I don't hunt a lot of public ground but when you do I'll find those scent wicks hanging everywhere that and bright eyes stuck to every tree.
You're right about the size of the rub though I've seen spikes rub trees as big around as your leg an early-season bigger bucks will often rub on those little whippy trees.
I love scouting when there's snow on the ground but I always wait a day or two after a fresh snow.
Usually the morning right after a snow unless you have a lot of deer you're not going to find a lot tracks.

Yes, those scent wicks are nonsense.
People who use those are basically baiting immature deer, not hunting for them.

That is stupid and expensive. I use my girlfriends cotton plugs. They come complete with a string to tie to a limb.
