So happy for you all to meet Shade! What are you looking forward to most in this series?
I am so excited to see the multi dog household as you bring Shade into the mix. I have a3.5 year old pit mix who still has a lot of fear of other dogs. I’m wondering if we might ever be able to add another dog to our lives. My dog has a high level of training and I’ve worked to help her learn to be neutral about other dogs in the world. I’m watching for help figuring out if/when/how we can go from neutral to more positive more interactive. Thanks for this series! I’m so excited to learn.
We are getting a puppy in March and are frankly a little terrified! We lost our beloved boy of 15 years in February and it has been a loooong tine since we had a puppy. He was disabled with a balance issue and our new one will be able to jump high and will not need lifting etc. so it is all going to be new... OY! We need you!
How to avoid reactivity
I always wish it would last longer but so excited for this new series with this beautiful handsome boy
Focus and lose leash walking. My Shannon is perfect with most other things. We have been together 8 months.
For anyone reading this: I know that dog training can be difficult sometimes, but you're doing great. Keep up the good work, and your dog (and your own sanity) will thank you for it! ❤️💕
I loved this episode and am so glad you're working with a giant dog breed. I'm an information junkie and I love all of the detail you're giving about their interactions and what they mean. Thanks so much to both of you for your kind and gentle training and teaching us the meaning of the subtle interactions between the dogs! Great job!!!!!!!!
So glad to have a training series to watch again, I've missed these. Shade is a handsome boy and it will be interesting to see him be shaped into a life companion for the family since he will be a pretty good sized dog. I know this is a short series, but I have a request I'm sure others would agree with - if you could meet up with Shade and his family next year when you're back in Alaska, we would love to see his progress and to see how big he's gotten. Looking forward to the rest of Shade's episodes. Thanks, and safe travels home!
I love the focus on their body language! Learning to speak dog is a new thing for me so I love seeing actual moments & you explain it all very well. Can't wait to see how things go with Shade!
So glad to have this content back!
I loved this! I adore watching y'all train dogs!
I'm so happy to come across this channel! I just bought a new puppy two weeks ago and this is very helpful! When will episode 2 come out?
Yeeees! I’ve been waiting for this series!
Veronica is such a cute and happy dog. ❤ I loved watching her and Inertia play
Shade is SO adorable! I’m glad to see a series where a large breed will be trained force free 🙂I think it’s so important to show how powerful positive reinforcement can be!
Can't wait to see a follow up in the 9 month fear period when he is 85 pounds...
I worked with Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds. You don't get a whole lot larger than that. Force free is the way to go--no matter the dog's size, breed, or even temperament (no, "tough" dogs don't need a "firm hand", they don't need someone to "let them know who's boss", they don't need aversive methods any more than a small breed dog does). Learning theory applies to all species (including dogs--regardless of breed or size).
@@janhankins911 there is no such thing as force free.
@@ZaryaTheLaika because people are still using ecollars, like smart people do.
@@jdrankwalter Really? Well, that's news to me and I'm sure it's news to people like Dr. Sophia Yin, Dr. Marty Becker, Dr. Karen Overall, Dr. Nick Dodman, Dr. Katherine Houpt,, Dr. Patricia McConnell (need I go on?), too. Thanks, I'll believe THEM. I know what kind of training, education, and experience they have. I have no idea what kind of training, education, and experience you have. If you make a statement to me that goes against what I've learned from science, then you'd better provide science in order for me to change my mind. You should amend your statement to "In my opinion, there is no such thing as force free". That's really interesting because I use this thing you claim doesn't exist every day. Guess I live in a different universe.
So since Shade was adopted by a friend of yours, can we expect to see videos of you training Shade as he moves through the adolescent stage onwards?
Probably not, because Zak will be clueless on how to handle a Corso as it enters and goes through adolescence.
@@shannonfrink7939omg shut up
So glad I stumbled on this. I loved you in the Pupford trading videos but I was not as pleased with the other trainers. So nice to have found you. Currently training my 7 mo. Olde English Bulldogge. I look forward to this series and more from you!
