Bob has made me slightly irritated in past but this video is just 100% irritating. The product page you can find for this thing does not exactly explain it but the game this thing is for is said BEFORE you get to the Muse Dash portion of the manual. Just two google searches from text "djmax" or "respect" after seeing the manual should have started opening up the answers this content creator is more than happy replacing with nice looking production value than actual cursory research for questions he imposes himself. And to think I have a friend who doesn't have one of these for his PC/PS4 because of restock issues for the thing so people like last person who should ever get this can own one and make most unneeded youtube video out of.
I mean, a pretty good mechanical keyboard can run $80. There are ones that are $150-200 but it's obscene that this keyboard with 28 switches is double the price of one with ~110 switches.
@@sboinkthelegday3892 It's obscene? Really? It's disgusting by moral standards? Yeah whatever. Programming the switches is trivial if you're producing many boards, you literally just slap the same logic onto them. They could do it imanually each time if they're complete idiots. However physical materials have a cost. If you or me try to buy a full 104 (American) keyboard worth of Cherry MX switches, that will cost us $104. And if we want to buy 28? $28. They're $1 each. Do you see how the number of switches makes an _obscene_ difference in cost?
"Browns give a big fat click" Oh boy. Browns have a bump in them, not a click bar. They're supposed to feel "tactile" without being loud. This is actually a pretty good beginner's controller for rhythm gamers! You noted that on the Gamo2 website that there are lots of game specific controllers, however I don't think you really noticed the prices. The K-28 is by far one of the cheaper rhythm game controllers on the market, and it allows for use between multiple games. Yeah, rhythm gamers usually have that one game we absolutely love, but who doesn't want to take a break from Bemani style games every now and then to play Groove Coaster or something else for a week? More than likely, the game specific controller wouldn't work well with another game. A Sound Voltex controller works well with 4b and 6b games, but if you wanted to play 8b, Pop'n Music, Beatmania, Groove Coaster, Project Diva, etc. you're out of luck. I think that if you are interested in rhythm gaming, but don't feel comfortable in dropping your money into an expensive game specific controller, or an expensive multi-game controller, like the EZMAX controller I personally use, then this is a nice middle ground.
as a Rhythm Gamer: a lot of us actually like to play a diverse set of games! and a lot of us really prefer the versatility and feel of a keyboard to having to buy a ton of expensive arcade controllers for every game we like, so this controller is really nice for that while being a little better put together for rhythm games than a normal keyboard. Having as many keys as it does is just so that there are lots of options for setting it up in a comfortable way
*Nintendo releases Super Mario Party online multiplayer update* A few days later: "What do you want me to do, make a Mario Party video? Nothing's going on right now."
That's the joke, m'dude. Nothing's going on except for a Mario Party update. And what's there to say in a video? It's the same game, but now you can play it online. To make a video on that, it would be either obscenely short or obscenely padded. Neither is good.
You are entirely correct. I'm one of those Fighting Game people and this controller was perfect for me. Having grown up playing emulator games on computer, I got so used to using directional buttons using my right hand (i.e. arrow keys) instead of my left which is the norm. Most Hitbox and Mixbox configurations have it set so the direction keys are done by the left hand and in order for me to compete in locals, I have to use a keyboard + converter + my own configuration so that I can use the arrow keys. This controller bypasses all that since I can just use its custom layout then it's plug and play for any ps4/switch and it's perfect.
Just thought I’d write this for anyone curious. Dampeners wouldn’t ruin tactile switches as tactile switches are meant to give you a bump when the switch actuates. Dampeners would soften out the bottom out feeling though it’s kinda mixed due to making it feel more like a membrane on bottom out
you're right to say that rhythm gamers do want very specific controllers for the games they play but most of us play a whole bunch of games me personally I play 8 different games consistently, with the prices of arcade style controllers for rhythm games being around $300-$800 usually depending on the game buying 8 controllers is a hard sell and they take up a lot of room so having one controller that is super versatile even though it isn't perfect is a much better option for a lot of people.
you should know what you're missing it's plastered all over the webpage for this device. it's for rhythm gamers who want a plug and play option for taiko, miku, and djmax and can be used on switch for the same games + groove coaster and tetris. easy to understand.
Having a keyboard is super useful for Muse Dash because higher difficulties require you to really drum the buttons a lot. Sure, there's only two inputs required but you'll want multiple buttons for each when they start throwing absurd lines of notes at you.
This thing is absolute garbage for any high level rhythm gameplay. Check out Etienne and tokaku talk about it. They go into much more detail about how bad it is. Etienne said it's one of the worst 4 key controllers he's ever used.
But its got horrible input delay as Etienne and tokaku found out about. For someone like me that plays Musynx i would much rather want an adapter to use my blue switch keyboard on the Switch as a controller.
