- Final Fantasy for the NES was my first real RPG, I played it as a child and loved it to death, over the course of years I've beaten it many times with a variety of parties.
Our final and most difficult challenge is the Thief, he's not good at anything. He requires the most grinding of any solo run, and I hate him... But I'm showing this off for you, the viewer, enjoy, if you can!

New? I do Let's Play videos, gameplay with commentary about the game being played. Release schedule of one episode per series per day. I'm not exactly a completionist, but I like to show off as much from each game as I can and explore all a game has to offer. I tend to prefer Strategy and RPG, although you'll find a variety of other genres as well.
Dot be so hard on him Blue!He does steal! He steals the most important thing in the game!He steals valuable slot for better characters in the party! :D
+Malisa1990 He also steals a good portion of your life to spending time grinding his levels ;)
Malisa1990 This comment deserves far more thumbs up than I can give.
All hail Sir Suck, imp slayer extraordinaire!
Seriously, Blue, I had no idea the solo thief run would be this time-consuming.
+Michael Matthews He's a big under performer, I'm just glad I started this challenge on super speed and with a save state I'd grinded out in the background already ;)
This video has the best thumbnail! It does not have the best protagonist...
I started a run of four thieves recently. Four of them are bad enough. I can't imagine one.
All in all this first episode was super productive.
Time for the next 5 episodes to be all banging your head against Astos?
+NoNameYooTube Well, if we hadn't had a cut, the next 20 episodes would have been fighting ogres and sharks, so we're already way ahead ;)
My friend bought me this game off another friend and I played it several times through as a kid. I never had a SNES or Sega Genesis so my NES was always my go-to for gaming. I never tried a solo challenge though; I always had 3 fighters and one white mage.
I love that thumbnail :)
+Kiwi Gaming I'm glad to hear people noticed that :)
I searched i got it. Thanks you badass
I never did solo thief, but i did a 4 thieves run, it was a struggle until they all turned into ninjas and could all caste haste on themselves and they pretty much owned the game after that. I also did a 4 BB run which owned really hard too. The game is great but the classes are so imbalanced. The 4 fighters run was absolutely broken. There's really no reason to not play as 4 fighters in this game. As a kid i just really wanted to use magic so I'd always use a black and white mage, but the magic just isn't good enough to rationalize having squish characters.
To balance, the thief needs a steal function, maybe even be able to steal from shops. BB would need better evasion, All white and black spells would need to be 50% more powerful.
Other than the thief I think they're actually balanced pretty well. BB sucks unless you grind him, but often times a balanced party (say Fig/RM/WM/BM) can clear the entire game at a level where the BB was still mostly useless. But it gives BB the edge if you're more interested in grinding xp than diving dungeons for gear.
Mages are super useful, the only way to revive outside of towns is WM, makes the final dungeons considerably safer having Lif2/Cur4 for emergencies. BM is notable for sweeper spells, saves you a TON of resources and time by wiping out an entire enemy group in 1 or 2 turns rather than chipping away 1 at a time with Fig/BB. RM is more early game specialist, kind of opposite the BB, starts incredibly powerful with access to great weapons/armor/spells, and only drops off later when he can't equip the best gear or learn the best spells. Solo RM is honestly easier than pretty much any other run, should get through it quicker than a solo fighter by a little, only struggling a bit with the endgame bosses.
Hi! I haven't... Been here for a while. In any case, a good video, and can't wait to see the rest of the series.
+Graham Rich Fortunately I haven't gone anywhere and the videos keep rolling out ;)
BlueAnkylo I see that. And I commend you for that unending video stream that you seam to have.
4:45 My poor boy with blue hair! He is great at many things! Like attracting punches to the face. Space holding a vital character slot role. Death and dying! He excels at! Biting through items and functioning as a mule.
He's definitely the best at dying of the 6 classes
Now this playlist is my sleep aid and alarm clock once I set the playlist to repeat, lol :D
Very entertaining , Thank you so much for making this!
