She says the most important thing is to “show up and be seen!” Why do I want to do the opposite? I want to move as far away from people as possible! Lots of land with woods. I want to only hear the birds chirping, leaves in the wind, and the babble of the creek! I don’t want to be seen! I just want some peace and quiet and no one demanding my time every second of my life!
You stole my comment! 😂 No, really...I concur wholeheartedly. But since I must work until I am financially stable and paid debts, I can use this to catapult myself out of this reserved box of shame that it seems people want us in to speaking from my heart and know what is right for me. Call it opinion; call it fact - our perception is our reality. I am worthy and if I have a stake in it, I will speak without worrying about what others think. That doesn't mean being hurtful or hateful towards others for their beliefs...it means damn you if you think I won't stand up for my right to voice my truths. No argument, no your right and I'm wrong cut and dry conversations. Sharing points of view and doing what is best for the common good or group at large is a lost art. It's to the detriment of everyone we attempt to be open to hearing each other's voice. Only then can we live in harmony.
Once I was volunteering at a car wash event to raise money for sick children. Some people yelled out as they drove by "what a stupid thing to do on a sunny Saturday". That's when it hit me that no matter what we do, there are people who are going to criticize us. They don't understand, they are jealous, miserable, whatever. We need to ignore them and stay true to ourselves.
Don't "regret". Learning things as a senior citizen, makes me more grateful for my life on a daily basis. When I go out the door, I try to carry with me a quote from my mom ..."There is no wisdom, greater than kindness". Thanks Mom!
Kindness without wisdom can be a disaster waiting to happen. Most downtown churches have experienced a person showing up asking for money so they can eat. When the offer to take that person to a store or restaurant and buy them some food is declined you know they were not interested in using the money to buy food.
In my senior years I have discovered that the critic, unless it is constructive and meant to help you improve, doesn't matter. No matter what you do you will have critics. Sometimes because they are a person that just enjoys being critical. My grandson, the most amazing human I have ever known, gets a lot of criticism from his mother. I told him that he is almost a grown man, 3 weeks away, and that he should start living his own life in the way he knows is right for him. He has something so many people lack.....common sense. He is the kindest most empathetic person ever. If he never gets rich, it's OK because I know he will always be trying to help others. How can you criticize that?
I am old as well. When I was a child the definition of “success” was not fame and wealth, beauty and perpetual youth. My grandparents aspiration for me was that I would grow up to be a good person. A good person, that’s it.
You sound like me 75yr old female. Nothing can rattle me. I have had so many threats, insults and critisms in the comments of face book, but it made me chuckle that these little people cannot debate with you and just turn to school yard tactics. I always left feeling stupid, at which point they would give up and leave the link. Tails between their legs. 😇😂

I discovered you late in my life...at 68 yr old woman. However I feel truly blessed by listening to everything I can find on your talk's. Learning to love and accept myself has been a journey of discovery. Have been a working carer for 17 yrs. Changing lanes next July to get cert IV in community services after believing for too long that I didn't have the courage to or the smarts and getting over broken pelvis currently. I don't care I believe that I have the ability to empower other women in fragile circumstances to find their own voice. When I went into councelling for various issues. The first question my counsellor asked me to ask myself was is this good for me. That's when the shift started for me. The second question was is this my responsibility. I've learnt so much after four years of councelling.
I am a Manager, a Leader and an Empath. My style of leadership is different and yet it works because I connect with those who work for me. Is it easy? No. This speech touches on this style. Thank you.
I am inspired by your insight on vulnerability. I have spent most of 65 years trying to escape it. Thank you for posting, I am called to listen to this video again..