As a rhythm game player, trust me, there is serious benefit to a keyboard type controller for Muse Dash when you get to higher level play. I've never used one for project diva but I think that it could have benefit there as well
@@FlequilloSenpai I can see the keyboard being better. Having 2 sperate buttons available for spamming, not having to move your hands as much, you can just hold a button to slide rather than do an actual sliding motion etc. Also arcade controllers are fucking massive
@@orikkun Maybe, but from i have seen and from the controller and playing tap mode for a couple of hours i think the layout of the arcade controller is just more natural, plus spamming notes wouldn't be that hard
It's mainly for rhythm games. Even on PC, it's sometimes nice to have a dedicated controller/keyboard. Various reasons include the fact that the keys on this one are laid out slightly different which works better for various games, or the fact that I beat really hard on my keyboard during rhythm games and I want to spare my man keyboard
I was thinking this could be a good replacement for DJ Max on pc actually. everytime I play on my Logi G915, I scared I break the switches when I tap too hard HAHAHAH
The reds and browns will sound similar just so people know. Blue is the ones with click. Red and brown make noise from the key bottoming out and the up stroke. Blue makes noise at bottom out and upstroke as well with the addition of a click bar/jacket that makes a high pitched click. Browns just have a tactile bump that you can feel in the keystroke to avoid accidental keypress and no click bar to be more silent than blues. Reds are just up and down with no tactile bump or click bar ( easy to press by mistake).
I have one, I enjoy it more for fighting games and mostly Tetris, the option to even customize my own layout is what drew me to it and it's design looks pleasing
You’d be surprised how intense inputs for Rhythm games can get, especially on Muse Dash. Rhythm games players have very different taste on what they like to play on
You finally sold me on a Keyboard controller, Bob. Had never considered the application for rhythm games but now I want this: Basically the appeal here, especially with games like Taiko & Muse Dash that utilize only a couple buttons, is that having multiple keys for the input is HUGE for faster sections & higher difficulties, allowing multiple presses much faster than mashing a single button. I want it, but wonder if I could rig a cheaper solution to do the same thing.
Bob! Get keycaps to replace the ones it came with. the directionals wont change and if you are only on switch the buttons should stay the same You can get your own designed keycaps
Two agreed-upon features that a fighting game controller MUST have is that the "up" input takes priority over the "down" one, instead the "left" and "right" cancel against each other. This is to prevent left+right blocking and down-charging while walking, among other things. If this is not possible on this device, then a fighting game enthusiast could use it at home, but he or she would have an unfair advantage and wouldn't be able to bring it to a tournament.
IBM Keyboard users: Ah, you think mechanical keyboards are your ally? You merely adopted the switches. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see a DPAD until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but mushy!
It's a controller geared towards rhythm game players but ironically it sucks for high level rhythm game players, as the refresh rate of the keyboard is kinda abysmal (or at least was, dunno if that's been fixed yet)
there is a good reason why people would prefer this on PC rhythm game over standard keyboard: the layout for example, if you play DJMAX Respect where you need 8 buttons laid out in a fashion you won't mispress, standard keyboard isn't really a good option (worse if you have TKL or compact one like 75% or 60%), Gamo2 mitigates the issue by having only the necessary buttons on the keyboard, reducing the issue in pressing the wrong buttons but that will mostly depends from person to person as I know some can do just fine with standard full-layout keyboard, I personally prefer Gamo2 to prevent me from pressing wrong buttons and the reason why it's also advertised for Osu is the Osu!Mania mode where it plays pretty much like O2jam / DJMAX, it makes no sense to use the board in standard EBA / Ouendan as it doesn't need anything more than two keys.
Odd expensive switch accessories are kind of my shit. Also important PSA that I discovered yesterday. Ground loop noise isolators fix the static that comes through the switch headphone jack when docked. Maybe worth a video? It saved me from buying yet another external dac, which is really hard for the switch since very few are compatible.
as an osu mania player, i could see myself enjoying this. I like how the keys are spread out, it has enough buttons for pretty much every mode i’d play. it’s super compact, so would fit perfectly on my desk.
I gotta say I have this keyboard (and coincidentally reviewed this a while ago) and I love this thing. It's so cute and stylish. Yeah this keyboard doesn't have hot-swappable switches because switches are soldered onto the PCB. If you wanted to swap switches you could disassemble it and desolder the switches. Not recommended and would probably void your warranty. And yeah you can use a keyboard instead of a K28 on PC but I feel the ortholinear layout is better suited to rhythm games than... well your standard layout keyboards. And yeah, you could get a keyboard but most keyboards don't emulate Nintendo Switch or PS3/PS4 controls. It sounds like I'm just an apologist for this thing but I really do enjoy using it. And this is someone who's used a variety of keyboards, controllers, and alternative control methods as well.
