    Man, you really went about this the hard way. Crown pushbuttons, specifically the SDB-202 series, don't require any soldering and it's super easy (despite what the description says) to just pull out the switches and swap them with whatever else you have. No mods required and they are usually in stock at the arcade shops. And yeah, I feel you on that whole, "It's nice to know you messed up and not the game," thing. Xbox controllers are particularly bad about missing inputs on the face buttons and I really wish we could just move to mechanical face buttons now.

    I have long obsessed over stuff like this. I’m in my late 30’s, so I grew up on 2D games from the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, and have pretty much hated the D-Pads of all modern controllers from the PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast era onwards. What makes my case unique though is that I was born with a moderate classified case of Cerebral Palsy. In short, I’m very dominantly left handed. My right hand is barely more than a fist. I can get a controller’s grip into my right hand, but I don’t have the motor control to move my right hand’s fingers or thumb at all. When I button mash, I’m flicking my LEFT arm’s wrist so the entire controller is being flicked up into my right hand’s thumb. I do not have the dexterity to use an arcade deck’s buttons on a flat surface. I can’t open my hand like that without extreme strain. I have tried everything under the sun looking for a good controller solution. Everything from modding an older SNES or NES D-Pad onto Xbox and PS4 controllers to using keyboard switches, but I’ve never had much success with it. What I need is just for a 1st party controller vendor to just make a decent old style D-Pad like we had in the SNES days.
    For those of you who want more info on how I play games on modern Xbox/PS5/8bitdo controller, I almost universally have my sticks and triggers swapped so I aim with the left stick, walk with the right, leaving the D-Pad as my 4 face buttons for jumping or attacking, and the left trigger for my main trigger button. Oh, and I play inverted, pulling back to look up. It’s become a running joke with my circle of friends that no one can play anything using my controller. But honestly, my control scheme is closer to what was standard in the 80’s and 90’s than what is considered default on most Xbox games today, so I don’t think it’s “that” weird.
    It’s been a godsend of this generation of consoles that button remapping has become standard on the OS level for all systems. That’s helped a lot. But I still want a modern controller with a classic D-Pad that isn’t crappy or mushy.

      You might like 8bitdo's M30 controller. Its based on the 6 button genesis/saturn controllers. Ive used those controllers on my emulation set up so I can say these M30s are just as good if not a little better than the Saturn pads. The Saturn pad was my main 2D controller for a while, until I switched over to the M30. I have tried 8bitdo's SNES style pads and the Dpad is extremely unreliable. It hits diagonals with regular movement. What that means is crouching or unwanted movement. A good test was tetris. The blocks move to the left or right when they shouldnt. The M30 is awesome though and is the best Dpad out there that Ive found. I use it for most of the old games I complete on the channel. I play those on an emulation focused PC.
      The other benefit is built in rapid fire for all buttons. I like the controller so much that I use it for DLC and indie games on modern consoles with an adapter. It works out of the box on Switch and PC though. You can use it for just about anything with USB adapters as well. Durability is pretty good too. My first one lasted about 2 years and several hundred games beaten before becoming mushy and unclearly defined in the dpad. Much better than most modern controllers and only 30 bucks.
      SNK has an awesome pad based off of thier Neo Geo CD console. Its for the PS2. It has an amazing Dpad for fighting games that uses microswitches. Its like a hybrid of a very short thumbstick and arcade microswitches. Problem is, after about a month the dpad becomes very undefined and loses that sharp clickiness. It got way too expensive to replace though. I still got better performance from the M30 overall. The SNK pad was incredible for pulling off moves in 2D fighters with sliding motions though.

      @Kiibo Blues aren't tactile switches, they're classed as clicky switches. MX browns, clears and greys are probably the most popular tactiles by volume sold. Yeah, I really like the Crown 202's, which are hotswap, but they can be hard to get a hold of, especially if you're picky about colors (which I am). I haven't swapped the switches from the Speed Silvers it came with (IMO using a clicky or tactile switch in them would be super weird for me), but I might try some others now that I'm getting more into keyboards again. On my stick, any button is pretty loud (to the point where I'm considering adding some dampening foam to get that "thoccy" sound).

    • @WTFA54
      @WTFA54 2 роки тому +3

      If you do try different switches, be mindful of their actuation point! I also have the crown 202s and there's an issue with the width of the button stem contacting the switch housing that makes it so the switch needs to actuate at a slightly higher point to work. Most other speed switches work and iirc some Kailh pro series switches also work. But I've messed with some more boutique switches for funsies and some of them actuate too low to consistently register keypresses. The tolerance is in the 1/10th of a mm so ymmv but yeah speed switches have been safe

Then I was on a trip, forgot my Hori, and I was forced to get used to the joycon. After I got used to it I realized it is WAY better. 4 distinct clicky buttons allows me to give precise inputs and I never accidentally get the direction wrong anymore.

    Snack box looks so sexy but at 200 bucks. Sheesh. Definitely something with hot swap-able switches. I’m not a fighting stick connaisseur, but I fell like you’d want something medium clicky for the buttons, and something like you installed for the dpad with less travel time, making it more responsive. I think the 8bit is a great deal to get into this.

    I would suggest a better soldering tip preferably a chisel tip with the pin tip you don't get very good heat transfer due to the limited mass of the tip

    You can replace the springs in the switches to help with the bounce back. If you are using linear switches I recommend lubing the spring and the inside of the switch where friction occurs for the smoothest of smooth switch

    As a fightstick user, i can confirm that although sanwa buttons are the industry standard, they are only SLIGHTLY better than the imitations that 8bitdo uses for their sticks (maybe the sanwas might last longer or something but i doubt it will be that different)

    You can solder in 7305 mill-max sockets into those so they are hot swappable 👍
    You'll need 2 per button but it should solve your problem. You just have to make sure you clean all the solder off of the PCB with a decent solder suck and make sure you solder the sockets in flush so you don't have tolerance issues like you did with the globs of solder

    in the keyboard world hotswap boards are for people who are still residing on what they want out of a switch. once you know what you want sodering your switch to the board is better from general consences. i can understand your point of view and think you are right for this use case a hot swap would be better.

    I might have tried a fine grit (2,000) sand paper to take off any burs from the sides of the caps and inside to remove that sticking feeling rather than lube. Or maybe both could be beneficial.

    I'm feeling called out here. 😃
    Having modded my own 8BitDo AS, they don't seem amenable to screw in buttons, which really limits your options. It is good to know that the box switches work with the PAS solution though; that's practically the only one I've heard of that works with that.

    Not a keyboard guy, but a year ago I built a stickless fightstick from scratch and I decided to try using the crown 202s that use silver switches. It makes me tempted to build a keyboard and experiment with more switches.... 🤔

    This custom keyboard arcade stick thing is one of those things ill have to do when I get a job again and have more expendable income. Im already coming up with an idea for making the stick hotswappable, because I wouldnt want to keep it a keyboard Dpad, sometimes id want the usual arcade stick. For now though I guess I can just use my keyboard...

    You can convert components to be hit swappable. Mill-Max Receptacles is one example used on PCBs for keyboards so... Maybe look into that if you want hot swappable?

  • @tylermcdonald1986
    @tylermcdonald1986 2 роки тому

    You should look into millmax sockets. They are available on most keyboard part websites and allows you to turn any switch socket into a hotswap socket
