ProJared thanks for the video. You won't believe it but I actually started playing through FF this morning for the first time and it's great. Busy grinding so I can get that crown! I wanted to ask, do you think the version on the recently released Baby NES (the small arcade one) will have the same glitches and issues? I know the Baby NES has the original but maybe it was patched unlike the cartridge version?
The ProJared! :D Hey, I think you should consider playing that Dawn of Souls edition at some point. I like it the most because it still has that great 8-to-16 bit atmosphere, but it also throws in the very interesting bonus content. Of course, it does still lack the options that allowed you to make the Origins version closer to the original game. If I ever learn to hack Dawn of Souls, I am going to make an edition that allows a multitude of options for fine tuning the game in regards to elements from the preceding versions, even including an option to turn off the auto-target. I am one of those few people who just really, really likes that old school magic system with the simple spell stocks instead of an MP pool.
If you decide to play this game buy the strategy guide. It's not just a guide, but narrates and sets the scene for each chapter with epic images and foreshadowing intros.

Well, it sorta could.... Your weapons were limited to things like the hammers until Masamune. You could use them for their black magic spells. I personally did it with White Wizzards myself, but it sucked hard.
I have done the white mage challenge and once you start accumulating items to cast spells it becomes a lot easier. Not like you should ever die with all of that healing magic. The beginning is rough though. I was able to make it to the final dungeon without a single death and keep my party's XP even just the way Jared likes it.

