Worked at a coal fired power plant for many years. The amount of dust coming from the rail cars is determined by the quality, fineness and whether or not the coal went through a wash before loading the train. Also depends on the distance from the mine in which it was loaded. As the train gets farther from the mine it loses a lot of the surface dust from the top of the cars. Use a dust, mask when standing close to a loaded coal train. Great video. Keep it up.

As a kid growing up in East Chicago, Indiana (1940s & 50s) I remember the endless coal trains being pulled by gigantic steam engines on their way to the coke plants in the steel mills.
This brings back forgotten memories, I sware that I could smell the coal dust while watching your video.
And I usually had to keep my head down or my back turned to keep the spraying coal particles out of my eyes as the trains passed by.
With all the freedom and adventures we had as kids, it was a great time to be alive and grow up.

Well, in semi-rural Western PA most folks had coal burning heating and even cooking until the 50s. Folks with lots of kids and not so much money would go down to the railroad tracks looking for coal that was bounced out.

Only once, have I ever seen two large green plastic sewer pipes cut into a beaver dam, their inlets were placed lower than their outlets, so the water had to rise as it passes through these pipes. Supposedly, beaver are not able to "repair" their dam if they are unable to block the inlets, being placed below the water's level. Something tells me that the project was the work of our Massachusetts' Department of Environmental Protection.

Great video Jawtooth! I've never saw coal dust blow like that before! This reminds me of a story my mother in law once told me about the trains that used to come through in the area where I grew up, she said when she was a young girl sometimes after they would hang their washed clothes out on the line, the train would come through and coal soot would ruin their wash and they'd have to wash the clothes again! This was along the line off the old Lebanon Ky. Branch that ran from Lebanon to Greensburg Ky. We grew up and lived in the little community of Calvary that was along the line, sadly it's all abandoned now.

I was on a state survey crew when I was 19. They gave us a safety briefing about working anywhere near train tracks, and one thing I remember was to move away from the tracks, face the on-coming train, and watch for (and be ready to evade) any parts that came off the train. They said a loose wheel could roll a long way and do serious damage.

What a great catch. Caught one similar to this in Homestead, PA with a coal train back in the winter. Got the coal dust but it wasn't even close to how much dust blew off of this one. However, there was plenty of snow on it and that was blowing off too. Didn't get much of the coal dust as much as I did the snow. I was frozen when done! Then again, I’ve never been in or near a coal mine but both of my grandpas did now I fully understand black-lung. @@itsjustaguy27 that would make more sense. As for the other part of my comment I realize that some locations the train rail was there long before the town (maybe) and the town was built around it. You'd think they'd maybe put such fine dry stoor into covered hoppers! I guess they're all on grain shifting just now. It was shifting way too fast for such a dangerous load. I'm glad you don't smoke! The second coal train with the 4 loco's had 236 cars on it, give or take a couple. I've noticed the trains getting longer. I have seen videos of coal trains on the Union Pacific running at track speed in Iowa with no sign of coal dust. I think someone mentioned that in a comment on coal trains coming from the Powder River Coal Basin that they put a plastic coaling on the coal to keep the coal from falling off the coal cars and to keep coal dust down. I have also seen videos of Norfolk Southern coal trains running fast past the Lewistown, Pennsylvania Amtrak station with no coal dust flying or coal falling off the cars.

When they come out of the loading loop at most mines they go under a sprayer that bathes them in water. By the time they reach Iowa the crust on top hasn't broken off yet, so you don't see dust. It is a special solution branded Dustaid. Not sure what it is exactly (or how toxic it is). The Coal is usually wetted down to keep the dust down. These were obviously dry. Anyway, rules are different for public Roads vs Rail Roads. The eco- brigade in the UK would have a heart attack at the length of that coal train. This is how absolutely ridiculous it is over here -
Drax power station in England no longer burns coal, it burns wood chips as they're more "eco friendly". But the UK hasn't got enough trees to chop down, so we import willow chips from the Carolina's. They're diesel trucked down, loaded on to a diesel boat at Baton Rouge, Louisiana bound for Liverpool, unloaded, put in wagons then hauled by diesel train from Liverpool to Drax in Yorkshire. But we don't burn coal because it's not eco friendly. You just couldn't make it up!

Yup! In 2020, the USA was energy independent. We had enough oil and natural gas that we were exporting some to Europe. Trump rebuilt the strategic oil reserves. Gasoline was a little more than $2 per gallon. Then Biden took office. He reversed all of Trump's energy policies, shut down the construction on the Keystone pipeline from northern Canada to southern USA, banned fracking, cancelled oil leases and off-shore drilling.
So, gasoline is $5 per gallon. We have to beg for oil from OPEC, Iran, and Russia, people who hate us. We could be importing oil from Canada, a friendly country just our north. That oil would transported cheaply by pipeline. Instead, the oil we import from the other side of the world by diesel powered tankers. And, Biden just sold off nearly half of the USA strategic reserves, not to help our own people, but to other countries and much of it was sold to CHINA!
The Green-New-Deal, Climate Change is a scam designed to bankrupt successful countries and empower the elites. Wake up and vote these Green people out of office.

Years ago coal dust accumulation on the ballast was determined to undermine its stability and the cause of several derailments. This was like steam loco exhaust and by the time this train gets to its destination.it will have lost about the equivalent of one carload. Heck it was kicking out marble sized nuggets. Obviously this mine ran out or heavan forbid doesn't spray liquid binder on their loads. Too much dust then mixes with the ballast and when wet causes numerous track problems. So JT extra credit for the 🎥 that didn't blow fair trade winds. P.S. Fathers Day coming soon so make mention of the shirt. Hint Hint

Back in 1994 I rode a train from Shengzhen to Chongjing, China (about 1,500 miles) they used coal for everything including street vendors cooking and every day I would put on a new shirt and 4 hours later, I would have a black ring around my collar from coal dust and smoke, I know how you felt. I doubt if many cities there are much cleaner. Thanks for your train videos.