Hi, Folks. I have just listened to this speech again and I would like to add a few more of my thoughts on it, not just for your personal life - AND mine - but also about 'getting into the arena'. 1. You are only 'vulnerable' if you care what others may think of you, say about you or try to do to you. I am not saying that you should not care what ANYBODY thinks of you or says about you or does to you. BUTTTTT, IF you are going to allow some people to affect your life, be VERY careful about which people you choose to allow to have any effect on your life. Again, "The ones who matter won't mind and the ones who mind don't matter." 2. The so-called 'vulnerability' is a social construct which was unheard of before about the 1960s when all this 'new age' stuff started being pushed at us. Please don't misunderstand me. If you want to improve yourself, by all means, GO for it, by whatever means you choose. I personally have been a practising Spiritualist since about 1970. What I am NOT is 'vulnerable' because I just plain don't care what all but a VERY select few other people might think of me or say about me. 3. While ever you remain TRUE to YOUR principles - not anybody else's principles or what you 'think' your principles should be to satisfy somebody else's ideas but YOUR principles - and still keep an open mind that is willing to learn both from your own mistakes and triumphs and from other people's mistakes and triumphs and from their words-to-actions relevance, as well as taking responsibility for your own thoughts, words and deeds, what others may think of you or say about you DOES NOT MATTER. 4. Personal responsibility is HYOOOOGE. If you wish to be seen as authentic, you HAVE to take responsibility for ALL of your thoughts, words and deeds, not only for other people's perceptions of you but also for your own perceptions of you. If you want to get a message across to other people, you need to be SEEN to be walking a walk that matches your talk. 5. You - AND I - need to practise critical thinking and analysis, both of the world around you AND of yourself. You need to be CONSTANTLY aware of any bias or inconsistencies that you might see, both in your own thoughts, words and deeds and in the thoughts, words and deeds of others and RESPOND accordingly. 6. You - AND I - need to learn to RESPOND thoughtfully rather than 'react' to what we see and hear around us. We also need to CHOOSE CAREFULLY just what we respond to and what is left to 'let go through to the catcher/keeper'. Some things just don't deserve a response. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
I remember her talk and really liked it. I thought she looks attractive, genuine wuth a warm personality. I do not understand people leaving negative comments about her appearrance. At any rate, her message flew over their heads. Thank you for the quote from Theodore Rooseveld that I was unfamiliar with.
Showing up and Being seen. (Inspirational ✨ in many levels) Failures are guaranteed in the beginning. The more failures, the closer to success. Still no guarantees. Lastly. Compete against yourself or only those who were in the "arena." Worse critics are those who never been thru it. Thanks for Video. Now carry this to my heart.
Wise Words. Some people represent the Worst of Humanity, and some people represent the best of humanity. It's best not to care what others think or say. Like you say if you are in the arena speak from your heart. In hopes that you can make someone's life better. So, it doesn't matter how many haters there are. You have impacted someone's life in a positive way. I don't think there is anything more important than that.
Life is uncertain and that’s why we have been suffering… the Buddha explicitly stated that to us. Yet, we can live a meaningful life if we know who we are and work with the nature of life. Very inspiring video! Thanks a lot! 🙏
This is just about as good as it gets. I think that every human being is born to create in their own unique way. Every human being is born to blossom, with their own colors and in their own time. But most people bind up that part of themselves, place it on a pyre, and offer up the ashes to the gods of fear and (perceived) social acceptance. And in the end, all that we could have been has been sacrificed to an illusion.
I strongly agree with her about assigning blame. I spent years in useless business meetings where the main goal was determining whose fault it was for some mishap. Today, I constantly remind people that assigning blame is the most useless activity ever invented by mankind - it NEVER solves any problem. It has no place within a functional team (or society). If you are so petty and immature that you need a scapegoat, then talk with your therapist; the rest of us have problems to solve. Her quote from Teddy Roosevelt is one of my favorites. Another way to say it is that your opinion has little or no value if you don't have skin in the game. She is still young and will probably learn about 10 more life-changing quotes over the next 30 years, but I'm happy she shared this one so enthusiastically. :)
Telling my true story makes me numb , keep moving laughing making a joke seeing true laughter makes me feel alive . Looking up ⬆️ sharing this make me smile. Thank you 🙏 🇺🇸🦅🌹
One of the most truthful and inspiring videos that I have seen. If we embraced this at the deepest level, then we would shine brighter than any critic who hides behind a computer and tries to pull down those who aspire to make the world a better place.