I'm sure he will be keeping up the great work, since, y'know, he literally foreshadowed covering the other FF games. I personally hope you aren't doing them all sequentially but rather are cherry picking the ones that are important to you or doing some order other than chronological.
I have the perfect way to do the “Four trinkets of the elements” running gag in this context. “Gee, an RPG where you collect four treasures representing the elements? I doubt we’ll ever see that again...” and then you hold up all the ones you made the joke with. Brings the joke full circle
I would've done it like this: *Jared plays himself as a little kid with "circa 1987/1990" on the screen and enthusiasticly says* "Gee! An epic RPG where you have to collect four treasures of the elements! I've never heard of that before!"
Pffff! I soloed this with 1 naked white mage without nintendo power or parents while running 12 miles to school in 8 ft of snow every day, having TWO jobs 50 miles apart without a car on top of doing the chores in the abandoned house I was left in.
It's not as bad as doing 4 Thieves in this game. The White Mage's healing puts their effective health high enough to be able to win every fight, the fights just take FOREVER. Thieves, on the other hand, just suck. They are just sucky Fighters - they can't upgrade their equipment anywhere near as frequently, their stats are abysmal and their promotion to Ninja is just awful (low level black magic at the end of the game is pointless, whereas the low level white magic on the Knight is still worthwhile).
The thief is actually supposed to be a light blonde or in this case a halfling and the Fighter is actually a light brunette while the white mage a red head
I hope you make a return to final fantasy videos, I would love to see your take on Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, 9 and tactics advance (my personal favourites)
I'm like Jared, but with FFIV instead of the original. FFIV (FF2 US) was my intro into the RPG market, and was it ever a good one. That opening airship crawl as the Red Wings left Mysidia, your trek through Mist cave, fighting Mist Dragon, getting Tellah, fighting Octomammoth, going up Mt. Hobs, becoming a paladin, etc. Every single bit of the game is imprinted on me. It's easily the one FF game I've played and beaten the most, and I love it to death. It sits up top amongst my favourite RPGs of all time.
I like the 3DS version because it changes enough of the game to make it feel fresh, while retaining a lot of what makes it memorable. it also has a much cleaner script and translation than the SNES version.
I think I had this for Gameboy Advance (they change the names around so much). I loved it a lot, and no other Final Fantasy has got close for me. The full 3d ones in particular feel like entirely different games.
Hey Jared, just wanted to let you know I support you. Not your biggest fan, though I've always enjoyed your videos, but I was horrified at how you were publicly brutalized. I hope you get through it all
@@cdfactory Nobody was "horrified" when Jared got cancelled. You jumped on board, I jumped on board, and there's no doubt in my mind that OP jumped on board as well. It happened.
Final Fantasy was my first contact with "Nintendo hard". In the journey from the second to third town, I went ahead and skipped grinding, hoping to power through and do it once I have more equipment and spells to choose from. Boy, was I ever wrong. I came across these enemies called Arachnids which were much higher leveled than the other enemies and poison you...when you're far away from town. I had one antidote for the white mage so he could survive and cast Poisona or Esuna or whatever it was called on the rest of the party. He died first. Everyone succumbed to the poison on the trek back except for the fighter, who survived thanks to his high HP and a little help from RNJesus (poisoned only in the final stretch). He managed to drag himself to the temple only to find that the party didn't have enough gp for a single resurrection. He went back, dragging the corpses of his fallen companions all the way, to fight imps and wolves. It was tedious, time consuming, and there was a large level gap that irked me for a while... but hell if I was going to be under-prepared for those 8-legged bastards this time!
Elfland is the biggest difficulty spike in the game, second is ice cave third I'd probably say temple of fiends revisited. My tip is using the classic Kyzoku trick to buy a ton of potions really, you can also use a similar encounter table manip to fight tons of giants in front of the elf town for XP, if you have a black mage, get him LIT2 at level 5, deals more damage o the mages of tge marsh cave thsn FIR2, though not as useful for peninsula of power grinding.
MechanicalPasta He's played Awakening at least. Also maybe Fates. It'd be cool if he did a video on one of the older games since the 3ds games (not Shadows though) are kind of simplistic.
The 3DS games are not simplistic. They are rather flat in terms of plot and world building, but they are far from simple. The GBA games were way simpler in game play and design, not that it's a bad thing.
MechanicalPasta Apart from Pair Up and the incredibly simple skill system it's very similar in terms of complexity to the GBA games. I was referring more towards the Tellius or SNES games.
Well everything's simple in comparison to FE4 and 5, but still, I think that something's simplicity doesn't have to be relative. Objectively, every FE has a good bit of depth to it
its in every version because its not a glitch just a developer oversight because there are borders in the overworld that decide which enemies spawn there and the penninsula of power is two blocks of overworld that are high enough to get into an enemy zone on the continent above it.
@@theccarbiter I actually think it's kind of intended though, considering Final Fantasy 2 has a very extremely similar 'issue' with Mysidia at the start of the game. Methinks maybe the developers thought it was cool at the time. After-all this is when Square was still incredibly small.
He's been livestreaming playing FFII and FFIII (and uploading gameplay on his ProJared Plays channel), so I'm guessing we'll see new Final Fantasy videos in the coming months. Can't wait! :D
Dana Walton LMAO yeah, there's that and the Knight casts white magic and the red mage/wizard can get the most varied array of top tier gear (not sure what is their exclusive gear, though)
ninja is def the 3rd best char in the game...only reason hes 3rd is as a theif he weighs you down and due to a bug his 1 strength the ability to run away is bugged...though in every remake the theif has very close to 100% to run while the rest fail very often which is very annoying in the ice cave where everything 1 shots you...
this game honestly does hold up so well. i first played it on an emulator because of 8 bit theatre when that was a thing, and it blew me away with how good it was that i instantly became a ff fan. ive played the gba remake several times because of how customizable it is and honestly its easily one of the top 5 ff games.
Emulating the nes version is great. Save states for the tedious parts. Maybe edit some characters enabling cheats to just make them more fun. Level grind and buy potions in 300% speed to get things done.
Yeah, and it's one of those games (other is FFVI) where a bugged version is fine because there's builds made around figuring out what spells and statuses do not work, and which work too well. Personally, I liked PS1 of all re-releases, it kept old D&D charge-based magic system but updated graphics and sound. IIRC, PSP-onwards versions had mana system until Pixel Remaster.
The reasons you love this game overlap a lot with why I love Fire Emblem. Seeing what stats go up, promoting to stronger and better characters, etc. Both Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem have around 15 games in their main series too.
