    what a gracious goal for a moldavite to become so beutiful on earth

  • @MrQuadragon

    Moldavite is an awesome material. One of the lesser theories regarding its formation is that an object (asterioid/comet) collided with the moon around 14 million years ago. The resulting vitrified rock from the impact was cast down to earth in a wide spray, resulting in the large strewn fields on the surface of the earth. More recent theories suggest however, that this extraterrestrial object in fact, hit the earth directly.
    I wish I knew what actually took place, but either way it makes for a great faceted stone. What I found works well for polishing moldavite, is a cerium oxide on a ceramic lap at low speeds. Nice fast polish, and less over-cutting. Cheers.

      There’s a couple of very cool documentaries regarding those topics. There’s another one dealing with our missing planet and how we evaded up with … Mars?(or Venus…?)
      The most interesting part, to me, was that just before watching those documentaries I watched one on Hopi(?) (and several other civilizations) legends, about those issues. Wild world with amazing possibilities. I love that.

    I have some huge Moldavites I inherited from my grandfather, he was a gemologist and master cutter. One is 185 grams and is facet grade with a few fissures of a deep forest green. It is genuine. I also have a 180 gram droplet shaped Top Brown Moldavite, it’s solid gem, no fissures or open bubbles, very few bubbles, it’s amazing. Have a few smaller ones cut into preforms. I am very versed at identifying Moldavite, they have Schlireens And Lechatilirites. Most people don’t believe me but that’s ok.
    I want a pallisite, don’t have one.
    the way the color plays across the Schlireen inclusions is amazing, well done. Cool video

      Moldavite can be easily identified under a loupe. Yes you are correct about Schlireens And Lechatilirites in the gem, that what gives it that unusual look faceted. The pieces you have will be worth a fortune..... Cheers Cliff

    I love moldavites in their rough state, I have multiple jewelry examples in my collection. Very high vibration and very alien feeling. There’s a lot of neat folklore associated with Moldavite. Sliced Pallasite meteorites are so beautiful with their peridot in the iron of the meteorite.

    Hi Cliff, wonderful cut. I loved hearing all about the different gems we can get from outer space or as a result of outer space interacting with the earth. In my own faceting I am learning very much about how you handle a stone can result in over cutting and then having to cheat in facets to get meet points right and I have a very long way to go to master that. So cool to see your Moldivite gem come to life. I believe it will be a very long time before I try my hand at Moldivite. Absolutely gorgeous finished gem and I love the story telling.
    As a side note Oregon Sunstone cuts very fast as well.

    • @VintageTimeGems
      @VintageTimeGems  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Tam...The dreaded over cut. Sometimes you can hit a plane in the gem and it becomes a huge over cut. You learn a lot with the over cut, particularly floating the mast to re cut the facet or polish in the facet.

    If you overcut, it just means you arent accepting the amount of time it takes to alter and create art from a gemstone. Don't rush, keep stopping and looking if you have to. The effort you put in is what you will get, with minor exceptions such as inclusions or cracks you did not notice before.

    usually, a 5.5 on the mohs scale isnt 'very soft' compared to stones like calcite or flourite. but being that moldavite is a natural glass, it probably is a wee bit softer than a gemstone that is a 5.5