I needed to hear this this morning. God always knows what we need and there are no coincidences. Seems there is so much guilt in unapologetically living out who you are and having a voice in this world, which seems so strange to me in an age that is exonerating broken and misguided people. A complete dichotomy. It's just hard to be a human.
Brene, your sincere authenticity is brave and powerful. Our brains are wired from early childhood to fit in and be like others to survive. But you are right. When we feel like we truly belong, we are free to thrive, which liberates our creative energy. In this modern world, we are brainwashed to be politically correct even when it is not in alignment with our human nature. God bless and continue challenging others to live an authentic life. Peggykay
I think it’s helpful to remember the arena may not be a big one. Trying to be a better person, and create a better world, often takes place in one small arena after another
Wauw. Now thàt was exactly what I needed to hear and with every word you spoke, I was just nodding, admitting that your talk is so true, real, fair, honest, modest. I really will listen to this story many more times in the next few weeks. I really have the feeling I gotta think real hard from different angles. I really gotta realize and accept your truth. Because I haven’t really thought about my life like the way you have, but it opens my eyes and touches my soul. Thanks a lot!!!
Kudos to being and staying in the arena. Women adore you and I am now observe so many men speaking to your work. Thank you for expanding our consciousness and capacity for greatness.
The first time I experienced vulnerability was later in life when I lost my intimate connection and feeling wanted. Feeling vulnerable came when I had to admit I actually needed those things.
6:56 Absolutely this! 🙌🏼 I think that all the time. If people showed more compassion and understanding and truly prepared their kids for being a part of a society/community, our world could be so much different 😮💨
I’m disabled due to a handful of autoimmune diseases that are progressive and incurable. I was also brought up in a home where nothing was good enough. This hits hard but it’s true. Authenticity is paramount. Drop the mask, it will only help those around you.
I didn't know until I was 52 and near death, what diseases need. Cancer had nearly destroyed my liver when I was blessed with knowledge about the vegan diet and tried it. Six weeks later I realized this is it. People like me who lived through it know it, some doctors and experts know it, but the industries that make trillions in marketing the cause and treating diseases don't want us to know and they invest to provide reasons for us to doubt it.
Hi I am a s.w therapist and have been following you since your Ted talk. I have learned sooo much in my 50's and now am in the beginning of my 60's Who said that youth is wasted on the young Anyhow to summarize You rock woman. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Brene. I needed this. It is 3:26 am and I am avoiding feeling. I want to be numb of the feelings I have when I think of where I don't measure up against coworkers. I also then numb my joy. Where is my focus? I needed to hear this.
Thank you. You made me think. Positively! In addition to that you engaged me in some personal reflection. I was in sales for years and received multi-million dollar ass-kickings. I knew the Roosevelt quote and had read it numerous times over the years. Playing this quote in the middle of your perspective in this video brought it back to me and made me think about today & what I can do now to better myself & life as I know it. Thanks & God Bless You!!
I have stood in the arena all my life !!..only my maker as my back ttuly does iam blessed so many times hes stood and protected me with his light and helped ne on my way in life and kept the lions and fofs away ..
Very well said, I think everyone wants to be successful in there own ways. Although, we are too afraid to make that leap because we could fall. It's scary but if we do not leap our creations may never come out for the world to see and that's sad. Each of us has a gift, I want to show mine, and I hope you all want to show yours!!
as someone who has accepted help and waited years for the system to follow through on helping ending my homelessness over 10 times i think perspectives need to broaden to allow for what qualifies as being in the arena
Your words always help me understand being a human. You keep inspiring me to show up every day, to stay in the arena. And keep daring to be a kind, empathetic, creative person.