One problem I have always had with RPGs as a whole is the whole is the way most of them do random encounters. Games like EarthBound do it the best, where you can always see the enemies on the overworld and choose to fight or evade them, and if you're at a high enough level, weak enemies run in fear from you. Keeps you from having to fight the same level 5 rats over and over again, and also really makes you feel powerful. But then, there are games where large portions of the journey consist of "How far can I make it before another Sandshrew trips me up?" You know, like caves in Pokemon, with their infinite amounts of meaningless Digletts and Zubats. There was a part in Octopath Traveler in a cave where I felt like I couldn't move five steps without another herd of rats swarming around me. I personally don't understand why most RPGs haven't converted to the EarthBound system, because if I don't WANT to fight another Pidgey, then I don't HAVE to.
Well, one, they're crap to program, two, some games just work better with random battles really, couldn't see final fantasy 1 without them, though some games had an easy time converting (Lunar series)
So Pokémon specifically had this item called Repel that is super inexpensive and makes it impossible to run into Pokémon of a lower level than your party’s lead for a certain amount of steps. In the original game, this item is first available in Pewter City, right before your first cave dungeon. So Pokémon *had* a way to avoid those battles. They even had an NPC in a garden right near the Pewter City entrance who would talk about Repel to you.
I've always, and I thought weirdly, loved the ineffective-efficient combat system of FFI. It made the combat a bit more strategic for this more primitive system. I still love the playing this version to this day.
Except thanks to the bugged Intelligence stat and the many non-working spells Red Mages end up better than the Black Mage, and arguably the White Mage.
white mage is prob the worst char in the game..with a broken int stat they wont heal more then red mage, their attack power is garbage, and any protection spell becomes useless when you finally get the ribbon item which turns on all protections you ever need..theres a reason why 4x white mage is the hardest run in the game...even 4x black mage has an easier time and 4x red mage crushes the game.. and ya black mage is prob the 2nd worst for not being able to cast white magic and doing less damage then red and having the lowest hp for no real reason... red mage is so broken in the nes original with int being broken and him having amazing equips..both spells up to the lv that matters, can cast exit, revive, and do slightly less damage then a ninja (shows how good he is) and he has the highest hp of the mage class and you got your best mage in the game...hes flat out nerfed in every remake and even then hes still really good...though once the int stat is fixed white/black mage finally become good picks again..
So it’s been over a year since I watched this video, but because this was my first ever ProJared video, I thought it only right that I come back and comment. After watching hundreds of hours of content and joining Twitch just to be able to see him live, I must say that I cannot recommend his channels enough.
@Fozzy W he farmed in astos castle, on the spiked square with mummies, then he farmed on zombie dragons in the castle of ordeal. He also got really lucky.
I don't normally comment on here, but I wanted you to know how much I liked this video. You brought us into your world of how you view Final Fantasy, and as someone who has only ever played X on PS2, I really want to go back and play some of the others now. I'm not even much of an RPG player. I really appreciate the way you showed off the nostalgic and sentimental value of the game, but still gave it a fair review and led other people who haven't played it to making up their own minds of what to think of it. Thanks, Jared.
Ok, I HAVE to see your video on Final Fantasy II now, even if that's the only other one you do (or if you then round it out with FFIII and close out the original trilogy). I just want your classic bewilderment at how ridiculous FFII is. Especially after watching your streams on it! Hoo, what a game that was.
He played all of 2 on Twitch, and is doing an LP of 3 on his ProJared Plays! channel. He also did an LP of the original, which is where all the footage for this review came from.
I've been playing the original Famicom version of 2. It's leagues better than the GBA version Jared played on stream. Dungeon design is still awful, and it's still practically impossible to properly level temporary party members, but most of Jared's other complaints are basically not present. It would actually be a disservice to the game for Jared to review it without playing the original, which we all know is never gonna happen. Not a great game, but I'm enjoying it more than 8 or 12.
Jared did make a joking comment in his "Top 10 Worst Things FF Has Ever Done" that FF2 is one of the worst games in the series, with FF8 and FF13, while using footage of the Famicom version. Dunno if he'll use that version if he ever reviews it though. I say it's still fair to do the PS1 or GBA versions.
For the running gag: "Gee, an epic RPG where you gotta collect 4 treasures of the elements? I've never heard that one before" *Holds up Final Fantasy* "Wait... I haven't heard that one before"
That picture of Joof at the beginning actually killed me lmao Anyway, I never had the chance to play or even really see anything from FF1 until now, and it's awesome seeing the origin of a game series that largely impacted my life as well, in fact my username was inspired by the Final Fantasy franchise, haha. Also that thing where the sprites get updated is great, I wish more games did that, and let you feel the progress you're making in such a tangible way. You totally nailed everything about game feel in this; there's such subtle touches in the design of everything from combat speed, to building up your characters, and opening up the world for yourself by choosing to do certain tasks instead of following a set path that I can see would make for such a satisfying experience. I wish more modern game makers would re-examine those aspects, because I feel like not many games are able to give you the real sense that you've gone on an adventure anymore, and I think it really comes down to those basics and giving them their proper dues. Anyway thanks for sharing not only this great classic with us but also some of your fond memories and inspirations! ^v^
Loved all the Final Fantasy 9 music in this video. I especially noticed it when you started talking about the Black Mage design. I got a little giddy at that very subtle nod to the best black mage ever, Vivi Ornitier.
Commenting here to say I have beaten the PSP port of Final Fantasy 1. Party was a Monk, Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage; lots of spells to cover buffs and heals and specialized-damage-spells, and the Monk is very buff-friendly. The game really was a smooth ride for me, as I managed through with minimal grind (only a few passes at the Peninsula Of Power for spell-level access for a total time of 1-2 hours out of the 24 total spent just playing to wherever I felt like going) and eventually more money than I knew what to do with. I did dabble a bit into the bonus content before knocking down the final boss, but still have much of it to do with maybe the same party or a different party. I have no experience exactly with the NES original or the PS1 version that did some fixes to the bugged parts, but I definitely still feel that this is one of the strong entries of the franchise, in consideration that this is the first Final Fantasy.
@@FrostGlader Not sure if you've seen it yet, but if not then you should* *it's good but has extremely gruesome moments, such as an on screen half decapitation. It''s less gruesome after the first season.

