I believe the plan is to ramp up Texas, then retool Fremont for the new cells and castings. The cant afford to take Fremont off line for major changes until Texas is running at a good clip. Chip shortage might actually help in this instance - Texas can take all or most of the chip slack when Fremont is down. Limiting the impact of taking a factory out of production.

I think you are on the right track. I also believe that in the interim that Tesla will distinguish the Texas units from the Fremont units with a different range and price to accomplish whatever transition order balance they need. I don't think people will put up with the chance of getting two radically different cars at the same price. They'll go to another state to order the one they want if they have to. It would just totally piss people off to get a lesser model but pay the same price so I don't think this is a good idea not to distinguish them. Tesla should not put impediments in the way of getting the longer range vehicle with the front and rear castings. Just make a temporary newer version with longer range and higher price and ship the ones from TX to where ever people want them as long as they are willing to pay more. When all the vehicles have both castings and the 4680, then obsolete the interim version.

@@aklnz1234 Yep. That is a reasonable thing to do but there will be a period where they don't have Texas ramped enough to supply the demand for Model Y so both will need to build Model Y for a while. My best guess is that they will create a new version--Ultra Long Range (ULR) which will be the model from Texas and it will be at a premium for a while until they can ramp. Then eventually they will either have Fremont building with front and rear casting and 4680 also or transition it to LFP versions. I don't see any way it isn't going to be an issue during the ramp so hopefully that will be a very fast ramp.

      Fremont currently uses all 2170.
That's a different *car body* to the 4680 vehicle.
The expectation is that 4680 will be for ONLY the performance (+LR?) models?
If so, and if the SR uses "conventional" LiFePo4 prismatic cells, I would expect Fremont to produce those cars.
(Lots of spare 2179 for powerwalls)
      The other option? A 4680 LiFePo4 cell.
      THAT solves all the problems.

I believe there is one issue missed in this presentation. They refer to the "surprise" of which factory your car will come from as being revealed on delivery. Acutally prior to delivery you will be assigned a VIN for your car. The 11th charcter in that VIN identifies the factory "F" or "A" where the vehicle was built.

Given all this, I would expect these innovations to go into the C.A. factory very quickly.

On the one hand having 4680s would have a lot of benefit as you mentioned in your video, and on the other hand there's something to be said for tried and true. Why would you trade cars every two years? I do not understand that at all. You take a bath when you sell it, and paid a lot more for it new. If you bought a 2-year-old car and then sold it after 2 years that would be better.
Seems a lot of Tesla owners do this. Constantly buying a new one and selling the old one, some of that is due to good resale value. But it just seems kind of ridiculous to me. I bought a 9-year-old Toyota 4 years ago for $2k, that had 200,000 miles on it, and I have put another 192,000 miles on it.
And the operational costs for me are about $0.08 per mile that's fuel , all maintenance , and tires.

    Regarding the 4680 tabless design.
I would use the analogy of a train full of passengers.
If you open one door at each end of the train to disembark, it's going to create a bottleneck of passengers walking the length of the train.
The 4680 is all doors open, short path to the exit.

The air shocks for the Tesla Model S cost about $300 each to replace, if it's $1,200 retail for all four, I would think the manufacturer could charge even less for them.
There are some aftermarket suppliers now for suspension also. I think most people just complain that the springs are a bit too stiff, this is probably to make the car handle well given its weight. But there's an awful lot of people that would trade a little bit of handling capability for a better ride.

What a great problem to have - do I want the best, or the one that's better than the best? I think the only way they can avoid Osbourning the Fremont vehicles is to put a premium price and label on the TX models with all of the upgrades. They can call them Ludacris, Plaid, or Texas Edition or whatever and charge an extra $10K or something. They'll have to or else they will get a bunch of people who will reject the Fremont ones in favor of a TX one. It will be the most expensive car I have ever bought, by a country mile, but if the stock does okay over the next year or so, I plan to get two M Ys, and then trade in one of them for a CYBRTRK when it comes out.

A Model Y (with only a driver inside) is very close to scraping the body as well, and would probably do so at a speed any faster than a turtle.

I'd be curious how the new battery pack impact the potential repairability of the battery pack. I wonder how they would repair or replace a cell or group of cells without replacing the whole thing. With the current battery system this is a huge hassle, but a pack of cells can feasibly be replaced. If this is a structural component of the car I would also be worried about having a very fancy paperweight if anything goes wrong out of warranty. It may have been addressed but I haven't seen or read anything about it.

One of the reasons Tesla is using this new pack is because it’s much easier to access/remove from the vehicle. They are also totally changing the way things get installed and install the carpeting and seats on top of the pack before it goes into the car. That way the assemble operators don’t have to work inside the car. They do it on the battery pack and then it gets inserted in the vehicle from the bottom. Also, makes it much easier to service and quicker to drop the pack from underneath.

