Thanks. 5 Months in on the channel; so hopefully it will gain traction. I love making the videos and the community has been great :) Oh an I've watched some of you videos also and subscribed. Very good channel :)
Incredible video! Easily the best one out there :) One thing i'm confused about is the difference between subject detect and eye detect. Does subject detect use eye detection? Is using eye detect back button focussing the same as using subject detect with eye detect? If I've got a back button eye detect focus, why do i need it turned on in the main settings menu? Shouldn't this be turned off like subject detection? Again amazing video, subscribed so I i can learn more 🎉
Glad the video was helpful. Subject detect says what type..animal, car, person, etc. Eye detect adds to subject by looking for an eye. you base af is single point in this setup and the eye detect af-on button overrides the assigned in menu single point. just follow the set up and watch this video here to see how I use this setup in the field ---- ua-cam.com/video/K9HdS81rp7E/v-deo.html
G’day Wild Alaska I just want to mirror all the other fine comments about your tutorial style and information. Brilliant thankyou I have used eos 7D mk1 and more recently 5D MkIV both adequate ef mount cameras. The R7 is my first foray into mirrorless and animal/eye tracking. A considerable stumbling block for me was investment in ef long fast lenses, (would they work) I’m pleased to report they all work seamlessly even f4 500mm. With your information I’m so much better off again - no need to reinvent the wheel. Thanks again. I’m looking forward to your complete settings video.
Thanks for the explanation of the AF/button set-up. I am still trying to find a good customization that doesn't depart too far from my dSLRs (which run mostly unmodified), and all these customizations are proving a headache...
That's a nice setup. I have mine set up a lot like that with full-screen focus on the main focus button and single point on the *. I think I may try Auto in the case settings area and see how that goes. Thanks!
Decoupling the subject tracking was the main find for me. So I could get the single point correctly. And loved you macro spider pics in your last video ;)
@@WILDALASKA I think when I do sports photography I will turn the tracking back on but for wildlife I definitely want my single point to be a single point and stay a single point. Lol
Enjoy your video, especially now I know the R7 camera a bit better. Have you done a video on the best & quickest way to change exposure compensation in Manual (or Fv, if better) mode on the R7?
yes use manual AV,TV, and ISO. Get out of auto mode :) Have the histogram in your viewfinder and watch the exposure change in realtime and compare that against the histogram for blown out highlights or shadows and your good :)
I would be interested is seeing a video of your R5 set up. I mean I have dual back button set up but I would like to see the things your set up differs on.
Thank you for your detailed video. Do you note important rolling shutter issue with the R7? I own an EOS R and I have a lot of rolling shutter issue. Thank you.
i'm not on the R7 yet, one thing i like to do esp for birds in trees where there are many branches is to switch between servo and one shot the reason for this is i have my M50 set to 5x mag and smallest box when in one shot, this allows me to pick a bird out between the branches alot quicker i'm guess the eye detect in the R7 does alot of that for you though? great video
if it can find the eye then yes. but a lot of the time if a bird is amongst branches I just use single point and find a part of the bird which gets me in its focal plane. Then it may find the eye or I just shoot on that focal plane. But I stay in servo.
Why would "Eye Detect" automatically default to animals? It seems with * button set to Metering and Af Start you can specify in the Info Set to detect eyes and track animals. With "Eye Detect" there is no Info Set Options. What if you wanted to set up for Eye Detect in humans vs animals? Great Video by the way! Thanks
then you would set up custom configurations for each stills mode. The Af_On is set to eye detect of your choice and * is set to single point ( you select this one in the af method for this to work)
Thanks for this. Very helpful. One odd thing I’m experiencing is that my spot detect seems pinned to the corner occasionally and I have to use the touch screen to move it into the center and then the normal af works fine
you probably bumping the joystick or pad if you have the af points button below star button still mapped to default. Happened to me before I remapped the buttons ;)
@@WILDALASKA I’ll keep an eye out. Also after following your advice to remap that button, it’s not zooming when I’m in review mode. How do you zoom in on images for review?
@@bryanbischof4351 I usually use the touch screen as I view them from the lcd as opposed to the evf. IM not sure on mapped buttons for the zoom. not near my camera right this sec or id look
Starting to miss the simplicity of my DSLR. I feel like a total beginner learning how to shoot again. First time out was a disaster trying to focus on anything moving with my Tamron 150-600.
id think about swapping out to a canon ef/rf lens which will help as the tamron isn't very compatible with the Rf bodies. ill be doing a in field R7/R10 video soon which may help some.
@@WILDALASKA The other day my R7 completely shut down and I couldn't get it working until I took out the battery and reinstalled it. It happened just as a bird flew within a few feet of me. I was cursing it for sure for missing the moment. It hasn't done it since. I think the bird gave off an EMP or something, lol.
@@WILDALASKA I wonder if it overheated, but I was walking about taking very few shots with it on power save. It also was not that warm. Barely t-shirt weather.
As an adjunct to my previous post, if I keep AF on the shutter button, the Spot focus works perfectly (just as it has on the R5 and R6 for me), but when I assign the AF to AF-ON button the Spot function does not work-it produces the "jumping boxes".
Something must be set off as they way I have it set it uses the single point using the star button mapped. maybe default the camera and start over maybe?
Much appreciated. I will try all your settings on my R7. What did you do with the shooting menu page 1 "Dual Pixel RAW" setting. Mine's disabled. When I enabled it I got all kinds of warnings of things that I couldn't set. Thanks.
