Just a quick note on reputation systems. They can quickly end up as a death spiral. The AI gets more aggressive to you the more aggressive you are to them... which in turn will make you just be or seem more aggressive to them. If they give you less space, you're more prone to hit them, which will make them consider you more aggressive, etc. There is a reason they generally aren't done much.

Maybe it'll make sense for it to be more isolated per event/race? So you don't have to start off the next 5 races dealing with cars trying to run you off the road all the time. Or have something you can do to fix your reputation quickly instead of just playing keep away.

True. And honestly, I even enjoy lookalikes more in my games. But I worry not having licences would hurt the game’s branding and sales far more. Especially given the intended scope.
Like, look at the Midnight Club Series. 1 and 2 didn’t use licensed cars so they could let you really wreck and destroy those cars. But when they were working with DUB for 3 and LA, those games sold better because they included licensed cars. Something Rockstar was initially hesitant about. It turns out, most people care more about real cars being there than they do lookalikes with more functionality.
This is also why Need For Speed outlasted Burnout. Most people really like real cars they can customize. The only AAA game I can think of that is a massive success despite not having licenced cars is GTAV. And even then, GTAV has other things to offer besides customizing cars.
Similarly, even Rofflewaffle’s video is based on the idea of having 300 licensed cars in the hypothetical game. Specifically cars that have been underserved in other racing games. 300 licensed cars, even for less popular cars, is beyond the budget of any indie team. To realize that, you need essentially a small AAA studio.
In addition, having lookalikes clashes with the point of Rofflewaffle's game (and many other games that feature licenced cars), that being to highlight these specific cars and their unique history and quirks. Like, consider that a major appeal of Gran Turismo is that it's "a virtual car mueseum/encyclopedia" as well as a racing game. Every car has an entire backstory and history page. In GT7, you can click a button and have a virtual head pop up and tell you why that car, no matter how mundane, is a feat of engineering and stuff. It's stuff like this that made many people that weren't into cars, into cars.
This wouldn't really be possible in a game with lookalikes. Even if you had a lookalike of a Renault Clio or Ford Focus, you couldn't reference their actual history or role in motorsports or even how they relate to other cars and manufacturers (not without angering some copyright lawyers). So you can't really highlight the appeal of any of the cars you include. This is why games like Burnout, Midnight Club 1 and 2, and the entire GTA series have been very stingy on the "lore" and backstory of their fictional cars.
We have some examples of this happening in other games outside of racing games. Fighting Games are a good example of this because players often love both the moveset and playstyle of a character, as well as the, well, character of the character. Marvel vs Capcom Infinite demonstaeted this when they didn't have any X-Men or Fantastic 4 characters when they were present in prior games because Disney didn't have the film rights to them. The film rights were with Fox at the time. As a result, those characters were ommitted from Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. The director even "justified" it by saying "the functions of those characters are still present in others". Which, even though true, still badly hurt the game on launch.
So if such a game was to be made it would have a few options. If it used lookalikes, its sales potential would be significantly hampered and it would be unable to highlight the appeal of the cars themselves. But it could have more cars and do more with them (provided it had the budget) even with a smaller team. But if it used real cars, it could highlight their appeal but would require significantly more funding.

For years, I’ve had an idea for a racing game that is SCARILY similar to yours. Focusing more on gameplay and carlist, less on graphics.
Really, the only differences are all the cars are between 1980-2000, and a "trim" system, where you could go to a dealership and select what trim you want/can afford.

    • @cabbageboio

I think it'd be pretty cool to feature some South American tracks (like Interlagos and Oscar y Juan Gálvez, the latter being an old F1 track which I don't think was featured in any game ever) and cars (e.g. Dodge GTX, FNM Onça and IKA-Renault Torino) in the game, South America (Argentina and Brazil specifically) has a long motoring history that is completely ignored by racing game developers. Since you want to include a number of forgotten cars, it makes sense to have them be joined by a forgotten continent.