So excited for this series
Your videos are the best! I’ve had two adult dogs that are now well adjusted and happy in society by following your science-based methods. Did I mention science-based? Other dog trainers could never 😮💨
Shade is gorgeous!!! 🥰 I do hope that you talk about the need for the guardian to have training too. There are a few dog trainers around that promise to train your dog for you and while it sounds great, we all know that training is an ongoing process that requires the guardian to continue with and new dog guardians need to be aware of this. Also a lot of those "we train your dog for you" trainers can be a little uneducated themselves 😬
These couple of weeks are such a good opportunity for both Shade and Veronica, socialisation wise! It can be difficult for dogs to know how to behave with a dog of considerable size difference and a controlled learning opportunity like this is invaluable!!! Of course Shade is going to get so much valuable exposure of all kinds, during his time with you! We are all so lucky for this series!!! ❤
This puppy is adorable 🥰
Zak, thank you for this!
Right now I can't wait for you to teach him how to properly walk on the leash, basic commands like "come" and "stay" & being good and confident on walks.
WE ALL WANT THOSE TWO THINGS - after house training. 😃
SHADE!!🎉🎉❤ I am particularly interested in watching Veronica’s adjustment, because we’re a multi-species, multi-size house. Our cats “raised” our dog from 8 weeks, but Shade is already so much bigger than V. (Yes, cats and dogs are different species, but the same emotional considerations apply.)
I just love Inertia so much. She is so lovely with this huge puppy.
Excited for the series. Can you talk about why his tail was cut? Is he a rescue pup? It is illegal in Germany as it limits the dogs communication just for optic reasons.
He is a rescue pup on his second home already. This happened at the breeders. I am personally opposed to tail docking as a practice as well.
It's the same here in Ireland, it is illegal to dock tails and crop ears 🐶 So looking forward to this series ☺
If I had to guess it was the standard a long time ago so they keep it traditional.
Used for hunting animals so the tail is vulnerable. If the enemy/hunted would have grab on to it the dog can no longer do it’s job properly.
This is so great! I just got a puppy last week as a companion for my other dog, so this series will be a huge help for my family. A huge thank you Zak to you and Bree 👏
Really excited for this series!
Not only for puppy training, but general dog information as well.
So much great information just in this video alone.
Thank you Zack!
Can't wait for the next one.
❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎🐕
Awesome first video I can’t wait to see more
Great first episode!
I've been using some of your techniques to train my kitten and it works suprisingly well. Really looking forward to this series!
Interesting point regarding the shake off. One of my 2 dogs does this every time that I'm about to clip the leash onto her harness. I thought it was to adjust and make the harness comfortable, but then why doesn't she wait until it's clipped? Now i know why! She's excited to go out and waiting for her turn. When it's about time to actually be clipped, she resets her emotions to be ready to go!
Looking forward to seeing how Veronica does with Shade. Little dog and big dog dynamic is one I deal with often in my business.
This might be the first series I'll watch from beginning to end; I'm quite curious how it will turn out. It will take days (or weeks) before Shade will fully adapt to the new environment, and we'll see his real self; but I'm optimistic, he seems just a typical sweet puppy.
I like how Zak tries to include the unavoidable struggles, and how to cope with them. Guess what, people are struggling a lot when raising a puppy, and "but it worked perfectly for the trainer!" doesn't help.
I know Zak is not enthusiastic about Dog Parks. But I have one near me, and my Shannon does really well there. It is large but not too large. And sometimes she connects with many dogs and sometimes not. But we always come home pleased with ourselves. 🤩
So excited for the new series!!
Thanks for an awesome video. Just curious with the box subscriptions has anyone here bought a subscription but then had to cancel for some reason? Just trying to figure out what their cancellation policy is
Gets sooooo excited when someone comes to the house
This is why I subscribed to your channel....I just love this. Shade is stunning!
Glad you like the video!
What kind of collars does Veronica and Inertia have?? Are they GPS?