I contacted Canon to ask about CRAW and they confirmed that CRAW is NOT a lossless algorithm, RAW is, mathematically speaking. Which isn't to say you can "see the difference". Personally if I want compression I will use JPG, if I want lossless I will use RAW. I don't see a reason for CRAW. Memory cards are cheap enough IMHO, but everyone has there preference.
how do you keep the single point focus to stay in the center of the frame... Mine keep jumping to different areas of the screen. I always have to recenter it. I use a Canon R7.
Thank you very much. I have learned a great deal from your videos. The reason is that you go into geat detail. I look foroward to all of your next videos. John in Colorado@@WILDALASKA
I turned off Subject Tracking as you recommended, but when I use Spot focusing, in the VF I see the small box with the dot as always but when I press the AF-ON to focus, I still get the "jumping boxes" and the focus moves over the screen before settling on something. I can switch between focus areas as you do and I can see the large box (Zone) and the small box with the dot (Spot) but when I attempt to focus both area selections behave the same-produce the "jumping boxes". Any thoughts?
Thanks so much for taking the time to explain your setup. This is my first mirrorless camera and I'm trying to figure out how to achieve focus the quickest with my bird photography. I setup my back button focus according to this gentleman's video at ua-cam.com/video/vpEGBiIMAZk/v-deo.html before watching yours. It looks fairly similar to yours except that you've included an additional button to start/stop tracking. I went out for the first time today and I would initially achieve focus with the AF-ON button which was set to spot AF. Then once I had the bird's head in focus I would press and hold the * button which is set for EyeAF and this would seem to track the bird, and I got reasonable results, though sometimes the bird would fly off before I was able to activate the EyeAF. If possible could you explain how your setup is different? Alternatively, perhaps an additional video where you explain how you actually use your setup (and when you press which button) in the field would be instructive.
You're working too hard to get focus. You just need to use the Eye AF button and its going to look from corner to corner of the frame for an animal and its eye. That's why I have the first button set to eye AF and second to spot. Eye AF will grab eye, head, or body if it can find it which it does majority of the time. IF an animal is in brush or clutter and you can't see head or eye, I use the single point to hit a part of the animal to get the focus plane such as an ear, body, etc.. At that point I should now be seeing the eye through the obstruction and can switch to eye track. If it doesn't then I just go back to single and click. So quick wrap up. 1 Use Eye AF 90+ percent of the time. Which is the first button and it is isolated from the other close together * and focus points button. So easier to click. 2 if there is obstruction for the eye or head then use spot and try eye af after that or just get focal plane with spot. And good idea for a video. Love getting those for content ideas. Thanks and welcome to the mirrorless world.
@@WILDALASKA Thanks for the clarification. So much easier! The AF-On button is definitely more comfortable to press. I went ahead and switched the 2 back buttons and look forward to trying it out. Could you possibly explain in what situations you would use the Start/Stop Tracking button?
@@toddfibus5781 ups know I haven't used it much at all. But where I WOULD use it is if I had more than 1 bird/animal and with it on you can see the arrows pop up on the sides of the box it is saying I want to focus here. If it is not on the one you want, hit the joystick and it will switch to the other one (if the arrows show up as it sees both subjects) Let me know how the new button layout works. Its been my 'comfy' layout, but everyone is different where things feel 'right'
The R7 is powerful and doesn't get a lot of respect. I don't care about rolling shutter. I use EFC all the time. I am using a Canon 100-400mm RF lens, and birds don't care about noise from 400m away. I crop in post and still get sharp pics.
A bit of a different method: I watched a video where a guy setup two back buttons, BOTH as ‘Metering and AF Start’, but each with completely different settings. He did as you did and uncoupled AF Start from the 1/2 shutter button press, but then assigned Metering and AF Start to both the AF-ON button AND the * (asterisk) button. When he was setting the custom button choices, while Metering and AF Start was highlighted in blue, he hit ‘INFO’ and up popped a whole list of settings, so that the AF-ON button had completely different settings than the asterisk button, making both different variations of the same function. In this Info menu for the button assignment, he was able to specify: Servo AF characteristics; AF operation; AF area; Subject tracking; Subject to detect; Spot detection; and Eye detection. I thought this was honestly kind of a game changer. Here’s his video (he starts talking about it at 1:03:10): ua-cam.com/video/bzb2NSzWLs4/v-deo.html
Thank you .... excellent tutorial, especially for people like me, for whom the R7 is our first mirrorless camera. Your tutorial has saved me literally days 🙂👍
The only difference between RAW and C-RAW is the fact that shadows can have lost some data. Raising the exposure by 4 or 5 stops in C-RAW can show some artifacts where it would be less or nonexistent on RAW. But that's mainly a problem in a very high contrast scenarios or the end-user borking the exposure all-together. Which is quite impressive when using an EVF.
Regarding cRAW and DXO PureRAW (from their website)… “…DxO PureRAW does not support compressed RAW formats such as cRAW, mRAW, or sRAW because it is not a true RAW format, contrary to what its name implies. “The biggest difference between the cRAW, mRAW, or sRAW file format and the regular RAW (full RAW) files your camera normally generates is that the cRAW, mRAW, or sRAW format has processing applied to it by your camera, while full RAW files do not. “cRAW, mRAW or sRAW limit the ability of programs such as DxO PureRAW to provide you with a complete suite of processing options, therefore, please only use the full RAW format generated by your camera whenever you want to use your image files in DxO PureRAW.”