Actually the Chevrolet Bolt is definitely repairable. And Chevrolet will sell you the parts unlike Tesla.
The Tesla packs can also be repaired at least in the Model S.
Gruber automotive has some videos on repairs they have done. But in the Model S the battery is sectioned into different parts. You can't replace individual 18650 cells. But you can replace an entire section with a known good one.
I don't know about The newer battery packs in Tesla's however. I think I saw on Sandy Monroe's video when he tore down the Tesla Model 3 and why that the battery packs are essentially completely glued together and you cannot separate the individual cells.
If you want to see a complete tear down of a Chevrolet Bolt EV
Weber Automotive on UA-cam has a great channel that deals with a bunch of different hybrid vehicles, and electrics also. He runs an automotive technical college, he's very detailed about theory of operation and disassembly.
The Bolt EV is actually pretty easy to work on. You certainly would need a lift and a hydraulic table to get the battery pack out safely. But that's true on the Tesla as well. Once that battery packs out pretty easy to disassemble and get the components out.

We love all aspects of our brand new, Shanghai made, UK registered Model Y Long Range on standard 19inch rims, except for one potentially fatal flaw - NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) of the Model Y designs of Giga castings are still in serious doubt, in our view. OEM's of ICE vehicles have had to give serious design attention to isolating NVH from rear suspension sub-frames on their vehicles, such as in the BMW X5, as just one example. We have loved the almost 2 years now of Model 3 Long Range ownership. We are also Tesla shareholders and have a reservation on a Model X Plaid so, we could be called Tesla fans. However, we collected our brand new, UK Model Y Long Range last Wednesday, 23rd February 2022, to run alongside our Model 3. From the Shanghai Giga factory, our Model Y seems to have a rear aluminium die-cast, Giga casting and pressed steel fabricated front frame. Driving back from the NEC to Loughborough, the Model Y had horribly loud, low frequency sound pressure wave booming in the cabin, caused by either, some manufacturing fault(s) or by design, inadequate NVH isolation of the rear suspension and Giga cast chassis frame from the cabin, as the tyres run on the road surface. We get headaches and ear pain from this loud, low frequency, resonating booming - even at low speed, each time we drive this Model Y.
The car also seems to be so harshly suspended and so unsettled on the road, that even on basic Autopilot and without turning the wheel at all, it fidgets from side to side at speed and makes us feel nauseous - something we have never experienced before in any vehicle and certainly, not in our excellent Model 3 Long Range.
The booming, deep reverberation, amplified within the cabin volume as the suspension crashes over bumps, is like having the bass turned up high at a rock concert and the drummer giving it special attention every time a rear wheel drums over a road imperfection.
Tesla UK Sales say that "as the car is obviously not for us" they can only offer a full refund and that we should return it to Tesla. Tesla Service have been persuaded to cut their initial waiting time of 1 month to Friday this week, for us to demonstrate this problem to them.Tesla owner's forums seem to regard this as a common Model Y fault. We love our Model 3 that seems not to have any Giga castings and certainly, does not display any of these awful symptoms.
But, we draw the line at having had to pay £55,000 for a Model Y Long Range, to suffer so much unpleasantness as for it to be undriveable by us. Even ear plugs don't seem to help much, as the bass reverberation seems to resonate within one's skull. Until finally resolved by Tesla, the car is just a very expensive piece of driveway art.
After waiting so long for the Model Y to be available in the UK, we are very disappointed so far.
So for us, we feel that the jury is out on the whole question of whether NVH of Giga cast chassis frames, as currently designed, manufactured and supplied by Tesla, actually give an acceptable quality of vehicle to the end user, despite the obvious manufacturing cost and efficiency benefits to Tesla.

One likely way to ensure routing your order to Austin will be the color selection. The new paint shop in Austin will be able to offer the three new shades that are not likely to be supported by the primitive paint shop in Fremont. In fact, the cost of upgrading Fremont to match Austin's build capability could be extremely prohibitive. I can't wait to see the new options (and prices) in the configurator around March! BTW -- one other improvement the video missed is the 10% weight reduction Elon mentioned on Battery Day due to the structural battery pack and 4680's reducing the need for additional steel bracing currently required.

They largely have castings for the front and rear of the car just not one piece yet. The difference in this part of the car isn't what really matters its the batterys. But they will increase the cost of the Texas model because of the new batteries and the casting. Meanwhile they will work to get Texas volume as high as possible and shut down Freemont to change the production to the new design.

Ive been delaying my MYP since 12/5 ordered 11/6. First it was for BBbetter tax credit hopes. Now its for 4680. I will not accept any 2160 car at this point as I am betting resale value of the new versions could be 5 to 15k more valuable vs the older model. They may reduce battery volume to compensate for the higher energy density and with programming the new car may not be any faster. But it would be lighter. I estimate 180lbs lighter as there was some paperwork for a increase for the model Y in payload capacity. Honestly they should just make the range and power better then they can justify the newer higher price because its a bit high now without the 7500$ rebate vs EV6 or Ionic5 models which are already cheaper. Plus batter life is huge potential difference. 4680 likely good for one million miles of life. thats like a 10 or 20k value over those miles if it holds true.