This controller was mainly made for DJMAX games and as a fan I'm tempted to buy it. I don't really play on my ps4 anymore and moved to my gaming laptop. I don't type and mainly play games using a dualshock4 so I never needed an external keyboard. A small portable mini-keyboard with mirrored sides like this just to play rhythm games seems like a perfect fit for me. I do have the drum controller for Taiko but on Hard and Oni difficulty songs I'm kinda annoyed that you barely have any time to lift the sticks to hit again, while on a keyboard like this your fingers are already on the 4 buttons you need to press, so it feels more comfortable and I score much better. Of course i could just buy an external gaming keyboard but even the smallest one is still too big for my table. Having an option is always good.
I dunno if Taiko is really the game for this controller. Games like DJMax and Project Diva. On the switch though I dunno why you would need that. Even so I don't even want clicky buttons for music games, I play DJ max and Project diva on keyboard, but I use linear optical switches that are super light to trigger so I don't have to push down a lot. At least for me thats what I like.
The “market” is just like that unfortunately, even in the keyboard space. Surprisingly, making a macro pad sized device like this is actually similar in cost to a full keyboard. Sure, you’re using less plastic pieces, but that was never really where the cost came from in the first place. It’s mostly the cost to just get all these parts assembled, and these macro pads still require all the parts a traditional keyboard would. Case, PCB, switches, keycaps, everything adds up.
Didn't expect Wulff Den to review this keyboard in particular. I've seen some other K28 reviews before and apparently there's some high inconsistency with the polling rates in certain builds, some being 125hz and some being 66hz (my model in particular comes at a 100hz), I'm not knowledged in keyboard stuff like this so apologies if I'm wrong
5:55 tactile means you feel a tactile bumb Clicky means you're gonna get a click out of it blue switches tend to give a high pitched click For the big fat click you're gonna want to look for kailh box jade or navy switches
Shocked that my last comment was recommending this and now where here 😂 This definitely is for those who play a mix of ps4/switch and those looking to play alot more than just one game. It's a bit of work to set up for sure but does work really well once it's set up. I prefer mostly Project Diva and Tetris with this and I love playing with it. I'm a fighting game player mostly though and whilst it does work and is ok to play on a fightstick or hitbox style is so much better for fighting games. A bit of software for this keyboard is seriously needed, if it had it I honestly think it would change the user experience massively!
Rhythm games like djmax, Acraea, and other 4k-7k style games take lots of buttons. if you're playing stuff like musedash those are what the bigger buttons are intended for. (Also linears are very good for gaming cause they actuate better but clicky make my brain happy)
For me, this controller is a great compact Hitbox style controller that I can also use for PC shortcuts. While there are other Hitboxes on the market (I even made my own out of solid walnut), and other compact solutions like the Snackbox Micro, this offers a degree of customization, portability, and sturdiness that can't be found in other Hitboxes. I wanted something small that I could bring to tournaments while also having SOCD cleaning and native support to be tournament legal, but I can also customize the keys and dampen the sound. I live in a loft with 30ft ceilings and even silent Sanaa buttons are LOUD and echo. These plus dampeners let me play quietly while still meeting my other requirements. It also just looks dope and I'll probably snag an artisan cap or two for fun. For me it's like if you're a keeb weeb AND a fighting game player who doesn't always play on stick, this is a meat product. Would I recommend it? Hell no lol but it's cool none the less
I have a Gamo 2 with Reds and have been using it for a few years it's hands down the best keyboard controller for switch imho because the large spaced icons it helps with Rhythm games Taiko, Voez, Deemo and Project Diva the best for it Muse Dash has some rhythm syncing issue with it's controls the inputs in some of the songs don't really follow the rhythm of the song on switch. It played better on steam. You can use it with many other games other than what is supported and it's amazing for Tetris 99. You have such a huge advantage using it to play Tetris. I use it a lot with Megaman Anniversary and Street Fighter 30th as well. You can move the smaller space bars to other locations too which makes it SO much better to have the larger buttons for things like combos etc.
The McDonald's scenario happens in a lot of other companies. Something breaks or general maintenance and you generally have to wait forever for the "company man" to come in. Supposed to be done in a certain time frame but they generally take all shift long. All at the Franchisee expense
I think its not marketed towards fighting games cause sticks are the superior product for the same price or less. Quarter, half, and full circle inputs may end up getting dropped due to how close all of the keys are. Might accidentally graze unintentional inputs on the way. As always, great video!
I am more than happy with the regular Switch joycons, have zero need or interest in something like this, but this was still a very interesting video! Nice job, Bob! :D
"Why are they all so expensive?" Because niche specialty items cost a lot of time and money to develop and make and because there isn't mass market appeal they can't justify mass producing them in any cheap manner, thus the niche consumer pays a premium for the niche hardware.

It saved me from buying yet another external dac, which is really hard for the switch since very few are compatible.