Hi Shade! So cute! I have an idea for next series how about a 1yr old! Has the skills but selective. A husky or husky mix!
No way mate I'd like to see Zac take on a 1 to 2 year old untrained maremma!!!!! He could NOT HANDLE IT!
@@joysdogtraining I don’t care about your feud so take it off my post
Love love that you are doing a series like this. I was an avid fan of your videos on Inertia as a pup when you first got her. I wished I had followed them with my own puppy, but she was already 6 months by then. I knew a certain amount but I would bring up a new puppy SO differently now. Pining for a new pup so this will be invaluable when we hopefully soon take on another puppy.
How do you know when to comfort your puppy/dog when they are nervous/scared vs when comforting them is reinforcing the fear?
Shade is such an adorable one~👍
Thank you for sharing this video~🤗
I love your videos. I would love you to bring them more frequently. Thank you for your job! Greetings from Barcelona ❤
I am so happy to see this! Very helpful, as always
I'm so glad!
My dog is exactly like Veronica. My friend has an 8 months old rottweiler-staffy mix and my dog observes and even plays zoomies when on a large field off lead but he gets nervous around him in the house
I’m just now trying to catch up and figure out this whole situation between the two of you.
But….
LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR… to anyone. THINKING OF GETTING A CANE CORSO! They are NOT for everyone!
I have one and get approached all the time. Some people who have them and have issues with their cc and want to know how I have gotten my dog to where he is now at 23 months…. Etc
To you ZAK. Shade is beautiful and so is the other dog :) excited to see the journey. I truly hope you plan to do this with shade for the next 2-3 years… as it will truly help anyone thinking about getting a CC… if they do… so they can hopefully not run into issues as I see quite often.
I’m going to upload a video of my cane corso and a 10lb 13 year old shitzu from a few weeks back.
They had never met prior.
He just reinforced that dogs fear of the construction noise by petting it while it was shaking. Why wouldn’t you get the dog on a leash , move further away and stand in between the dog and the trigger, letting the dog figure out that there isn’t anything to worry about and that you’re there to have his back. Moving closer very slowly and only when the dog is showing good progress. No petting, no baby talk, no treat association with fear. Good luck to the owner when this dog goes through the fear period at around 9 months and will be almost 100lbs and the only strategy they have is to cuddle their dog and console it. With all due respect, that’s a rookie error from Zak.
Shade is so cute! I'm so excited to see your progress! Could you do more videos talking about tips and tricks for dogs who have barrier frustration/ excitement reactivity? I've been using your methods with my dog and she's honestly been doing SO well but I would love to learn even more! And maybe one day, you could team up with Modern Malinois, a protection dog trainer who uses modern dog training methods! Keep up the awesome work!
looking for episode sequence I can find.
can't find episode 2...!
Does a dogs breed affect training?
I lost my beloved 12.5yo Cane Corso last week. She was a solid blue (aka grey...top breeders don't refer to them as blue anymore and refer to them as grey) whereas Shade is a blue (grey) brindle. But seeing Shade, took me back to her early training days. I also had an equally loved 9yo male black brindle Cane Corso prior
IMO Corso's are the best breed ever ...if you're an educated, dedicated and responsible owner.
Cane Corso's are the only breed I'll ever have, and will get another after enough healing time...BUT Cane Corso's are NOT for everyone and NOT just anyone should get/have one! Besides a lot of people not being an appropriate owner for this breed, very few people are aware that IF you find a homeowners or renters insurance company that will cover your home if you own a Corso, you will pay a higher premium... and/or they can simply cancel and drop your policy.
And on top of that, there's many municipalities that have bans/restrictions
I'm so sorry for your loss. I wish there were word I could say to make the pain and grief less, but there are no words that can do that. Know that time will heal.
@@janhankins911 Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words. She is greatly missed
Definitely going to follow this series. Would love to see you work with hyper little terrier types from zero. 😁 I have a hard time with my two Jackchis!