Thank you very much! I was already using BBF and Animal Eye AF. Changing the M-fn to tracking is a great deal. Done! Changing the AF Point button to Direct AF area selection is a great idea. Done! Your tutorials are easy to follow along with because you take your time and speak at an easy pace. I purchased my R7 on release day but haven't used it much at all. Tough to put the R5 down but I really want to get to know this camera too. I'm new to your channel. I'm going to watch your other videos on the R7. Glad you came up on my feed. 🙂
Glad you found the channel and if there's any questions you have or things you want to see or curious about leave me a comment. Ya my R5 is still king, but the R7 is so fun to use and has a place in the toolkit for range, fps, etc. Hope you enjoy the other content.
Wild Alaska, try this.....you can set up the buttons to track animal eyes, people eyes and spot focus by selecting "customize buttons" then the button, then "metering and AF start, then in the lower left "Info/detail set." then you can select your case, servo, animal detect, eye detect....I've set up my AF ON button to animal eye detect, the * button to people eye detect and the DOF preview button to Spot Focus....You are far better at this than I am,but I thought you may find this useful
that's a cool set up. I mainly just shoot animals but I like the button approach. And I love that we can customize the setups in so many cool ways. thanks !
Don’t think five fingers will be enough, I’ve scheduled a sixth finger implant but seriously loved the video. Still waiting for my R7 but these settings will help me greatly. Looking forward to your line by line setup. Thanks again.❤
By going through the settings I noticed a somewhat misleading information which I thought I'll bring it to your attention. In the AF 5 menu the MF peaking settings is actually a very useful feature especially for macro photography, landscape or any other scenario when shooting in manual mode. When this feature is enabled the area in focus will appear in red blue or yellow depending on your preferred color. Note that the lens has to be set to manual focus mode. Oddly enough the AF/MF button on the camera will not enable it if the lens is set to AF mode. I hope this makes sense. Anyone else using this feature? Let us know.
Good info. I was playing with that feature for a few minutes and it was pretty cool, but as you said probably just macro ir a tricky shot where manual focus is needed.
Very detailed and concise. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I just got the camera today and have it set up like my r5, which resulted in a few head scratchers. I’ll give your settings a try over the next few days. Great presentation.
I am have just recently purchased the Canon R7 and am in the process of setting up the camera. Very good tutorial. I may have missed an important point, however, so I need to ask. What mode does the camera need to be in, in order to make these adjustments. In one of your other set up videos you started the video by stating that the camera must be in "Manual mode". Thanks for the help!
I was set on saving for the R5 for a while. Then I thought about waiting and waiting for the R1.....but thank you for affirming with your test videos so far about my confidence and confirmation in the purchase last night of the R7 for wildlife. I have the sigma 150-600 and saving for the the 100-500. Can't wait for it to arrive to replace my RP with its 5 fps to jump to 15fps and great auto focus of the R7. Sure there will be more noise than fullframe but nothing post processing won't fix and to be honest I enjoy the art of editing photos anyways.
Quick question. What's the purpose of the subject-tracking? I've noticed that subject-tracking doesn't *also* put the subject in focus, so what is it's primary function? I find that I more often just default to the AF-ON button we've used or the manual AF area. Thanks for the video. I have been using this for several weeks now and it's great.
Subject tracking when af is n to engaged shows you with the grey box where it sees the focus will go. Also if you are hitting any autofocus method it will focus on the subject detected close to the method selected or within the box type selected. Its off 99% of the time for me
Thank you for your in depth video in setting up R7. I hoping when I go to the which is a stones throw from my house...Will pratice Birds in flight which ive only just starting to do. Wish me luck... Thank you again. Lori
I'm using this R7 for one week, changing from a DSLR 5Mark II, and the results are very disappointed, concerning the ISO's. I was expecting for much better quality on ISI 3200, for instance.Do you feel the same ? Regards
Really like your clear cut videos. I do have a question. I have mine set nearly identical to yours, but what I am understanding is that even with subject tracking, focus must be acquired first. Once the subject is tracked, let's say a bird is flying towards camera and away from camera, I still have to keep focusing with AI Servo (BBF or half shutter). Is that correct assumption? Because with subject tracking, if something is not in focus, it allows only to track and be able to focus quickly when a subject is in motion. Is that correct?
A little confusing as I’ve never used back button focus. So to shoot all I have to do is press Af on to start focusing and depress the shutter to take the pic. ? Why do you have Mfn set to start tracking. Not sure what that is accomplishing? Thanks
t\its always tracking but the subject tracking on gives you a bit of where its tracking and ability to switch subjects. this video may help ua-cam.com/video/K9HdS81rp7E/v-deo.html
I have a quick question. When I’m in the Auto Focus settings (Tab 1), I can’t seem to select SERVO and it appears that I’m stuck on MF. I’m sure there’s a simple fix but I just can’t figure it out. If anyone could help me out I’d really appreciate it, thanks :)
Big difference in cRAW (for specific usecases): astrophotography. Its literally impossible to denoise with stacking light and dark frames, all the noise removing information as well as the noise in the lights are useless information for the stacking program.
I got my R7 and RF100-500mm lens yesterday and was so pleased to find your Channel this morning. It's really helped me get set up as this is the first Canon camera I have owned, and everything is very unfamiliar. Appreciate your no nonsense style, and so glad to hear you mention the wonderful Duade Paton. You both have a very easy style in your presentations. Thankyou :)
Hi, it is not clear to me how you will change fast the aperture. You say (around 18.30) with Q button. But with your setup with Q button you have only the Shutter speed
I keep the back to camera info all settings. Then I hit the Q button and use the touch screen. I don't change aperture a lot. I set it for my subjects action and only change it if the action does.
