She says the most important thing is to “show up and be seen!” Why do I want to do the opposite? I want to move as far away from people as possible! Lots of land with woods. I want to only hear the birds chirping, leaves in the wind, and the babble of the creek! I don’t want to be seen! I just want some peace and quiet and no one demanding my time every second of my life!

You stole my comment! 😂 No, really...I concur wholeheartedly. But since I must work until I am financially stable and paid debts, I can use this to catapult myself out of this reserved box of shame that it seems people want us in to speaking from my heart and know what is right for me. Call it opinion; call it fact - our perception is our reality. I am worthy and if I have a stake in it, I will speak without worrying about what others think. That doesn't mean being hurtful or hateful towards others for their beliefs...it means damn you if you think I won't stand up for my right to voice my truths. No argument, no your right and I'm wrong cut and dry conversations. Sharing points of view and doing what is best for the common good or group at large is a lost art. It's to the detriment of everyone we attempt to be open to hearing each other's voice. Only then can we live in harmony.

Once I was volunteering at a car wash event to raise money for sick children. Some people yelled out as they drove by "what a stupid thing to do on a sunny Saturday". That's when it hit me that no matter what we do, there are people who are going to criticize us. They don't understand, they are jealous, miserable, whatever. We need to ignore them and stay true to ourselves.

Kindness without wisdom can be a disaster waiting to happen. Most downtown churches have experienced a person showing up asking for money so they can eat. You are not creative subject to others views, we are living to an audiences of One - being and doing our best
People who purport to believe in philosophies and theories must 1st be living them as their witness example - otherwise all your looking at is hypocrisy. Through the witnessing alone, then we can choose to follow… or not!

In my senior years I have discovered that the critic, unless it is constructive and meant to help you improve, doesn't matter. No matter what you do you will have critics. Sometimes because they are a person that just enjoys being critical. My grandson, the most amazing human I have ever known, gets a lot of criticism from his mother. I told him that he is almost a grown man, 3 weeks away, and that he should start living his own life in the way he knows is right for him. He has something so many people lack.....common sense. He is the kindest most empathetic person ever. If he never gets rich, it's OK because I know he will always be trying to help others. How can you criticize that?

Dear Brene, getting into the arena was never about being seen; you missed the point. Being in the arena is about fighting for whatever it is. That is right and good and true. It’s not about attention. It’s not about being brave. It’s about pursuing truth and goodness. If you do that, then it doesn’t matter what other people think of you. It doesn’t matter whether you’re seen or not seen. The arena isn’t the goal. The possibility of advancing something bigger than yourself is the goal.

Hear hear. Well said. I kept wondering why she was focusing on the concept “Be Seen.” If anyone else could read/ listen carefully about the Roosevelt quote her interpretation is her interpretation. Roosevelt’s statement is about not allowing a critic’s judgement to affect one’s significance/ goal/ journey is imperative. That it’s not about the end result or achieving greatness, it’s about doing the hard work and knowing one self and their worth regardless of what others may say. Now if that person happens to “be seen” her words, it’s besides the point. If they don’t find or garner acclaim it’s not relative. Thank you for your salient point which I personally think was more direct and clear then her Ted talk. In my opinion, “Being seen” is another wild goose chase.

    • @frixiedust

Being seen is not about attention. It's about feeling connected. It's about human connection and that is something that will achieve bigger outcomes than one's personal goals.

    • @kayecastleman6353

I disagree. Being in the arena is all about being seen. True, there may be fighting involved, but it may be simply engaging, unapologetically, as a gay person, old person, fat person, someone with limitations or disabilities, or anyone who struggles with a new challenge. Brene is looking at this as a vulnerability researcher, and she sees how the quote can be applied to every challenge in life. The arena is where we show up for life. We don't hide ourselves away or make ourselves small for fear of being judged. Being seen isn't about attention, but it is all about being brave.