Do you have any information about who the breeder is. I’m looking for a great breeder any info would be greatly appreciated
How in the world do I potty train a new puppy before fully vaccinated when we live in the country and all kind of animals can roam through our yard and who knows if they have parvo. I find this a huge catch 22 and have no clue to a solution.
I wish I were training dogs in the mountains like that, those are beautiful views! Lucky dogs! God I love seeing dogs learn and gain confidence
have you thought about training Inertia to herd?
Are these all suitable for small dogs ? X
2hr lets go early. Also, is Shade a cane corso? Love ur vids! Just got a mini bernedoodle puppy and your videos are helping a lot!
Yes he is! And thanks so much for being here and commenting! 🎉
Great video, looking forward to see more of the series. I have a little lhasa apso mix and she is very athletic and fast. I would love to teach her how to play frisbee, what type of frisbee would you recommend for a little dog?
🍿🍿🍿 this will be fun
The harnass training made me think of blind UA-camr Molly Burke whose guide dogs are trained to put their own harnass on. She 'shakes' the harnass, and the dog will just come up and put its head and body into it. She only has to fasten it. So clever.
Sorry Zak, I couldn't help but wonder whether relocation training might be a good idea with a puppy, 1. this young, 2. at his second home already.
The way Shade wailed in the car and shook in the yard broke my heart - or, in less melodramatic terms, made me a little uncomfortable. After all, as you said yourself, he was basically abducted, taken away from everything he knows and brought into a brand new environment with dogs, moose and scary noises!
I guess what I'm asking here is, how is this manner of training more suitable and respectful than your usual weekly-or-so classes?
Not rhetorical, I genuinely want to know.
Thanks for all your work ❤
Beautiful puppy
I was waiting for this series!!! Loved the first episode. Will we see the airmatress come out in episode 2??? ❤😂😊
😊
I am a big admirer of Indiana! She is nearly as good at calming signals as my old dog Jasper who died this spring at the age of 15.
Sorry for your loss. 15 is a great life though!
SO sorry for tis huge loss- we lost our 15 tear old in February.
My dachshund pup is 14 weeks and thinks everything is a game including putting on a harness so I don’t need to use treats to guide him into it. He first tried on his hardness when we was 8 weeks so many that’s why he isn’t scared of it.
Both of my puppies aren't toy motivated at all but food, how do i get them to like toys?
I absolutely love your alls videos!!!
Thanks!
Have been waiting for this!
I’m really looking forward to this series, we are considering a second dog and it will be a large/giant breed.
What brand harness do you recommend for large dogs, for our current Great Dane mix?
@@ZaryaTheLaika But, are they any good for escape artists?
How old is Shade?
I can't wait for the next episode!
He is so cute!! I’m looking forward to seeing this huge pup get trained
Cool! Thanks
I'm excited to see how Shade adapts to the construction. My dog is scared of everything (to the point where i can barely walk him). There were so many signs when he was a puppy, but I just didn't know anything about exposure or desensitization.
It isn't too late to use desensitization and counterconditioing now. It may take a little longer with an older dog, but the process still works. You really can teach an old dog new tricks.
Good job!
Hi! Just wanted to see if dog trainer youtubers have checked out this one video where a guy trained his dog to speedrun a video game. At AGDQ 2024, Peanut Butter will be the first dog to ever speedrun a game at a major event! JSR_ has the full 27-min-long video of PB doing a full run of the NES game Gyromite back in July. I think it'd be interesting to hear a professional dog trainer's thoughts on the methods!
It looks like you are giving the dogs a lot of treats. Is that oke next to proper meals?
I just got my puppy a few weeks ago so this is fairly well timed for me! Woop
veronica is so cute!
Hi Zak!
Been with you for over a decade and I am a proud force-free parent of a 3 year-old Border Collie and Australian Shephard cross good-boy. He is awesome, super sweet and loves to play frisbee! I really want to use better flying discs but he gets so excited that he can't help but chomp down on the harder plastic frisbees a little bit, enough to create sharp edges and I fear him cutting his mouth when catching the damaged frisbees. So we stick to the kong flyers. The Kong flyer is great but I dream of throwing frisbees as gracefully as you one day! Just to be clear, I've only ever used dog specific discs/frisbees.
