If he wanted no one to leave, but still have a functional city, he should have just made the highway connection a one way road. All the roads inside the city could have been two ways.

It'd be fun to have each loop of the spiral feed back into the one-way tunnel entrance to the city - that way people can still not leave the city, and can only go in one direction, but they can "reset" to the beginning.
Why doesn't this have much more likes!? This is a much better and more fun idea than to just have the entrance road as a one-way road and to have everything else as a two-way road!

Mat, as a highway engineer, you talk about the expence with bridges and stuff.
And since bridges dosent give room for zoning, the bridge over the highway is useless and could be put closer to the houses on the ground :)

This channel has made me addicted to City Skylines. I'd start playing and FIVE HOURS LATER, I'm trying to force myself to stop. I haven't played in 2 weeks because once I get a taste, I'll get hooked again.

To make it function better while still not allowing people to leave, you could've made one way roads that would go back to the center. That would make the shops available while still preserving the dungeon-esque theme
@Real_Civil_Engineer I got some good idea, how about you built a unique city made of bridge with three different city levels. You can use the landscape modifying to make a mountain for building towns and connect them with lots of bridges. That should be a challenge for you. X)

It might be interesting to make a version of this that does work. 2 crossing highways and the one way spiral. On and off ramps each time the highway meets the road. Keeps traffic flowing well on the spiral but allows for services and people to get where they need to go. Hell, maybe a subway that is offset from the highway.
Edit: that would be an infuriating place to live. imagine getting off at the wrong exit at an outer edge?
Does the game even allow for service only roads? If services can get from A to B faster, civilians will almost certainly congest that route. I haven't played this one, but if it's anything like other city builders I've played, you'll end up with most of the city abandoned while one road is packed because is shorter, and therefore "faster".
@@torgranael there could be a parallel service road, but I think if you balanced it correctly, it might work. there are two quick ways to the center and out, but to get to homes, work, and shops, you'd have to get off the highway. Maybe throw a few ring roads in. My thinking is that with only a one way road, it'll remove the need for traffic lights and roundabouts speeding up traffic overall.
i was thinking that, a one way road that goes through the circles would allow people to move freely within the city but not leave, would be cool if it functioned

Day 20 of waiting for Matt to upload Mindustry Part 3.
FFOTD: The storage block that stores power units is the Battery and Large Battery (theres no Medium Battery), the normal Battery has 40 hp, is 1 by 1 blocks, needs 5 copper, and 20 lead to build, it has 4000 power capacity. The Large Battery has 360 hp, is 3 by 3, needs 50 lead, 20 titanium, and 30 silicon to build, it has 50000 power capacity. You can place them next to each other so they link between them.
Maybe a second part for this city is where you add underground roads that reconnect to the start at a single point. It could also fix the issue of having to put all the utilities in the middle
Not sure about Skylines 2, but in the first Skylines people could teleport if a journey would take too long. This is probably how the building challenge videos end up with semi-functional cities.
@Real Civil Engineer If you use the landscaping tree tool, you can delete a lot of trees at once instead of deleting them one at a time with the bulldoze tool.
If only there was something like an underground bridge, where you could go below a building instead of above it. Truly a huge missed opportunity by the devs not to include such a thing...
You could have had the entry road changed into a one-way that connect to a two-way street creating a T intersection so that the rest of your roads can be 2 way
Back when I used to play Rollercoaster Tycoon, I used a similar idea. I put a "Do not enter" sign at the exit of the park so everyone could enter, but they couldn't leave. Made the guest count goals easy.

You don't need to do a one-way all the way; just the straight feeder road. Otherwise you need alternating one-way spoke roads to let people move between spiral layers, or else you're just doing a one-road city.
When you connect the end to the begin. It is still impossible to leave only to start the circle all over
To be honest, if you add four wheelspokes into the spiral that lead back to the start, it is a valid road network. And people still cannot leave 😁

I had a thought. What if you made the entrance road 1 way and then had all the other roads 2 ways this way people can drive into the city but never leave?
This is the architect version of Hotel California City….. the roads can all connect, two way traffic and all…. as long as no one can leave.

They can leave. They just have to walk. I noticed a lot of people walking backwards against the one-way street. Which means they drive in, abandon their car, and walk back home. Presumably to buy another one before having to go to work the next day.

Definitely would have liked to see the spiral connect to the entrance tunnel and each time you got bigger, you would remove the old tunnel entrance and move it out another ring or 2 at the end of the spiral.