This concept kinda sounds like the Project Wingman to Gran Turismo's Ace Combat. The variant cars aspect reminds me of how SP weapons work differently between the two, with AC limiting you to one of three secondaries, where PW iterated on that system by offering different numbers of hardpoint slots as well as the different weapon selections, with duplicate weapon choices across multiple slots increasing not just reserves, but the number of potential launches per reload (twelve multi-lock air-to-ground missiles on the Chimera is fucking absurd and I love it.)

On the subject of bonus leagues, I've always wanted to play one that is an utter mismatch of disjointed events.
Single lap uphill climb followed by nascar oval racing followed by tight claustrophobic street circuits followed by an endurance race, ending in a solid middle-of-the-road finale.
All of these race types, yet you can only bring a single car to use on all of them.
It'd be bonkers to have as part of the standard progression, but as a bonus league it'd be perfect for some hilarious extra races.

when you started talking about the AI and the opponents personality, it reminded me of Need for Speed 4, where on the playstation version you get pretty much the same opponents all the time, and each had a unique AI, where opponents like Bullit and Nemesis were more quick and agressive, while clutch and gotcha were slower and more passive. so you are always concerned about having "nemesis" in your toe while trying to keep the pole. Even if they had no complex AI or anything, the fact they are always on the same positions and driving in a specific way, make them way more memorable.

"ludonarrative dissonance" might be video game specific because i struggle to see where else you could apply this specific idea where your actions in a story differ from the portrayed story. my favorite example of ludonarrative dissonance is how nathan drake in uncharted is portrayed as a funny, affable, rogueish history nerd/every man but according to the gameplay he's killed thousands of people, destroyed countless artifacts, and found multiple mythical cities that would upend world history.

My ideal GT would be entirely focused on the simulation mode, and simulating more things than usual; as in managing sponsorships, physically modifying your cars in first person akin to Apex Point (look it up); and affixing your car with said sponsorship decals in order to make more money and reputation. On the contrast, losing will hurt your sponsorship potential and damaging your car will require physical repairs in first person unless it gets totaled. All of this should of course be fully customizeable to make it more casual if the player so desires.

Personally, if I were to make my own dream racing game, I'd make something more akin to Midnight Club as I'm a big fan of arcade racing games. A game focusing on a large open map of a city where the map is designed to have loads of detail everywhere possible. Sidewalks could be driven on, entire pathways between buildings, small alleyways, certain parts of buildings could be driven through, approaching the same intersection from a different direction could create an entirely different situation because the surrounding streets aren't asymmetrical and the race itself might give you more freedom about the route you're taking. That sort of map design is very specific to Midnight Club. Burnout Paradise tried something similar for the city area of the map, but the game forgot to have checkpoint races, so all of that city detail becomes rather meaningless. There should've been races that encourage and test map knowledge, make you take routes that you had never thought of before.
Then to avoid the mistake Midnight Club Los Angeles did, all progression races need to be unique. LA cycled through a list of races for all events, making the progression feel somewhat repetitive, and so many of the different races still use the same parts of the map the same way, even further decreasing variety. So race repeats are only allowed for side missions, which too should still have some unique races of their own. Progression itself would be simply about starting with facing some local racers and as you progress more experienced racers start to become interested and invite you to their events along with some racers challenging you personally. So from small timers to big deal street racers, with you ending up becoming the biggest street racer. And then starts the second cycle of the game. The first cycle shall be year 1999 - 2000, and second cycle will be 2000 - 2001. The available cars and car prizes shall reflect this progression of time, and in the second cycle you're now being targeted for your title as the best. You're still invited to other race events, but only these personal challenge races are title bouts. Maybe the one who used to be the best comes back with a vengeance in the second cycle, maybe you'll face off against someone who has had a similar story to you and is now a sort of reflective rival.
And to make sure post game isn't dull, you can replay any old rival races you've already beaten and you can choose to do NG+, keeping all of your cars, parts and unlocks while the progression resets. On NG+ the game will now always tell what level of stats your opponents have so you can make a more fair car build to match them, make them eat your dust without any effort, or use a NG+ feature that gives them super stats to offer a proper challenge.
Something like that is what I'd want. Midnight Club with 3's approach to how races are done, LA's take on character writing, actual portion of the career where you are now the best and have to defend your title like in Punch-Out Wii, and ways to replay the game both in form of post game options and NG+ to give you reasons to keep playing the game. Could also add some stuff from TXR like making every part of the body carbon for the sake of weight reduction. Infinite retries though, since it's Midnight Club styled difficulty. That whole race series system is what caused LA to keep repeating the same races over and over again and it got tiresome.
Oh yeah cops exist. I think I'd just do them like MC 2 and 3 did them, or I'd try to combine that with how LA did them. So cops can appear during cruise and also during some races. During a race you can restart as per usual even if you're in a chase and you can move onto the next race just fine as well. Being caught only forces a race restart. But you'd also get an option to continue the chase after the race, because escaping the cops would now come with consequences: If you escape, you get a +5% bonus to your mission rewards for the next 30 mins, and escaping any chases adds yet another 5% up to max of +25% bonus while the timer resets. Being caught gives you a -5% reward deduction, but this can only go as low as -10%, and you can choose to pay the fine instead to remove the reward deduction. The reward deduction timer doesn't reset even if you're caught again, but it is still 30 mins long. So cops during races can be a fun addition, while properly engaging with chases is entirely optional and comes with proper benefits.