Great video! Get me started real quick, however I miss the next steps: HOW to tackle the buttons when you are in the field seeing a flying bird, a slow moving one or a one that sits?
I'm very new to mirrorless (and really anything better than my Rebel T5i haha), so I felt so overwhelmed with the customization of the buttons!!! (SO many buttons!) Thank you for showing your setup for the R7! It'll probably take me a while to get used to this system, but I really like the shortcuts you set up for working with the AF! I'm assuming it's mostly muscle memory to get used to this setup as well...so lots of practice is needed on my part. Great video and I'm looking forward to watching more on the R7! :)
Welcome to the world of mirrorless. At first the EVF will aggravate you, but once you get used to it, it will be your best friend. Ability to see all your setting, histogram, and exposure is amazing.
I have watched many of the other UA-cam videos with AF settings of R5/R6 - I have an R6 and mainly do birds - and just ordered an R7 as no. 29 in the queue.:-) Your presentation of the Canon R3/R5/R6/R7 AF is absolutely one of the best. I like how you explain WHY you do what you do. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED,
I have subject tracking turned off in the AF menu, and assigned to the Multi-Function button. However I can't seem to tell when it is turned on or off. The AF icon on the Q screen reflects whether subject tracking is on or off in the menu, but when I toggle it on with the M-F button, the Q screen does not reflect the change. So I can't tell what it is set on. I read that when you see the double-line white square it is on. However, if that is the case, then it seems to turn off after each time I hit the shutter or back button focus, and each shot I have to turn it on again. If I turn it on with M-F, should it stay on until I hit M-F again? And is there any way I can tell if it is on or off?
Yes I think mentioned it in the video. You set it to off in the menu and turn it on and off with M-Fn button. Anytime you hit the shutter, it will be off after that. Then you have to toggle it on after that. By hitting q you will trigger it off again as q is the settings and the settings its off
This video really helped me when I got this camera. The only minor change I made was leaving iso on auto and using the back dial for exposure compensation. I hope your channel continues to grow as your content is really helpful and entertaining. Cheers!
Glad it helped. Just meant to be a base and then you mutate it to your style which I like. Once you can get into the full manual mode the better. you can experiment with light more. EVF makes it much easier. Its just hair ore control im my experience. I used to shoot the Auto ISO and exposure comp on DSLR and took me awhile to move full manual. But very happy since.
Very helpful and easy to understand. Been using the camera a couple of days now as my first system camera and this is one of those things i struggled figuring out. You desevere a heck of a lot more subscribers.
Thanks for your great videos on the R7! I got mine today and was working on setting it to work like my R5 and this hit the nail right on the head! Great job! The R7 seems to be a really good camera and great value at the price point.
Hi, you said that shutter botton is always AF single point ... what about the metering method here? thats the only thing the shutter button will do then: is it the mode you set on? the icoon shown when assining the button is evaluative
The shutter button will only execute the shutter (take the image) and this method is setup only by using manual method which means you control the metering with aperture, shutter speed, and iso. you control single point by hitting the star button and eye detect by the af-on. You can watch this video on how to use it all in the field. ua-cam.com/video/K9HdS81rp7E/v-deo.html and here is a video with more updated setup. ua-cam.com/video/YE6iyp16lb4/v-deo.html
Still a question after using the R7 with the RF 100-500 a while. For BIF: what is the reason to set the "Subject tracking" to "OFF"? I made a setting at de C2-mode/program with an AF area-2 customized and "Subject tracking ON". This C2 i keep special for BIF. It's not always working well. Maybe wrong settings?
Scott, I know this is an older video but I hope you see this. I have used your video on the R10 to set up the autofocus and it's been working very well for wildlife. My wife has been using the R100 and the AF options simply suck. I have the opportunity to either get her an R10 as well for $699 or I can upgrade to the R7 for $1129 and give her my R10. I don't really care about the bigger battery or dual card slots, so it comes down to the AF and higher 32mp vs 24mp. According to the specs online, the R10 and R7 have the same AF system. However, having used both, is there anything in the autofocus function that would sway you to spend $430 more for the R7? I'm not going to spend $430 more for 32mp vs 24mp. Sorry for the novel, I really appreciate your videos!
No worries. I read all the comments. I have a video about not keeping the R10. ua-cam.com/video/6J5YcKFMYHw/v-deo.html Its a great camera, but what I was needing it for it didn't work out as well as I hoped and I had a friend that was looking for a camera just like it. As far as the r7 over the R10. The IQ is better on the r7 vs the r10 and it has a faster sensor speed which helps with rolling shutter, even though the r7 sensor is still slow enough to make you pull your hair out with the rolling shutter also as times. but if you don't mind the battery and you're happy with the IQ, then stay with the r10. I made several videos with it and took one of my favorite moose shots with it. its in this video. ua-cam.com/video/RHhKf38M83k/v-deo.html Both great cameras. I bet I didn't help at all did I 😂
You just need to know what your trying to photograph and watch your movement when shooting. Its a readout of the sensor issue. Its a touch slower than the R5 so you will see a little more wobble and movement. If your shooting something moving against you or fast changes of straight object or extremely fast object then switch to mechanical. rest of the time shoot electronic.