Pellet gun owners: ...Why does this controller exist?
I love that he is talking about rythm games, muse dash is absolutely fantastic
as an osu mania player, i could see myself enjoying this. I like how the keys are spread out, it has enough buttons for pretty much every mode i’d play. it’s super compact, so would fit perfectly on my desk.
That Switch sure does look slick.
Even useless controllers are an aesthetic on Wulff Den
"Nothing's going on right now" 😂😂😂sooo true
In the subtitles when talking about the d-pad @ 13:50 it had bleep when you didn't censor the word. You straight up said it lol.
So, how much longer till Bob just starts gaming on a PC with keyboard and mouse?
Welcome to the beginning of the video hope you have a good day
Thank you. You too
Bring on all the quirky controller accessories!
the pause for doggo to scratch up the floor made my day😂
Nobody does sponsored ads better than WULFF DEN lmao
I'd watch a compilation of those by themselves XD
is this what i’ve been looking for my entire life??
Gotta agree that the lack of proper visuals for keys is highly confusing. I wish they gave you stickers with it.
Thanks for reviewing this :)
And this is someone who's used a variety of keyboards, controllers, and alternative control methods as well.
i’m surprised there aren’t more midi programs on the eShop with controllers like this on the market
Yeah I’m pretty annoyed with the lack of midi functionality. Korg gadget is like the only thing serious music wise and I would have expected more...
Lol @ 6:26 “He’s gonna break a keyboard in real time”
The lights in the middle made me immediately think of the jewels in a 16 bit puzzler like Columns II. I want to eat them.
Yes, I wanted you to make a Mario party video, something is going on right now about it
That aged well
This controller was mainly made for DJMAX games and as a fan I'm tempted to buy it.
The only use I could possibly see for this controller that some other controller won't do better is obscure rhythm games
Video editing is getting AMAZING 👏🙌🙌🙌
Didn't think i'd see you review ANYTHING from gamo2. This is a surprise. They are doing the rhythm game world a huge favor with their controllers.
Oh i just finished the video and thought the title was a rhetorical question... but you were serious. lol
Bob: what do you want me to do? ...nothings going on right now
MH Rise console/controller/game: Am I nothing to you?
Missed opportunity - you should have timed the drop with plugging the controller
Love how excited he was about getting Luke 🤣👍
Didn't expect Wulff Den to review this keyboard in particular.
I've seen some other K28 reviews before and apparently there's some high inconsistency with the polling rates in certain builds, some being 125hz and some being 66hz (my model in particular comes at a 100hz), I'm not knowledged in keyboard stuff like this so apologies if I'm wrong
5:55 tactile means you feel a tactile bumb
Clicky means you're gonna get a click out of it blue switches tend to give a high pitched click
For the big fat click you're gonna want to look for kailh box jade or navy switches
Shocked that my last comment was recommending this and now where here 😂
This definitely is for those who play a mix of ps4/switch and those looking to play alot more than just one game.
You're ruining your dog's shot, Bob.
Rhythm games like djmax, Acraea, and other 4k-7k style games take lots of buttons. if you're playing stuff like musedash those are what the bigger buttons are intended for.
(Also linears are very good for gaming cause they actuate better but clicky make my brain happy)
This controller is best used for games like DJMax Respect and Musynx. Try those with this controller and then you'll understand why this exists.
Browns are basically quieter blues. They're tactile, but not clicky.
The McDonald's scenario happens in a lot of other companies.
Something breaks or general maintenance and you generally have to wait forever for the "company man" to come in.
Supposed to be done in a certain time frame but they generally take all shift long. All at the Franchisee expense
Thought the grill was a speaker at first before it lit up.
I think its not marketed towards fighting games cause sticks are the superior product for the same price or less. Quarter, half, and full circle inputs may end up getting dropped due to how close all of the keys are. Might accidentally graze unintentional inputs on the way.
As always, great video!
Man, this video explained about 15 things I was looking for; I just didn't have the names to look up for myself.
bob slowly but surely becoming a keyboard nerd. noice
Haven’t even watched the video, but the orange switch is so clean!
Going to be honest. Your video effects are some of the best compared to others who do videogame "review" content. Two thumbs up
who is Rue? i only know production dog
lol great video as always bob!
I am more than happy with the regular Switch joycons, have zero need or interest in something like this, but this was still a very interesting video! Nice job, Bob! :D
"And they do stuff... like this."
I think its a bad thing when I saw that footage and didn't get why he was making it out to be some crazy shit
Bob is getting closer to joining the custom keyboard hobby and I am here for it lol
"Why are they all so expensive?"
Because niche specialty items cost a lot of time and money to develop and make and because there isn't mass market appeal they can't justify mass producing them in any cheap manner, thus the niche consumer pays a premium for the niche hardware.
