My Grandfather worked for the L&N. He was a machinist at the roundhouse in Wilder, Ky. He lived on West 9th Street in Covington. Sometimes when I visited him he would say "Did you hear that?" It was the steam whistle signaling the Ludlow yards to send a pusher engine to help push the train up that hill.
FWIW, your black cat is a Bombay. Still just a dsh but with gold eyes and extremely agile. I had one that lived 18 yrs and he’d walk the shower curtain rod while we were showering. Dang good at boxing, too.
Thanks Jaw Tooth! That mystery man on the tracks was strange. Thanx for the bonus cat and dog play video. My advice, be more vocal or talkative, tells us what days it is, time, why you are that location, do you have kids, do you have a job, do you love the area, do you eat sushi and steak. Train stories. Fishing and hunting nearby? More train talk. 🚆
Okay, sounds good to me. I do want to talk more but sometimes when I talk my mouth starts hurting. I had that operation back in January and it is still painful. Sometime I talk about the job I used to have working at the health department. I could say a lot about that. Thanks for the Super Thanks ! That helps for the gas and I appreciate it! JT- This is probably the best video you've made. What a catch with 1 train shoving a disabled train up that steep hill. I remember riding up that hill on a passenger train when it was Southern Railroad from Ludlow to Somerset Ky.
I been watching your channel for awhile just never commented I was born a railfan I used to watch them every day in Victorville ca since the early 90s that second set of DPUs we’re working there asses
That DPU answers a theory I had. Saw a train yesterday in Wyoming Ohio being pulled by a single loco and it was making the exact same sound that DPU was. I knew that thing must’ve been struggling considering the noises it was making and how long the train was, plus the inclusion of a DPU.
Wow, that DPU in the second train was just about thrashing itself to death! One heck of a grade to be taking 14,000 tons up. A great video with a bonus of a train in the opposite direction. Nice to see how Norfie is growing into a really good looking cat. She got lucky that day you came home and found her on the porch begging for food! She's got herself a good home and a real playmate in Chessie, what a lovely change in fortune for her.
Wow!!!! That was LIVE ACTION for sure!!! The second piece of that train was all steel coils so it was heavy by itself… every one of the motors shoving hard… what a show!!! START THE VIDEO, SON!!!!
Oh man you could hear that first DPU long before you saw it, wow all those DPU's were working insanely hard !! 👍 Then the bonus of the second train sneaking behind the first one. 👍 Super Awesome up & down hill shots !! 👍 👍
Good stuff, JT. I noticed at mark 7:34 and 9:23 how compressed the knuckles were, indicating how much the DPU's were pushing .. and yes, they were "on their knees" working to get that train up the grade. Thanks, and keep 'em coming and I'll continue to tune in.
Great catches of all the trains going through there! The 2nd was really having a struggle w the 3 DPU's and a 132 car consist! That one DPU was screaming for sure! It was loud on my end w headphones so lord knows what it was like being right next to it! Thanks again for sharing your videos with us along with your time and effort JT! That my friend was 28million lbs being pushed and pulled at its best!
Wow that was cool JT I never saw a train like that and for you to be there to record it had to be amazing then to see a train meet with the stackers now that was the icing on the cake rail on my friend 🚂🚃🚃
A lot of that "noise" was air hissing as the loco's went by. Take notice of a few things. The RR's no longer use SAND for traction on hills. The drivers(wheels) on the locomotives are literally pounding themselves into the steel rail to get traction. All the locos on that train were "high ad" truck equipped. The locos were blowing AIR constantly onto the rails to get clean steel for adhesion. The pull on that hill was pure traction and horsepower. GREAT to see!
Thank You for the great videos! We look forward to our daily viewing of them🚂🚃🛤️ We love Chessie and Norfie, so cute&adorable🐕😻 Love,Greetings, Blessings,Appreciation&Thanks from Pastors Nadine&Yogan, Phoenix,Durban, South Africa 🙋♀️🙋♂️✝️🙌👏🔥❤️🤗🙏♥️🇿🇦
Awesome video Jawtooth! Loved seeing and hearing that DPU pulling hard up the hill! Then seeing the 2nd train pushing it! Awesome catch there! Thanks for sharing!