Thank you very much, it helped a lot in setting up my R7. Just one question please. After setting up the button just below the star button (the one with the blue magnifying glass) to do "Direct AF area selection", I found that when I review my images that the magnification doesn't work anymore. Did I do something wrong? Thanks from the southern tip of Africa (Cape Town)!
Thank you this was really helpful in helping me set up my first mirrorless camera going from a 90D to R7. I use back button focussing and shoot in Manual mode with Auto ISO. I want to customise a button for Exposure Compensation what would you suggest for this? Thank you Sheila Williams
The tutorial is very good, I am considering buying Canon R7 as a second body, I have the Canon R5 but these two cameras are a little different, this camera only has 2 wheels to change the exposure, I am old school and I do everything 100% manual, I have seen other tutorials but this one has impressed me in the way you configure the parameters and the buttons for different functions, you explain everything very well but I did not understand much how all this works in the field? the birds are moving fast and the light is constantly changing, do you use auto ISO for birds in flight and wildlife???? Regard.. and thank you for you Time.
if you still have this camera would love to see vids using EF lenses. I have an r7 and a 70-300 4-5.6 and 70-200 f4 L and Im having serious issues with tthe auto focus. Even when the camera finds the subject the lenses dont seem to find them and cant find anything useful anywhere :(. I cant afford other lenses so Im curious if its the lenses or my r7 seems the L lens should be compatible according to a couple sources
I use it constantly and never have issues with the auto focus. You can look through all my videos and see which were shot with the r7. A couple videos that may help are here ---> ua-cam.com/video/K9HdS81rp7E/v-deo.html. and ua-cam.com/video/YE6iyp16lb4/v-deo.html
AF Start will grab whatever you have set in the AF METHOD in the AF settings menu of the camera. If you have Eye detect selected there then when you hit AF Start then that is what you will get. So in my video I set the AF METHOD to Single Point. Now when i hit the EYE Detect button I get Eye Detect and when I hit AF Start then I get Single Point. Hope that helps.
Hi WA, loved this video, have assigned customisation as you’ve suggested, all works flawlessly with one exception, on playback my magnification button below the star button will no longer allow me to enlarge my images to check sharpness, is this a glitch or have I done something wrong - any help appreciated. Many thanks and keep up the good work
Hi, thank you for an excellent video. I have just received my R7 and your set up for the autofocus etc has been a great help. I just watched the video again and have a question. Regarding the "star" button configuration, I still have the small focus area with the 8 surrounding helpers selected, when I attempt to use it I can see the focus area but when I press the "star" button to focus it just reverts back to a single square so not seeing the 8 helpers working, just wondering if I have missed something or have a setting wrong, regards Mark
if you hit the star your going to whatever is assigned in the menu for AF area. If you want to 8 point you have to assign it there or use the focus area button to change it.
@@WILDALASKA thank you for your reply, I thought that’s what I was doing, I have assigned the button below the star as in your video with the exception of the additional 8 point, so when I select that I can see it on the screen and viewfinder but when I use the star button to focus the 8 point changes to just a square, the focus operates but I was expecting to see the 8 helpers searching for focus but in my case they disappears
Thanks for the prompt reply. As an owner of both the R5 & (as of today) the R7, your common sense approach to custom buttons is wonderful. While there are many videos on how to set up the R5, your logical approach on the set ups would be welcomed by many. The R7 set up but it is obviously different than what is available on the R5. You referenced this in your R7 comments. My point is that it would be helpful to make them similar in custom buttons but I cannot fully get there mostly because of some limitations in the R5 with the tracking. How do you adjust between the 2 with one as a primary and the second as a back up.
Grats on the R5-great camera. My back button are pretty much same just a little more spread apart. af-on is eye AF and * is single point. The muscle memory part is ISO. on R5 its the default dial and on R7 its the dial at the joystick. Ill make a how do I use the camera in field video this weekend hopefully. Im getting more comments about it as well as as SHOOT MANUAL video ;).
Great video already set some of the features same as that I like the mfn button idea will set that and the lower back button will def put that on my R7 as well about only difference I have is I like the lens ring set to +- exposure with auto iso set and the rear dial set for aperature Must say at min I’m a bit disappointed with the images from the R7 but that’s because I’m only able to get out for an hour after work before sun set and the iso well I had to unlock the higher iso settings but the results were totally unusable but then coming from a R6 with great low light capabilities I just need some time off work to try the R7 out in some good light and not be shooting such high iso 😢 great vids appreciate the effort you put into them 👍👍👍
Just shoot manual and no need for exposure comp. With the EVF you can see your exposure and histogram, so no need for exposure comp. set your shutter and aperture and then just work your ISO as needed. Ill make a video on shooting manual with mirrorless soon.
Do you have an equivalent video for the R5. You mention that you are setting up your R7 to be as close as possible to your R5 setup but I can't find a video on the R5. Thanks.
If that's the viewfinder/lcd option ( I don't have the camera in front of me) then that is the auto switch from lcd to screen. On setting 2 if you face/hand/anyhting passes in front of the viewfinder, there is a sensor you can see by the viewfinder that will turn off the lcd and only have on the viewfinder and vice versa if there is nothing close to the sensor. Hope that helps
Excellent info. My R7 will be here soon and I can already see getting the ideal menus settings in place for wildlife could be a little challenging. This helps enormously.