Hey Matt, Hudson here. I really wish you made your realistic City Skylines play through free in your patron for brokies like me. I’d love to be a civil engineer when i grow up and make road designs, and for Christmas I’d actually like to learn something from your videos instead of 3 headed cows. Day 125 of asking Matt to add the Second Narrows Bridge, Ironworkers Memorial to the Wheel of Bridgetune
It is a cantilevered truss bridge, carrying 6 lanes of traffic from Vancouver to North Vancouver in B.C. across the second narrowing of the Burrard Inlet.
It's name comes from the fact that it collapsed twice during construction, which unalived 23 people in total (Hence the name, ironworkers memorial).
I was thinking, change the entrance tunnel into a one way off ramp. And the final outer spiral reconnecting to that one way entrance… and a ton of parking lots (with high parking prices and taxed heavily… for trapped parking income).
…so traffic can ONLY park or got back through the city… giving access to all the zones and zones 😂😂😂
As your city “touches” any outside connecting freeway… only attach the incoming freeway side to the city one way… deleting as many outgoing side of freeway nodes as possible. 😂 so “you can always check out, but you can never leave” -Eagles

If you wanted it to function more like a regular city, you could've just made the highway connection a 1 way road and then make the rest normal roads
So you could have intersecting 2 lane roads, it would still have prevented people from leaving the town but it would have made it more functional still.

i would be super interested in seeing this layout split in eight pizza slices with the cross roads being 2 way roads. giving everyone a way to get back to the start of the town, but not out of town.
You just need 1 one way road. Place the tunnel/entrance from the highway and everything else could be regular city. Then no one can leave.
@@ambassador1449 that sounds like an architect idea my dude. Eight pizza slices would cut down traffic significantly and lower commutes by over 80% which would be huge

The police driving over the grass and the sidewalk onto the middle of the road instead of its own dedicated lane on the right is pretty much on point in my experience
I found a new bestagon! The Octogon is the new bestagon. 2 road segments per side and you end up with a nice 2 by 2 diamond in the corners that fits nearly all of the unique buildings and parks.

Huh, made a city like this in CS1, and it was a load of fun. I managed to make it self-sustaining somehow

This city could be continued even after it runs out of room for the spiral road when it meets the shoreline... if you just reverse the spiral direction when you reach the seaside. The shape of the map would allow a very large second spiral... but there's no way to make a third spiral without breaking the no-intersection rule... unless you can build a bridge across the entire spiral after reaching its centre. There is definitely potential to continue this city in a variety of ways.

Let me share a good idea
Imagine making a road tunnel and in one end you place the poop pipe and the other side the river ... The game phisics will flow the poop into the road tunnel ? That means we have a new set up for crazy huge underground open poop tunnels !!!

Another Challenge for you RCE.
Have A City that only involves around farming. This includes commercial and normal industry so only relevant stuff like convient food and more can spawn. This will involve a lot of whack-a-mole with buildings and fudging the taxes.
Here's an idea: try building 2 cities apart from each other and try to maintain them both equally
Dont sleep on the continuous road tool, its like multiple curves, but you don't have to click twice each

You should connect end of road with start of road 🛣️ (underground road to have better effectiveness hospital, police station, and other )

could always try a city where every road is a bridge if it's even possible, may have to make smaller roads for buildings but the rest could be bridges
You could do a spiral into another spiral a mile over, so it’s a series of spirals with no way out. If you are born in the middle of the initial spiral you could end up in the 7 spiral by death.

I'd suggest footpaths inbetween the sprials, and a single bus lane one way going counter-spiral-wards, so that the public can walk home or pay a bus to take them home. if they absolutely have to travel to the end of the spiral, they can use their own car, but if they want to go backwards/home-wards, they'd have to pay or walk.
you do know your poo pipe doesn't need a road to connect to. It just needs the pipe connected underground to the road.
**Bug** When you were placing the school I noticed the highlighted green road went the wrong direction. It was lighting up the road down stream, but those sims that are down stream can't drive up stream to get to it.
I saw that when that police car came out, it avoided the area of road that don't have the "wear" markings. I think there's a bug with traffic doing this. I have an intersection that is "X" shaped, it's not even, so two corners are close, but the other two are wide corners. The cars will go all the way over to the left turn lane to make a right turn on the sharp corners where there are no wear markings for that right turn. I had to add in a slip lane and cut the corner for them to turn right normal.
I like it but you could have added a slip road connecting back to your tunnel entrance, as then they'd never be able to leave but still stay in the city

RCE I just wanted to let you know you can get helicopters for the police not just the fire department. You need to get a police headquarters and you can then upgrade it with a helipad on the roof.

most people i guess dont want to live next to a shop.

suburban sprawl loves their driving over living next door.