You know... the Theme of Final Fantasy _here_ sounds the most like a beginning. And the one used in the credits of Endwalker... sounds the most like an ending. Seriously, Endwalker's rendition of this theme actually made me tear up.
What's the differences between all versions? I played only the NES one where you need to buy LOTS of pure potions if you want to stay alive in a dungeon.
I recently was given the Classic NES for my birthday, and I started playing Final Fantasy but have been struggling with the very beginning with my guys leveling so slowly and not giving huge attacks. Watching this has helped me realize the error of my ways (I hadn't bought any weapons or spells lol). And now I am determined to get through this game. Thanks for the fun video!
1:21 Was that... an 8-bit Theater reference? I don't like the idea of commenting on a half a year old video, but I just couldn't let that slide, you clever person you!
Something interesting I noticed on the original NES version: I have never run into Warmech unless I had a Ninja in my party I have never NOT run into Warmech if there was a Ninja in my party
Here's a tip to get warmech in the NES version Save in front of the mirage tower. Power off the console and back on, this will reset the encounter table to 0. Climb up the tower, count how many encounters you got, has to bee less than 20. When you get up there, the 20th emcounter will be warmech. Now here's a challeemge for the crazy ones, warmech is the second rarest enemy on the brudge, the rarest formation there is a group of fighters, they'll e the 129th encounter from a power off, have fun hunting them!
Hey found a glitch in Final Fantasy 1 for NES years ago.. anytime you take the SHIP into a harbor walk into the town.. go to the INN spend the night.. hold reset and turn power off.. turn the game back on now leave the INN.. leave the village get on your SHIP and after sailing a short distance.. a random encounter will flash the screen. In most roms or original carts of the game for the NES.. the random enemy will ALWAYS be "Kyzokus" (but on some carts it is a shark every time lol)which are similar to the pirates you fought in the town you got the SHIP! they are useful for raising GP in short amounts of time but not much else. Still a neat bug i wanted to share.
I've recently gotten into Final Fantasy, decided to start from the beginning in fact, and I must say the Theme actually made me nostalgic somehow, for a series I had never played, I've heard the Theme a few times and somehow the knowledge of just how significant it was to everyone made it the same for me, giving me an in on that collective energy the fandom has for the franchise.