I know this, whatever someone does, good or bad, people will always talk, they will always judge. It's up to us to ignore them or take into consideration their saying. Personally speaking, I went through many tough situations in my life, as many people as well, and I'm still struggling to cope with some issues. However, I know that through hard work and faith, things and goals are possible to be realized, nomatter what others may think. After all, it's my life and since others are not in my shoes, their criticism or opinion doesn't count to me!
This is the essentailly the same message as David Goggins: Look inside yourself. Face your demons. Be vulnerable. Then do the right thing, do the thing you know you should be doing regardless of how difficult it is, regardless of how much you don't want to do it. It is the only thing that leads to personal growth. (see the Andrew Huberman podcast interview of David Goggins on inner strength)
Thank you very much. How right she is! 🧠🤝 Someone had to say it. I showed myself vulnerable. Is society ready for this? ❤🩹 To be vulnerable is to be human. That's all we should be. 💎
I’m a fan. Mindfulness, which seems to be what you’re taking about, and the real magic of joy, grace, and gratitude, are real. And also I need to get back in the arena to kick some ass.
Am I the ONLY viewer who noticed the irony in the visual presentation? Brene Brown tells us that ONE of the hurtful comments she read was "Less research, more botox." Yet 98% of the people in the visuals are young and beautiful. So the producer simply added more fire to the fuel of "We must be young and beautiful. That is the supreme value."
@susanburton7985, everyone is absolutely entitled to their own opinion/ perspective. Pretty sure this was meant to be a positive, motivational piece. If all you have to offer is a negative perspective, you might want to do more positive, personal introspection. I'm not instigating a argument, just imo. You're absolutely free to do your will without anyone's permission! 💯♥️

Thank you.
Yes it is special. Your comment shows that you have no idea what it is or means.@XvonPocalypse
Little baby quote really touched me and one I wished I heard when my two beautiful children arrived in this world
Wow! What an amazing human being! She really gets what it means to be authentic unapologetically. Needed this today. Thank you 🌸 🙏
I am inspired by your insight on vulnerability.
Again, "The ones who matter won't mind and the ones who mind don't matter."
Deas Plant.
Love it: "The ones who matter won't mind and the ones who mind don't matter."
I remember her talk and really liked it. I thought she looks attractive, genuine wuth a warm personality. I do not understand people leaving negative comments about her appearrance. At any rate, her message flew over their heads. Thank you for the quote from Theodore Rooseveld that I was unfamiliar with.
Thank you for speaking some truths that are global, not just American. Very encouraging! Don't ever stop
To all those on here making negative remarks, you do realize you're proving her point. Right?
Learning to reframe REGRETS as LESSONS LEARNED releases their destructive grip and turns them into wisdom. Apply grace liberally!
Showing up and Being seen. (Inspirational ✨ in many levels)
Failures are guaranteed in the beginning. The more failures, the closer to success. Still no guarantees.
Lastly. Compete against yourself or only those who were in the "arena." Worse critics are those who never been thru it.
Thanks for Video. Now carry this to my heart.
Brene and her work has had such a profound impact on my life and on how I show up for myself and for others. Mad appreciation. Thank you
What an awsome speech. I believe in gratitude and vulnerability,
Thank you ❤️
Hurt people hurt people. Never fails.
😊
Love this!
We have that quote over our kitchen table. It is one of the most powerful things I have ever read and we try to live our lives by it. ❤
Thanks for the reminder of the courage it takes to be authentic and graciously forgive those who are projecting their fear onto you.
Thank you! Bless you!!! This is so real ..... Og Mandino said 'do all things with love.' That includes love for self. Keep living in light!❤
❤️
Wow! I am impressed. That was incredible. This person knows humanity in all its dimensions.
I'm so very grateful that I met up with failure starting around age five. It's never left my side.
The journey, the time of awakening is different for everyone, it's a process and each in his/her own time. Getting there eventually is the gift!
Life is uncertain and that’s why we have been suffering… the Buddha explicitly stated that to us. Yet, we can live a meaningful life if we know who we are and work with the nature of life. Very inspiring video! Thanks a lot! 🙏
Dear Brene, thank you for inspiring me and being a blessing to all of us.