The specific respect features and the Challenge mode remind me a lot of the old EA NASCAR games, they had a Rival/Ally feature and challenges based on scenarios from real life races in previous seasons.

With every suggestion in your wonderful video my heart laughed - and cried at the same time; it cried because your videos again makes it so clear that Polyphony Digital missed EVERY chance to make GT7 a really good experience in the single player aspect. The car models and the physics are really fun, but there is literally no gameplay at all, the optics of the tracks are boring - always the same tormac and a little green - and in every “race” I’m permanently in fear that the AI turns the rear of my car in purpose to make things “more interesting” - at least that seems to be the intention of PD.
I love all of your suggestions; I would play your version for years and years, because your suggestions give so many reasons to be motivated again and again. Really wonderful!
I think if it would work out would fully depend on good balancing and good and fair AI. And when it comes to tuning you would have to avoid that after tuning every car loses it’s identity and feels more or less the same which happens very fast in GT7, why I prefer to drive the cars completely untuned; and to do that I have to do custom races which do not really work because of the shitty balancing and the horrible AI.
I assume there are not enough players to program the game you propose and make enough money with it, because the gaming industry knows that most players nowadays lose interest and jump from one game to another very fast. And the group of online players don’t care at all for an enjoyable single player mode.
But I at least was in heaven for about 90 minutes listening to your suggestions. Thank you very much for your thoughts and your engagement. I love your whole GT7-videos!

It makes the cars you've never heard of feel extra special and gives you this feeling of "I wonder what I'm gonna get next."

Hello mate - absolutely adore your videos and this is my first time commenting here, but I feel I have to just to say you've absolutely nailed everything I wish a racing game was!
The point about the car variations is something I was philosophising about just last week, thinking about how one-make race series could be made so much richer by virtue of variation with minimal effort. Of course, we're not talking regional differences between Mazda MX-5s, but cars that have different positives depending on how they're used. Let's take Minis as an example. By changing only the colours, badges, wheels, and grille, you could have a very standard and original Mini 850 (like the Clio RL in your point), while above it you could have a Mini-Cooper 998 as an intermediate model, followed up by the circuit-biased through high revs Mini-Cooper 970 S, as well as the rally-biased through high torque Mini-Cooper 1275 S. That way, you have four 1960s Minis that all perform very differently, but all have a use alongside each other in the game. Just to prove my point about the Cooper S's, Forza always uses the 1275 S, while Gran Turismo has been using the 970 S. Those two could exist alongside each other with minimal effort, and expanding that out to many other cars would make the gameplay feel endlessly rich with minimal relative work.
I would like to add something about the circuits though. While this would be labour-intensive, I've always felt that racing games underestimate the value of simulation. What we can't do in real life, we can in games, so why not have historic versions of famous circuits added into the game? I understand this falls way outside of your point about twisty circuits that suit low-powered cars, as well as coming into licencing issues with major circuits, but the possibility is there, so why isn't it more commonly used? While a few notable games have done this, it's something Forza and Gran Turismo have avoided, probably due to the labour needed to create faithful historic circuits?
The emphasis on learning about cars and their characteristics through races/circuits tuned to the cars is absolutely bob-on. These are what make the cars, so I find it silly that only GT1-6 have really touched on it, and your idea of adding series of cars that use similar engines, platforms, or even suspension systems is such a great idea.
In the Feature Races, complete with the tyre wear/fuel usage stuff, I'd love to see implemented a sense of mechanical sympathy. While that somewhat exists in terms of tyres, I'd love to see engine temperature and brake temperature simulated, whereby the player has to regulate their speed in order to keep their car performing as well as possible when racing in these longer events.
Edit: Finally reached the end, and I cannot quite express how much I agree with virtually everything you've said.

