How To Cut Gemstones - Iolite / Water Sapphire
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- Hello. I'm an Australian Gem cutter and I facet gems from all over the world. In this video you will see me facet "Iolite" / "Water Sapphire" from Tanzania. This is my first attempt at faceting this unusual gem. Unfortunately, towards the end, the girdle peeled off due to heat on removal. However, I learnt a lot about the complex nature of faceting this gem. Hopefully, other gem cutters can learn from such a educational video. Standby for future videos. So until next time, take care.

Thanks just preparing to cut iolite. Fortunately I always use epoxy as I once shattered a 100 carat tanzanite while transferring when I used wax. It was the start of my using epoxy.
Good luck with faceting it.
Oh thank you for going all the way with it, even if it fractured at the very end! I love your videos and this just drives the point home that things happen beyond our control and all we can do is learn from them. Your work is inspiring! I am saving up for a faceting machine for myself. I've been wanting to cut gems for a very long time!
Let me know how you go when you begin faceting Todd....Cheers
sorry to be so offtopic but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..?
I somehow lost the password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
@Alvaro Chaim instablaster :)
@Immanuel Kason i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Immanuel Kason it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out !
Well now I’m in the mood to cut some cordierite.
Glad to see a new gem, learn some good info too.
Thanks Iedreams.
Aww shucks...... an Iolite bit Cliff too lol. After my disastrous Iolite faceting attempt a few weeks ago I learned that if your Iolite has any inclusions, make a lovely cabochon with nice rounded edges. I've been cabbing my small pile for about a decade. It holds together well in cabochon form. I still have a 5 gallon bucket full. It came from Connecticut.
The Vikings used Iolites for navigation. It acts as a polarizing filter & allowed the sailors to find the sun behind cloud cover. And newer diesel trucks have this(in the form of cordierite) in the exhaust system to capture carbon.
Keep them coming, Cliff ! And thanks for showing how much of a PITA faceting Iolite is lolol - you helped my ego to recover somewhat after my Iolite faceting fiasco ; ^ )
I have a feeling that Iolite is more suitable for cabbing. Just seems too brittle to have it even set. It has a great colour. If the hardness was greater it would be up there with the best gem material. I will need to give this another try someday. Cheers.
@@VintageTimeGems the most heartbreaking thing about the stone is you gave it a nice fat girdle & it still bit you. These stones don't play nice lol
@@VintageTimeGems One thing you might try with an iolite is a combination stone. Facet the pavilion and cap the top, rounding the girdle into both the pavilion and crown. It would obviously produce a far from ideal gem, but it might end up sturdy enough to be mounted in a piece of jewelry.
You must have taken your chill pill that day with that cool reaction to a chip
Great wk, I’m just starting out in this lapidary trade. And I’m in Love with it. Learning quickly, thank You for all Your Content.
🙏🏽💎✌🏽🔴🎥🎙🌎
Thanks Charles....Faceting is a great interest and hobby.
Lovely gem, I particularly like how the light brings out the different colours. Shame about the fracture - but I'd wear it anyhow ,-)!
Thanks Kathy.
Very very nice
Thanks.
Did not now anything about this special gem Iolite or Water Sapphire before but as a blue person ( i love the color ) and colorshift of the stone it´s wonderful gem and your work is amazing even if sometimes a mistake can happen and without doing them it´s hard to learn! Hugs, Susanne.
thanks for your video. i have about one kilogram of iolite.
I have Iolite too color pale blue 4crt
What a beautiful gem still a great specimen.
Muito linda sua pedra.
Fiquei encantada com a cor.
I like your disk rack, great idea.👌
A few toast tacks a CD holder makes it easy to store the discs and they dry out also.
I read iolite as LOLite, as always great video. Also congrats on 17K
Thanks Goomatora.....
Agreed - Lolite is a more suitable name, since these stones are laughing at me & Cliff ; ^ )
Vary goods work sir.
Thanks.
I love the cabasion (sp- spell check grr) cut for this gem.
It isn't a cabochon, since it is faceted. It is just a standard brilliant cut.
We learn much more from our mistakes and we dont forget as easily. You did a fine job! wonders whether we will see it in a recut further down the track?
Not sure if I will recut. It would be a very small gem, around 4mm I assume.
good job
Love your videos !!! From Greensboro North Carolina, I'm learning from you a lot some times wish you mention the type of disk and the grit you used overall they are fantastic an great learning expereance
Thanks Samuel.
That's interesting because I have chipped the girdle on an Iolite as I was setting it. No you don't want to know the new nicknames for that stone. I had never heard about the problem with their girdles before. Yours looked good up and until the chip.
I'm sure it has many alternative names. Seems that girdles and the brittle nature of this gem is a issue.
@@VintageTimeGems The cleavage is so perfect that even setting the prongs further up on the crown than usual does not eliminate the chipping risk. I suspect that you could put the prongs on the table and some stones would still fracture.
To me, iolite is a display stone, best displayed unmounted.
What a lovely stone with the exception of its brittle properties. Is there any remedial faceting you can do to try to salvage the gem? (Hello from Canada, btw)
I could salvage it, but the gem would be a lot smaller. I'm best to just facet another piece of rough Iolite.
What a shame after all that hard work..I know it takes much longer than the video to cut these beautiful stones, but I guess you know a lot more about them nor ..it is so beautiful too and the depth of colour is gorgeous 😀
Hi Cliff, unlucky with the girdle, but still a wonderful video, and beautiful gemstone.