Ouchhh
I'm a peer specialist. Thank you.
Sometimes being numb is significantly better than the feeling the immense pain when one is emotionally and mentally broken.
Lol it's not the haters. It's apathy. Most people, including me don't give a single care about anything.

The level of achievement one has, directly corresponds with the level of criticism they can handle.
You are Awesomeness! Never forget it...😎💕🕊
I needed to hear this this morning.
Peggykay
"You are worthy"… Some thing about that statement teared me up.
Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.

Kudos to being and staying in the arena. Women adore you and I am now observe so many men speaking to your work. Thank you for expanding our consciousness and capacity for greatness.
😍
The first time I experienced vulnerability was later in life when I lost my intimate connection and feeling wanted. Feeling vulnerable came when I had to admit I actually needed those things.

Absolutely this! 🙌🏼 I think that all the time. If people showed more compassion and understanding and truly prepared their kids for being a part of a society/community, our world could be so much different 😮💨
❤️🔥
Watch Dr Gabor Mate , he’s very good to .
This is so true its very sad 😢xx
Plus when you know you know and it is so frustrating 😤 xxx
My first priority was creating a culture when I took command of units in the army. This entailed establishment of values and expectations.
Hi
I am a s.w therapist and have been following you since your Ted talk.
I have learned sooo much in my 50's and now am in the beginning of my 60's
Who said that youth is wasted on the young
Anyhow to summarize
You rock woman.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your comment ❤️
I thought the title was usual click bait, but wow. Saving and will watch again.
Thank you so much sir ❤️
My father introduced me to "The Man in the Arena" at a young age. I've never forgot its meaning and have no issue with, being the man in the arena...
Thank you Brene. I needed this. It is 3:26 am and I am avoiding feeling. I want to be numb of the feelings I have when I think of where I don't measure up against coworkers. I also then numb my joy. Where is my focus? I needed to hear this.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Hello Christine
How are you doing today?
@Brene Brown: Hats off to you!!
I've heard some of this talk before but it really was just what I needed to hear in this moment. Thank you.
Absolutely spot on!!! Thanks.
"Being open to vulnerability means you are strong."
I absolutely agree, everyone has a gift but doubting about being talented enough because of society pressure also.
as someone who has accepted help and waited years for the system to follow through on helping ending my homelessness over 10 times i think perspectives need to broaden to allow for what qualifies as being in the arena
Good point about how we raise our kids.
"It's not about winning or losing, is about showing up and been seen."

WOW!!! Just wow ✨⭐️🌟💫 SUPER AMAZING MESSAGE 👑 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you so much ❤️
An audience at a lecture is SUPPOSED to be speechless. That’s normal, especially if it’s boring 😊
I admire your confidence...
Your words always help me understand being a human. You keep inspiring me to show up every day, to stay in the arena. And keep daring to be a kind, empathetic, creative person.
I will listen to this again.
And again
Thanks ❤️
I know this, whatever someone does, good or bad, people will always talk, they will always judge. It's up to us to ignore them or take into consideration their saying.
Personally speaking, I went through many tough situations in my life, as many people as well, and I'm still struggling to cope with some issues. However, I know that through hard work and faith, things and goals are possible to be realized, nomatter what others may think. After all, it's my life and since others are not in my shoes, their criticism or opinion doesn't count to me!
I’m in the arena.
😊
Thank you very much. How right she is! 🧠🤝
Someone had to say it. I showed myself vulnerable. Is society ready for this? ❤🩹
To be vulnerable is to be human. That's all we should be. 💎
My goal is to be human!
If you noticed, this is not the official channel of Brene Brown. So, is her speech twisted to fenefit this UA-cam channel.
I agree. I hate these visuals. What's wrong with just watching the person giving the speech, without bacground violin-soup
Interesting thought - thank you
@@zinkadu Sometimes the footage is copyrighted so they have to find something that isn't. Footage like what's in the video is usually fair use.