Thanks so much! This was a great video. I followed all of your settings but am also trying out changing ISO to the up button on the D pad and then using the wheel to change ISO. Will try it out more extensively in the field as well as your other settings. I’m looking forward to your future videos as I find them very applicable to how I will be using the camera. Coming from an 80D I’m new to mirrorless so your information has been invaluable.
Pretty much the same, but I did release a later video on some of my findings and any adjusted settings in this video... ua-cam.com/video/YE6iyp16lb4/v-deo.html and I have the long term video here ... ua-cam.com/video/Y3vXp0HAyrY/v-deo.html
Point of information you get a different menu than you are showing if the camera is in automatic, needs to be out of auto to get full menus like you are using. Thanks for video.
Very true. I may have stated I shoot manual at all times is probably why, but very good info ;) Which is my suggestion to everyone especially with the new mirrorless camera
@@WILDALASKA I was going to go manual but was playing around with auto when first got camera couldn't figure out initially why couldn't get the menus you were getting.
a great video for setup as i just got my R7, i would be lost without this video.
Glad it was helpful
How on earth does your channel only have 1.8k subs. Just keep publishing, your preparation style, and information, is excellent.
Thanks. 5 Months in on the channel; so hopefully it will gain traction. I love making the videos and the community has been great :)
Oh an I've watched some of you videos also and subscribed. Very good channel :)
This has been the most effective and helpful settings-management tutorial. Thank you. A game changer.
Great to hear!
Thanks for this! Just took my R7 out for the first time yesterday and am already getting some great shots. Your vids are a huge help.
Glad to help and great to hear !
Easy to follow. I have setup my R7 this way and am off to practise, practise, practise…. Thank you!!!
Glad it helped!
Incredible video! Easily the best one out there :)
One thing i'm confused about is the difference between subject detect and eye detect.
Glad it was helpful. And yes the Ef 500 F4 works great. Its my main lens
@@WILDALASKA well then that’s great I’m pleased I made the purchase of the R7 and happened by your video. All the best for the festive season.
Thanks for the explanation of the AF/button set-up.
I am still trying to find a good customization that doesn't depart too far from my dSLRs (which run mostly unmodified), and all these customizations are proving a headache...
👍
That's a nice setup. I have mine set up a lot like that with full-screen focus on the main focus button and single point on the *. I think I may try Auto in the case settings area and see how that goes. Thanks!
Decoupling the subject tracking was the main find for me. So I could get the single point correctly.
And loved you macro spider pics in your last video ;)
@@WILDALASKA I think when I do sports photography I will turn the tracking back on but for wildlife I definitely want my single point to be a single point and stay a single point. Lol
@@PhilThach agree
Enjoy your video, especially now I know the R7 camera a bit better. Have you done a video on the best & quickest way to change exposure compensation in Manual (or Fv, if better) mode on the R7?
yes use manual AV,TV, and ISO. Get out of auto mode :) Have the histogram in your viewfinder and watch the exposure change in realtime and compare that against the histogram for blown out highlights or shadows and your good :)
Great video! I love the video, I have watched it several times. As a result, I love this camera and I am getting good results. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks! Excellent explanation of settings for bird photography.
Thank You !
mmmm very interesting config. So easy to remember. I do a test this weekend....
Thx.
Did it work?
Excellent, top drawer explanation which I'll use when.... My r7 arrives!! Thank you, subscribed 👍
Glad it was useful. And thanks
Wow ... Great video with simple yet detailed explanation. I just subscribe and find the content is so valuable. Many thanks for sharing.
Thanks and welcome
Fantastic explanation about custom modes. Waiting for stock here in spain

I would be interested is seeing a video of your R5 set up. I mean I have dual back button set up but I would like to see the things your set up differs on.
coming very soon. Still making sure I know what everything is doing. Im working on the raw burst first. Its interesting how it works.
Thank you for your detailed video. Do you note important rolling shutter issue with the R7? I own an EOS R and I have a lot of rolling shutter issue. Thank you.
It exists but when your getting 70 shots you ay see 10 or with issues on erratic movement subjects. Easy to get around
thanks, I've pre-ordered and can't wait to get it having seen your videos
Awesome, thank you!
I really like the vibe of your channel...subscribed!
Yay! Thank you!
great video. really helpful. question: how do i change aperture on the fly? thanks!
either the control ring or the q button then aperture
Very nice. Thanks.
thx
i'm not on the R7 yet, one thing i like to do esp for birds in trees where there are many branches is to switch between servo and one shot
the reason for this is i have my M50 set to 5x mag and smallest box when in one shot, this allows me to pick a bird out between the branches alot quicker
i'm guess the eye detect in the R7 does alot of that for you though?
great video
if it can find the eye then yes. but a lot of the time if a bird is amongst branches I just use single point and find a part of the bird which gets me in its focal plane. Then it may find the eye or I just shoot on that focal plane. But I stay in servo.
Klasse gemacht gefällt mir außerordentlich gut Best Regards from Germany LG.Pidi
Danke
This set up works great, But I am trying to set exposure compensation in custom dials control ring on my RF 100-500 but it doesn't work any idea why?
have to have something in auto
@@ArcanePath360 my r5 has done that before also
@@WILDALASKA I wonder if it overheated, but I was walking about taking very few shots with it on power save.
Can you provide a link as to how you set up your R5. Hard to make the 2 cameras very different cause of muscle memory

I can put that together in the next couple weeks hopefully.
