It's one of the best demonstrations I've seen of separating a neck. I just cringe when wood gets pulled off the top under the fretboard and from the sides of dovetails.
Thanks, my grampy has a old Martin it’s bigger than that one but it’s hard as fuck to play. I’m gonna try this when he takes his nap. If you don’t have a steam gun can you just use a plumbers torch?
With all due respect, while this is a very well done video, it does not demonstrate how to do a dovetail neck reset. The video does, however, do an excellent job of explaining how to release a dovetail neck joint without butchering a fine vintage Martin.
Yeah and the coffee pot or steam technique is falling by the wayside as electric probe heaters have become super affordable and they don't involve loading the end grain of the neck and dovetail up with moisture that then needs to evaporate before the neck can be properly reset.
a pleasure to watch bryan work, teach-display a passion and expertise for luthiery .. .
This is absolutely fantastic!!! Would love to see an in-depth every step paid video series on this.
Loved the longer format video
This is real Martin guitars. Lovely to see this kind of a neckreset. Just great. Thanks.

This is fantastic! I spent a week with Bryan and Dan Erlewine in 1992 learning to do this technique.
Amazing information!

Do StewMac sell those old long kitchen knives ? I'm going to throw my old butter knife away. Seriously this is a master class in neck removal..
They do. It's $599 for a set which includes a butter knife and a customised kitchen drawer insert.