    Hi, Folks.
I have just listened to this speech again and I would like to add a few more of my thoughts on it, not just for your personal life - AND mine - but also about 'getting into the arena'.
    1. You are only 'vulnerable' if you care what others may think of you, say about you or try to do to you. I am not saying that you should not care what ANYBODY thinks of you or says about you or does to you. BUTTTTT, IF you are going to allow some people to affect your life, be VERY careful about which people you choose to allow to have any effect on your life.
Again, "The ones who matter won't mind and the ones who mind don't matter."
    2. The so-called 'vulnerability' is a social construct which was unheard of before about the 1960s when all this 'new age' stuff started being pushed at us. Please don't misunderstand me. If you want to improve yourself, by all means, GO for it, by whatever means you choose. I personally have been a practising Spiritualist since about 1970. What I am NOT is 'vulnerable' because I just plain don't care what all but a VERY select few other people might think of me or say about me.
    3. While ever you remain TRUE to YOUR principles - not anybody else's principles or what you 'think' your principles should be to satisfy somebody else's ideas but YOUR principles - and still keep an open mind that is willing to learn both from your own mistakes and triumphs and from other people's mistakes and triumphs and from their words-to-actions relevance, as well as taking responsibility for your own thoughts, words and deeds, what others may think of you or say about you DOES NOT MATTER.
    4. Personal responsibility is HYOOOOGE. If you wish to be seen as authentic, you HAVE to take responsibility for ALL of your thoughts, words and deeds, not only for other people's perceptions of you but also for your own perceptions of you. If you want to get a message across to other people, you need to be SEEN to be walking a walk that matches your talk.
    5. You - AND I - need to practise critical thinking and analysis, both of the world around you AND of yourself. You need to be CONSTANTLY aware of any bias or inconsistencies that you might see, both in your own thoughts, words and deeds and in the thoughts, words and deeds of others and RESPOND accordingly.
    6. You - AND I - need to learn to RESPOND thoughtfully rather than 'react' to what we see and hear around us. We also need to CHOOSE CAREFULLY just what we respond to and what is left to 'let go through to the catcher/keeper'. Some things just don't deserve a response.
    Just my 0.02.
You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

You know, once i was in a bookshop wandering and wondering “Am i being stupid, for being in love with someone who doesn’t want me?”.
Then her book “The courage of being vulnerable” popped up. 💙

    • @LibraNYC4ever
      @LibraNYC4ever 8 місяців тому

First, the question isn’t about your stupidity. The proper question is that are you being foolish for being in love with someone who doesn’t want you. If someone doesn’t want you, then they obviously don’t know your value and furthermore, you may want to consider how valuable you are in the first place. When you open yourself up to the opportunity of love, you tend to give more attention to the one that you would like to have that connection with. However, you cannot forget your worth in the process, so no, you’re not stupid or foolish you have forgotten your worth and ended up putting the other person higher than you. Come back to focusing on who you are and forget the people who don’t see or appreciate you.

      @@LibraNYC4ever Thank you so much.
Yes you are right. Yes then eventually appreciating myself more and more is what I end up doing. "Finding yourself again after losing yourself to love" was the title of a very interesting video on youtube.
I lose myself when in love.
Let's see. And then I find myself again.
I'm growing and growing through these painful processes.
It's a way of spiritual growth.
And Brene Brown has been one of the means god guided me through.
Thank you for your words of wisdom!
I will definitelly remember them. 💙

I can totally relate to this speech and the thoughts that come across.
I'm retired and volunteer including fundraising, which I find hard and uncomfortable. Yet, I learned more about people, in particular myself, than I did in earlier life. Such a shame one can't go back and start life with the knowledge gained to become a better person.

This is just about as good as it gets.
I think that every human being is born to create in their own unique way. Every human being is born to blossom, with their own colors and in their own time. But most people bind up that part of themselves, place it on a pyre, and offer up the ashes to the gods of fear and (perceived) social acceptance. And in the end, all that we could have been has been sacrificed to an illusion.

There's no job for us. We just exist with no specific job. We love and we can realize how perfect we are when we embrace pain as part of our existence, of us. If you feel that someone needs to say sorry it's because you are hurting and only your forgiveness will release that pain, because you will understand then that nobody did anything wrong, that we are that perfect baby all the time, that we are loved and we love all the time, even if that hurts. We are perfect and only if you love yourself/existence as your are, you will be able to see that.
To be enough for love means you deserve love and love is not a certain amount, love is all. Success is who you are.

I discovered you late in my life...at 68 yr old woman. However I feel truly blessed by listening to everything I can find on your talk's. Learning to love and accept myself has been a journey of discovery. Have been a working carer for 17 yrs. Changing lanes next July to get cert IV in community services after believing for too long that I didn't have the courage to or the smarts and getting over broken pelvis currently. I don't care I believe that I have the ability to empower other women in fragile circumstances to find their own voice. When I went into councelling for various issues.
The first question my counsellor asked me to ask myself was is this good for me.
That's when the shift started for me. The second question was is this my responsibility. I've learnt so much after four years of councelling.