Much appreciated. I will try all your settings on my R7. What did you do with the shooting menu page 1 "Dual Pixel RAW" setting. Mine's disabled. When I enabled it I got all kinds of warnings of things that I couldn't set. Thanks.
I leave it off myself. It enables in stills to adjust the focus a touch. I've never used it in stills myself.
Really helpful
Glad to hear that
I contacted Canon to ask about CRAW and they confirmed that CRAW is NOT a lossless algorithm, RAW is, mathematically speaking. Which isn't to say you can "see the difference". Personally if I want compression I will use JPG, if I want lossless I will use RAW. I don't see a reason for CRAW. Memory cards are cheap enough IMHO, but everyone has there preference.
ok
Never mind need to be in auto ISO for it to work;)
;)
how do you keep the single point focus to stay in the center of the frame... Mine keep jumping to different areas of the screen. I always have to recenter it. I use a Canon R7.
I bump it all the time. I have the recenter set to the button on the dial and just tap it every once in a while to recenter.
Thank you very much. I have learned a great deal from your videos. The reason is that you go into geat detail. I look foroward to all of your next videos. John in Colorado@@WILDALASKA
please play around with the settings and see if you can find any hidden gems!! for us
oh I have been. seeing what gems are hidden
Sounds like something is still set with the subject tracking. Maybe set camera back to default and start again. Sometimes a reboot fixes all issues ;)
@@WILDALASKA same thing happens to me. I will set to Default and try again. Thank you so much. Lot's of learning to do here!

@@WILDALASKA thank you. I was fairly sure it would allow that just didn’t see it. Much appreciated.
If it is not on the one you want, hit the joystick and it will switch to the other one (if the arrows show up as it sees both subjects)
Let me know how the new button layout works.
👍
Here’s his video (he starts talking about it at 1:03:10): ua-cam.com/video/bzb2NSzWLs4/v-deo.html
lot of cool setups out there. thats what makes these camera so nice
Thank you .... excellent tutorial, especially for people like me, for whom the R7 is our first mirrorless camera. Your tutorial has saved me literally days 🙂👍
Glad it was helpful!
👍
Regarding cRAW and DXO PureRAW (from their website)…
“…DxO PureRAW does not support compressed RAW formats such as cRAW, mRAW, or sRAW because it is not a true RAW format, contrary to what its name implies.
“The biggest difference between the cRAW, mRAW, or sRAW file format and the regular RAW (full RAW) files your camera normally generates is that the cRAW, mRAW, or sRAW format has processing applied to it by your camera, while full RAW files do not.
“cRAW, mRAW or sRAW limit the ability of programs such as DxO PureRAW to provide you with a complete suite of processing options, therefore, please only use the full RAW format generated by your camera whenever you want to use your image files in DxO PureRAW.”
good info
I've had the R7 for months now and I would still be scratching my head if it weren't for your excellent tutorial. Can't thank you enough.

Don’t think five fingers will be enough, I’ve scheduled a sixth finger implant but seriously loved the video. Still waiting for my R7 but these settings will help me greatly. Looking forward to your line by line setup. Thanks again.❤
Coming soon!
I wish peaking & the guides were available during use of Full Time Manual Focus (which is available on some lenses when AF is set).
Very detailed and concise. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I just got the camera today and have it set up like my r5, which resulted in a few head scratchers. I’ll give your settings a try over the next few days. Great presentation.
the subject detect being on is what is probably messing you up vs your R5. That's why I turned it of and then set a button for on and off for it.

Very cool, And its looking like the R1 may not be out even in 2023 :(
Quick question.

Run all canon mirrorless photos through DXO pure raw or topaz denoise.
I have a video on the ISO performance of this camera. Actually 2 videos.
Is that correct?
this video shows how I use it in the field. ua-cam.com/video/K9HdS81rp7E/v-deo.html
Check the lens setting
Big difference in cRAW (for specific usecases): astrophotography. Its literally impossible to denoise with stacking light and dark frames, all the noise removing information as well as the noise in the lights are useless information for the stacking program.
I usually use just RAW as DXO PureRaw processes RAW more efficiently that cRAW.
Thankyou :)
Congrats on your new setup. You will enjoy it immensely.
Here ya go ---> ua-cam.com/video/hnrx9hJcE1Y/v-deo.html
I'm very new to mirrorless (and really anything better than my Rebel T5i haha), so I felt so overwhelmed with the customization of the buttons!!! (SO many buttons!)
Thank you for showing your setup for the R7!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED,
Thanks

So if I understand correctly, when you use AF eye-detect it does not matter which AF area you have selected?
In the setup I have in this, Yes. You can set it to only look for subjects in the AF box size you chose.
Thanks for your great videos on the R7!

You can watch this video on how to use it all in the field. ua-cam.com/video/K9HdS81rp7E/v-deo.html
and here is a video with more updated setup. ua-cam.com/video/YE6iyp16lb4/v-deo.html
If subject tracking is on and you hit your single point the af will jump to the subject and not to your single point desired
@@WILDALASKA ok. So: AF area-2 is ok, but then turn off subject tracking is best? Or just use single point?
Great video, I'll get back to these settings when I'll order my R7!
Thanks.
I have a video about not keeping the R10. ua-cam.com/video/6J5YcKFMYHw/v-deo.html
Its a great camera, but what I was needing it for it didn't work out as well as I hoped and I had a friend that was looking for a camera just like it.