Hi Ian, Once in a while things like this can happen. It's part of faceting. Cheers
What a bummer, looked like a great stone.
Yes, I think it was a good gem. But that's faceting for you. Cheers
You sound so calm after the stone broke. Had it been me the video would have been demonetized for all the swearing.
Once in a while thing like this happen. It's part of faceting. Often the gem will not play ball.
Dear Vintage Time. My dops have no index pin. I have to eyeball it, vertical, when the dop is in the transfer jig. Can You help?
great stone i have about 4000 cts rough myself maybe i can cut some
Cool gem, I had never heard of it.
Thanks Ross.
Wonderful! You could carve four facits in the hole, line it with gold or silver, and call it the compass stone!
SHKW US HOW TO CUT THIS STONE😍😊👏👏👏
What is the weight of the rough and afyer cut??
I think cushion cut would have give you more yield of the stone.
Do u take apprentices?
Sorry....Not taking on apprentices Bella. If you have a gem club nearby they can teach you.
Vintage Time Thank you all the same. I look forward to learning from your videos. God bless you!
Top top top ❤️❤️
awesome video mate i have always loved Iolite,,,, I'm an aussie prospector and i have a few small pieces of Australian Iolite i would love to get cut if you are interested in cutting some aussie Iolite
A gentleman at my gem club has some Aussie iolite. Iolite in Australia is typically flawed and not as bright in colour. It would make a great gem to cut if clean. Thanks for the offer, but iolite comes with all types of cutting issues. I'd hate to mess up on a piece of rough that someone else owns.....Cheers
Muito bonito seu trabalho.
If this type of stone were to be heat treated would it lose it's color and would it become a harder or softer stone? Thanks, always love watching the progression of each stone you cut.
I would think it would lighten. There is really no need to heat treat Iolite as it has a nice natural color. Thanks for watching....Cheers
🤩 çok güzelllll....
Thank you Hakan.
Shame it chipped, it has an amazing colour. Could you recut the gem to get rid of the chip out?
I could recut it, but it will be tiny.
👍
how cratz of that rough sir? and how cratz has been fisnish gems?
How about a yogo sapphire from Montana?
Love to facet a Sapphire from Montana one day...Cheers
What does a vail in the stone mean?
A veil is a term used when bright light reveals a thin white opaque flaw running internally in the gem. In the case of this gem, under normal light it is impossible to see.
Does he use the grindings?
No. My pot plants like them.
Uau lindo demais Parabéns super joinha
Too bad it is so brittle, it is a beautiful gem.
who ever did the 2 dislikes have no souls
Ficou bonita
what do you do with the bucket of run off water after your cut a gem?
I water the plants with it.
Where do you get the protractor equipment? I don't know what to search for. I have seen them on wish or something cheap from China, but I wonder how they hold up. Is what you use a facetron?
The protractor is built onto the machine. I use a Australian machine called a Facetstar.
No, the Facetron has a dial indicator calibrated in 0.1 degree increments.
I am as disappointed as you are about the unfortunate fracture after all of your hard work. The stone's color was so pretty. But as you said, you learned something from the experience. Is there any way to salvage it in a setting?
I can recut it, but it will be smaller.
Do you do this for fun or professionally? Who do you sell the cut jewels to?
I facet gems for enjoyment.
It’s wrong way cut it blue foun anther side
I think I'm more disappointed than you are about the outcome.
The fracture is a pity especially as the gem has such a beautifully intense color.
I have a 1.00ct Iolite that is bluish-gray. I'm guessing the table is not along the optimal axis for color.
Viewing from the side shows a deeper blue.
💓💓🤗💎🤗💎❤️💎
I cri
bugger
Very nice video, Cliff. Like most cutters, I was sick to see the girdle fracture.
Thanks for sharing your work.
I love Iolite! It has such a striking hue of blue! Shame on that beautiful stone for giving you fits!😉 Thanks for letting us watch your fantastic work!💎❤👏
Thanks Mary Lou.
@@VintageTimeGems You're welcome. 🙂
I enjoy all your videos as I'm new to faceting you're a great teacher thank you
It's still a nice stone even with the chip. Polish the chip out and cover that with a unique prong, or recut it into a triangle or something.
Better than what, don't think Tim would agree with you on whats better, sapphire or tanzinite. Mind you do know your stuff pity it chipped but a learning experience 🏴💎😁🏴💎
Aussie Sapphire is cherry picked. The really good stuff never sees the light of day. Ask Tim?
love from india where would i get this machine ?
It looks like Tanzanite its very beaut
I love you Vintage Time. I have lots of stress and anxiety, and watching your videos are mellow-making. Kudos.
This make me so happy that my videos calm and relaxes people.Cheers Robert, take care mate.
What kind of machine is this?
What machine would you recommend for a beginner.
A facetron.
Very informative :)
Great video, I always learn something from your videos.
Thank you Cliff and Jaws.
Thanks Tam.
Beautiful
That was a treat! Thank you for the video.
That is disappointing that the stone cracked; it was beautiful! How do you know when to stop grinding? Does your machine have a setting, or do you do it by eye?
I facet by eye and sound,
Machines have a mechanical stop that can be used for rough cutting and the angle scale is calibrated for when the quill is resting on the stop. Once you are close, it is as Cliff said, it is cut a little, look, cut a bit more, look - continue until satisfied. You do the final facet adjustment during polishing.
I cried
If it was a $1000 Sapphire I'd cry and be very annoyed. It's good to learn about faceting such gems.
@@VintageTimeGemsI understand, still a beautiful stone and a lot of work.