It really does suck that the thief is the worst character. The Sprite for the FF1 thief is my favorite compared to the peter pan-looking versions in later games
To be honest I've always thought it looks like he's wearing pajamas... but maybe that's just me.
No wonder I didn't get notified, I didn't turn on notifications somehow. Oh well, I got them turned on now. :D
05:10-05:21, so hilarious, lol.
Damn. Thief doesn't even have the Steal ability in this version, does he? Then again with all the other bugs who knows, maybe that doesn't work either, really screwing him over...
Thieves didn't get the ability to steal until FF3 actually. ;)
Huzzah! Another good thing FF3 did despite 90% of the fanbase hating it to death! Though I gotta admit there is certainly flaws, tho still love the DS version to death.
@@gratuitouslurking8610 the famicon ff3 is great, isnt the American one called mystic quest? Yeah I heard it sucked because Japan thought America was too stupid to understand jRPG's so it would be way to simplistic like having only 3 or 4 weapon types with 3 weapons in each, and then party members being stronger than the main hero.
@@theofficialchannelofoffici7962 At the very least FF3/6 are swapped for some reason in the states at the time. I'm unsure if this is because Mystic Quest or just FF released odd over here.
The only fight I've ever won at the Power Peninsula with a solo Thief at this point of the game, is a fight against a single Zombull. 2 giants may be slightly possible with a lot of luck, but yeah, 99.9% of the time you're gonna die.
-Tyro hits too hard, has around 450-500hp
-Frost wolves use frost, and you have no ribbon, so damage piles up
-Giants hit hard, have around 250hp, and have decent defense
-Wyvern (1 in 64 I think) have a lot of evasion I think, and can poison you
-Zombulls in groups, sometimes with trolls, hit hard, trolls have multiple hits, Zombulls have around 200-250hp, and the trolls have around 150-170hp
Thief may have a lot of health, but poor defense and lack of offense make him easy to take out.
You can probably get a small enough group of Frost Wolves to win one as a thief.... but they usually come in too large a group. With enough crazy luck on crits I'm sure 1 or 2 zombulls would be theoretically possible....
But yeah overall I don't think it's worth the time trying to grind it out on the power peninsula as a thief, it'll be faster overall to just get the guaranteed xp from easier enemies unfortunately.
Yeah that's definitely true, unless you get ridiculously lucky on the RNG against 3-4 Zombulls or giants, which might as well be impossible, lol.
The thief actually gets a hell of a lot better as a Ninja.
Yup, once you finally promote him he's basically a discount fighter with a few nice black magic spells.
@@BlueAnkylo I've used tons of character combos over the years playing FF1 (I'm 38 and got it for Christmas when it came out way back in 1990. Lol). When I'm playing for fun I find I prefer
2 Fighters
1 Black Belt
1 White Mage
The Silver Sword you get in the Elf Town around level 6 is OP as fuckall and the Black Belts only get better with age (plus they cost almost 0 gold to maintain). The White Mage is helpful early on against Zombies and in the late game against War Mech and Chaos (I usually just have them use the Heal Staff every battle round when I get it in the Dragon Castle.)
Do you have a favorite team combo when you play for fun?
@@iamthem.a.n.middleagednerd1053 My classic favourite was Fig/BB/WM/BM for "balance" as recommended in the old guide book. So that's probably my most played party, although I'd usually say Fig/Fig/WM/BM is the superior party overall. Sorry BB you just take too long to grind up to Goku tier.
WM is awesome with mage staff/thors hammer type stuff just spamming light AoE's and saving them for Life spells and Cure 4's, they don't contribute a whole lot most of the time, but when you need one, you really need one.
is it just me or did the video cut while he was talking at the power peninsula.
+jrab09 (Riddle) Yeah, call me a bit lazy ;) All I did for these videos was take a 4 or 5 hour raw video file from the stream and chop it into 30 minute episodes, sometimes the cuts are magnificent, sometimes just a little confusing.