What a train! Sure had a lot of horsepower pushing it up the hill. They were sure spooling up those superchargers on those locos. Kind of like with the river tow videos I follow. When the Mississippi is running high and fast and the boat is heading upstream, they will need several towboats to push the tow uphill. Great video. You should get a medal for going "above and beyond the call of duty" in the heat to get to these remote spots a long way from the truck. Fun episode of the "Chessie and Norfie Show." Stay cool and hydrated.
Was at Hamlet NC back when the yard there was a busy hump yard. A freight came in from the west (Charlotte) and took one of the two Wye leads to go north into the yard. While doing so, there was a bang, train blew air and went into emergency... and about 1/2 way between me (on the platform for the station) and that track, there was a loud thud when the coupler came back to earth... One has to be REAL careful around overlong long trains that are heavily loaded...
That was a really cool video. You sure couldn't say that train was bookin'! When they go slower, you can really get a good look at the locomotives and the different kind of cars. Always good to see Chessie and the kitty!
Jawtooth the Norfolk southern has been using pusher engines on the Ludlow hill for many years. Once they got up to erlanger,Kentucky at the level grade , they de-coupled from the train and went back down to the NS yard in Cincinnati.
Sometimes you have no trains and other times you have more trains than you need. But a great video. That 2nd train was really working hard to get that train up the hill. And the 2nd DPU there was just screaming. Love this one. Thanks.
Hey jawtooth great video brother that train is every railfans dream catch ain't it? The only way you could have done any better would be with a drone. How far were you from the peak of that hill?
Very cool to watch the other train 🚊 on the other track at the same time . At 10 minutes that southbound train seem to stop. The radio chatter I thought i heard said it had a temperature problem. Yes extra DPUs were loud. Great video. Have a great weekend Mr Jawtooth.
Watching your second train 🚆 commencing with locomotives Norfolk Southern 3672, 9613 & 3656 at the front, then that mid point single DPU 4318 @ 11'53" to 12'09" that was screaming in protest, wondered if the engine was going to blow up ! 14,000 tons.
Wow so Impressive. One heavy train helping another up a steep grade. That one DPU was going all out, full throttle to help this train. Never seen anything like this. Those steel coil trains are very heavy by themselves, now u have one helping another heavy train, wow. Norfie and Chessie are really a pair. Thanks JT.👍🏼
Back in the day, Southern Pacific, faced with mountains, figured out how to add additional locos to a train, both in the middle and at the end.. They simply called them ‘helpers’... DPU seems to me a modern day way of renaming things in an unnecessary way.
Hi There, Jawtooth! T.J. Here Again. I Want To Let You Know That I Watch Your Train Videos Quite Often And I Love Them! I Don't know If You Remember Me, But I'm The Guy Who Used To Live In Middletown, OH. I Recently Moved To Florence, KY To Be With My Fiancee. Pretty sure it was two trains that got connected together: the first train had the lead locomotives and the first DPU; the next DPUs were originally the lead locomotives of the second train, and then finally the one on the end, which I think JT mentioned in the video had been added at the bottom of the hill.
Lot of smoke coming off that DPU. Those tankers must weigh a ton (pardon the pun)! Most impressive JT. Chessie and Norfie get along so well, it's great to see. Not a care in the world despite being social media sensations and influencers. Cats the world over are rethinking that hate the dogs thing.
@@perchlarkin Just look at the the springs in the trucks, they're all smashed as far as they can go. Same for the tank cars. Most of this train was fully loaded going by the appearance of the truck springs.
Great railfan action w/big NS on a remote steep hill. That old say, what goes up must come down was in full effect in this video. Thank you for braving the heat and climb to capture it for our enjoyment.
Thanks for all of the hard work you put in so train fans like myself can sit back and enjoy the great videos you put out. Do not live in an area where it is possible to see much train activity so I need to rely on others. I am one of your best fans for sure. Thanks again.

You need a drone with that kind of action. Earplugs too! Thanks again Jawtooth.
17:14 From what I know about couplers, the spring is inside them to absorb the shock when rail-cars are humped and connected.
No, those are much bigger springs and they're inside, in the coupler boxes. That spring looked like a suspension spring from a truck.
Great find put your hands up grab ladder