Same here. The 3D version is gross, though. I still played it, anyway.
I like the 3DS version because it changes enough of the game to make it feel fresh, while retaining a lot of what makes it memorable. it also has a much cleaner script and translation than the SNES version.
To each his own I guess.
FFIV was my first RPG. the whole starting as a dark knight really stuck with me
I think I had this for Gameboy Advance (they change the names around so much).

Doge Archon h
Elfland is the biggest difficulty spike in the game, second is ice cave third I'd probably say temple of fiends revisited.
My tip is using the classic Kyzoku trick to buy a ton of potions really, you can also use a similar encounter table manip to fight tons of giants in front of the elf town for XP, if you have a black mage, get him LIT2 at level 5, deals more damage o the mages of tge marsh cave thsn FIR2, though not as useful for peninsula of power grinding.
My mom bought this precious game for me when I was about 10 years old. I LOVED IT.
I'm 46 now. Still love it.

Hows that
Tim Hook his channel was at around 740K the other day. Now it’s up by almost 100K in the last day.
DaFro3713 yeah but how are they helping.
It's suggesting me his vids outta nowhere, I think you're right.
But like whyyy
The level up and class promotion is a major reason why I love Fire Emblem. If you like these mechanics, give FE a shot
Objectively, every FE has a good bit of depth to it
I actually tried to play Fire Emblem, but just couldn't get into it.
Fun fact: the "pennesula of power" glitch is still a thing in the Dawn of Souls GBA port
tEhCniCallY that's an exploit not a glitch
its in every version because its not a glitch just a developer oversight because there are borders in the overworld that decide which enemies spawn there and the penninsula of power is two blocks of overworld that are high enough to get into an enemy zone on the continent above it.
@@theccarbiter I actually think it's kind of intended though, considering Final Fantasy 2 has a very extremely similar 'issue' with Mysidia at the start of the game. Methinks maybe the developers thought it was cool at the time. After-all this is when Square was still incredibly small.
@@theccarbiter if the video I watched comparing all the different versions of FF1 is correct, they actually "fixed" it in the pixel remaster version.
allthelonely that’s dumb considering it’s been in every version before it
The aging of the characters is one of my fav things about the game. I wish they would do that with some more of the games
This is a classic RPG. I still love how simple it all was. And those themes are still so amazing

Dana Walton LMAO yeah, there's that
and the Knight casts white magic
and the red mage/wizard can get the most varied array of top tier gear (not sure what is their exclusive gear, though)
Yep and it instantly buffs him up. Why?
BECAUSE FAST. Gotta go fast as they say
ninja is def the 3rd best char in the game...only reason hes 3rd is as a theif he weighs you down and due to a bug his 1 strength the ability to run away is bugged...though in every remake the theif has very close to 100% to run while the rest fail very often which is very annoying in the ice cave where everything 1 shots you...
Your characters must be pretty weak if you struggle in the Ice cave. That's what AICE is for, just spam that using your white mage.
ice damage is bad but I really think the problem might just be instakills attacks
this game honestly does hold up so well. i first played it on an emulator because of 8 bit theatre when that was a thing, and it blew me away with how good it was that i instantly became a ff fan. ive played the gba remake several times because of how customizable it is and honestly its easily one of the top 5 ff games.
Emulating the nes version is great. Save states for the tedious parts. Maybe edit some characters enabling cheats to just make them more fun. Level grind and buy potions in 300% speed to get things done.
@@jc.1191 nah you just need to know about the buggy spot with all the ice wolves that will gain you like 10 levels if you have a black mage

Ive watched nearly everything you have put out, but now im bing watching as much of it as I can
Even after all these years, still love that 8-Bit Theater reference.
My god, 8-Bit Theater! I haven't read that name in a long time
One problem I have always had with RPGs as a whole is the whole is the way most of them do random encounters.
Dragon Quest 9 does that too.
Chrono Trigger is another game that did it, it is even a Suaresoft game, so yeah wonder why it didn't stay.
Yay I'm not the only one rewatching these classics
I love you Jared
Yeah the Black Mage is great I guess but can they cast both white AND dark magic?
Red Mage they don't have that dope hat either.
Red Mage To quote Brentalfloss, "A Jack-of-all-Trades but the Master of zero!"
Except thanks to the bugged Intelligence stat and the many non-working spells Red Mages end up better than the Black Mage, and arguably the White Mage.
Red mage
white mage is prob the worst char in the game..with a broken int stat they wont heal more then red mage, their attack power is garbage, and any protection spell becomes useless when you finally get the ribbon item which turns on all protections you ever need..theres a reason why 4x white mage is the hardest run in the game...even 4x black mage has an easier time and 4x red mage crushes the game..
and ya black mage is prob the 2nd worst for not being able to cast white magic and doing less damage then red and having the lowest hp for no real reason...
red mage is so broken in the nes original with int being broken and him having amazing equips..both spells up to the lv that matters, can cast exit, revive, and do slightly less damage then a ninja (shows how good he is) and he has the highest hp of the mage class and you got your best mage in the game...hes flat out nerfed in every remake and even then hes still really good...though once the int stat is fixed white/black mage finally become good picks again..
So it’s been over a year since I watched this video, but because this was my first ever ProJared video, I thought it only right that I come back and comment.
Linneus Tbh FF2 is the easiest game in the series if you use any non-death insta death spell, as they work on most bosses.
Yes, hence why I said "Especially after watching your streams on it".

Anyway, I never had the chance to play or even really see anything from FF1 until now, and it's awesome seeing the origin of a game series that largely impacted my life as well, in fact my username was inspired by the Final Fantasy franchise, haha.

Something interesting I noticed on the original NES version:
I have never run into Warmech unless I had a Ninja in my party
I have never NOT run into Warmech if there was a Ninja in my party
@Manek Iridius I went warmech hunting because I am an idiot.
Ive got him without a ninja. He's very random.
Here's a tip to get warmech in the NES version
Save in front of the mirage tower.
That could've been useful in his play through of the game when he was constantly hoping to run into them at sea to acquire money.