+BlueAnkylo No worries just wanted to make sure it wasnt youtube that was cutting it off... this was actually a 15min video for me since I play it at 2x speed :P
Jesus christ! so many dead thieves lol, I think blue is trying to tell us something.
At least when he gets to Ninja he will be a huge improvement, getting there sounds like it will be..."Fun" :P
LOL only good at running away from the cops...poor Jose.
+Xeniv No no, no hidden message at all, Thieves are totally legit for solo runs ;)
cool stream. I'd like to see a let's play for dragon warrior 4. as much of an expert you are on ff1, I consider myself on dq4. do nes version.
I've played a fair bit of the older DQ games, I remember usually getting really bogged down and quitting for the last boss/dungeon most of the time though, so I'd need to be really excited to plan out a LP of one.
The first three were level grinders the 4th one is less so. Considered the best in there series.
@@jasont7788 5 and 8 are generally considered the fan favorites
Yeah thank goodness for ridiculous speed, otherwise this would be complete utter maddening chaos! xD
Yeah that seemed to be a glitch, because not killing even a single pirate before you die? Yeah, that's happened to me before as a solo white Mage with imps, but it's very rare to happen.
Wow! Got back to Corneria with 1hp left and with poison. Thief is awesome like that, but that's it, lol.
Yeah that's fine as far as cutting out 10 hours of stream goes, because trying to get up to level 24 or 25 like that is just boredom!
+MountainD18 I didn't think anyone would mind that much ;) I really just watched another monitor and held left/right and auto attack A for the most part for a very long time.
where's the lvl 99 at beginning of game off imps challenge? :P
Thief is broken, his ability to run is actually broken and he dosnt gain a bonus for running.
Yeah running is just broken in general without a romhack to fix it.
Technically his luck stat increases do effect his running chances, it's just not comparing it against the correct stat (character level), in slot 1 it compares his luck to the character in slot 3's "status byte" which is actually great if they're normal, but I don't know know the value for death state.
Since it's related, a thief in lead position DOES actually use his agility & luck to effect the parties odds of preemptive strikes and avoiding ambushes, so in the end that's really the only advantage he has at all in a solo run.
all because thieves sucked azz in d&d lolol. jrpg's are actually what helped improve thieves/rogues. fun fact
The thief is so ungodly bad....by every definition of the word, he would be considered a 'waif'.
Yup, one of the earliest examples I can think of for taking a terrible character in hopes of them being good one day in an advanced class. It's a lot like Dragon Quest III's Goof Off.
Time to do the pixel remaster
So for you, as long as you stream, White Mage and Suck do good with 1hp left, lol.
Also, your commentary is very refreshing, no profanity, the occasional slight rage, but not like your average gamer, and you definitely keep cool. I'm not sure how you do it, as I rage like Michael from RoosterTeeth, lol.
I've got quite a few years of practice lp'ing by now, so it comes pretty naturally. I just decided I was going to keep the language on my channel around PG and stuck to it.
This segment took 109 hour's
They really should have put a steal command for suck maybe have some rare weapons armor items you can steal I Kno they put alot already into an 8 bit cartridge but damn
Would have been nice yeah
Should I try this I don't have speed up though
I mean, if you've got a lot of time to kill, but no, playing on original hardware with no speed up or save states, this is a challenge you would be crazy to complete.
@@BlueAnkylo call me crazy I started it I'm just gonna do it on my down time im also playing mass effect on PS4 . I thought the thief could use the short sword I got all excited. Dam
Thief vs war meck
Warmech wins 1 shot. Easy.
@@BlueAnkylo maybe RNG will be on the Thief's side lol
How is it that when sleeping at the inn he doesn’t revive the whole team?
Thief has no interest in sharing his spoils with his compatriots and therefore makes no effort to heal them.
Sleeping only replenishes HP. Options for reviving team members: 1) paying priest at church, 2) using Phoenix Down, 3) using Life2 (white magic spell).
Because RPGs from the 80s didn't baby the player.
not fer me