I like that you have two of my cars in the main game and another in the DLC idea. So you could say this suits my idea of a racing game! Please make this happen! I really enjoyed the early GT games because the car choose was so broad. Different models of the same car was interesting and I enjoyed learning about the model years and specs, the finer details between each. I like your ideas of modifying cars to suit situations rather than drowning in exotic cars that make things too easy. Your idea appeals to me 👍🏻

This feels like a manifestation of what I've seen a lot in this community (Roflwaffle, GT, Racing games as a whole). A good game. A game that doesn't just copy features but unleashes their potential. A game that, at least, doesn't suck.
Thinking about this topic made me remember Raycevick's "I love racing games, they suck" video and I think your idea of a game also perfectly fits into his narrative. Trying out something new, something stylized, something that isnt just car power and grafics creep in a blind race (pun not intended) for "realism". Just something, *anything* that breaks the monotony and is of good quality.
Let us hope that some developers out there here our cries.

I wish you good luck in that project. and regarding the car variations, THANK YOU. adding the lower spec variants of these relevant cars will definitely improve this project. that was something present in the two very first gran turismo. for instance, in GT2, you could chose either the japan only EK9 Civic Type R, but you could also chose for the european Civic EK4. Or even a 1.4L Civic. that is something that is absolutely missing in the recent Gran Turismos and every other racing games. sometimes, I'd love to drive and race an everyday "shitbox" that you can actually afford instead of driving only the most powerful variant of that model

i wish we had a mix of Forza and Gran Turismo style progression, have all these different types of events that let you try new cars, but also have some sort of way of gauging performance and not having to guess how fast the other opponents are gonna be, and what upgrades they used.
I love Gran Turismo 4 but its really frustrating when some races you can use a stock car and still be fairly competitive while others (Suzuki one make comes to mind) you have to have a fully upgraded car for, just to get no payout and a prize car you cant really use. not like this logic doesn't apply irl, when most racing does have certain limits to what can be done to your car, you cant just take a Touring car into a sport sedan race just because it has sport or standard tires.
And for car progression maybe do something like Forza Motorsport 4 but with even slower cars to start out with
instead of starting out with like "middle tier" cars, you start out with older kei cars, then you move on to more sporty kei cars, city cars, economy cars, commuters, budget sports cars, and so on...
what bothers me is that theres no power progression anymore, in modern racing games you can go from a 1980s honda civic, straight to a hellcat, within the first hour of playing

One idea that can work for this is a Junkyard where the player can find a wide array of cars in various states of disarray so that the player can look between each race or championship for a rare car that they can build up over time. This can be a cheaper option for those lucky enough and who are willing to put in the longer term effort to get rare or expensive cars. Tbh I just want this as an excuse to add a 24hrs of Lemons and other price limited events. It would be a lot harder to pull off, but it would be a more than welcome addition.