I made several videos with it and took one of my favorite moose shots with it. its in this video. ua-cam.com/video/RHhKf38M83k/v-deo.html
Both great cameras. I bet I didn't help at all did I 😂
@@WILDALASKA That is very helpful, thank you!
how you can manage rolling shutter with the electronic one? Is mechanical best option?
Thx
You just need to know what your trying to photograph and watch your movement when shooting. Its a readout of the sensor issue. Its a touch slower than the R5 so you will see a little more wobble and movement.
If your shooting something moving against you or fast changes of straight object or extremely fast object then switch to mechanical. rest of the time shoot electronic.
Would this camera let me shoot exclusively in JPG only ? ( I never use RAW)
yes
Could you please make a video how to copy all your settings to SD card on R7
ive never needed to copy settings so not sure of the process
Thank you very much, it helped a lot in setting up my R7. Just one question please. After setting up the button just below the star button (the one with the blue magnifying glass) to do "Direct AF area selection", I found that when I review my images that the magnification doesn't work anymore. Did I do something wrong? Thanks from the southern tip of Africa (Cape Town)!
just use the touch screen and pinch zoom like you do on a phone, etc.
@@WILDALASKA Thanks, I will definitely do that.
Thank you this was really helpful in helping me set up my first mirrorless camera going from a 90D to R7. I use back button focussing and shoot in Manual mode with Auto ISO. I want to customise a button for Exposure Compensation what would you suggest for this? Thank you Sheila Williams
if you auto iso (which in wouldn't use as it over does the iso range too high for me) then assign it to the wheel around the joystick
@@WILDALASKA Thank you
The tutorial is very good, I am considering buying Canon R7 as a second body, I have the Canon R5 but these two cameras are a little different, this camera only has 2 wheels to change the exposure, I am old school and I do everything 100% manual, I have seen other tutorials but this one has impressed me in the way you configure the parameters and the buttons for different functions, you explain everything very well but I did not understand much how all this works in the field? the birds are moving fast and the light is constantly changing, do you use auto ISO for birds in flight and wildlife???? Regard.. and thank you for you Time.
I don't use auto iso. I set my shutter and aperture and leave it for the most part and im adjusting the iso on the fly at all times.
@@WILDALASKA OK, Thank you
if you still have this camera would love to see vids using EF lenses.
@@WILDALASKA thanks will check em out this so frustrating lol
Hello! Can you put the subtitles in Spanish please? Thank you!!
I'll definitely look into it.
Doesn’t seem like there’s a difference between the eye detection af and af start
Many thanks and keep up the good work
It should work as before as nothing in the setup changed that. You may want to reset the camera back to default and go through the steps again.
@@WILDALASKA many thanks, I thought exactly that, I will try what you suggest, thanks again, I’m enjoying watching your channel, keep up the good work
Hi, thank you for an excellent video.
Fantastic, waiting for mine to arrive and this video is a great learning start. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for your videos on the R7. I was wondering if you'd made any changes to your setup in the subsequent months.
I made a later video on the setup. It's pretty close to the original. ua-cam.com/video/YE6iyp16lb4/v-deo.html
That's great- thank you! @@WILDALASKA
Great video already set some of the features same as that I like the mfn button idea will set that and the lower back button will def put that on my R7 as well about only difference I have is I like the lens ring set to +- exposure with auto iso set and the rear dial set for aperature
Must say at min I’m a bit disappointed with the images from the R7 but that’s because I’m only able to get out for an hour after work before sun set and the iso well I had to unlock the higher iso settings but the results were totally unusable but then coming from a R6 with great low light capabilities I just need some time off work to try the R7 out in some good light and not be shooting such high iso 😢
great vids appreciate the effort you put into them 👍👍👍
Run all your images through DXO Pure Raw. It has a 30 day free trial. It gives the correct camera profile for colors and noise levels
@@WILDALASKA I’ve looked into that a I noise reduction stuff and sadly it’s not available on iPad Pro 😢😢
Can you please do a tutorial about how to set up exposure compensation?
Just shoot manual and no need for exposure comp. With the EVF you can see your exposure and histogram, so no need for exposure comp. set your shutter and aperture and then just work your ISO as needed.
Ill make a video on shooting manual with mirrorless soon.
Do you have an equivalent video for the R5. You mention that you are setting up your R7 to be as close as possible to your R5 setup but I can't find a video on the R5. Thanks.
I will be doing that video here in a week or so (the R5 autofocus settings I use)
@@WILDALASKA Thanks.
Yellow wrench page 4 or tab 4 your screen/viewfinders display is set auto 2 what’s the difference 1or2
If that's the viewfinder/lcd option ( I don't have the camera in front of me) then that is the auto switch from lcd to screen. On setting 2 if you face/hand/anyhting passes in front of the viewfinder, there is a sensor you can see by the viewfinder that will turn off the lcd and only have on the viewfinder and vice versa if there is nothing close to the sensor.
Hope that helps
TY
Excellent info. My R7 will be here soon and I can already see getting the ideal menus settings in place for wildlife could be a little challenging. This helps enormously.
Glad to help!
Great to hear!
Hi now you have had r7 a while now has your wildlife settings changed or still the same as this video thanks keep videos coming
Pretty much the same, but I did release a later video on some of my findings and any adjusted settings in this video... ua-cam.com/video/YE6iyp16lb4/v-deo.html and I have the long term video here ... ua-cam.com/video/Y3vXp0HAyrY/v-deo.html
@@WILDALASKA yes watched them cheers look forward to more keep them coming job well done
