    The Dirty Knobs’ frontman Mike Campbell’s unique approach to songwriting and versatile playing style helped shape the sound of seminal artists including the likes of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, and Don Henley. You can bet with a career as illustrious and long as he’s had that he has the guitars to match.
    In this episode of “The Collection” host, Mark Agnesi heads to “Knobville” in Los Angeles to talk shop with Mike and see where all the magic happens. The two go deep into Mike’s arsenal, including several Gibson classics like the 1960s Gibson SG Jr that he picked up at a video store and used on Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream.”
    Head to www.thedirtyknobs.com/ to listen to the Dirty Knobs’ new album, External Combustion, and to find out how to catch them on tour.

    Joe Bonamassa: “I bought this guitar on October 12th, 2004 at exactly 8:19PM. It was sold to me by a single mother who had found it in the passenger seat of her father’s 1981 Silverado.”
    Mike Campbell: “Oh, what is that, a Firebird? Do I own that?”

      Definitely. He doesn't try to pretend like he kbows everything about his guitars. It's so refreshing to see a collector who seems to kbow just as much as an average guitar player and who just collects guitars because they move him in one way or another. It's just different when he picms up a guitar and the first story that he tells isn't how rare it is or what's so special about it but what his wife thought about it.

      Just, because he doesnt spit out exact specs about everything does not mean he isn't "caught up in the...detail". It just means he didn't talk about it in this interview. The whole estimating the year thing could be done on purpose when he knows exactly what year they are but doesn't want to come off as pretentious.

The point was one of surprise over his lack of knowledge. I took my 14yo son to see the Knobs in Ventura a few weeks ago. Mike's not kidding when he says they're having fun-It was an awesome show!! And yeah, that white guitar...it's a looker on stage. Definitely caused quite a stir when they all pulled out white guitars! Bonus: Stan Lynch was on drums and for the last encore, he and Mike stood side by side and sang Listen to the Stories We Could Tell. Unforgettable night❤

At the end of the day they are just people who love the same thing we all do. Music. I've recorded with lots of great people. Some famous, some not famous but definitely should be because they are just as great. In the meantime I'm doing the same going to pawn shops and garage sales hoping to find that one 59 Les Paul that's still out there 😜😎👍💯

    • @kevinjohnbetts
      @kevinjohnbetts 2 роки тому +1

      Good comparison. Mike and Keith are both great musicians - They serve the song and tailor their tone to that rather than merely adapting. Specific to Mike, he is so good at that you can hear a great song, love the guitar parts, and only find out years later that it was all him. Which may be why he gets overlooked.

    Wow, Mike is my number one influence. I was ten when Damn the Torpedoes came out. Being a Punk Rock bass player, I had to get a guitar to pursue that rabbit hole which Mike had opened. I bought a used Marauder for 100$. As I grew musically and the vogue axes were Kramer, BC Riches, and Ibez’s. God gifted me with a 71 lp custom I picked up in the Recycler for 240$. 1982 I believe. It’s the gem of my collection as I own at least one of each of the greats. Mike continues to inspire and his love of guitars is infectious and inspiring still, 45 years later. Thank you Mike and Gibson, you have enriched my life beyond explanation.

    The Rickenbacker 625-12 is an interesting specimen. As Mike points out, it was the third RIC 12 to come off the production line.
    The first one was a traditionally strung Ric 330/12 that was given to Suzie Arden.
    The second one was the RIC strung Ric 330/12 that was originally destined for John Lennon but was given to George Harrison.
    The third one was the traditionally strung Ric 625/12 that you see in this video at 1:04:35. You can clearly see that it is strung in the traditional manner. It is probably the only RIC 6xx series 12 string that was strung in the traditional manner from the factory.
    ... And Mike purchased it for $120 USD! LOL.
