Hi from New Zealand. Over here we make ours round then fold them over and before baking, sprinkle over some sugar. Once baked and cold, open the edge that you pressed together and pipe in lashings of whipped cream around the inside edge. Mmmmm... oh darn, I just put on 3 kg thinking about them lol. xx
I was one of 8 children and, every Sunday, my Mum baked 2 or 3 plate fruit pies for tea. She used a simple short crust pastry and if, as usual, she had a little left over she'd make a turnover. The normal filling was simply jam, but we kids loved it.
Aww my mum would do that too with left over pastry or she would put cinnamon and brown sugar on it then roll them up. We used to call them pin wheels and they were so yummy.
When my sisters and I were little, our Mum would give us enough leftover pastry so we could each make our own turnover with whatever filling we wanted, and most of the time it was just jam. We were so proud of those turnovers when they came out of the oven. I haven't thought about that in years...thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory. ❤️
Hey there, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your channel. I have a lot of Scottish heritage and it's great to see you make traditional or common cuisine from the homeland. It's an enormous help to us diaspora xx
Lovely to see measurement in inches! It feels like the empire abandoned such a more humanistic expression of measure. Just made apple cobbler, an even simpler way to use this fall/autumn bounty. Simple is always my cup of tea!
Oooh these look so yummy. Might try them with some added sutanas. Love your recipes, they are hearty and tasty and go down very well in our house. Thanks Cheryl.
This was a welcome reminder that (a) I can make them myself and (b) the filling isn't limited to fruits. Now, if I can just remember to pick up the puff pastry... LOL!
These look delicious!! I was imagining the wonderful smells through the whole video. 😋 All the yummy Ontario fall apples are in the stores now...I love cooking apple desserts at this time of year. It's chilly outside, but inside, our home is warm and cozy, and filled with the heavenly spicy smells of apple pies/crisps/turnovers/crumbles/tarts/chutneys cooking!! 😋
Cheryl just let me tell ya how much I love all your videos. I'm from Edinburgh and my mum is from Glasgow and it's so nice to cook some amazing authentic scottish food.🤗 Thanks so so much 😊
We call them "appelflappen" (apple-flaps, haha) in the Netherlands and you can get them anywhere but I picked up some really useful tips to make the homemade ones turn out better. Thanks! Oh and we don't use nutmeg and we put sugar on top before baking, it creates a crispy crust.
I have a recipe for turnovers, but yours looks much better and easier. And the trick of popping them into the fridge is a brilliant idea that I never knew. I have some lovely northern spy apples that are amazing cooking apples. I am going to make some of these today. Thanks again for another wonderful recipe.
you would love the puff pastry sheets we have here,6"square, or 15cm..I add raisings, but no nutmeg, might try that and sugar on top that will melt in oven. if i make them into treats, Icut the square on the diagonal and gettiny ones, so cute though
Cheryl, I have been given some apples from my cousins apple tree and have been planning on making turn overs. So glad you posted your recipe today. Simple easy instructions to follow. Looking forward to making these tomorrow. Thank you. 💜
Normally I don't give much for apple turnovers as well. But the smell of them baking in the oven is like aroma therapy to me. With my children they don't get a chance to cool down. Instead of putting normal flour into the apple mixture I sprinkle a fine layer of almond flour over the pastry to absorb the moisture. It tastes divine, almost like a hint of marzipan.
Just a helpful cheat... after peeling the apples, just cut them in half top to bottom, then use a mellon baller to cut out the center core... you might have a bit of peel at the top and bottom, you can use the mellon baller to slice it off, or just leave it, it will cook down.
thanks Cheryl, these look yummy thanks for sharing my family love these too. you made these look so easy to do. as one of the other lady said their goes extra couple of pounds on my hips. but who cares, thanks once again love your videos looking forward for the next one. 👍😋😺💖
Cheryl i love this recipe you explain it very well❤ i am going to try it. I have made this With canned apples which i like but granny smith apples Look delicious😊
I make these ones quite regularly for my family. Fortunately we can buy ready cut puff pastry squares in a package of 10. So I don't have to cut them myself. Otherwise I would definitely use a measuring tape.😅 I've never used the recipe you are using, so I'm going to try your recipe the next time I'll make them. Saying hi from the Netherlands. 🤗
Hello from Glasgow! I love your videos thank you, your videos are so homely! Your accent is similar to my grans who was a great cook and as she's no longer here I could use her know how when cooking, but your videos are exactly what I needed, nice and cheery and the views of the scenery at the end are just lovely so thank you :) I have tried your oat cakes recipe so far and wish to do the beef stew tomorrow night! If you want suggestions for recipes, pumpkin pie and soup? Not very Scottish but just a thought 😋 thank you again, I wish you very well!
And once again Cheryl, the blatantly obvious, that I've 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 thought of. Of course you flour the fork, why wouldn't you? 😂👍👌 Nobody ever told me 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑜𝑛𝑒. Thank you. 👍✔ Cheers for now, Dougie. P.S. How about a separate wee video, dedicated to these simple, priceless, little nuggets? I bet you've got dozens of them; second nature to you but pure genius if you haven't thought of them yourself.😁
Can you pass some through the screen to me please, I was just thinking about how to make these after a disappointing trip to my local bakery, they didnt have any apart from the ones that have cream stuffed in them, I dont know how you can just bake six at a time, me its like 60 a time and the diet starts the day after there finished LOL.
Just a suggestion if you're not fond of cooked apples; take them a wee stage further, into apple 𝑝𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑒. Odd as it seems, I'm not a big fan of cooked apples but love apple puree. I think it's the texture of cooked slices and some shop-bought stuff can have uncooked bits it them. Seriously though, give it a try Deb, you might be surprised. 😁 Apart from anything else, there are 𝑠𝑜 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦 things you can add to apple puree; Cheryl used cinnamon and nutmeg; I've seen raisins/sultanas mentioned; various kinds of booze can be sneaked in there, especially nearer Christmas; other fruit/berries (definitely raspberries) - the possibilities are endless. Another thought if cooked apples are a no-no, use pears or peaches instead.😁 I hope Cheryl doesn't mind me butchering her recipes. 😂
@@jonap5740 Funny thing, jam can nearly always replace apples, tarts, pies and crumbles being three obvious examples. I wonder how many brilliant puds were invented by "lazy" men? 😂 🥧

Lovely! I’d probably add a few sultanas for an extra burst of sweetness.
What a coincidence. Had an uncle who loved these. He would have been 105 today and today would be his birthday. He had several apple trees...big ones.

Handy for for dessert, with custard. Apple pie/crumble is not the same on a small scale. 😁