Let me know if you have any tips on gradually getting him to not chomp down on the harder plastic frisbees as he retrieves them. 🙏
Thank you for everything you do and I'm super excited to follow Shade's series!
I really like the sciency explanations of the why to do or not do things!
❤❤❤
Now imagine your potential without wasting energy focusing in other specially the competition..
Hi Zak, I have a very specific area to work on with my dog. She’s been with me since she was a puppy and now she’s four. I used your method to train her. She’s such a sweetheart around the house and on leash walk. However, it’s the off-leash dog park that we are really not having it. She’s always a vocal dog, and sometimes I can’t tell if she barks out of excitement or fear when she sees other dogs. We never got into a real bite with other doggos as I would always interrupt before more escalation as I could tell some dogs get annoyed with her behavior and some growling as warnings. Is there anyway I can help with her confidence to make doggo friends?
Stop going to dog parks, the behaviors you're describing will only escalade. It will only take 1 attack to cause reactivity and set you back.
I am a little concerned about how you pulled him of the couch and rushed to pet Veronica.
This can potentially cause a dog especially of his breed to resources guard places.
Can you explain why you didn't use a different way to get him of the couch.
He didn't pull him, he barely nudged him. If this gentle touch triggers anything in that puppy then he wasn't sound to begin with.
Ideally, you would lure a dog off with a treat (and give the treat when the dog is off the couch). Perhaps he didn't have a treat on his person at the time? I think Zak was concerned about the interaction between Veronica and Shade at this point in their relationship in such close quarters.
What about the rules he has about always having a treat in the pocket.
@@thecloudybee77.2 I didn't realize that was one of Zak's rules, perhaps I missed that somewhere along the way. So he made a mistake and didn't have a treat in his pocket. You want to crucify him for it? I don't know about you, but I've made plenty of mistakes and am still making them. Guess Zak and I are mere humans and not as perfect as you are.
@@janhankins911 it is not about being perfect. It is about setting our dogs up for success. Yes we all make mistakes that is fine. I just wonder why he didn't explain it and addressed it. He talked about why dogs shake of but did not address a better way he could have handled it.
Maybe he didn't think of it. Witch is fine. I just asked a question. I have the right to voice my opinion and ask questions.
Can you share how your experience with Shade differed from the other puppies, especially if breed and gender came into play?
Is it possible that some dogs are just simply bullies by nature? Meaning, that's just their personality, and no amount of kindness and trust will sway them from being dismissive, rude, dominant and aggressive? Plenty of people are like that. Can dogs be like that too?
i wish my dog would put the harness on that easily. He refuses to put his head through completely no matter what treats or toys we use
I’m interested in hearing about the science of behaviour. Also, Barkbox, come to Australia!
so this is my first time here commenting and i've really grown to like your show. i came after seeking positive reinforcement and desperation for obedience training as no one taught me about proper socialization for my maltipoo and now she's so feisty and anxious! she needs a ask george and bree in her life! she is so sweet and i don't think i could ever enforce harsh training on her as it just isn't necessary and breaks my heart to see collars and methods of choking their chain to get them in line. so sad.
I wish my dog would learn to stop chewing and biting seamlessly 😏

On this episode: Zach tackles his most aggressive dog yet, a puppy.
Really? My Shannon does a 'shake off' each morning when she enters the bedroom to let me know it is time for her walk!!! 😗 We learn a lot from you Zak. But the pulling continues even after 8 months. Not always - but 30% of the time. Her focus is hit or miss.
8 months??? That's so frustrating. Time to stop doing what doesn't work. There are many other trainers out there with better and faster results who have a lot more experience working with dogs and have a lot more knowledge. Look up Larry Krohn, Robert Cabral, Tyler Muto, or Tom Davis.
@@NakamitsuSama well, 8 months for ME. I am pretty sure Zak would have it perfect by now. I guess I am not as consistent as I should be.