A lot of the earlier Protons either contain Mitsubishi parts in some way, or are straight up rebadged Mitsubishis, but there's a few gems like the Proton Satria GTi, which Lotus had a hand in tuning its handling (Maybe Protons for DLC)
Regardless, seeing a Malaysian vehicle on this list made my day, and seeing as it's the meme car that's often seen speeding on Malaysian highways, no better car to include for a game like this

The track day stuff with the unique drivers sounds really nice. It would add a lot to their chara ter, if they could in fact approach you based on the car you drive. Maybe there's a muscle car enthusiast that wants to check out your car. Maybe you're there with your Impreza and a guy challenges you to a race because he thinks Subaru bros are dumb and likes to dunk on them. You would immediately know what everyone is about and their quest lines could be themed accordingly and range from racing them to winning a specific event with their favourite car or managingto find/buy a rare car of theor interest at the used car dealer.

It's true that some players will just gloss over the list like any other (GT5 and 6 spring to mind) but for those who do keep a look out for their toughest rivals, especially when they're expected to come up in multiple places, that little detail will go a long way to filling out a narrative where there technically isn't one.

This is very close to (and in many cases a major improvement upon) my best ideas for a track racer game.
I love the way you would use the respect mechanism in defense mode.
I love the idea of picking on a particular driver just to make that driver more aggressive toward me.
I love the Bonus League Relay Race idea.
I love the budget car race idea! This is something that can actually be done in a video game but not in real life since people just lie about how much they spend.
For the Viper (1st Gen), are you using that to refer specifically to the RT/10 or the RT/10 and the first GTS? I don't think I've seen an RT/10 in a racing game since Gran Turismo 2 and it's been sorely missed.
For the Cavalier, I like you're choice but would have also accepted the 2nd Gen as a first priority cavalier.

Interesting ideas. For me GT sure classic tracks, cars (better rewards for challenges) & more but to me I keep having my ideal racing game in mind
To me bits of the Sega GT car builder & custom events. Drag racing, hill climbs, touge all things I miss in games.
The flexibility of events in old GT games. Good rewards/roulettes not the awkward credit, car, invites and more ones we have now.
The walkable dealership/garage of PGR2. GT7 literally someone said while watching it mentioned VR and I'm like yeah that'd be cool but sad it will be just a cutscene and it was a cutscene.
The cellshaded style of Auto Modellista or GT Pro Series due to being easier to work with of visuals/also keep that style unique and alive.
Just little details from different games.
Or quality of life like the GT1-2 & 5 menu jumping buttons. The GT4 mod with them says enough of a benefit to it for garage and more so less menu hopping around all the time. GT5 had minimal car part purchasing before a race but it was still a cool menu quick access feature for the few you could add to the cars.
    Little details.
Displacement and other details for event types, power to ratio ratio, heavy weight challenge maybe. Maybe a nitrous event. Maybe a expanded car size event for wings or body kits/downforce event.
As going for fictional (vision GT is ok of car ideas for manufacturers but it isn't the same I mean these or Sega GT chassis and whatever parts to customise I prefer the latter and 'being' the manufacturer is just cool) cars due to licenses. So may or may not have details about certain cars but country maybe but more other event types. For races at least if cone gates/autocross or 1 lap magic or other event types or new ones to give variety.
Open wheel then just go karts. Spins on event types for more strict car ranges, more unbalanced events maybe.
Maybe some Tokyo Extreme Racer Drift 2 gymkhana or talking yo opponents maybe bets like Juiced or others.
Interesting tracks like Conplex String and corner elements like it. Like Tahiti Maze has. Like Cape Ring has.
I have drawn up race tracks ideas for years on paper just for fun, same with tech mof ideas for Minecraft using elements from the game so some stuff just was fun to come up with besides racing game research ovrr the yesrs and think about my inspirations from other games but still need original ones still somewhere. Or spins on the existing.

