overccome that 1 sec cut off. Nice review. I will use it with my ef 100-400 MK II mostly before I can afford a 100-500 here in South Africa.
@@stefaanbouwer2281 There s no 1 sec cutoff. The buffer when you just hold down the shutter in electronic H or H+ is going to depend on your SD card speed and amount of information per image.
If you have a V90 SD card and a lot of info per pic on H+ (30 fps) you will get almost 60 frames - which is 2 seconds. You average info per image you will be almost 7 shots. That's almost 3 seconds. if you need more than 3 seconds then either do 2 second bursts or drop to H for 15 fps and you can get between 150-200 shots before the fps drops to around 7-10 fps.