I’ve formulated some ideas regarding my version of GT, and there seems to be some overlap, lol.
For my spin, career mode would have persistent damage, so players are encouraged to drive cleanly and not total their cars. All the cars in my version would also be *fictional*, but mostly road based. A controversial decision, but since damage can get pretty brutal in my version, totally worth it.
I’d also do what BeamNG does for their car selection. Not a ton, but each one has a bunch of trims/parts to swap out so ONE car can fit multiple roles when need be.
Sorry for the long winded comment, but this stuff excites me. So glad I’m not the only one formulating this stuff in my head, haha. 😅

What could be done in relation to the "track day mode" is a way to integrate it into the main campaign. That way being a Juiced-style event calendar.
A calendar in front of the player that has some spots already pre-filled with curated or randomized events that would take X days to complete (based on amount of races) each if the player decides to enter them; with weekends being "track days" with free admittance to any unlocked track where you can do the track day activities. Free spots on the calendar could be used to create your own races, freely join any of the career-specific races or, upon meeting certain conditions, a chance of events to happen that would give special prizes. One-on-ones with special drivers you've met, sponsor events, etc.
This way there's an element of surprise to the career and a better integration between career and track days besides just the driver rep system.

The Pontiac Firefly, Geo Metro, and Chevrolet Sprint were rebadged models of the Suzuki Cultus, which started life as a design by General Motors that was sold to Suzuki in exchange for shares. What makes the Firefly more obscure than its other GM-badged counterparts, however, was that it was sold exclusively in Canada. Firefly hatchbacks like the one my family owned were also made in Canada.

I discovered your channel with the critique-video about the inconsisten ai in GT7. I was astonished by the depth of your analysis and the trials you made. Then I literally binge watched your GT7 critique video series. Why? Not because I agreed every criticism you made about the game design, the reward system, the campaign or the online-biased nature of the game that take up space from the single player experience that made GT legendary. (Anything but, I still consider GT7 a pearl of a game, despite objective issues, maybe just oriented on today's eSport purposes)
I simply was astounded by the level of research and details you put in every video; everything you said was for a purpose, and you always proposed a fix for this or that aspect. No criticism ended in itself, thus making that a good criticism.
GT7 is almost the only game I watch content about on YT, and you are literally one of the best storytellers around; I learned to not get pissed if you roast it. Because it's not just about the story, but the research for it. I also love your retrospectives on GT, a type of content I usually don't look for.
I consider this video as your ultimate work (but I hope not the last); you literally created a new concept for game just for the joy of doing it; pure passion and dedication (seriously, just a list of 400 cars is bonkers and I can bet on it it's not a copy paste, not to mention every other chapter) and no search for hype: you didn't talk about a game that promises firework, but "just" about the ultimate gamer experience, not caring about the needs of mainstream gaming market. Probably it won't be recognized as that by everyone, because of the length and the facts it's for a niche of people, but the recognition is real.
I wish you the best for your future and your work, it's truly enormous and amazing

Slightly off-topic, but I'm getting a lot of nostalgia during the "Car variations" section.
Not because of what he's saying, but because in the footage there's a blue GTO, which I remember from my time playing the original Gran Turismo back in the day as my preferred starter car (it was one of the more powerful and expensive used cars you could get in the PAL version on Day 1 of the in-game clock)
A quick wiki search shows the car in the footage to be a '91 GTO, but GT1 had the '92 and the '92 Twinturbo. That being said, the fact that I only learned the difference after looking up the GT1 and GT7 car lists from the GT wiki shows how similar the two models were visually.
[You can see it pretty well around the 20:02 minute mark]

I always thought of car game were you start with the basic model or choose a trim level at a dealership like you would in real life with the ability to unlock or upgrade the car to a track/performance model that existed of it. Like, say I buy a Lancia Delta and upgrade it to were I unlock and purchase the S4 Evolution that would be a journey that would make me prefer a smaller car list if you can do that.

The only major issue I see with this is the "a small but passionate team could make this". 300+ licenced cars would require a AAA level budget sadly.

Graphics don't make a game, as you said it is about how style is used to *appear* realistic. I think for people that would want the hypercars and such, a potential expansion pack/dlc could be added, like car packs or even a campaign after the player has achieved completion of the base game to reward long term players while also giving incentive to casual players, and what's best is that it is made to be completely optional, and the cars would be power-scaled fairly as to not be pay-to-win.
Not only would Leggera be true to the ethos of the game, but also cater to many people.
(i'd also want to include cars that are also relatable or popular in other countries, like the Nissan Tsuru/Sunny)

I’d bring back the flip and roll and destroy your car crashing awesomeness from number 5. There is an ambulance available now
